Low-Dimensional Phase Distribution of Quasi-2D Perovskites Induced by Interfacial Effect Enables Efficient Blue Lighting-Emitting Diodes

Linlin Xu,Zhixian Wu,Chunli Jiang,Mengqin Liu,Bo Li,Hechun Lin,Weimin Liu,Hui Peng,Chunhua Luo

Although tremendous advances have recently been achieved in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), development of the blue PeLEDs needed to achieve full-color displays is far behind the red and green counterparts. Here, a simple and effective interface engineering strategy is reported to achieve efficient blue PeLEDs by modifying poly(3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic (PEDOT:PSS) substrate with an amphiprotic molecule glycine. As a multifunctional additive, glycine can not only modulate the pH of PEDOT:PSS, but also trigger strong interfacial effect. Cooperative coordination and hydrogen bonding interactions between glycine and perovskite at the interface can passivate the interfacial defects and manipulate upper perovskite crystallization. Therefore, high-quality perovskite films with grade-distributed phases are obtained, enabling efficient cascade energy transfer and suppression of leakage current. The resulting PeLED exhibits the electroluminescence (EL) peak at 473 nm with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.2%, which is ≈5.5 times that of the unmodified device. Realizing the regulation of low-dimensional phase distribution of quasi-2D perovskites through interfacial effect provides a reliable way to fabricate efficient blue PeLEDs.

Improved performance of quasi-two dimensional perovskite light-emitting diodes with l-phenylalanine-doped PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer

Ai Yansong,He Hongshen,Shen Peng,Wang Zhenyang,Zhang Hui,Zhou Yuanming,Mei Fei

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic devices due to their excellent performance. Here, the performance of PeLEDs was improved by utilizing l -phenylalanine-doped PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layer (HTL). The optimal device with l -phenylalanine doped HTL shows a maximum luminance of 3800 cd/m 2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 2.80%. Compared with the control device using pure PEDOT:PSS HTL, the maximum luminance was increased by 90%, and the maximum external quantum efficiency was increased by 154%, respectively. This is mainly due to the fact that PEDOT:PSS with l -phenylalanine doping optimizes the morphology of the perovskite film and suppresses the exciton quenching at the HTL/perovskite interface. In addition, moderate addition of l -phenylalanine can enhance the hole injection capability of HTL. These experimental results provide proof of amino acid-modified PEDOT:PSS as HTL and a basis for improving the performance of PeLEDs.

Bidirectional Inhibiting Interfacial Ion Migration in the Inorganic Hole Transport Layer for Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Lunyao Pan,Xiankan Zeng,Yuanxiao Qu,Maolin Mu,Shiyu Yang,Yongjian Chen,Chenglong Li,Linzhu Dai,Li Tao,Hongqiang Xin,Wen Li,Weiqing Yang

Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) is strong candidate for hole transport in perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) due to their cost-effectiveness, deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and high hole mobility. However, its inherent polymetallic ions usually deteriorate the quality of the perovskite emission layer (EML) affecting device performance. In this study, a bidirectional anchoring strategy is proposed by adding 15-crown-5 ether (15C5) into CZTS hole transport layer (HTL) to suppress the reaction between HTL and EML. The 15C5 molecule interacts with Cu + , Zn 2+ and Sn 2+ cations forming host–guest complexes to impede their migration, which is elucidated by density functional theory calculations. Additionally, 15C5 can neutralize lead (Pb) defects by the abundant oxygen (O) and high electronegative cavities to reduce the nonradiative recombination of FAPbBr 3 film. This bidirectional anchoring strategy effectively improves hole charge transport efficiency and suppresses nonradiative recombination at the HTL/EML interface. As a result, the optimized PeLEDs present a 3.5 times peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) from 3.12% to 11.08% and the maximum luminance ( L max ) increased from 24495 to 50584 cd m −2 . These findings offer innovative insights into addressing the metal ion migration issue commonly observed in inorganic HTLs.

Improving the efficiency and stability of inorganic red perovskite light-emitting diodes using traces of zinc ions

Xiao-Yi Cai,Yi Yu,Yong-Chun Ye,Yang Shen,Ming-Lei Guo,Jing-Kun Wang,Kong-Chao Shen,Yan-Qing Li,Jian-Xin Tang

Metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have been recognized as emerging candidates for next-generation solution-processed electronic display technology, and great progress has been made in recent years. However, their poor operational stability is yet to be solved. Here, we present a reformative all-inorganic red-emission PeLED based on the passivation effect caused by the incorporation of zinc ions into perovskites for enhancing the efficiency and operational stability. A high-quality quasi-two-dimensional perovskite CsPbI3−xBrx thin film with good crystallinity is obtained, benefiting from the combination of large organic ammonium ions (PEA+ ions) and inorganic salt zinc iodide (ZnI2). As a result, ZnI2-passivated CsPbI3−xBrx PeLEDs emitting at 666 nm show a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.93% and a maximum brightness of 4258 cd m−2. More importantly, the PeLEDs achieve a long half-lifetime of about 2667 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m−2. This work provides a facile method to obtain stable and efficient red-emission PeLEDs.

Conjugated amidine ligands enhance the performance of perovskite nanocrystal blue light-emitting diodes prepared in air with green solvents

Teng Li,Huijun Zhang,Cong Yu,Pang Wang,Hui Wang,Xiaoshuai Zhang,Yuandong Sun,Dan Liu,Tao Wang

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are attracting increasing attention due to their potential in fabricating high-performance perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Compared to those of green and red PeLEDs, the performance of blue PeLEDs lags far behind, which seriously hinders the application of perovskite NCs in full-color lighting and display applications. Among the various strategies to improve the performance of blue PeLEDs based on perovskite NCs, surface ligand engineering shows great potential. Herein, amidine ligands, including acetamidine hydrochloride (AMCl), pentanimidamide hydrochloride (PMCl) and benzamidine hydrochloride (BMCl), are introduced into room-temperature synthesized CsPbBrxCl3−x NCs in air using green solvents, which are found to reduce both Cs+ and halide vacancies on the NC surface and suppress nonradiative recombination. The π-conjugated amidine BMCl can also improve the charge transport of perovskite NCs, leading to spectrally stable blue PeLEDs with a dramatically reduced turn-on voltage from 4.4 to 3.0 V, and an enhanced EQE of 2.30% and a luminance of 205 cd m−2 at 479 nm.

Rational Interface Engineering for Efficient Flexible Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Yang Shen,Meng-Ni Li,Yanqing Li,Feng-Ming Xie,Hai-Yan Wu,Guang-Hui Zhang,Li Chen,Shuit-Tong Lee,Jian-Xin Tang

Although perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are promising for next-generation displays and lighting, their efficiency is still considerably below that of conventional inorganic and organic counterparts. Significant efforts in various aspects of the electroluminescence process are required to achieve high-performance PeLEDs. Here, we present an improved flexible PeLED structure based on the rational interface engineering for energy-efficient photon generation and enhanced light outcoupling. The interface-stimulated crystallization and defect passivation of the perovskite emitter are synergistically realized by tuning the underlying interlayer, leading to the suppression of trap-mediated nonradiative recombination losses. Besides approaching highly emissive perovskite layers, the outcoupling of trapped light is also enhanced by combining the silver nanowires-based electrode with quasi-random nanopatterns on flexible plastic substrate. Upon the collective optimization of the device structure, a record external quantum efficiency of 24.5% is achieved for flexible PeLEDs based on green-emitting CsPbBr3 perovskite.

Mixed-ligand engineering of quasi-2D perovskites for efficient sky-blue light-emitting diodes

Siyuan Zeng,Shasha Shi,Shirong Wang,Yin Xiao

Achieving efficient blue emission with spectrum stability in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is a great challenge, although the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of PeLEDs for red and green emission has exceeded 20%. Here, we report efficient sky-blue PeLEDs with high brightness based on mixed-ligand confined quasi-2D perovskites. By detailed characterization of the optical and physicochemical properties of n-butylammonium (BA) or 2-phenylethylammonium (PEA)-based perovskites with various alkyl ammonium bromides as co-ligands, it is found that the molecular size and charge on the amino-groups of the co-ligand hold the key to constructing effective mixed-ligand systems. Accordingly, dimethylammonium (DMA) is an ideal co-ligand in both BA- and PEA-based quasi-2D perovskites. Thanks to its appropriate molecular size, DMA could help to confine the diameter of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) and improve their dispersity in organic ligands. Besides, DMA is prone to disperse among PEA or BA molecules to cap the perovskite synergistically, and the phase of n = 1 caused by excess co-ligands could be effectively avoided benefiting from the relatively weak coordination ability of DMA due to the relatively small positive charge on amino-groups. The optimized PeLEDs based on BA2DMA1.6Cs2Pb3Br11.6 and PEA2DMA1.2Cs2Pb3Br11.2 exhibit color-stable sky-blue (490 nm) and bluish green (499 nm) emission with a record maximum luminance of 2825 and 7760 cd m−2 respectively. The applicability of this approach in the red emission region is also demonstrated, which provides a versatile strategy for full spectrum modulation.

Highly Emissive Quasi-2D Perovskites Enabled by a Multifunctional Molecule for Bright Light-Emitting Diodes

Dongyang Shen,Zhenwei Ren,Qinyi Li,Chengzhao Luo,Wenlin Xia,Zhishuai Zheng,Wenchen Ma,Jie Li,Yu Chen

Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskite has exhibited great potential to be an ideal luminescent material for perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the low-order phases (especially n = 1 phase) and the inevitable defects result in massive nonradiative recombination and poor emission efficiency. Herein, a multifunctional molecule of tetrabutylammonium dihydrogen phosphate (TDP) is introduced to simultaneously suppress the low-n phase, passivate the defects, and increase the exciton binding energy of the quasi-2D perovskite for massive radiative recombination and thus high emission efficiency. The multifunctional roles of TDP are realized by the synergistic effects of tetrabutylammonium cation and dihydrogen phosphate anion, both of which show strong interaction with the lead bromide octahedron of the perovskite. As a result, the TDP-incorporated perovskite films show a great enhancement of the emission efficiency with a remarkable increase in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 34.6 to 96.9% at the wavelength of 522 nm. The strengthened radiative recombination promotes efficient emission efficiency with over 2.5-fold improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) and current efficiency (CE) from 3.27% and 10.83 cd A–1 to 9.25% and 28.35 cd A–1, respectively, as well as high brightness with over 37% enhancement from 12713 to 17536 cd m–2. Consequently, this work contributes to an efficient approach to employ a multifunctional molecule for highly emissive quasi-2D perovskites and enhanced quasi-2D PeLED performances.

Multifunctional Crystal Regulation Enables Efficient and Stable Sky-Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Yang Shen,Yan-Qing Li,Kai Zhang,Liu-Jiang Zhang,Feng-Ming Xie,Li Chen,Xiao-Yi Cai,Yu Lu,Hao Ren,Xingyu Gao,Haijiao Xie,Hongying Mao,Satoshi Kera,Jian-Xin Tang

Perovskite light-emitting didoes (PeLEDs) have shown considerable potential in solution-processable display applications. However, the performance of blue PeLEDs in terms of efficiency and stability hinders their practicality on account of severe trap-mediated nonradiative recombination losses and halide phase segregation. To ameliorate these issues, mixed-halide sky-blue perovskite materials are strategically modulated through crystal defect passivation with a trifurcate isocyanate oligomer, which leads to the synergistical suppression of charge trap density and halide ion migration. The proposed approach enables the performance improvement for sky-blue PeLEDs, exhibiting a peak external quantum efficiency of 14.82% and spectrally stable emission at 487 nm. In addition, prolonged operational lifetime and enhanced capability of moisture resistance are achieved simultaneously, approaching a half-lifetime of ≈2900 s at an initial brightness of 178 cd m –2 .
