In this study, Mg Al layered double hydroxides were used as support precursors for the preparation of Pt Sn/Mg Al mixed metal oxides (Pt Sn/Mg Al) catalysts. The resultant catalysts were characterized by many techniques. The addition of Sn and high reduction temperature increased the Pt particle size. In the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane, the products were hydrogen and toluene. The introduction of Sn into Pt supported catalyst significantly improved the dehydrogenation activity. When Sn content was 0.5 wt % and Mg Al mixed metal oxides was used as a starting support, 90.5% conversion and 262.1 mmol/g met /min H 2 evolution rate were obtained at 300 °C. Moreover, these Pt Sn/Mg Al catalysts presented high anti-coking ability and good stability. No carbon deposition and conversion reduction were observed after the dehydrogenation reaction for 10 h.

Advancing clean energy technologies demands efficient and durable electrode catalysts for solid oxide cells (SOCs). Despite their exceptional catalytic properties, Pt-based materials face critical challenges in high-temperature applications owing to particle agglomeration and cost constraints. Here, we demonstrate a rational design strategy utilizing controlled in situ exsolution to create strongly anchored PtSn nanoalloys on oxygen-deficient PrBaMn 1.8 Pt 0.1 Sn 0.1 O 5+ δ (L-PBMPtSn) perovskite oxide. Through precise compositional engineering and structural control, we achieved a uniform dispersion of PtSn nanoparticles with unique socket-like interfaces that prevent agglomeration while maintaining high catalytic accessibility. The optimized electrode demonstrates remarkable bifunctional performance, achieving a current density of 1.6 A cm −2 at 1.8 V for CO 2 electrolysis and a maximum power density of 316 mW cm −2 for fuel cell operation at 800 °C. More significantly, the electrode exhibits exceptional stability with only 9.6% performance degradation over 100 h of operation, which is a substantial improvement over conventional electrodes. Our findings establish a new paradigm for designing high-performance SOC electrodes through the controlled exsolution of precious metal alloys, offering broader implications for catalyst design in high-temperature electrochemical systems. Hollow mesoporous nanoreactors with encaged functional nanoparticles are promising heterogeneous catalysts due to the advantages related to their hollow cavities. In this study, we employ metal ion-bound polymer micelles to synthesize PtSn alloy nanoparticle-encaged hollow mesoporous nanoreactors (PtSn@HMSNs), which contain ∼4 nm PtSn alloy NPs located in ∼13 nm hollow cavities and relatively large (∼9 nm) mesoporous channels in silica shells. Relative to monometallic Pt@HMSNs and supported Pt1Sn0.3/SiO2, Pt1Sn0.3@HMSNs exhibit greatly enhanced activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. At 1.0 MPa H2, 100 °C, and a furfural/Pt molar ratio of 1884:1, 97.5% of furfuryl alcohol yield was achieved in 5.0 h. The dramatically promoted catalytic performance of Pt1Sn0.3@HMSNs can be assigned to the confinement effect that the location of active NPs inside hollow cavities increases the collision rates between reactants and active NPs to promote catalytic activity, as well as the synergistic effect between Pt and Sn.

The development of thermally stable Pt-based catalysts with superior performance for propane dehydrogenation reactions remains a daunting challenge. In this study, a series of PtSn-Mg(Zn)AlO catalysts with different Zn and Pt contents were synthesized by the anion-exchange method for the propane dehydrogenation reaction. To investigate the influence of Zn on the reaction performance and the catalyst structure, the prepared catalysts were characterized with several analytical techniques, including XRD , TEM, HRTEM, H 2 -TPD and CO pulse chemisorption . A good propane conversion (initially higher than 55% and averaging 45.2% over a period of 2 h) and propene selectivity (higher than 99%) were obtained experimentally with PtSn-Mg(3Zn)AlO at 550 °C. The results demonstrated that Pt provided the active sites and that Zn was a promoter. The HRTEM and CO pulse chemisorption results indicated that the addition of Zn to the PtSn-MgAlO catalyst can stabilize the dispersion of metal particles and thus inhibit the sintering of Pt particles. Furthermore, the activities of the used catalysts were almost recovered through reaction-regeneration cycles with the burning-off of coke during five cycles.

Non-oxidative dehydrogenation technology shows great potential for producing high-value ethylene from shale gas. While Pt-based catalysts are currently central to this technology, suppressing carbon deposition remains a major challenge. This study developed a method utilizing dealuminated H β zeolite to stabilize PtSn species, achieving high activity (conversion: 34.9%), selectivity (>98%), and exceptional stability (4 h) in ethane dehydrogenation. The results demonstrate that the abundant silanol nests generated through dealumination effectively disperse PtSn species and prevent the sintering and agglomeration of platinum nanoparticles at high temperatures. The introduction of Sn not only enhances metal-support interactions but also facilitates electron transfer to Pt, thereby improving both the activity and stability of the catalyst. These findings provide deeper insights into the mechanistic role of zeolite-supported PtSn catalysts and establish a solid foundation for their industrial application.

Acetone serves as an important solvent and building block for the chemical industry, but the current industrial synthesis of acetone is generally accompanied by the energy-intensive and costly cumene process used for phenol production. Here we propose a sustainable route for acetone synthesis via propane wet reforming at a moderate temperature of 350 o C with the use of platinum-tin nanoparticles supported on γ-aluminium oxide (PtSn/γ-Al 2 O 3 ) as catalyst. We achieve an acetone productivity of 858.4 μmol/g with a selectivity of 57.8% among all carbon-based products and 99.3% among all liquid products. Detailed spectroscopic and controlled experiments reveal that the acetone is formed through a tandem catalytic process involving propene and isopropanol as intermediates. We also demonstrate facile ketone synthesis via wet reforming with the use of different alkanes ( e.g ., n-butane, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane) as substrates, proving the wide applicability of this strategy.

Regulating catalyst component is necessary to improve the catalytic efficiency of selective hydrogenation for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Here, we precisely construct PtSn bimetallic alloy catalysts with different Pt/Sn atomic ratios by a deposition–precipitation strategy. Importantly, a volcano-type relationship between the PtSn alloy component and catalytic activity is disclosed during the selective hydrogenation of HMF. Remarkably, the Pt3Sn1 alloy catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity compared to that of other samples, which could achieve 99.1% HMF conversion and 98.1% 2,5-bis (hydroxymethyl) furan selectivity. Moreover, the turnover frequency of Pt3Sn1 catalyst is 1952 h–1, which is about 6 times as high as that of pure Pt catalyst. Further studies reveal that the introduction of Sn could change the electronic structure of Pt atoms. Different Pt/Sn atomic ratios result in different extents of charge transfer from Sn to Pt. The Pt sites in Pt3Sn1 show moderate changes in electronic structure, which enhance the adsorption of the reactants and thus boost the intrinsic catalytic activity. This work provides a novel insight to optimize the component of catalysts in various reactions.

CO 2 -assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO 2 –ODHP) is a promising route to overcome the thermodynamic limitations of conventional propane dehydrogenation while enabling CO 2 utilization. However, PtSn/SiO 2 catalysts still suffer from rapid deactivation under CO 2 –ODHP conditions, the origin of which remains poorly understood. Herein, we systematically elucidate the deactivation mechanism of PtSn/SiO 2 catalysts and propose a silica encapsulation strategy to simultaneously suppress metal sintering and refractory coke formation. Although the introduction of CO 2 significantly reduces overall coke deposition, the PtSn/SiO 2 catalyst exhibits accelerated deactivation due to severe nanoparticle sintering and the accumulation of highly graphitized carbon species. By applying a controlled SiO 2 overcoating via a modified Stöber method, PtSn nanoparticles are effectively stabilized through the formation of robust Sn–O–Si anchoring linkages. An optimal silica loading of 5 wt% affords the Si(5)@PtSn/SiO 2 catalyst with a dramatically reduced deactivation rate constant (0.007 h⁻¹), while maintaining high propylene selectivity. Comprehensive TGA, Raman, and GC–MS analyses reveal that long-chain organosilane species (C 29 H 62 O 2 Si) constitute the key precursor for soluble coke species associated with silanol sites under CO 2 –ODHP conditions. The formation of these species is strongly correlated with the density of isolated surface silanol groups, which promote Si–O–C bond formation and permanently anchor coke precursors on the catalyst surface. The silica overcoating effectively modulates isolated silanol environment via enhanced hydroxyl condensation, thereby suppressing the generation of organosilane-derived coke nuclei. This work provides molecular-level insight into coke evolution on silica-supported Pt catalysts and demonstrates that balancing metal confinement with surface hydroxyl chemistry is critical for designing durable Pt-based catalysts for CO 2 -assisted propane dehydrogenation.

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH), an atom-economic reaction to produce high-value-added propylene and hydrogen with high efficiency, has recently attracted extensive attention. The severe deactivation of Pt-based catalysts through sintering and coking remains a major challenge in this high-temperature reaction. The introduction of Sn as a promoter has been widely applied to improve the stability and selectivity of the catalysts. However, the selectivity and stability of PtSn catalysts have been found to vary considerably with synthesis methods, and the role of Sn is still far from fully understanding. To gain in-depth insights into this issue, we synthesized a series of PtSn/SiO2 and SnPt/SiO2 catalysts by varying the deposition sequence and Pt:Sn ratios using atomic layer deposition with precise control. We found that PtSn/SiO2 catalysts fabricated by the deposition of SnOx first and then Pt, exhibited much better propylene selectivity and stability than the SnPt/SiO2 catalysts synthesized the other way around. We demonstrate that the presence of Sn species at the Pt-SiO2 interface is of essential importance for not only the stabilization of PtSn clusters against sintering under reaction conditions but also the promotion of charge transfers to Pt for high selectivity. Besides the above, the precise regulation of the Sn content is also pivotal for high performance, and the excess amount of Sn might generate additional acidic sites, which could decrease the propylene selectivity and lead to heavy coke formation. These findings provide deep insight into the design of highly selective and stable PDH catalysts.

This article proposes a general approach for the preparation of intermetallic nanoparticles of Pt3Sn, PtSn, PtSn2, and PtSn4, triggered by hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in conjunction with SnCl2. The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) tests demonstrate the improved specific activity of PtxSny intermetallic nanoparticles (PtxSny), due to the lower binding energy between carbon monoxide (CO) and PtxSny, the oxidation state of Sn, and the presence of Pt–Sn bonds on the surface. Strikingly, PtSn with an optimized Pt : Sn ratio of 1 : 1 holds superior EOR performance and stability to other PtxSny intermetallics. In addition, PtxSny intermetallic nanoparticles including PtSn, PtSn2, and even the most Sn-rich PtSn4 hold a higher specific current density than the commercial Pt/C after a long-term test, showing the enhanced stability for the EOR. Furthermore, this method was also successfully extended to the synthesis of other Sn-containing intermetallic nanoparticles, such as Ag3Sn and Cu6Sn5.

New synthetic method toward carbon supported catalysts with improved performance is of great importance in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Herein, onion-like nanocarbons (OLNCs) were fabricated by using cheap and readily available candle as the raw material. And a facile one-pot
and surfactant-free solvothermal approach was developed for the fabrication of PtSn nanoparticles supported on the OLNCs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed the highly crystalline PtSn nanoparticles with size of ~2–5 nm were evenly deposited on the surface of the OLNCs.
The obtained PtSn/OLNCs nanocomposites with Pt loading of about 10.1% exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward both methanol oxidation reactions (MOR) and ethylene glycol oxidation reactions (EGOR). The current density of PtSn/OLNCs is 2.6 and 2.7 times of the commercial 20 wt%
Pt/C toward the MOR and EGOR, respectively, suggesting the great application potential of the PtSn/OLNCs catalyst in DAFCs. The highly electrocatalytic activity of the PtSn/OLNCs may arise from the ultra-small size of the PtSn NPs as well as the large surface area and good electric conductivity
of the OLNCs support. This study not only provides an example of the cost-effective fabrication and application of the OLNCs based catalysts and also sheds a new light on the application of the PtSn/OLNCs catalyst in DAFS.

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a layered solid containing positively charged layers with negatively charged anions as an interchangeable interlayer. In this research, Mg(Al)O supports were synthesized with three different Mg:Al molar ratios, and bimetallic PtSn catalysts were loaded onto the supports via the anion exchange method. The properties of ethane dehydrogenation of the PtSn/Mg(Al)O catalysts were investigated. The results show that the structure and properties of the PtSn/Mg(Al)O catalysts were influenced by the Mg:Al molar ratio of the hydrotalcites, which consequently influenced the ethane dehydrogenation performance. When the Mg:Al ratio was 5:1, the ethane dehydrogenation performance was optimal, relative to the Mg:Al ratios of 2:1 and 10:1.Keywords:hydrotalcite;Mg:Al molar ratio;anion exchange method;ethane dehydrogenation
