In this research, greigite (Fe 3 S 4 ) was innovatively applied for the enhancement of PDS/Fe(II) system. From XRD and SEM analyses, Fe 3 S 4 was successfully synthesized and appeared uniform sphere-like particles with a petal-like structure. Trichloroethylene (TCE), as the target, was significantly degraded from 28.5 % to 92.8 % in PDS/Fe(II)/Fe 3 S 4 system. The enhanced mechanisms, differences, and superiority of Fe 3 S 4 against the other three iron sulfides were elucidated as follows: (1) on account of the abundant reduction sites on its surface, Fe 3 S 4 could not only directly release Fe(II) and accelerate Fe(II) regeneration by sulfur substances, but also participate in the process of O 2 − • generation, and (2) the reaction mainly took place on Fe 3 S 4 surface, in which the surface-bound reactive species (RSs) were of great importance for TCE degradation. Through EPR, quantification, and scavenging tests of RSs, HO•, SO 4 − •, and O 2 − • were all the dominant RSs responsible for TCE removal. Besides, these enhanced systems had high tolerance on complex water conditions and could remediate various contaminants in actual groundwater. Three TCE degradation pathways were deduced in four iron sulfide-enhanced systems and the toxicities of intermediates were evaluated, recommending that Fe 3 S 4 -enhanced system was of the least toxicity and most favorable for application in practice.

Z-scheme structure is an effectively construction to improve the photocatalytic activity due to the excellent photo-generated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. In this paper, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO), (Au/rGO)/CdS and modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal, ultrasonic dispersion, deposition-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted methods. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activity of prepared samples were evaluated via photocatalytic conversion rate of nitrite under ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiations. Due to the enhanced separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS exhibited excellent performance under both ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiation, reaching 94.59% and 91.25% conversion rates, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of simulated solar-light irradiation time and corresponding reaction kinetics on photocatalytic conversion of nitrite were studied. Subsequently, the effects of electron and hole scavengers were investigated to further elaborate the possible mechanism. In addition, the study of used times showed that the prepared modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS nanocomposites can be effectively recycled without an apparent inactivation on photocatalytic activity. This research may provide a potential way by utilizing solar energy efficiently for converting nitrite and other contaminants released into the environment.

A system of Cu 2+ /calcite/PDS was constructed to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ). Different from the traditional Cu-mediated activation, a low concentration of Cu 2+ that met drinking water standards (≤ 1 mg/L) transformed into Cu(Ⅱ) solid in the presence of calcite, and then enhanced the degradation of SDZ via PDS activation over a pH range from 3 to 9. According to scavenger and chemical probe experiments, Cu(Ⅲ), rather than radicals (hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals) and singlet oxygen, was the predominant reactive species, which was responsible for the degradation of SDZ. Based on the results of XRD, ATR-FTIR, and CV curves et al., CuCO 3 was the main complex with high reactivity for PDS activation to form Cu(Ⅲ). Moreover, detailed degradation pathways of sulfadiazine were proposed according to the UPLC-ESI-MS/MS and their toxicity was predicted by ECOSAR. Besides, the real water matrix would not seriously affect the degradation of SDZ in the Cu 2+ /calcite/PDS system. In summary, this study reveals a new insight into the synergistic effect of Cu 2+ and calcite on the SDZ degradation, and promotes an understanding of the environmental benefits of natural calcite.

Rate-limiting mass transfer is a critical issue for using iron-based catalysts supported by zeolites to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) in the field of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this study, hierarchically porous Fe-SAPO-34-DGC was synthesized via combing in-situ encapsulation method with dry gel conversion (DGC) technology. Tetracycline (TC) was applied as a model pollutant, about 91.5% TC in Fe-SAPO-34-DGC/PDS system can be degraded within 90 min, while it can be achieved for about 150 min in Fe-SAPO-34-HT/PDS system. Meanwhile, the degradation rate constant of Fe-SAPO-34-DGC/PDS system is 0.02391 min -1 , which is approximately 1.6 times higher than that of Fe-SAPO-34-HT/PDS system. The excellent catalytic performance of Fe-SAPO-34-DGC is caused by well dispersed iron-oxide species (the size about 1.47 nm) in cha cage and nanoplate-like morphology as well as mesoporous structure, resulting in the generation of more active sites for PDS activation and faster mass transfer and easier access to active sites. Moreover, the characterized results indicate that the absence of Si(3Al) species is favorable of the formation of nanoplate-like morphology, further leading to the formation of the mesoporous structure because of stacking. Besides, iron-oxide species in Fe-SAPO-34-DGC are confined in cha cage that can effectively keep back its leaching. Furthermore, the possibility of membrane reactor established by Fe-SAPO-34-DGC for practical environmental water treatment was evaluated. Therefore, this method combing in-situ encapsulation method with dry gel conversion technology provides an alternative pathway for construction of iron-based catalysts supported by zeolites to remove organic pollutants through PDS activation.

The transformation of iodide (I − ) and hypoiodous acid (IO − ) by Fe (II)-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) was investigated. In the water of a reservoir in Shenzhen, four kinds of organic matter were detected: iodoform > diiodo-bromomethane > dibromo-iodomethane > dichloromethane. As pH increased from 3 to 10, I − conversion rate decreased from 31.0% to 11.0%. There is basically no iodic acid ( ) generated under alkaline conditions, probably due to these organic matters. When PDS concentration is low, PDS can oxidize part of I − to IO − , and the oxidation of I − into reaction and continued oxidation reaction exist at the same time, so some is generated in the system. As the proportion of Fe (II) increases, the generation rate of gradually increases. When Fe 2+ /PDS is 1:5, 2:5, and 3:5, the conversion rates of are 4.7%, 6.5%, and 8.4%, respectively. There are two main reasons for this: (i) the reaction of IO − produced in the system with humic acid (HA) inhibits the further conversion of IO − to ; (ii) both HA and I- in the system can react with PDS, resulting in a reduction in the oxidation rate of I − . Formation of I-DBPs by Fe (II)/PDS process in real water was evaluated. I-DBPs generation in various reaction conditions was examined. Existence of HA showed apparent inhibition on IO 3 − generation.

In this study, a comparison between electrochemically activated peroxomonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) using carbon anodes was conducted for the first time. PMS activation was achieved using graphite (GR) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) anodes, which significantly promoted the degradation of organic pollutants sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The radical probing and scavenging experiments demonstrated that SO 4 − was the dominant reactive species (64.93% relative contribution ratio). By contrast, nonradical oxidation accounted for 95.79% relative contribution ratio to organic pollutants degradation in electrochemically activated PDS process under the identical conditions. The structure difference between PDS ( − O 4 S-SO 4 − ) and PMS (HO-SO 4 − ) led to their various reactivities. The electrochemically activated PMS molecule (PMS*, acting as nonradical oxidation) had higher reactivity and lower stability than electrochemically activated PDS molecule (PDS*, acting as nonradical oxidation), thus to quickly decomposed to SO 4 − . Interestingly, electrochemically activated PMS (radical oxidation system) exhibited stronger resistance towards water background components than PDS (nonradical oxidation system), being suitable to treat the complicated water and wastewater containing various ions and organic compounds.

Electrochemical oxidation (EO) coupled with peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation as a synergistic wastewater treatment process (PDS/EO) was performed to degrade anthraquinone dye-Reactive Brilliant Blue (RBB) in aqueous solution. Introducing PDS into the EO improved the RBB removal than the sole PDS and conventional EO systems. The RBB could activate PDS to a certain degree by itself. By the comparison of various inorganic ions addition, it showed that adding NO 3 − as the background electrolyte was more effective than the systems using the Cl − and SO 4 2− , respectively. In this PDS/EO-NO 3 − system, increasing PDS concentration (1–5 mmol L −1 ) and current density (5–10 mA cm −2 ) considerably promoted the degradation of RBB. The adjustment of the solution pH displayed that the acidic and neutral condition was beneficial to the RBB removal, and the synergistic effect was inverse ratio to the RBB initial concentration. Furthermore, the scavenger experiments verified that both SO 4 · − and HO· were the major active substances in the RBB decomposition, and other reactive oxygen species also had considerable contributions. Thereinto NO 3 − only act a catalytic agent to improve the generation of active matters in the PDS/EO-NO 3 − . Overall, the proposed synergistic process could serve as an efficient method for the degradation of anthraquinone dye.

High-energy-density lithium metal batteries hold great promise for advancing low-altitude economic development. However, the practical application of ultrathin lithium anodes remains challenging due to significant interfacial side reactions, dendrite formation, and substantial volume fluctuations. In this study, lithium metal electrodes were fabricated using a spin-coating process, enabling an in situ reaction between lithium and phenyl disulfide (PDS). The resulting robust organic sulfurization interface, composed of lithium thiophenoxide, facilitates rapid lithium-ion transport and effectively suppresses dendrite formation. Symmetric cells with a 50 μm Li@PDS anode exhibited an impressive lifespan exceeding 3000 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . The Li@PDS anode demonstrated excellent structural stability in a practical LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)||Li@PDS pouch cell, maintaining 94.8% of its initial capacity (1.45 Ah) over 260 cycles at a 0.4C rate and 87.30% of its initial capacity (1.1 Ah) over 360 cycles at a 2C rate (1C = 200 mA g −1 ). This work provides a promising pathway for developing durable lithium metal anodes suitable for scalable practical applications. Graphical abstract

The development of fluorescent nanosensors has attracted extensive research interest owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, current fluorescent nanoprobes generally involve complicated synthesis processes, background signal disturbance, and limited analyte detection. In this work, a facile and time-saving synthetic strategy for the preparation of green emitting polydopamine polymer dots (PDA–PDs) from dopamine via Fenton reaction at room temperature was proposed for the first time. The obtained PDA–PDs possessed excellent luminescence properties, with a long-wavelength emission of 522 nm, a large Stokes shift of 142 nm, and good photostability against ionic strength and UV irradiation. The formation mechanism of fluorescent PDA–PDs is as follows: in the presence of Fe2+ and H2O2, dopamine could rapidly undergo oxidation to its quinone derivatives and further polymerize to synthesize the fluorescent PDA–PDs with the acceleration of hydroxyl radicals produced from the Fenton reaction. Thus, a versatile turn-on fluorescence sensing method was developed for the detection of multi-analytes (including Fe2+, dopamine, H2O2, and glucose) based on monitoring the intrinsic fluorescence signal of the in situ formation of PDA–PDs. This sensing method could be efficiently applied for the detection of Fe2+, dopamine, and glucose in real human serum samples. Moreover, a three-input AND molecular logic gate based on this sensing platform was designed with the fluorescence signal of PDA–PDs as the gate. Finally, the proposed PDA–PDs could have immense broad prospects in nanomaterials and biosensors.

The degradation of indomethacin (IM) by ferrous ion-activated potassium peroxydisulfate (Fe2+/PDS) was investigated. We aimed to determine the optimal conditions for the removal of IM under different concentrations of Fe2+and PDS, evaluate the effects of operational parameters (solution pH, humic acid (HA), N2 bubbling and persulfate species), and propose the degradation mechanism of IM by the Fe2+/PDS system. The sequential addition of Fe2+ led to an improvement in the IM degradation and TOC removal efficiency. When the molar ratio of IM/PDS/Fe2+ was 1 : 1.5 : 2, the IM was almost completely degraded. Restrictions to the degradation efficiency of IM were caused by increasing the solution pH, bubbling with nitrogen, or through the addition of HA. A low concentration of Cl− had no effect on the reaction, while a high concentration led to a dramatic inhibitory effect. In addition, quenching experiments revealed that SO4˙− was the major active radical for the degradation of IM by ferrous ion-activated peroxydisulfate. Based on the identification of transformation products by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the pathways of the ferrous–peroxydisulfate oxidative system for the degradation of IM were tentatively proposed.

UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) process is known to be highly efficient for degrading micropollutants from water by generating sulfate (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO • ). Reliable analyses of short-lived SO 4 •− and HO • are therefore critical for understanding reaction mechanisms and optimizing operating conditions. Currently, alcohols are commonly used as quenchers to distinguish radicals based on the assumption that they exclusively react with target radicals without other influences. However, this study for the first time reveals a series of unexpected effects that challenge this conventional wisdom because: 1) adding alcohols altered the decomposition rates of PDS by replacing the reactions between SO 4 •− and HO • with PDS by the reactions between secondary reactive species and PDS; and 2) SO 4 •− preferably reacted with alcohols to generate nonnegligible level of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) under oxygen-rich conditions, which subsequently led to indirect formation of HO • . Additionally, the formation of H 2 O 2 was substantially impacted by the types of alcohols, dosages, dissolved oxygen, and solution pH. Using probe tests as tools, we found that the actual SO 4 •− levels after dosing alcohols were only slightly different from assumed/expected levels, whereas the actually HO • levels were 43.7, 3364.9, and 12.5 times higher than assumed/expected conditions for samples dosed with methanol, iso-propanol, and tert-butanol, respectively. These unanticipated effects thus suggest that cautions are needed when using alcohols to qualitative and quantitative determine HO • and SO 4 •− in UV/PDS process.

Humic substances are polyelectrolytic macromolecules; their presence in water leads to many environmental problems without effective treatment. In this work, the elimination of humic acid (HA), a typical humic substance, has been examined through ultraviolet (UV) activation systems in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), respectively. The results indicated that 92.9% and 97.1% of HA were eliminated with rate constants of 0.0328 ± 0.0006 and 0.0436 ± 0.0011 min−1 with 180 and 60 min treatment times at pH 6 and 3 when adding 3 and 1 mmol L−1 oxidant during UV/PDS and UV/PMS, respectively; the corresponding electric energies per order were 0.0287 and 0.0131 kW h m−3. The HA removal was systematically investigated by varying different reaction parameters, including radical scavengers, persulphate dose, solution pH, and initial HA concentration, and by addition of various common ions. Moreover, the decomposition details were identified through the changes in the dissolved organic carbon, unique UV absorbances, and UV spectroscopic ratios. Furthermore, the destruction mechanism was verified by fluorescence spectroscopy, demonstrating that the HA structure was decomposed to small molecular fractions in the two UV/persulphate systems. In addition, the purification of HA by the two UV/persulphate processes was assessed in actual water matrices.
