In this paper, a novel Fenton reaction system which was called MHACF-MIL-100(Fe) was constructed. In this system, based on active hydrogen-accelerated FeIII reduction, the hydroxyl radical was continuously produced with a trace amount of total iron. The MIL-100(Fe) modified with the nano-Pd0 particle could be used to activate the H2. Under normal temperature and pressure, the target organic pollutants, such as sulfamethazine and 4-chloro phenol, could be degraded fast. In the condition of initial aqueous solution pH 3, 2 g L–1 dosage of MIL-100(Fe) catalyst loaded with nano-Pd0, Pd/MIL-100(Fe), 20 mM 30 wt% hydrogen peroxide, 25 μM ferrous chloride and 60 mL H2 min–1, 97.8% of sulfamethazine and 100% 4-chloro phenol could be degraded within only 5 min, respectively. Although the surface of the catalyst exhibited more obvious defects and roughness after 5 consecutive destructive experiment cycles, its basic structure could be maintained. The removal efficiency could be maintained at least more than 79% (sulfamethazine) and 94% (4-chloro phenol). That may be mainly attributed to the degradation of hydroxyl radical.

Catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDC) is considered as one of the most promising strategies for the treatment of chlorinated environmental pollutants. Here we proposed a strategy for rapid complete dechlorination by exploiting a B–N co-doped hierarchically porous carbon material (BNC) to immobilize Pd NPs, which makes use of not only the micro/meso porous structure to accelerate the mass transport and to provide enormous active sites, but also the synergistic effect for codoping of B–N to enhance the interaction between Pd NPs and support and thus to stabilize and disperse the small size of the Pd particle. Ascribed to these combined advantages, Pd/BNC exhibited more distinctive catalytic dehalogenation activity (k = −0.14 min−1) and better stability (about 90.0% activity retention after 5 cycles) than Pd/C (k = −0.0070 min−1). Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the incorporation of N and B atoms in the carbon skeleton will reduce the adsorption energy of Cl− and thus Pd/BNC exhibits more remarkable stability than Pd/C during long-term HDC reactions. As a result, ultrafine Pd particles and high Pd2+/(Pd2+ + Pd0) ratios were found in Pd/BNC.

Selective C-C bond cleavage in lignin is a pivotal step toward its efficient utilization, enabling the production of diverse and valuable chemicals from this abundant and renewable resource. Among the catalysts reported for oxidative cleavage of C-C bond in lignin β-O-4 ketones, CeO₂-supported Pd catalysts have demonstrated outstanding activity. However, the exact nature of the active Pd sites responsible for C-C bond cleavage remains poorly understood, limiting mechanistic insights into this transformation. In this study, CeO₂ supports with four distinct morphologies including rods (R), spheres (S), cubes (C), and polyhedrons (P) were synthesized to investigate their influence on the catalytic activity of Pd/CeO₂ catalysts in the oxidative cleavage of β-O-4 ketones. The catalytic performance was found to depend strongly on the morphology of CeO₂, with Pd/CeO₂-P exhibiting the highest activity for C-C bond cleavage. This catalyst possessed the lowest Pd⁴⁺ content and the highest Pd⁰/Pd²⁺ ratio among the series. By systematically tuning this ratio, a volcano-type relationship between Pd⁰/Pd²⁺ ratio and catalytic activity was established, indicating a dual-site mechanism in which Pd⁰ facilitates the formation of reactive oxygen species, while Pd²⁺ serves as the active center for C-C bond cleavage.

CZID-Pd is a turn-on fluorescent probe for selectively detecting zero-valent palladium species. • The probe successfully quantified Pd 0 in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. • Agarose gel enabled portable visual Pd 0 detection through rapid smartphone-assisted RGB analysis. Zero-valent palladium (Pd 0 ), a catalytically important species widely involved in industrial, energy, and pharmaceutical processes, has attracted increasing attention owing to its potential environmental release and associated health risks. However, the high reactivity and transient nature of Pd 0 make its selective recognition and reliable detection particularly challenging. In this work, a novel turn-on fluorescent probe, CZID-Pd, was designed and synthesized based on a Pd 0 -triggered Tsuji-Trost deallylation mechanism. Spectroscopic studies demonstrated that CZID-Pd enables sensitive and selective detection of Pd 0 in the presence of competing species, while maintaining good photostability and reproducibility. The probe exhibited a large Stokes shift of 127 nm and a low detection limit of 0.22 μM. For visual detection, CZID-Pd was further incorporated into an agarose hydrogel to construct a portable smartphone-assisted sensing platform, enabling semiquantitative analysis of Pd 0 through RGB image analysis. The gel sensor showed satisfactory accuracy and reproducibility in real water samples. In addition, CZID-Pd displayed low cytotoxicity and was successfully used for fluorescence imaging of exogenous Pd 0 in living cells. By integrating molecular probe design, gel encapsulation, and smartphone-assisted quantification, this work provides a practical sensing platform for Pd 0 with potential applications in environmental monitoring and bioimaging. The large-scale production of iron sludge and the safety issues of H2O2 usage are two limitations in the promotion and application of the Fenton reaction. To further solve the problems, an active hydrogen reduction strategy was proposed. Herein, the reducing property of active hydrogen was utilized to simultaneously generate H2O2 in situ and accelerate the regeneration of ferric in the reaction process. The composite metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) Pd@UiO-66(Zr) and Pd@UiO-66(Zr)-2OH, which were stable under acidic conditions, were synthesized for hydrogen activation. Under the condition of only trace amounts of ferrous and hydrogen added, both catalysts showed excellent performance in the degradation experiments of trimethoprim. The kobs of the Pd@UiO(Zr)-66-mediated system is 0.0487 min–1, which is 1.67 times that of Pd@UiO-66(Zr)-2OH. In the pollutant degradation reaction system constructed by these two materials, both of the hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen play a dominant role. The Bader charge analysis showed that the charge transfer from Pd to the MOF host was higher on Pd@UiO-66(Zr) than Pd@UiO-66(Zr)-2OH, which could be a key factor in distinguishing the catalytic activity of the catalysts. In addition, both catalysts showed excellent stability over six cycles. Nearly 100% degradation of trimethoprim could be achieved. This study provides some reference for the control of emerging pollutants by UiO-66(Zr) series materials.

Refractory wastewater treatment via Fenton reactions is hindered by iron sludge. Herein, fluorinated UiO-66(Zr)-F4 was employed as a hydrogen-storage carrier to confine Pd⁰ catalytic centers, and an [H]-mediated (H 2 -precursored) Fenton-like system was constructed for carbamazepine degradation under ambient conditions. With 25 μM Fe 2 + and 60 mL min⁻ 1 H 2 flow, 53% carbamazepine removal was achieved in 1 h via ⋅OH/ 1 O 2 oxidation, and > 59% efficiency was retained over six 3-h cycles. However, [H]-driven hydrogen spillover reduced C-F bonds, causing a 92.3% drop in specific surface area that compromised long-term stability. It was concluded that fluorination is suboptimal; modulating the carrier’s hydrophobicity via electron-donating groups (instead of fluorination) is critical for stable Zr-MOF-based catalysts in [H]-assisted advanced oxidation, offering alternative perspectives for process optimization.
