Tuning Tiδ+-Vo·-Ptδ+ interfaces over Pt/TiO2 catalysts for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of toluene

Lijun Yan,Qing Wang,Wenqiang Qu,Tingting Yan,Hongrui Li,Penglu Wang,Dengsong Zhang

Promoting the ring-opening process is vital to increase the mineralization of aromatic volatile organic compounds. Rational regulation of metal-support interaction is essential for the opening of the aromatic ring over Pt/TiO 2 catalysts. Herein, the Pt/TiO 2 -C catalyst with Ti δ+ -Vo·-Pt δ+ interface obtained by reverse electron transfer is successfully regulated via reduction–oxidation treatment for efficient photocatalytic degradation of toluene. This structure accelerates the pre-activation of toluene to generate abundant reactive intermediate species for the photocatalysis reaction. On the other hand, the special interface endows Pt/TiO 2 -C the ability to produce more reactive oxygen species under illumination, which can synergistically promote the direct opening of benzene ring. The Pt/TiO 2 -C shows a stronger oxidation capacity and a mineralization rate 15% higher than the traditional Pt/TiO 2 . This work proves that reduction–oxidation treatment is an effective approach to modify catalysts for air purification and provides a novel idea for the degradation of other aromatic volatile organic pollutants.

The effect of preparation method on oxygen activation over Pt/TiO2 catalysts for toluene total oxidation

Yiqing Zeng,Yanan Wang,Yahan Meng,Fujiao Song,Shule Zhang,Qin Zhong

Herein, we compared the catalyst formation process of three Pt/TiO 2 catalysts prepared by impregnation (PtTi–I), deposition precipitation (PtTi–D) and photo-deposition (PtTi–P) to investigate its effect on oxgyen activation and toluene oxidation activity. The encapsulation of TiO 2 on Pt particles induced by high temperature strengthened the metal–support interaction (MSI) but inhibited the activation of oxygen over PtTi–I catalyst, thus it showed the poorest activity in toluene oxidation. Since the selective deposition of Pt on certain face of TiO 2 during photo-deposition process, PtTi–P exhibited stronger MSI and higher activity although it possessed much larger Pt particles than PtTi–D.

SnO2nanoparticles endowed Pt-TiO2 bowl nanoarraysenhanced redox ability towards efficient tetracycline hydrochlorideremoval andH2 generation

Dong Wang,Hongyu Zhang,Ping Yang,Xiao Zhang

A novel approach is developed to construct Z -scheme heterojunctions via growing SnO 2 nanoparticles on Pt decorated hollow TiO 2 bowl nanoarrays (TBN) towards efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation and transfer to enhance the redox ability of resulting catalysts. Namely, sample TBN was fabricated using hollow carbon spheres as templates, in which highly crystalline TiO 2 nanoparticles (less than 10 nm) were assembled into nanoarray to construct hollow bowl spheres. Homogeneously distributed small Pt nanoparticles in TBN govern the growth of SnO 2 nanoparticles via a solvent thermal route and finally to create Z -scheme TiO 2 /Pt/SnO 2 heterojunctions. Pt loading between SnO 2 and TBN components improved photogenerated charge carrier separation and transfer efficiencies and enhanced photocatalytic performance. TiO 2 /Pt/SnO 2 heterostructure samples exhibited improved performance for tetracycline hydrochloride removal with a pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction constant of k = 0.080 min −1 which were 3.8 and 6.7 times of those of TBN (k = 0.012 min −1 ) and TBN/SnO 2 composites (sample TS, k = 0.021 min −1 ), respectively. Moreover, the photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of TiO 2 /Pt/SnO 2 heterostructures without using co-catalyst was 3511.9 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 which was 2.3 times of that of sample TS using Pt as co-catalyst. These results provided new sights for synthesis of photocatalysts especially for the removal of antibiotic pollutants.

Role of the In-Situ-Formed Surface (Pt–S–O)-Ti Active Structure in SO2-Promoted C3H8 Combustion over a Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Wei Chen,Juan Zheng,Yarong Fang,Yutao Wang,Jinpeng Hu,Yuhua Zhu,Xiaoxiao Zhu,Weihao Li,Qian Zhang,Chuanqi Pan,Baojian Zhang,Xiaofeng Qiu,Sibo Wang,Shuang Cui,Jinlong Wang,Jinsong Wu,Zhu Luo,Yanbing Guo

Typically, SO2 unavoidably deactivates catalysts in most heterogeneous catalytic oxidations. However, for Pt-based catalysts, SO2 exhibits an extraordinary boosting effect in propane catalytic oxidation, but the promotive mechanism remains contentious. In this study, an in situ-formed tactful (Pt–S–O)-Ti structure was concluded to be a key factor for Pt/TiO2 catalysts with a substantial SO2 tolerance ability. The experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the high degree of hybridization and orbital coupling between Pt 5d and S 3p orbitals enable more charge transfer from Pt to S species, thus forming the (Pt–S–O)-Ti structure with the oxygen atom dissociated from the chemisorbed O2 adsorbed on oxygen vacancies. The active oxygen atom in the (Pt–S–O)-Ti active structure is a robust site for C3H8 adsorption, leading to a better C3H8 combustion performance. This work can provide insights into the rational design of chemical bonds for high SO2 tolerance catalysts, thereby improving economic and environmental benefits.

Crystal Engineering of TiO2 for Enhanced Catalytic Oxidation of 1,2-Dichloroethane on a Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Nini Zhang,Xiangmei Li,Yanglong Guo,Yun Guo,Qiguang Dai,Li Wang,Wangcheng Zhan

Crystal engineering of metal oxide supports represents an emerging strategy to improve the catalytic performance of noble metal catalysts in catalytic oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). Herein, Pt catalysts on a TiO2 support with different crystal phases (rutile, anatase, and mixed phase (P25)) were prepared for catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE). The Pt catalyst on P25-TiO2 (Pt/TiO2-P) showed optimal activity, selectivity, and stability, even under high-space velocity and humidity conditions. Due to the strong interaction between Pt and P25-TiO2 originating from the more lattice defects of TiO2, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst possessed stable Pt0 and Pt2+ species during DCE oxidation and superior redox property, resulting in high activity and stability. Furthermore, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst possessed abundant hydroxyl groups, which prompted the removal of chlorine species in the form of HCl and significantly decreased the selectivity of vinyl chloride (VC) as the main byproduct. On the other hand, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst exhibited a different reaction path, in which the hydroxyl groups on its surface activated DCE to form VC and enolic species, besides the lattice oxygen of TiO2 for the Pt catalysts on rutile and anatase TiO2. This work provides guidance for the rational design of catalysts for CVOCs.

Engineering surface defects and metal–support interactions on Pt/TiO2(B) nanobelts to boost the catalytic oxidation of CO

Jinghua Liu,Tong Ding,Hao Zhang,Guangcheng Li,Jinmeng Cai,Dongyue Zhao,Ye Tian,Hui Xian,Xueqin Bai,Xingang Li

Herein, we report the high performance of thermally reduced Pt/TiO2(B) catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of CO. Our findings show that through hydrogen spillover from Pt to TiO2, surface-engineered defects of oxygen vacancies are “constructed” on the TiO2 support during the reduction process, thus generating active surface-adsorbed oxygen species. With an increase of the reduction temperature, the TiO2(B) phase gradually transforms to the anatase phase, which takes place from the bulk to the surface of TiO2, and is eventually completed at 700 °C. Compared with the anatase phase, the oxygen vacancies are more easily formed on the TiO2(B) phase, and the latter has much stronger interactions with Pt, as well. As the reduction temperature increases, the metal–support interaction between Pt and TiO2(B) is strengthened. Meanwhile, we simultaneously observe an increase in the dispersion of Pt, the proportion of Pt0 and the adsorbed oxygen species on the surface. Our findings reveal that for thermally reduced Pt/TiO2 catalysts, surface-adsorbed oxygen and Pt0 are active species for the catalytic oxidation of CO. Among the thermally reduced catalysts, H-600 shows the highest catalytic activity because it has the largest amount of active Pt0 sites and surface-adsorbed oxygen species. In addition, it shows high water vapor resistance.

Three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere composite Pt/TiO2-ZrO2: enhanced performance of photocatalytic degradation and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

An Mingze,Li Li,Zhang Jingjing,Zhao Lijie,Yang Changlong

In this paper, a three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere (3DOH) structure composite Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was prepared by using polystyrene (PS) colloidal spheres as the template and combining with two-step vacuum impregnation method, of which the composition, crystalline structure, morphology, and surface physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (UV-vis/DRS), photoluminescence (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. The results illustrate the crystal type of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 is mainly anatase TiO 2 and tetragonal ZrO 2 phase, which exhibits a three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere structure. Hollow spheres are arranged orderly; moreover, the composite shows a strong absorption in the visible region due to the effect of surface plasmon absorption (SPA) after doping Pt nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic activity of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was investigated by using Congo red as the model molecule. The results show that 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 has good photocatalytic activity under multi-modes photocatalytic experiments, and its activity is higher than that of P25, ZrO 2 , and other Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 not treated by PS colloidal spheres. In addition, the total amount of hydrogen production of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 is 100 times as much as the commercial P25 in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiment (8 h), which shows an excellent photolysis of water hydrogen production activity. The three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere composite 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was prepared by using polystyrene colloidal spheres (PS) as the template and combining with the two-step vacuum impregnation method, which had both good photocatalytic activity under multi-modes and ability on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Accelerating Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation of Pt/TiO2–x by Modulating the Interface Electron Interaction for Efficient Photocatalytic Toluene Oxidation

Haifang Mao,Mengli Xu,Shuangjun Li,Yuqing Ren,Yun Zhao,Jun Yu,Qizhong Zhang,Wenshu Zhao,Gui Zhang,Lan Yan,Zhenmin Xu,Zhenfeng Bian

The activation of surface lattice oxygen is crucial for designing highly efficient photocatalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) purification. Herein, the Pt/TiO2–x catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was successfully prepared via the pyrolysis of the Pt-modified Ti metal–organic framework (MOF) under an air atmosphere. Detailed experimental results and density functional theory calculations revealed that the introduction of oxygen vacancies modulated the electronic configuration of the Pt site and enhanced the charge transfer from Ti to Pt, which created an electronic metal–support Pt–Ti interaction interface (EMSI). The established Pt–Ti interface is favorable for the activation of the surface lattice oxygen adjacent to the Pt site [identified by H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS)] and subsequently facilitates toluene oxidation via a direct ring opening process. This study offers a promising strategy for the design of high-performance photocatalysts for VOC oxidation.

Local Environment and Electronic Structure of Pt-TiO2 Catalysts Define the Reactivity of CO Oxidation and C3H8 Combustion: the Crystal Phase of TiO2 Determining

Jinshi Dong,Ting Li,Shengtong Li,Panpan Chang,Qianqian Jin,Jiaqiang Yang,Zhuangzhuang Lai

CO and C3H8, as typical inorganic and organic gaseous pollutants, respectively, require distinct oxidation catalysts for efficient conversion due to their unique properties. In this work, Pt catalysts with different crystal phases of TiO2 (anatase and rutile) as supports were fabricated and investigated for CO oxidation and C3H8 combustion. The surface nature of TiO2 dramatically affects the local environment and electronic properties of supported Pt. Pt-TiO2(R) exhibited superior activity for CO oxidation, whereas Pt-TiO2(A) showed higher reactivity for C3H8 total oxidation. It is concluded that Pt-TiO2(R) contains more oxygen vacancies at the interfacial Pt perimeter sites than Pt-TiO2(A) after reduction pretreatments, which facilitates CO oxidation through the Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. The electron-deficient Pt in Pt-TiO2(A) promotes the adsorption and activation of C3H8, and the amount of charge transfer between Pt and adsorbate intermediates during C3H8 oxidation determines the preference of C-C cleavage or dehydrogenation. Lower charge transfer in Pt-TiO2(A) makes C–C cleavage more efficient and contributes to the total oxidation of C3H8. This work emphasizes the importance of engineering material’s local environment and electronic structure to design high-performance oxidation catalysts.

Simultaneously activating molecular oxygen and surface lattice oxygen on Pt/TiO2 for low-temperature CO oxidation

Zhang Tengfei,Zheng Peng,Gao Jiajian,Liu Xiaolong,Ji Yongjun,Tian Junbo,Zou Yang,Sun Zhiyi,Hu Qiao,Chen Guokang,Chen Wenxing,Liu Xi,Zhong Ziyi,Xu Guangwen,Zhu Tingyu,Su Fabing

Developing high-performance Pt-based catalysts with low Pt loading is crucial but challenging for CO oxidation at temperatures below 100 °C. Herein, we report a Pt-based catalyst with only a 0.15 wt% Pt loading, which consists of Pt–Ti intermetallic single-atom alloy (ISAA) and Pt nanoparticles (NP) co-supported on a defective TiO 2 support, achieving a record high turnover frequency of 11.59 s –1 at 80 °C and complete conversion of CO at 120 °C. This is because the coexistence of Pt–Ti ISAA and Pt NP significantly alleviates the competitive adsorption of CO and O 2 , enhancing the activation of O 2 . Furthermore, Pt single atom sites are stabilized by Pt–Ti ISAA, resulting in distortion of the TiO 2 lattice within Pt–Ti ISAA. This distortion activates the neighboring surface lattice oxygen, allowing for the simultaneous occurrence of the Mars-van Krevelen and Langmuir–Hinshelwood reaction paths at low temperatures.

Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroaromatics over Pt/TiO2@S-1 catalyst with Inlaid Strong Metal-Support Interaction

Mengmeng Liu,Jingjing Li,Pengfei Wang,Shuai Chen,Zhengping Dong,Fengwei Zhang

Graphical The encapsulation of Pt/TiO 2 -450H catalyst with SMSI into zeolite silicalite-1 (S-1) is reported. The resulting Pt/TiO 2 @S-1 catalyst dispalyed superior catalytic performance especially for halogenated nitroaromatics and without degradation in selectivity after 7 cycles. It is attributed to the high surface area, SMSI effect in confined space and the pore structure of S-1 with selective adsorption of substrates. The encapsulation of metal nanoparticles (NPs)-based active sites and homogeneous catalysts in nanoporous materials has been of highly research focus for tuning their catalytic activity, selectivity and stability. Although the catalysts with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) hold the reversible encapsulation feature in a certain atmosphere, there is still a lack of systematic research on them in a real confined environment. Herein, we present a highly selective and stable Pt/TiO 2 @S-1 catalyst, which is prepared by in-situ growth of classical silicalite-1 on the external surface of Pt/TiO 2 -450H pre-catalyst with SMSI effect. Encouragingly, the encapsulated 20Pt/TiO 2 @S-1 catalyst demonstrates unprecedented catalytic performance for various nitroaromatics and without any degradation in selectivity after 7 cycles (>99%) for the hydrogenation of 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene. Such situation is attributed to the high surface area, SMSI effect in confined space as well as the pore structure of silicalite-1 with selective adsorption of substrates.

Unveiling the promoting effect of water on formaldehyde oxidation over Pt/TiO2: insights from H/D kinetic isotope effect, in situ FTIR, and DFT

Lu Wang,Siyuan Zhang,Jukun Xiong,Meicheng Wen

Formaldehyde (HCHO), a prevalent indoor volatile organic compound, poses significant health risks to humans even at very low concentrations. As a result, its efficient degradation at room temperature is of utmost importance. However, the detailed mechanism for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde remains unclear, particularly regarding the role of water vapor, which has been subject to considerable debate. In this study, we synthesized Pt-supported TiO2 glass fiber catalysts (Pt/TiO2 GF) via NaBH4 reduction to investigate the reaction pathways and clarify the influence of water vapor on the oxidation process. The reaction mechanism and intermediates were systematically studied at room temperature using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), kinetic isotope effect (KIE) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results revealed a clear reaction pathway of HCHO → DOM → HCOO− → CO2, with formate C–H bond cleavage (HCOO−* + O* → CO2 + OH*) identified as the rate-determining step. Both experimental KIE results and theoretical calculations confirmed that water vapor substantially reduces the activation barrier for this step, significantly promoting formate decomposition and subsequent CO2 formation. This work provides critical insights into the role of water in enhancing formaldehyde oxidation and offers theoretical support for developing efficient catalysts suitable for humid environments.
