Design of Highly Efficient Pt-SnO2 Hydrogenation Nanocatalysts using Pt@Sn Core–Shell Nanoparticles

Miaomiao Liu,Weiqiang Tang,Zhaohui Xie,Hongbo Yu,Hongfeng Yin,Yisheng Xu,Shuangliang Zhao,Shenghu Zhou

In this work, Pt-SnO2 heteroaggregate nanocatalysts were synthesized by in situ transformation of Pt@Sn core–shell nanoparticles and their catalytic performance for hydrogenation of various substituted nitroaromatics was investigated. The Pt@Sn nanoparticles were prepared by a one-step method, and the alumina-supported Pt@Sn nanoparticles were further transformed in situ into Pt-SnO2 heteroaggregate nanostructures by calcination. The structures of Pt@Sn and Pt-SnO2 nanomaterials were characterized, and FT-IR with CO probes, HRTEM, XRD, and XPS characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Pt@Sn nanoparticles were core@shell-like structures with Sn-rich shells and Pt-rich cores and the obtained Pt-SnO2 heteroaggregate nanostructures consisted of close-contact pure Pt and SnO2 phases. The Pt-SnO2/Al2O3 nanostructures demonstrated a better catalytic performance for hydrogenation of various substituted nitroaromatics relative to individual Pt/Al2O3 nanocatalysts. Theoretical calculations suggested that Pt-SnO2 nanocatalysts can slightly facilitate the adsorption of H2 and o-chloronitrobenzene and strongly weaken the binding of Pt/o-chloroaniline, resulting in more available reactants and easier release of products from the catalyst surfaces. The theoretical calculations indicated that the enhanced catalytic performance may originate from a cooperative interaction between Pt and SnO2.

Identification of Active Sites on High-Performance Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst for Cryogenic CO Oxidation

Yang Chen,Yingxin Feng,Lin Li,Jingyue Liu,Xiaoli Pan,Wei Liu,Fenfei Wei,Yitao Cui,Botao Qiao,Xiucheng Sun,Xiaoyu Li,Jian Lin,Sen Lin,Xiaodong Wang,Tao Zhang

Exclusive Pt species supported on inert substrates have not achieved satisfactory performance for cryogenic CO oxidation because of the constraint of the competitive Langmuir–Hinshelwood process in which the strongly adsorbed CO inhibits the activation of O2. Here, we develop a catalyst of Pt nanoparticles on Al2O3 that exhibits extremely high activity with 100% CO conversion at −20 °C and orders of magnitude higher specific rate than current commercial catalysts. Detailed catalyst characterizations reveal the presence of metallic Pt sites and positively charged ones associated with the OH species in Pt/Al2O3. Both experimental data and theoretical calculations suggest that CO adsorbed on Pt(OH) kink sites reacts with OH species covering Pt0 terrace sites to release CO2. Afterward, O2 is facilely activated on terrace sites to regenerate OH. The presence of OH species and the synergy between Pt kink and terrace sites on the Pt species lead to an ultralow reaction barrier for CO oxidation.

The influence of the loading position of Pt/HZSM-22 and Pt/HMOR in the catalyst bed on the n-dodecane hydroisomerization performance

Jiangnan Xiang,Haiying Lu,Wei Zhang,Yujie Duan,Wenrui Jin,Yumeng Guo,Yan Wang,Jinghong Ma,Ruifeng Li,Liming Gai,Xiaowei Wang,Jianle Hou

Pt/HMOR and Pt/HZSM-22 catalysts were prepared by mechanical grinding pre-prepared Pt/Al 2 O 3 (prepared via excess wetness impregnation using H 2 PtCl 6 ·6H 2 O) with HMOR and HZSM-22 zeolites, respectively, at a 1:1 mass ratio. The influence of the loading position of Pt/HZSM-22 and Pt/HMOR in the catalyst bed on the n -dodecane hydroisomerization performance was systematically investigated using n -dodecane as the model reactant. By adjusting the relative positions of Pt/HZSM-22 and Pt/HMOR in catalyst bed, the isomers selectivity and yield of catalyst Pt/HMOR(U)-Pt/HZSM-22(D) (U and D represent the upstream catalyst bed and downstream catalyst bed, respectively) were higher than Pt/HZSM-22(U)-Pt/HMOR(D) and the difference of yield of mono-branched isomers and multi-branched isomers reached the maximum of 31.31 % and 16.78 % at the reaction temperature of 320 °C and 340 °C, respectively. In order to explore the reaction process of isomers on Pt/HZSM-22 and Pt/HMOR, 2-methylpentane was selected as the probe molecule. The results were shown that 2-methylpentane would undergo isomerization reaction on Pt/HMOR to form 2,3-dimethylbutane, while the ability to produce 2,3-dimethylbutane on Pt/HZSM-22 was weaker.

Negatively Charged Single-Atom Pt Catalyst Shows Superior SO2 Tolerance in NOx Reduction by CO

Yongjun Ji,Shaomian Liu,Shaojia Song,Wenqing Xu,Liang Li,Yu Zhang,Wenxing Chen,Huifang Li,Jingang Jiang,Tingyu Zhu,Zhenxing Li,Ziyi Zhong,Dingsheng Wang,Guangwen Xu,Fabing Su

Pt-based catalysts are promising for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by CO (CO-SCR), but some technical issues hinder their practical application, including the high Pt loading needed, high reduction temperature, and the low tolerance toward SO2. Here, we report a novel Pt catalyst for CO-SCR, which has negatively charged single-atom Pt embedded on CuO squares, and the latter is supported on CoAlO nanosheets. This Pt–CuO/CoAlO catalyst with an ultra-low Pt loading (0.02 wt %) exhibited 91% NO conversion and 80% N2 selectivity in 3% O2 at 200 °C. More importantly, it showed almost no activity loss in 200 ppm SO2 over a 15 h test. The theoretical calculations reveal that the negatively charged Pt has a stronger NO adsorption ability than the positively charged Pt, and Cu serves as the CO adsorption site. The much-weakened SO2 adsorption on Pt–CuO/CoAlO relative to the NO and CO adsorption effectively avoids the catalyst poisoning by SO2.

Reduction treatment of nickel phyllosilicate supported Pt nanocatalysts determining product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation

Miaomiao Song,Zhongliang Huang,Bin Chen,Sihan Liu,Shafqat Ullah,Dongren Cai,Guowu Zhan

Catalyst design is one of the most critical factors in selectively converting CO 2 and renewable H 2 to value-added chemicals. In this work, Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 2.9 nm were uniformly loaded on hollow mesoporous nickel phyllosilicate which then underwent various reduction treatments to partial extraction of Ni atoms and formation of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalysts for the selective CO 2 hydrogenation in a fixed bed reactor. Experimental results reveal that Pt nanoparticles supported on SiO 2 are highly selective to CO via reversed water gas shift (RWGS) reaction with 100% CO selectivity, while Pt nanoparticles supported on nickel phyllosilicate show high selectivity for CH 4 , particularly, under high reduction temperature. By simply changing the reduction temperature or reaction pressure, the production selectivity can be facilely tuned, and the maximum CH 4 selectivity achieved in the bimetallic Pt/Ni@phyllosilicate catalyst is 100%. The metallic Ni 0 reduced from nickel phyllosilicate owns a high concentration of Lewis basic sites, which could enhance the adsorption strength of CO 2 but prevent the dissociated adsorption. The diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) in different transient states were applied to study the mechanistic insights into how Ni-Pt dual sites tune the product selectivity. The results suggest that CO* over Pt site is the key species for CO 2 conversion to CO, whereas the produced CO* could be further hydrogenated to CH x O* intermediate over Ni site, leading to the formation of CH 4 . The present work offers a new method to prepare Ni-Pt bimetallic catalysts with excellent CO 2 hydrogenation performance towards CH 4 .

Hydrogen evolution from aqueous-phase photocatalytic reforming of ethylene glycol over Pt/TiO2 catalysts: Role of Pt and product distribution

Fuying Li,Quan Gu,Yu Niu,Renzhang Wang,Yuecong Tong,Shuying Zhu,Hualei Zhang,Zizhong Zhang,Xuxu Wang

Pt nanoparticles were loaded on anatase TiO 2 by the photodeposition method to investigate their photocatalytic activity for H 2 evolution in an aqueous solution containing a certain amount of ethylene glycol (EG) as the sacrificial agent. The surface properties and chemical states of the Pt/TiO 2 sample were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electrochemical resistance. The aqueous-phase photocatalytic EG reforming using Pt/TiO 2 and anatase TiO 2 generated not only H 2 and CO 2 , but also CO, CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , and C 2 H 4 . Moreover, the amount of formate and acetate complexes in the solution increased gradually. The EG adsorption and gas-phase intermediates during photocatalytic reaction processes were investigated by the in situ FTIR spectrum. Finally, the photocatalytic EG reforming reaction mechanism was elucidated. This helped to better understand the role of a sacrificial agent in a photocatalytic hydrogen production.

More efficiently enhancing photocatalytic activity by embedding Pt within anatase–rutile TiO2 heterophase junction than exposing Pt on the outside surface

Jinjin Lin,Tao Sun,Minbo Li,Jinxiang Yang,Jinni Shen,Zizhong Zhang,Ying Wang,Xiaoyan Zhang,Xuxu Wang

Loading noble metal on the surface has been widely used to improve photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalyst. Here, Pt-embedded anatase (A)-rutile (R) TiO 2 junction photocatalyst (A/Pt/R) was found to show much more efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity than the other TiO 2 photocatalysts loading Pt on the outside surface (such as Pt/A/R, Pt/A, Pt/R and Pt/P25), although the as-embedded Pt is unreachable to reactants. The A/Pt/R sample shows a photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate as high as 17.9 mmol⋅g cat −1 ⋅h −1 , which is 27.2 and 2.5 times higher than the common A/R and Pt/A/R samples, respectively. The traditional theory fails to explain the unexpected high photoactivity. The reverse tandem Schottky junction is suggested to be possibly responsible for the high photoactivity of A/Pt/R, which allows the photogenerated electrons to transfer more swimmingly from rutile to anatase than the common A/R phasejunction. This finding provides a new strategy for further promoting photocatalytic activity of Pt/TiO 2 and other heterophase or heterojunction photocatalysts.

Construction of Co3O4/Pt Catalyst with Interfacial N-Stabilized Co3+-OH-Pt Pair for Highly Efficient CO2 Methanation

Jingru Li,Siyuan Hu,Longmei Shang,Guowu Zhan

Graphical This study investigates N -doped Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalysts synthesized using a Pt-decorated ZIF-67 sacrificial template, followed by a water-soaking treatment to enhance surface hydroxyl (-OH) group content. The interfacial N -stabilized Co 3+ -OH-Pt active sites in N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt improved synergy between cobalt and platinum, enhancing agglomeration resistance and enhancing catalytic performance. CO 2 hydrogenation is a promising method for converting CO 2 into valuable products. Cobalt-based catalysts are favored for their low cost and high activity, but they face challenges from sintering-induced deactivation. This study investigates N -doped Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalysts synthesized using a Pt-decorated ZIF-67 sacrificial template, followed by a water-soaking treatment to enhance surface hydroxyl (─OH) group content. The as-designed N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 64% and CH 4 selectivity of 98% at 340 °C under ambient pressure. It was demonstrated that the interfacial N -stabilized Co 3+ -OH-Pt active sites in N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt improved synergy between cobalt and platinum, enhancing agglomeration resistance and enhancing catalytic performance. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) demonstrated that CO 2 is converted to methane mainly through a formic acid pathway, with no CO detected. This work underscores the critical role of surface hydroxyl groups in promoting CO 2 adsorption and activation, guiding the CO 2 methanation reaction toward efficient methane production.

Pt-Ru atomic alloys confined in mesoporous carbon hollow spheres for accelerating methanol oxidation

Haiyang Wang,Caiyan Gao,Zhongyi Liu,Baojun Li,Young Dok Kim,Jie Feng,Kaihang Sun,Zhikun Peng

Active and durable electrocatalysts are essential for commercializing direct methanol fuel cells. However, Pt-based catalysts, extensively utilized in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), are suffered from resource scarcity and CO poisoning, which degrade MOR activity severely. Herein, Pt 1 Ru x bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by confining Pt 1 Ru x alloys within the shells of mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS) via a vacuum-assisted impregnation method (Pt 1 Ru x @MCHS). The confinement effect induced by mesoporous carbon hollow spheres resulted in a robust structure of Pt 1 Ru 3 @MCHS with an ultrafine dispersion of alloy nanoparticles. The experimental and theoretical results confirmed that the boosting electrocatalytic activity and stability of the MOR over Pt 1 Ru 3 @MCHS were contributed to the regulated electronic structure as well as the superior CO tolerance of atomic Pt site caused by the electronic interaction between single Pt atoms and Ru nanoparticles. This strategy is versatile for the rational design of Pt-based bimetallic catalysts and has a positive impact on MOR performance.

Boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via regulating Pt chemical states

Jiaxing Wu,Xiaoxu Xi,Wei Zhu,Zhuang Yang,Pan An,Yajun Wang,Yuming Li,Yongfa Zhu,Wenqing Yao,Guiyuan Jiang

As a cocatalyst, chemical states of Pt have significant effects on hydrogen evolution activity of photocatalysts, but the effects have not been elucidated. Herein, we report an effective strategy to greatly improve hydrogen production via regulating the chemical states of Pt. A highly efficient C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with high Pt 0 proportion (denoted as 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H) is successfully prepared. Under visible-light condition (λ ≥ 420 nm), 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H (Pt 0 proportion is 60.1%) affords ∼2.316 mmol h −1 g −1 of hydrogen, approximately four-fold higher than that obtained by a photodeposited sample 1.0%-Pt/CN-P (Pt 0 proportion is 8.2%, ∼0.605 mmol h −1 g −1 of hydrogen). Atmospheric treatment increases the amount of Pt 0 species by causing electrons transfer from N element to Pt 2+ in 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H, as proved by in situ experimental investigation and DFT calculations. Mass formation of the Pt 0 species facilitates charge separation. In addition, Pt 0 has a lower hydrogen adsorption energy than that of Pt 2+ ; therefore, photocatalysts containing Pt 0 show an improved hydrogen-evolution performance.

An acetone gas sensor based on nanosized Pt-loaded Fe2O3 nanocubes

Shendan Zhang,Mingjie Yang,Kunyu Liang,Ayse Turak,Bingxue Zhang,Da Meng,Chuanxi Wang,Fengdong Qu,Wenlong Cheng,Minghui Yang

Nanosized Pt-loaded Fe 2 O 3 nanocubes are prepared through, successively, a simple hydrothermal reaction, two-step annealing process and finally reduction with NaBH 4 of H 2 PtCl 4 . The resultant Pt decorated Fe 2 O 3 nanocubes, made up of Fe 2 O 3 nanoplatelets, are hierarchical, hollow and porous, with an average edge length of 200–300 nm. The sensor based on Pt decorated Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibits higher response (R air /R gas  = 25.7) to 100 ppm of acetone gas at lower temperature (139 °C), with a short response-recovery time (3 s/22 s), compared with pure Fe 2 O 3 nanocubes sensor. The Pt-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposite sensor shows excellent potential to act as a low cost, low temperature sensor for acetone gas, with high acetone selectivity under high humidity conditions and with the interference of other gases. Under various environmental conditions designed to mimic exhaled air, the sensor is able to detect ppb amounts of acetone, with high repeatability and stability, making it suitable for applications such as oral diabetic sensors. The attractive chemical and electronic sensitizations of partially oxidized Pt nanoparticles are responsible for the enhancement of acetone sensing performance. Based on the high acetone selectivity, high stability and fast dynamic response, the Pt enhanced Fe 2 O 3 nanocubes sensor is an exceptionally suitable candidate for a low cost acetone sensor, and the proposed approach provides a route to develop gas sensors that can operate at low temperatures for a wide variety of applications.

Catalytic oxidation of CO over Pt/TiO2 with low Pt loading: The effect of H2O and SO2

Chenglin Feng,Xiaolong Liu,Tingyu Zhu,Yutao Hu,Mengkui Tian

Anatase TiO 2 loaded with 0.1wt.% Pt catalyst (0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A) was prepared via the impregnation method, and its CO catalytic oxidation activity was investigated. Noteworthy, introduction of H 2 O into the reaction atmosphere apparently facilitated the catalytic oxidation of CO. Besides, introduction of SO 2 inhibited the catalytic oxidation of CO. In presence of H 2 O and SO 2 , 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A showed outstanding catalytic stability, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric (TG) characterizations suggested that the amount of sulfate species deposited on the 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A treated at 230 °C did not increase with time extension, which might be an important reason for the high sulfur resistance of 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A. XPS results also demonstrated that the dissociation of H 2 O led to considerably increase of hydroxyl groups over the catalyst surface. H 2 18 O isotope-labeling experiments unambiguously showed that C 16 O 18 O was the main product accounting for 88.9%, revealing that the other oxygen atom in the product CO 2 was mostly from H 2 O. Consequently, based on previous researches and our experimental results, the mechanism of H 2 O promoting CO oxidation on 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A catalyst was proposed.
