Mitigating SO2 poisoning during CO oxidation over Pt/Al2O3 catalysts via sulfur spillover from highly under-coordinated platinum to the Al2O3 support

Xiao Yang,Heying Zhao,Aiyong Wang,Wangcheng Zhan,Yanglong Guo,Li Wang,Xuan Tang,Yun Guo

SO 2 in the sintering flue gas severely inhibits the CO oxidation performance of commercial Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. However, the major poisoning mechanism of SO 2 on Pt/Al 2 O 3 in CO oxidation in the presence of H 2 O remains to be elucidated. Here, Pt/Al 2 O 3 was pretreated with different reducing atmospheres at high temperatures. Among these, the catalyst pretreated with a CO atmosphere at 600 °C (denoted as Pt/Al 2 O 3 -CO-600) exhibited superior CO oxidation performance and enhanced sulfur resistance in the presence of both H 2 O and SO 2 . The combination of XPS, HAADF-STEM, TG-MS, SO 2 oxidation test, and in-situ DRIFTS reveal that the Pt species on Pt/Al 2 O 3 -CO-600 transformed from Pt oxide clusters to metallic Pt nanoparticles. This transformation enhanced SO 2 adsorption and reactivity, leading to increased sulfate accumulation. Despite the high SO 2 reactivity and sulfate content, in-situ DRIFTS revealed that the CO reaction of Pt/Al 2 O 3 -CO-600 was less hindered by SO 2 and the sulfated Al 2 O 3 . This is attributed to the high ratio of the under-coordinated (UC) Pt sites in Pt/Al 2 O 3 -CO-600, which promotes the reaction intermediates spillover from Pt site to Al 2 O 3 compared to the Pt/Al 2 O 3 . This phenomenon was positively correlated with the sulfur resistance of reduced catalysts. Accordingly, the UC site contributes to the spillover of sulfate intermediate (H 2 SO 4 ), reducing the CO reactivity loss of Pt/Al 2 O 3 due to the intermediate coverage. This study elucidates that the primary poisoning pathway of Pt/Al 2 O 3 in the presence of H 2 O and SO 2 is the difficulty of sulfate intermediate spillover.

Pt/Al2O3 for Efficient CF4 Hydrolytic Decomposition

Zihao Wang,Xiangchen Huang,Min Xie,Tianyang Yin,Renhong Chen,Wenjie Luo,Jun Liu

Tetrafluoromethane (CF4) is one of the most stable perfluorinated compounds because of its highly symmetric molecular structure and extremely strong C–F bonds. Catalytic hydrolysis provides a promising route for CF4abatement, yet the development of efficient catalysts capable of activating C–F bonds at reduced temperatures remains challenging. Herein, Pt-modified Al2O3catalysts were prepared to promote CF4decomposition through the regulation of surface acidity, CF4adsorption, and hydroxyl formation. NH3temperature-programmed desorption revealed that Pt introduction significantly enhanced the surface acidity of Al2O3, while CF4temperature-programmed desorption demonstrated strengthened CF4adsorption over Pt/Al2O3. In situ infrared spectroscopy further showed that Pt incorporation promoted the generation of surface hydroxyl groups under reaction-relevant conditions. These hydroxyl species are proposed to participate in C–F bond activation during CF4hydrolysis. As a result, Pt/Al2O3achieved complete CF4decomposition at 600 °C and maintained excellent stability during the long-term test, clearly outperforming pristine Al2O3. This work demonstrates that Pt/Al2O3is an effective catalyst for CF4decomposition by coupling enhanced acidity, improved CF4adsorption, and hydroxyl-assisted C–F bond activation.

Selective Hydrogenation of Anthracene to Symmetrical Octahydroanthracene over Al2O3-Supported Pt and Rh Catalysts Prepared by Strong Electrostatic Adsorption

Xiuhong Zhang,Dong Wang,Xiao Chen,Longwei Meng,Changhai Liang

The hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) over highly efficient and stable catalysts to fine chemicals and intermediates for producing chemical materials is an effective approach to realize the high value-added utilization of coal tar and slurry oil. Herein, two kinds of Al2O3-supported Pt and Rh catalysts are synthesized by strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) and used to catalyze the hydrogenation of anthracene. Compared with the traditional catalysts synthesized by wet impregnation, the Pt/Al2O3-SEA and Rh/Al2O3-SEA catalysts have smaller active metal particle sizes and higher dispersion, which can expose more active centers, showing higher catalytic activity. Interestingly, anthracene may be preferentially adsorbed on the surface of the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst in a parallel manner but on the surface of the Rh/Al2O3 catalyst in a lateral manner, which leads to the different hydrogenation routes. 9,10-Dihydroanthracene is an initial product for the hydrogenation of anthracene, which is rearranged into tetrahydroanthracene and subsequently hydrogenated to symmetrical octahydroanthracene (sym-OHA) over the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. The high selectivity to sym-OHA (93%) with the conversion of anthracene near 100% can be achieved in the hydrogenation of anthracene at 240 °C and 7 MPa for 10 h. Additionally, due to the strong anchoring effect, the Pt/Al2O3-SEA catalyst shows high stability for six cycles. This work supplies a new tactic to develop high-performance catalysts for selective hydrogenation of PAHs to important monomers for synthesizing chemical materials.

Interface modulation of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst and their roles in thermal stability

Changjin Xu,Yinglei Liu,Baljeet Singh,Shiyuan Yi,Gaowu Qin,Song Li

Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs . The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al 3+ in Al 2 O 3 N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al 2 O 3 N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al 2 O 3 N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Al penta 3 + (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al 2 O 3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al 3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

Selenium-modulated Pt/Al2O3 electronic structure induces deactivation during catalytic CO oxidation

Tian Tang,Jianing Ma,Jingyu Xue,Xiaoqiang Shen,Jinfei Chen,Linhan Yu,Vladislav Rac,Vesna Rakić,Xinbao Li,Hao Song,Xuesen Du

Industrial sources, such as steel and power activities continue to emit substantial amounts of CO, but have not received the same level of attention as mobile sources due to a lack of relevant regulations. This work reports that a commercial Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst used in vehicle CO catalytic converters may face severe selenium (Se) poisoning deactivation from industrial sources. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (250 °C) decreased from 2.18 s −1 to 0.12 s −1 with only 0.49 wt% (ICP) Se deposition. Se deposition causes the Pt 5d orbital shift to a higher energy state, raising the oxidation state of platinum. As a result, the back-donation from the 5d electrons of Pt to the 2π* antibonding orbital of the adsorbed CO molecule is inhibited, weakening the bonding between Pt/Al 2 O 3 and the CO antibonding orbital, thereby significantly reducing CO activation ability. DRIFTS results, combined with apparent and microscopic kinetics, indicate that the surface of Se deposited Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst remains O* available (500 K, θ O* = 0.16), and the rate-controlling step changes from O 2  + 2* → 2O* to CO + * → CO*. The work suggests that the application of CO catalytic oxidation technology for industrial source should fully consider the toxic effect of Se, but is often neglected.

Catalytic dehydrogenation of perhydro-monobenzyltoluene over Pt/Al2O3 for continuous hydrogen release

Changgui Wu,Mengke Xu,Feifei Song,Biao Ma,Fuling Li,Chengxiang Shi,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ruijie Gao,Xiangwen Zhang,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou

Monobenzyltoluene (H0-BT) is a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), and continuous reaction process represents a more favorable approach in the large-scale hydrogen storage. In this work, the impacts of Pt loading and reaction conditions on the dehydrogenation performance of perhydro-monobenzyltoluene (H12-BT) over Pt/Al 2 O 3 were conducted in a fixed-bed reactor. The results indicate that the dehydrogenation activity of catalyst shows a volcano type as increasing Pt loading, reaching a maximum at 3 wt%. 1 wt% Pt loading is the most appropriate in consideration of the dehydrogenation activity and hydrogen purity. High reaction temperature and low pressure can facilitate dehydrogenation kinetics but result in the undesired byproducts, therefore, the optimal reaction conditions are 320 °C and 0.7 MPa. Additionally, the dehydrogenation performance of H12-BT and perhydro-dibenzyltoluene (H18-DBT) were compared under the similar conditions, revealing that H12-BT may be a superior hydrogen storage carrier.

Propane-Induced Pt/Al2O3 Surface Reconstruction for Catalytic Reforming Reaction of n-Heptane

Chuang Gao,Didi Li,Huihua Pan,Hansheng Wang,Yifeng Zhu,Yiying Tang,Minghui Zhu,Zixu Yang,Jing Xu

Controlling product selectivity in platinum-based catalysts during hydrocarbon reforming is a critical challenge, with the main difficulty being the suppression of side reactions like hydrogenolysis. In this work, we report a facile and scalable in situ strategy that significantly enhances the yield of aromatics by activating Pt/Al2O3 catalyst in a propane atmosphere. We demonstrate that this method results in selective deposition of a functional carbon overlayer onto excessively active metal–support interface sites, thereby suppressing the hydrogenolysis pathway, the primary source of low-carbon byproducts. As a result, the selectivity for aromatics nearly doubled, increasing from 17% for the conventionally hydrogen-reduced catalyst to 32%. This work not only transforms carbon deposition from a deactivation factor into a tool for precisely tuning active sites but also provides a powerful strategy for developing highly efficient reforming catalysts.

Efficient conversion of ethylene glycol to indole by hydrophobic modified Pt/Al2O3 catalyst

Juan Zhang,Yu Wei,Zhiquan Wu,Hang Gao,Wenchao Gao,Libo Li,Yang Chen,Honghong Chang

To address the issue of water formation leading to the collapse of catalyst structure and diminished catalytic activity during the synthesis of indole via reaction of ethylene glycol and aniline, a series of hydrophobic Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts have been engineered through surface chemical modification. Herein, alkyltriethoxysilane and alkyl phosphonic acid were employed as modifiers to decorate the surface of Pt/Al 2 O 3 , preparing hydrophobic catalyst (Pt/Al 2 O 3 -R), and the quantity of these hydrophobic reagents were selectively regulated to ascertain the catalyst with optimal efficiency. In the course of this procedure, the catalyst Pt/Al 2 O 3 -0.03SiC 12 , which exhibited a water contact angle of 112° and an ethylene glycol contact angle of 62°, significantly enhanced the yield of indole to 72%. It has been established that variations in the alkyl chain length impact the hydrophobicity and wettability of ethylene glycol, collectively influencing the catalytic efficiency. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed successful integration of the chemical modifier onto the Al 2 O 3 surface via Si-O bonds. Furthermore, XRD, TEM, and BET results indicate that although the surface hydrophobic modification has a certain impact on the metal-active center, whereas the hydrophobic microenvironment is highly effective for the conversion of ethylene glycol to indole. DFT calculations further supported this finding, showing reduced water adsorption energy on the modified Pt/Al 2 O 3 surface. This study highlights the role of alkyl chains in modulating hydrophobicity and substrate wettability in the context of indole synthesis, offering insights into the design of catalysts for other dehydration reactions.

Morphology Regulation of Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst and its Influences on Methylcyclohexane Dehydrogenation Performance

Wenchen Ren,Xiaomin Dai,Haiqiang Bai,Jing Bai,Rameshwari Verma,Santosh Kumar Verma,Yunhua Xu

The surface properties of the support profoundly affect the performance of the catalyst. In order to guide the rational design of catalysts, we took typical support alumina as an example and systematically studied the influence of Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst morphology on the dehydrogenation reaction of methylcyclohexane (MCH) by synthesizing a series of Al 2 O 3 with different morphologies. Under a comprehensive comparison across multiple dehydrogenation temperatures, the petal-shaped layered Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits better performance than other Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. At 350°C and WHSV = 23.1 h −1 , the MCH conversion rate of the catalyst was 95.1%, and the hydrogen production rate was 383 mmol·gPt −1 ·min −1 . In the 100 h stability test, the performance was stable, with a conversion rate loss of about 0.05%/h. Therefore, precise adjustment of the growth of the support and control of its microscopic characteristics can significantly improve the hydrogen production efficiency of the catalyst in the MCH dehydrogenation reaction.

Single tungsten atom-modified Pt/Al2O3 to boost glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-propanediol

Binbin Zhao,Jieqi Zou,Chen Chen,Qian He,Qiong Tang,Lei Liu,Jinxiang Dong

Pt-WO x -based catalyst has been considered as a promising candidate for the conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol, but the catalytic performance was quite susceptible to the structure and chemical state of WO x species. Herein, we develop a facile approach to construct the single-atom tungsten-doped Al 2 O 3 with a low chemical state through in-situ migration of WO 3 nanoparticles under the H 2 atmosphere. The characterization results demonstrated that the tetrahedral W 5+ could disperse and stabilize the platinum species more effectively, and exhibited stronger interaction with platinum than the octahedral W 6+ species. The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the rich oxygen defects on in-situ generated tetrahedral WO x on the catalyst, which facilitated the construction of Pt-WO x interface and strengthened the synergetic effects between them. The analysis of structure-performance correlation revealed that the mono-dispersed tetrahedral W 5+ species [(-O-) 3 W(=O)] played a pivotal role in tuning catalyst acidity and improving the catalytic performance, which assists the adsorption of glycerol and captures H for in-situ formation of Brønsted acid site, and ultimately affected the selectivity toward 1,3-PDO and catalytic activity.

Effect of Hydroxyl Groups on Metal Anchoring and Formaldehyde Oxidation Performance of Pt/Al2O3

Zhilin Zhang,Guangzhi He,Yaobin Li,Changbin Zhang,Jinzhu Ma,Hong He

Pt/Al2O3 catalysts showing excellent activity and stability have been used in various reactions, including HCHO oxidation. Herein, we prepared Pt–Na/Al2O3 catalysts with a Pt content of 0.05 wt % to reveal the key factors determining the anchoring of Pt as well as the catalytic activity and mechanism of HCHO oxidation. Pt–Na/nano-Al2O3 (denoted as Pt–Na/nAl2O3) catalysts with 0.05 wt % Pt content could completely oxidize HCHO to CO2 at room temperature, which is the lowest Pt content used in HCHO catalytic oxidation to our knowledge. After Na addition, terminal hydroxyl groups (denoted as HO-μter) on nano-Al2O3 were transformed to doubly bridging hydroxyl groups between Na and Al (denoted as HO-μbri(Na–Al)), which atomically dispersed Pt species. Pt anchoring further promoted the regeneration of HO-μbri(Na–Al) by activating O2 and H2O, oxidizing HCHO to CO2 directly by the fast reaction step ([HCOO–] + [OH]a → CO2 + H2O). Our study revealed that the HO-μbri(Na–Al) synergistically generated by HO-μter and Na species provided anchoring sites for Pt species.

In Situ Investigations on the Facile Synthesis and Catalytic Performance of CeO2-Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst

Chengxiong Wang,Dezhi Ren,Junchen Du,Qinggao Qin,Aimin Zhang,Li Chen,Hao Cui,Jialin Chen,Yunkun Zhao

Ceria-modified Pt/Al2O3catalyst has been commonly prepared by the impregnation of platinum on ceria-modified alumina and widely applied in the chemical industry and automotive industry. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis techniques were employed to investigate the typical mechanisms of the bis(ethanolammonium)hexahydroxyplatinate(IV) and cerium nitrate decomposition catalyzed by Ptδ+species for the facile synthesis of CeO2-Pt/Al2O3catalyst. It was found that Pt4+-catalyzed decomposition of cerium nitrate leads to the higher dispersity of ceria and forming more active oxygen species, on the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and H2temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) results. The in situ activity measurements were also performed to investigate the reaction mechanisms and the specific activities for the catalytic CO, NO, C3H6and C3H8co-oxidation. The results indicate that undesirable N2O by-product is formed by the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by C3H6below 350 °C. The cerium addition effectively improves the activity of catalytic oxidation, but exhibits an increased N2O yield, due to the increased reducibility. Keywords:platinum;ceria;in situ characterization;catalytic oxidation
