Lack of catalytic performance, short life, and high cost are three main problems related to JM-Pt/C catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The introduction of cheap transition metals improves catalytic performance while significantly reducing the cost of the catalysts. Here, we report the synthesis of Pt 3 Co/NC alloy catalysts via coating and pyrolysis treatment . The agglomeration of nanoparticles during the high-temperature alloying process is significantly inhibited by coating with PANI . Remarkably, the obtained Pt 3 Co/NC alloy catalysts exhibit excellent ORR catalytic performance and structural stability in 0.1 mol/L HClO 4 . After 30,000 potential cycles, the mass activity and area-specific activity of Pt 3 Co/NC alloy catalysts are 1.949 and 3.936 times higher, respectively, than that of JM-Pt/C with negligible performance loss. The strong metal-support interaction between N and Pt and the Pt-rich surface restrict the dissolution of Pt and Co, resulting in excellent stability. This synthesis approach provides an effective way to develop active and stable Pt alloy catalysts.

The primary challenge for efficient H2 evolution and hydrogen energy conversion is to develop highly active and stable catalysts with simple and reliable preparation processes. In this regard, we have designed and synthesized a porous carbon-supported low-Pt alloy catalyst (Pt3Co/Co@C composite) using ZIF-67 as a template. It showed uniformly dispersed Pt3Co/Co on the porous carbon layer due to the confinement effect of the porous carbon layer. Pt3Co/Co@C demonstrated excellent activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction in the full pH range, with an overpotential of 187 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 to attain 100 mA/cm2 as well as long-term stability. It also displayed superior mass activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at 0.85 V (vs RHE) compared to the commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the Pt3Co/Co@C catalyst exclusively enabled a four-electron reaction process under ORR conditions without the competitive pathway to H2O2. The current work provides guidance for the design and facile synthesis of Pt-based catalysts with enhanced performance.

Hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting is hampered by the slow kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, Pt 3 Co nano-alloy embedded in cobalt-based N-doped carbon nanotubes (Pt 3 Co@Co@NCNTs) was prepared by one-step high temperature thermal method, achieving energy-saving efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) fabrication by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) coupled with the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Due to the optimal electronic structure of the Pt 3 Co NPs and asymmetric electron transfer in the NCNTs, the Pt 3 Co@Co@NCNTs presents the overpotential of as low as 17 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for the HER, and a mass activity of as high as 1170 mA mg Pt −1 for the MOR in alkaline conditions, which are better than that of commercial Pt/C (η 10 = 35 mV, 692 mA mg Pt −1 ). This dual-electrode cell boasts impressive long-life cycling stability and operates with a cell voltage of only 1.49 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This performance even exceeds that of the commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 electrode pairs. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations have confirmed that the exceptional activity and CO poisoning resistance originate from Co-doping, which leads to a reconfiguration of charge and a reduction in reaction energy barriers for between the rate-determining step of a Volmer procedure in the HER and the formation of *CO to*COOH in the MOR. This study presents a novel approach to achieving efficient HER through overall water splitting.

Pt 3 Co catalysts represent promising substitutes for commercial Pt/C catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, yet their scalable deployment is restricted by inefficient synthesis, insufficient activity and stability. Herein, a functional molecular layer was in-situ constructed on platinum surfaces with the melamine assistance. Melamine acted as a molecular bridge to enrich Co on Pt via hydrogen-bonding interactions and facilitate Pt Co charge transfer. Subsequent medium–low temperature heat treatment yielded a highly ordered Pt 3 Co with strong compressive strain. The catalyst delivers a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.928 V in acidic electrolyte. It exhibits merely 12 mV decay in E 1/2 and 1.5% loss of the electrochemical active surface area after durability test. At low Pt loading, it achieves high power densities of 2.94 W cm −2 for H 2 –O 2 fuel cells and 1.11 W cm −2 for H 2 –Air fuel cells, respectively. Compressive strain weakens the adsorption of intermediate and product H 2 O and accelerates reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the ordered intermetallic structure and robust Pt Co interaction enhance structural stability. This strategy enables the mild and scalable fabrication of high performance ordered Pt 3 Co catalysts. The melamine molecular layer anchored on the platinum surface facilitates cobalt enrichment and promotes interfacial electron transfer, enabling the formation of a highly strained, ordered Pt 3 Co intermetallic catalyst. This structural evolution significantly accelerates the reaction kinetics while concurrently enhancing catalytic stability. Pt-based alloys are important catalysts in fuel cells, especially for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A key problem to be addressed is to develop high-activity ORR catalysts with low Pt loading or, equivalently, to increase the catalytic activity per Pt amount. Here, we report a Pt–Co alloy catalyst with Pt-enriched skin and a Pt–Co core structure via microwave activation and ethylene glycol reduction. The synthesis route is efficient and controllable, resulting in highly active catalysts with a fine particle size and narrow size distribution. The synthesized catalysts show significant advantages in ORR activity compared to commercial catalysts. We proposed that the improved activity and stability are due to a Pt-enriched surface of the Pt3Co catalysts, and such a surface structure is dynamically formed via selective etching of Co during nonequilibrium synthesis under the harsh environment of acid, ethylene glycol reduction, and microwave treatment.

The development of cost-effective, highly active and durable Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a major challenge to advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Hollow nanoarchitecture loaded with metal alloys has been widely used as a nanoreactor to regulate electronic structure of active sites and enhance reactant enrichment. In this study, PtCo alloy nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on both outer and inner surfaces of hollow TiN spheres and carbon composite support (Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C). The optimized Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C nanoreactor delivers a mass activity of 64 mA mg Pt −1 and a specific activity of 0.122 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.90 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M HClO 4 solution. Furthermore, the Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C nanoreactor enables an effective four-electron transfer pathway with high selectivity and low H 2 O 2 yield (less than 3%) toward ORR process. After accelerated durability tests, the half-wave potential of Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C shows a decay of only 24 mV after 10,000 cycles, markedly smaller than Pt/C catalyst (74 mV). The enhanced durability and ORR kinetics of Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C are attributed to the synergistic effect of strain effect in PtCo alloy, strong interactions between PtCo and H-TiN-C, and nanoreactor architecture. These features not only regulate the Pt electronic structure, increasing the Pt 0 content, but also expose more accessible active sites on the outer/inner surfaces to accelerate charge/mass transport. Moreover, alloyed Co atom suppress the dissolution of Pt, endowing an improved durability. This work provides a new strategy for designing efficient and durable Pt-based ORR catalysts for PEMFCs.

The synthesis of high-loading platinum intermetallic compounds (IMCs) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) remains challenging due to severe nanoparticle agglomeration and inhomogeneity during high-temperature annealing. Here, we report a trace lithium chloride (LiCl)-assisted strategy that enables the synthesis of highly ordered Pt3Co IMCs with ultrahigh metal loading (50.43 wt% Pt) and a small particle size (∼3.58 nm). Comprehensive characterization reveals that LiCl lowers the activation barrier for Pt/Co salt reduction by a strong polarization force, while its molten-salt phase accelerates Co diffusion into the Pt lattice and surface atomic rearrangement. The resulting Pt3Co/C catalyst achieves a record oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mass activity (MA) of 0.86 ± 0.04 A mgpt−1 in rotating disk electrode (RDE) tests. When integrated into PEMFC cathodes, it delivers peak power densities (PPD) of 2.92 W cm−2 (H2–O2) and 1.23 W cm−2 (H2–air) at 80 °C, alongside exceptional stability. Crucially, the MA at 0.9 V reaches 0.61 A mgpt−1, surpassing the U.S. DOE 2025 target (0.44 A mgpt−1) by 39%. This work pioneers a barrier-lowering synthesis paradigm that resolves the fundamental ordering–sintering trade-off in high-temperature IMC fabrication.

A facile two-step method is developed for large-scale synthesis of chemically ordered Pt 3 Co nanoparticles (NPs) as a high-performance catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. Due to the NaCl-matrix as dispersing media avoids the severe aggregation during the high-temperature annealing process, the resulting Pt 3 Co NPs are pure and well crystallized with narrow size distribution. Furthermore, the chemically ordered Pt 3 Co NPs exhibit excellent HER property in acidic solution. Our methodology can be also applied to synthesis of other Pt-based NPs.

The widespread commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is critically hindered by the lack of catalysts that are simultaneously active and durable for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report a robust electrospinning strategy to the synthesis of ultrafine Pt 3 Co intermetallic nanoparticles (2.6 nm), which are spatially confined within hierarchically porous Co-N-doped carbon nanofibers. The engineered architecture yields superior ORR performance, with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.926 V and a mass activity of 0.63 A mg Pt −1 , which represents a threefold improvement over commercial Pt/C. Crucially, durability assessments reveal a negligible loss of 8 mV in an E 1/2 after 30000 cycles, significantly outperforming the 20 mV degradation observed for Pt/C. A membrane electrode assembly incorporating the Pt 3 Co-CoNC cathode achieves a peak power density of 1.54 W cm −2 and retains 85% of its performance after accelerated durability testing. This work demonstrates that architectural confinement is a robust and effective strategy for designing catalysts that simultaneously achieve high activity and long-term stability, paving the way for advanced fuel cell applications.

Pt single-atom materials possess an ideal atom economy but suffer from limited intrinsic activity and side reaction of producing H2O2 in catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); platinum alloys have higher intrinsic activity but weak stability. Here, we demonstrate that anchoring platinum alloys on single-atom Pt-decorated carbon (Pt-SAC) surmounts their inherent deficiencies, thereby enabling a complete four-electron ORR pathway catalysis with high efficiency and durability. Pt3Co@Pt-SAC demonstrates an exceptional mass and specific activities 1 order of magnitude higher than those of commercial Pt/C. They are durable throughout 50000 cycles, showing only a 10 mV decay in half-wave potential. An in situ Raman analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that Pt3Co core nanocrystals modulate electron structures of the adjacent Pt single atoms to facilitate the intermediate absorption for fast kinetics. The superior durability is attributed to the shielding effect of the Pt-SAC coating, which significantly mitigates the dissolution of Pt3Co cores. The hybridizing strategy might promote the development of highly active and durable ORR catalysts.
