The electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO 2 − ) contaminants to ammonia (NH 3 ) is a sustainable and energy-saving strategy for NH 3 synthesis. However, this multi-electron reduction process requires an efficient electrocatalyst to overcome the kinetic barrier. Herein, the Pt 2 Cu 1 nanooctahedrons are synthesized through a liquid-phase chemical reduction process. The synergistic effect of bimetallic Pt and Cu sites in the Pt 2 Cu 1 nanooctahedrons is indispensable for accelerated NO 2 − hydrogenation, originating from the strong hydrogen-atoms adsorption capacity at Pt site and the strong NO 2 − adsorption capacity at Cu site. Specifically, the introduction of Pt sites can accelerate the accumulation of hydrogenated species on the catalyst surface, which promotes the formation of NH 3 . In 0.5 m Na 2 SO 4 solution, the Pt 2 Cu 1 nanooctahedrons can reduce NO 2 − to NH 3 at a yield of 4.22 mg h −1 mg cat −1 and a Faraday efficiency of 95.5% at a potential of −0.14 V versus RHE. Meanwhile, the Pt 2 Cu 1 nanooctahedrons also exhibit excellent activity for the sulfion oxidation reaction (SEOR). Using Pt 2 Cu 1 nanooctahedrons as bifunctional electrocatalyst, a coupled electrolysis system combining the nitrite electrochemical reduction reaction (NO 2 − ERR) with the SEOR requires only 0.3 V total voltage, enabling energy-saving electrochemical NH 3 production and collective value-added recovery of nitrite and sulfion waste.

The construction of nanozyme-based electrochemical sensor with excellent analytical properties is urgently needed for non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing of glucose. In this work, we embed PtCu alloy nanoparticles on mesoporous carbon nanospheres (PtCu/MCNs) as nanozyme by strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) method combined with high-temperature reduction for glucose detection. Characterization results show that PtCu alloy nanoparticles with average diameter of 3.7 nm are homogeneously embedded on MCNs. The formation mechanism of PtCu/MCNs was put forward based on strong electrostatic interaction. PtCu/MCNs(1:1) shows the highest electrocatalytic activity for glucose oxidation compared with other PtCu/MCNs. PtCu/MCNs(1:1)-based sensor displays low detection limit (0.0005 μM), high sensitivity (574.1 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), wide linear range (1 μM–5 mM), high selectivity and anti-interference for glucose analysis. Moreover, the as-constructed sensor has excellent reusability and stability. The above superior properties could be attributed to the homodisperse and firm combination with MCNs of small PtCu alloy nanoparticles, and the cooperative effect of Pt with Cu. The PtCu/MCNs(1:1)-based sensor exhibits satisfactory properties for the detection of glucose in beverages, indicating the application prospects of PtCu/MCNs for glucose determination in real samples. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are a promising new energy source. However, the lack of high-performance and low-cost methanol oxidation electrocatalysts hinders their commercial application. Firstly, we successfully prepared NENU-5-derived molybdenum carbide material (Cu-MoC) via a co-precipitation and high-temperature carbonization method using a material composed of a copper-based metal–organic skeleton and a molybdenum-based carbide as the main body. Secondly, PtCu nano-alloy catalysts (Pt/Cu-MoC) were prepared using a unique, spontaneous single replacement reaction after metal–organic skeleton (MOF) carbonization. Through the synergistic effect between Pt and Cu and the strong interaction between Mo2C and PtCu, the electronic structure of the Pt is modified, the energy of the d-band center is reduced, electron exchange is accelerated, and catalytic activity is enhanced. Compared with a commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline environments, the Pt0.10/Cu-MoC catalyst has a better MOR catalytic activity (563.25 mA mgPt−1), which is 1.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (376.67 mA mgPt−1). The Pt0.10/Cu-MoC catalyst has an onset potential for CO oxidation that is 16 mV lower than that of commercial Pt/C, indicating better resistance to CO poisoning. Exploring carbon materials derived from MOFs with excellent junction support and using them as carriers to prepare Pt-based catalysts is a practical and feasible approach. It provides a way to develop new Pt-based catalysts that perform efficient MOR.

Bimetallic catalysts are promising materials for high-efficient conversion of lignocellulose to value-added chemicals, but synthetic methods with reasonable generality are still lacking. Herein, we report a novel method for synthesizing bimetallic catalyst PtCu@S-1(S-1, silicalite‑1) via zeolite encapsulation with the aid of protecting chelating ligands. PtCu@S-1 displays remarkable activity for the hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL), and its apparent turnover frequency (TOF) values reach up to 735 mmol FUR ·mmol Pt −1 ·h −1 and 88 mmol FUR ·mmol Cu −1 ·h −1 , which are ∼ 16 and ∼ 4 times higher than that of Pt@S-1 and Cu@S-1. Interestingly, we for the first time find that OO-trans FUR is a preferable adsorption configuration over OO-cis FUR on PtCu@S-1 due to the Pt sites coordinating with the carbon atom on the furan ring. More importantly, the adsorption ability of OO-trans FUR is stronger than that of OO-cis FUR, which increases the concentration of adsorbed species on PtCu@S-1 and accelerates the hydrogenation of FUR.

As a foodborne bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes (LM) can cause serious diseases and even death to weak people. 3-Hydroxy-2-butanone (3H-2B) has been proven to be a biomarker for exhalation of LM. Detection of 3H-2B is a fast and effective method for determining whether the food is infected. Herein, we present an excellent 3H-2B gas sensor based on bimetallic PtCu nanocrystal modified WO3 hollow spheres. The structure and morphology of the PtCu/WO3 were characterized, and their gas sensitivities were measured by a static testing method. The results showed that the sensor response of WO3 hollow spheres was enhanced by about 15 times after modification with bimetallic PtCu nanocrystal. The maximum response value of the PtCu/WO3 sensor to 10 ppm 3H-2B is as high as 221.2 at 110 °C. In addition, the PtCu/WO3 sensor also exhibited good selectivity to 3H-2B, fast response/recovery time (9 s/28 s), and low limit of detection (LOD < 0.5 ppm). Furthermore, the sensitivity mechanism was studied by monitoring the reaction products by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The excellent gas-sensing performance can be attributed to the synergy between PtCu and WO3, including the unique spillover effect of O2 on PtCu nanoparticles, the regulated depletion layer by p-type CuxO to n-type WO3, and their selective catalysis to 3H-2B. Hence, this work offers the rational design and synthesis of highly efficient sensitive materials for the detection of LM for food security.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an important biomarker for recognition of multiple diseases, the construction of nonenzymatic miniaturized sensors that capable to real-time monitor H 2 O 2 is tremendously significant. Here, we developed a high-performance microelectrode based on carbon fiber via a facile stepwise electrodeposition method, which could realize the high-sensitivity detection of the target H 2 O 2 . Carbon fiber was decorated by reduced graphene oxide supported PtCu bimetallic cluster nanocomposite (PtCu-rGO), in which rGO as catalyst support had a thin layer, which could realize the uniform loading of the other material. Meanwhile, in virtue of the low cost and synergistic effect, PtCu bimetallic cluster nanoparticles exhibited great potential in electrocatalytic of H 2 O 2 . The PtCu-rGO modified microelectrode displayed outstanding electrochemical behavior to H 2 O 2 sensing, including a broad working range of 5 μM-1270 μM (R 2 = 0.991), 1270 μM-3920 μM (R 2 = 0.998) with high sensitivity (15079.9 μA mM -1 cm −2 , 5–1270 μM; 10319.8 μA mM −1 cm −2 , 1270–3920 μM), an appreciable detection limit of 0.60 μM, as well as good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. Additionally, this easy-to-interpret sensor enabled real-time monitoring of H 2 O 2 generated from living cells and could further recognize cancer cells and normal cells. This newly proposed microsensor could be a promising tool for clinic diagnosis.

The method of transferring the immunoreaction from electrode surface to tube can greatly improve the analytical performance of electrochemical immunosensor. In this work, based on PtCu nanoprobe-mediated and iodide-catalyzed cascade reaction , an improved electrochemical immunosensor was elaborately designed for neuron-specific enolase (NSE) detection. PtCu nanoparticles combined with NSE antibody (Ab 2 ) were used as immunoprobes to trigger cascade reaction. With high catalytic activity towards the oxidation of iodide, PtCu nanoprobes catalyzed iodide to iodine in the presence of H 2 O 2 , leading to the decrease of iodide. Subsequently, as a bridge between the tube and iodide-responsive sensing interface, the residual iodide in tube was employed to catalyze the transition from thiol substances (RSH) to disulfide substances (RSSR) on electrode surface. On the basis of this property, thiol-modified DNA (DNA-SH) and 6-mercaptohexanol (MCH) reacted with H 2 O 2 and the residual iodide to form disulfide substances and detach from the electrode surface, causing the decrease of interface resistance in different degrees. Then square wave voltammetry (SWV) was applied for current signal of electrochemical sensing interface to achieve the quantitative detection of NSE. Under optimal conditions, this improved biosensor demonstrated excellent selectivity, stability and reproducibility with wide linear range from 0.0001 to 100 ng mL −1 and ultralow detection limit of 52.14 fg mL −1 for NSE, thus holding great promise for sensitive determination of tumor markers.

Rapid and accurate recognition of severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) would facilitate the optimal intervention. Currently, the diagnosis of severe CAP is commonly based on the criteria established by Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)/American Thoracic Society (ATS), which include 2 primary and 9 secondary criteria, making the process cumbersome and time-consuming. Here, a porous PtCu alloy-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) is designed for the extraction of plasma metabolic fingerprints (PMFs), coupling with machine learning for the diagnosis of severe CAP. The PtCu alloys with optimal particle size exhibit excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, and universality for metabolite detection, due to the porous structure, promising photoelectric effect, and improved melting surface structure. Further, the nanoplatform successfully records the PMFs within seconds, using only 0.5 µL native plasma. Machine learning of PMFs on 69 individuals produces a diagnostic model with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.832. Particularly, a three metabolic biomarker panel demonstrates enhanced diagnostic efficiency (AUC of 0.846), outperforming reported biomarkers (AUC of 0.560–0.770). Notably, the diagnosis can be completed in ≈35 min. The work affords a rapid and precise method for CAP management through metabolite analysis.

In this work, a facile one-pot solvothermal method is developed for fabricating hollow spherical PtCu alloy nanoparticles (with the size of 124 ± 16 nm) supported on reduced graphene oxide (PtCu/rGO), with the assistance of 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C 10 MIm]Br) as the structure-directing agent and capping agent. The influence of various experimental parameters on the morphology and structure of prepared PtCu/rGO hybrids is researched. Compared with the commercial Pt/C (10 wt%) and Pt/rGO, the as-prepared PtCu/rGO hybrid exhibits a larger electrochemical active surface area, higher electrocatalytic activity, and better tolerance for methanol oxidation in acidic media. We believe that the hollow spherical PtCu alloy supported on rGO will have great potential applications for direct methanol fuel cells.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a central nervous system demyelinating disease that typically causes severe visual impairment and paralysis, and the aquaporin-4 antibodies (AQP4-IgG) serve as its specific diagnostic marker. In patients presenting with typical NMOSD symptoms, a positive AQP4-IgG result is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. However, current clinical methods for detecting AQP4-IgG suffer from limited sensitivity, time-consuming procedures, and labor-intensive workflows, underscoring the urgent need for more efficient and reliable diagnostic approaches. To address these limitations, we report a novel electrochemical biosensor leveraging a hierarchical ZIF-67@PDA@PtCu nanozyme for ultrasensitive and rapid AQP4-IgG detection. ZIF-67@PDA@PtCu, a composite material consisting of a ZIF-67 core coated with polydopamine (PDA) and further decorated with PtCu nanoparticles, was utilized as a signal amplification component. The PtCu alloy nanoflowers demonstrated exceptional catalytic activity, which was further amplified by the sturdy ZIF-67 framework that enabled the integration of additional functional materials. In parallel, PDA enhanced the synergy between the unsaturated edge sites of the metal-organic framework and the outstanding catalytic properties of the PtCu alloy, thereby boosting the overall performance of the system. The integration of graphene oxide (GO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) enhanced electrical conductivity. This configuration enabled efficient electrochemical (EC) signal generation, facilitating the detection of AQP4-IgG with high stability, a broad detection range of 0.1–80 U mL −1 , and an impressively low detection limit of 0.05 U mL −1 . Our findings offer a novel approach for the early diagnosis of NMOSD and provide valuable insights into the detection of other antibody-dependent neuroimmune disorders.

The durability of platinum-group metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a critical determinant for the commercial viability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, we report a PtCu catalyst featured with a short-range ordered crystal structure and stabilized by a nitrogen-doped carbon shell. Notably, triphenylphosphine was strategically employed as a coordinating agent to regulate the uniformly growth of Pt and Cu complex. The N-doped carbon shell derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 ( ZIF-8) served a dual protective function: (1) physically isolating PtCu nanoparticles to mitigate agglomeration during thermal annealing, and (2) electrochemically stabilizing the catalyst against dissolution under accelerated durability test. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the short-range ordered structure in the PtCu kinetically impeded both Pt leaching and Cu segregation, which is beneficial for improving catalyst stability. Durability tests demonstrates only 15 % mass activity loss after 50 K electrochemical cycles, underscoring the efficacy of Pt-Cu interface design in addressing durability challenges for PEMFC cathodes.

Supported Pt catalysts suffer from low reaction selectivity (<65% at 100% conversion) in the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) because of their intrinsic over-oxidation tendencies. Herein, a strategy based on facilitating byproduct NOx reduction to N2 is demonstrated at CuOx/PtCu catalysts, aiming to tackle the low selectivity challenge. This PtCu alloy sample with a CuOx-rich surface displays an N2 selectivity of 95%, while its turnover frequencies are the highest among reported supported Pt-based catalysts. The enhanced reaction activities and N2 selectivities are primarily attributed to the Pt-Cuδ+ dual-site synergies at the CuOx/PtCu interface, in which dual sites exhibit distinct NH3 adsorption, activation, and dehydrogenation behaviors. The Olat assisted internal selective catalytic reduction mechanism at CuOx/PtCu with N2O22– as the central intermediates is proposed. Density functional theory calculation and temperature-programmed surface reaction measurements show that the N–O bond in N2O22– tends to break simultaneously with the assistance of Ov in CuOx followed by the easy transition from N2O22– to N2, which serve as the origin of the high selectivity.
