Herein, we synthesized PtCo/CNTs, Pt/CNTs, and Co/CNTs nanocatalysts at room temperature by chemical reduction method. The synergistic effect in PtCo/CNTs for crotonaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation is investigated. The nanostructures , morphologies, electronic property, Pt–Co interaction, surface characteristic and composition of the catalysts are examined by XRD , BET, SEM, XPS, HRTEM , STEM, STEM-EDX elemental maps and line profiles and H 2 -TPD. It is found that Pt and Co forms PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles in the PtCo/CNTs catalyst and the PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles are coated on multi-walled carbon nanotubes. And PtCo/CNTs achieves 83.5% CAL conversion, 91.3% crotyl alcohol (COL) selectivity, and 647.4 h −1 turnover frequency (TOF) at 60 °C within 2 h under 3 MPa hydrogen, and its catalytic performance remains basically unchanged after five recycles. According to the analysis, the presence of PtCo bimetallic particles lead to electron transferring from Co to Pt (synergy effect), which improves their activation ability of hydrogen and desorption of C C in COL and thus enhances its selectivity to COL.

The hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to aromatic amines is widely applied in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industries. However, the high cost of traditional precious metal-supported catalysts limits their industrial development. To address this, a PtCo alloy nanoparticle catalyst supported on CePO 4 (CePO 4 /PtCo) was designed. The catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of nitroaromatics under 60 °C and 5 bar H 2 , achieving 100 % conversion of p-nitrophenol and 98.2 % selectivity to aromatic amines within 50 min. Catalytic mechanism studies indicate that the multi-level modulation of active sites is achieved through the synergistic interplay of dual mechanisms: electron transfer within PtCo alloys and metal-support interactions between PtCo and CePO 4 . This multiple synergy enables precise electronic tuning of Pt sites, enhancing the adsorption capacity for nitroaromatics and reducing the reaction energy barriers of potential-determination steps. Meanwhile, the functional support CePO 4 adsorbs and activates the substrate, providing additional active sites for hydrogenation under hydrogen spillover. The multiple synergistic effects between the components of the catalyst revealed in this study provide new insights for the rational design of heterogeneous catalysts.

The development of catalysts with abundant active interfaces for superior low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation is critical to meet increasingly rigorous emission requirements, yet still challenging. Herein, this work reports a PtCo/CoO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst with PtCo clusters and enriched Pt─O─Co interfaces induced by hydrogen spillover from the Pt sites and self-oxidation process in air, exhibiting excellent performance for CO oxidation at low temperatures and humid conditions. The combination of structural characterizations and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the PtCo cluster effectively prevents CO saturation/poisoning on the Pt surface. Additionally, the presence of Pt─O─Co interfaces in the PtCo/CoO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst provides a significant number of active sites for oxygen activation and ─OH formation. This facilitates efficient generation of CO 2 at ambient temperature by coupling with nearby adsorbed CO molecules, resulting in superior low-temperature activity and long-term stability for CO oxidation under humid conditions. This work provides a facile route toward rationalizing the design of catalysts with more active interfaces for superior low-temperature CO oxidation under humid conditions for practical applications.

Developing platinum-based nanoparticles on carbon catalysts with high activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance for the practical application of fuel cells. Herein, a synchronous strategy of preparing nano-sized PtCo supported on atomic Co and N co-doped carbon nanorods (PtCo/Co–N–C NR) was developed to replace the conventional method of impregnating Pt sources into ready-made carbon materials , in which metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Co and Zn ions of rhombic dodecahedron were first prepared using 2-methylimidazole as building block and then their morphology was transformed into porous nanorods via the reduction of Co ions to Co–B–O complex in the MOFs by NaBH 4 ; subsequently, Pt was deposited on the Co–Zn MOF nanorods through the displacement reaction of PtCl 6 2 - and metallic Co and coordination between MOF and PtCl 6 2 - ; after pyrolysis and acid-leaching process, highly dispersed PtCo/Co–N–C NR was obtained. Attributed to its unique characteristics of hierarchical pore structure , uniform PtCo alloy nanoparticles with the average size of 7.0 nm and strong supporting interaction effect, the catalyst exhibits high ORR activity and stability with the mass activity of 577.0 mA mg −1 Pt and specific activity of 1.4 mA cm −2 at 0.9 V vs RHE in 0.1 M HClO 4 , which is about 3.6 times and 3.5 times high than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst respectively. This strategy would provide a flexible route to develop highly active and stable ORR electrocatalysts with various morphologies for optimizing the exposure of active sites.

Confinement effects in highly porous nanostructures can effectively adjust the selectivity and kinetics of electrochemical reactions, which can boost the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this work, carbonized ZIF-8-confined hollow PtCo nanospheres (PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8) were fabricated using a facile strategy. A monodisperse confined region was successfully prepared, and the dispersion of the PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely regulated, allowing for the effective tuning of the confined region. Thus, the precise regulation of the catalytic reaction was achieved. Importantly, hollow PtCo NPs were prepared using a method based on the Kirkendall effect, and their forming mechanism was systematically investigated. Because of the confinement effects of carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the crystal and electronic structures of the PtCo NPs were able to be effectively tuned. Our electrochemical results show that PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8 composites manifest a higher mass activity (1.4 A mgPt–1) and better stability compared to commercial Pt/C.

A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4–SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal–support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4–SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4–SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4–SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g–1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.

In this work, hierarchical SAPO-34 supported PtCo bimetallic catalysts with different Pt/Co ratios were prepared by impregnation method. The obtained PtCo/SAPO-34 catalysts displayed high catalytic activities and durability for the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB). Among them, Pt 1 Co 5 /SAPO-34 catalyst delivered the highest hydrogen generation activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 262 mol H 2 ( mol Pt ∙ min ) − 1 at 303 K as well as excellent catalytic activity in catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by coupling with hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB, due to the electron interaction of Pt and Co in PtCo alloy and the high metal dispersion and exposure of Brønsted acidic sites on SAPO-34 support. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the prepared Pt 1 Co 5 /SAPO-34 catalyst also exhibited superior recycle stability, with 81% of the initial TOF value after five runs of hydrolysis reaction.

Platinum is the most efficient electrocatalyst to accelerate the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a crucial process at the cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Reducing platinum loading in PEMFCs is critical yet challenging due to its insufficient activity and stability. This study focuses on optimizing the mesoporous structure of nitrogen-doped carbon supports to enhance the activity and stability of the Pt-based catalysts. We synthesized nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) supports with different pore sizes via the hard templating method and then loaded a Pt3Co intermetallic alloy inside the mesopores of NMCs. The resulting PtCo/NMC-4 (with an average mesopore size of ∼5 nm) catalyst exhibits superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.939 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode and a mass activity of 2.36 A gPt–1, which is about 1 order of magnitude higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the physical confinement of mesopores and the strong metal–support interaction induced by nitrogen defects inhibit the aggregation of Pt3Co alloy during cycling, leading to the remarkable durability of PtCo/NMC-4 with a loss in cell potential of 12.7 mV at 0.8 A cm–2 after accelerated durability testing for 30,000 cycles. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of support optimization in enhancing the activity and stability of Pt-based ORR catalysts.

Pt-based alloys demonstrate superior catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), yet their instability due to transition metal leaching poses a critical challenge. While structurally ordered PtM intermetallic compounds (IMCs) exhibit enhanced stability compared to disordered alloys, their conventional high-temperature synthesis often induces particle aggregation and diminished catalytic performance. Herein, we present a solvent-free gas-phase dispersion strategy leveraging the volatility of acetylacetonate precursors to synthesize ordered PtCo IMC nanoparticles (PtCo/C-IMC) with ultrasmall size (3.0 nm) and uniform compressive lattice strain. The PtCo/C-IMC catalyst delivers exceptional ORR activity (0.92 A mg Pt −1 at 0.9 V) and durability (6.8 % mass activity decay after 100,000 cycles). In H 2 -air PEMFCs, it achieves a peak power density of 1.53 W cm −2 at 0.6 V and demonstrates outstanding operational stability, with voltage losses of only 17 mV (0.8 A cm −2 ) and 21 mV (1.5 A cm −2 ) after 30,000 accelerated durability test (ADT) cycles, surpassing the DOE 2025 targets and outperforming most reported catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and post-ADT characterization reveal that the engineered compressive strain strengthens Pt-Co atomic interactions, optimizes the electronic structure, and elevates the vacancy formation energy of Co. These effects enhance both catalytic activity and stability, offering a scalable pathway for the design of advanced PEMFC catalysts.

In this work, PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) on hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon (PtCo/OMC) are synthesized for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) aiming to improve the activity and durability of the Pt-based catalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Specifically, the OMC is prepared through a solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method by using a triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as the structure agent, followed by annealing in the nitrogen atmosphere to decompose the structure agent and to carbonize the carbon precursor. PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated with an average diameter of 3.3 nm by H 2 reduction and galvanic replacement in an acid solution, and then are uniformly dispersed onto the OMC via impregnation. The typical mesoporous structure of the OMC enhances the uniformly distribution and thermal stability of the small-sized PtCo NPs. The activity and the durability of the as-prepared PtCo/OMC catalyst are investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and single-cell test. In the electrochemical tests, PtCo/OMC exhibits a high ECSA value of 88.56 m 2 g −1 , and a ECSA retention of 77.5% after 5000 CV cycles. The results show that the PtCo/OMC catalyst is more active and more stable than the commercial-carbon-supported PtCo catalyst (PtCo/XC-72). Graphical abstract PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) on hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon (PtCo/OMC) are synthesized aiming to improve the activity and stability of the Pt-based catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Due to the natural mesoporous and graphite-carbon nanostructure of the OMC, the as-prepared PtCo/OMC catalyst is more active and more stable than the PtCo NPs on the commercial Vulcan @ XC-72 support (PtCo/XC-72), showing great potential in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital for the large-scale commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Alloying Pt with transition metals is a promising method to enhance the ORR catalytic activity, but the leaching of transition metals is inevitable, which deteriorates the stability. Here, we report the design of a P-doped PtCo electrocatalyst supported on carbon via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. On the one hand, the introduction of P into the carbon support by phytic acid can enhance the anchoring ability of the PtCo alloy and inhibit the migration of nanoparticles. On the other hand, the doping of P into the lattice of the PtCo alloy further tunes the electronic effect, which improves activity and stability simultaneously. The mass activity of as-prepared P5-PtCo/C at 0.9 V can reach 0.72 A mgPt–1, which is 4.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. After an accelerated durability test (ADT) of 30,000 potential cycles, the mass activity only decreased by 9.4%. Meanwhile, the average particle size of the catalyst slightly increased from 4.94 to 5.15 nm after the ADT of 70,000 potential cycles. This study provides a facile approach for constructing nonmetal-doped PtM catalysts with improved durability for the ORR.

The rational design and fabrication of 2D heterojuctions are proven a promising strategy for boosting the performance of electrocatalysts. Although 2D platinum diselenide (PtSe 2 ) exhibits catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the catalytic performance is still unsatisfactory due to its inert basal plane, wide bandgap, and poor electron transfer ability. Herein, a new strategy is reported to construct PtSe 2 /PtCo heterojunctions by partial selenization of PtCo alloy for high-efficiency HER electrocatalyst, which exhibits a low overpotential of 38 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 22 mV dec −1 , and a superior stability over 24 h and 1000 cycles. The outstanding HER activity of the catalyst arises from the strong electronic interactions between PtSe 2 and PtCo in the heterojunctions, which induce electron transferring from PtSe 2 to PtCo and the d-band center down shifting, and thus optimize the H * adsorption/desorption. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing highly efficient heterostructure electrocatalysts, which facilitates the applications of hydrogen energy conversion.
