A method for the determination of eight biogenic amines (BAs) in air-dried yak meat was established using ultra-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS) without derivatization. The conditions of UPLC–MS/MS, pH, hydration volume, extraction solvent, extraction salt, and clean-up sorbent were optimized according to the characteristics of the BAs and the sample matrix. The samples were extracted with acetonitrile, the extract was purified using primary secondary amine (PSA) and C 18 . The BAs were determined using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) within 5 min. The eight BAs exhibited good linearity, and the determination coefficient ( R 2 ) was greater than 0.997. The limits of detection (LODs) and the limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.40 to 2.50 μg/kg and from 1.25 to 7.50 μg/kg, respectively. The accuracy was between 80.3 % and 109.6 %, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) between 0.4–7.1 %. The method was applied in the detection of representative commercial samples of different processing techniques. In this method, the sample was pretreated free of derivatization and was simple, rapid, with minimum personal error, and high sensitivity. The method was assessed via GAPI and BAGI, verifying its environmental friendliness and applicability. It provides reliable methodological support for the determination of BAs in meat products.

To develop a clean-up material suitable for high-fat food matrices for detecting mycotoxins in yak ghee, an octadecyl-bonded hectorite (Hectorite@NHCO(CH 2 ) 17 CH 3 ) was synthesized through multi-step chemical reactions. A modified QuEChERS–HPLC–MS/MS method for detecting ten mycotoxins in sesame oil in yak ghee was established using Hectorite@NHCO(CH 2 ) 17 CH 3 as clean-up agent. It involved extracting mycotoxin contaminants using acidified acetonitrile and employing the Hectorite@NHCO(CH 2 ) 17 CH 3 to remove interfering substances from the extract. The purified samples were then analyzed using HPLC–MS/MS. Within a linear range of 1.0–500 μg/kg, there was a good linear relationship between the quantification ion peak area of the target analytes and the corresponding concentrations ( R 2 ≥ 0.9991). The limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.10 μg/kg to 18.62 μg/kg and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) ranged 0.32–62.07 μg/kg. The recoveries at low, medium and high concentrations (25, 100 and 500 μg/kg) ranged from 72.2% to 113.9%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) between 3.2% and 17.5%. The intra-day and inter-day precision met experimental requirements. The proposed method was characterized by a high accuracy and precision, and it could cater to the current demand for detecting ten mycotoxins in yak ghee. Graphical abstract

Sugars, organic acids, and lipids generally cause strong matrix effects, posing a challenge in the analysis of trace substances in honey. In this study, method involving a modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) protocol coupled with high–performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS) was developed for the analysis of multiresidue antibiotic in honey samples. Several adsorbents were selected and their abilities to reduce matrix interference and improve detection sensitivity were tested. Zinc oxide (ZnO) proved to be the most effective clean-up adsorbent for the purification of honey samples. Good linearity was found in the concentration range from limits of quantification (LOQs) to 20.0 ng mL –1 for all antibiotics, and for concentration up to 40.0 ng mL –1 for some types of antibiotics, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9991. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.24 to 0.68 μg kg –1 , and the LOQs were in the range of 0.80–2.27 μg kg –1 . The average recoveries ranged from 81.3 % to 99.0 % at three fortified levels with RSDs below 9.18 %. Twenty-eight honey samples obtained from local markets were analyzed using our optimized method, and lincomycin was detected in one sample.

Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is abused in animal husbandry and can be extensively metabolized in humans and animals. However, the actual monitoring mainly focuses on the parent compound but lacks attention to its metabolites. A method was developed and validated firstly for identification and determination of CPZ and its four major metabolites in animal-derived foods using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry in combination with QuEChERS preparation method. Satisfactory recoveries of analytes spiked in fish and pork samples ranged from 72 to 117 %, and limits of quantification were 2.0 and 1.0 μg kg −1 for fish and pork samples respectively. Moreover, through the hydrolysis experiments of CPZ, its hydrolysates, such as CPZ-sulfoxide, CPZ- N -oxide and CPZ-sulfoxide- N -oxide, were identified as potential risk compounds. The developed method has been successfully applied to the determination of CPZ and its metabolites in actual commercial samples, as well as to the screening of other CPZ-related risk compounds.

n-Octadecylamine was adopted as a cleanup agent to develop a novel solidification of a switchable solvent-based QuEChERS method. At higher temperatures (such as 55 °C), n-octadecylamine can melt into a liquid, allowing effective extraction of matrix interferences in acetonitrile solution (i.e., in dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction). At lower temperatures, n-octadecylamine carrying matrix interferences can rapidly solidify and easily separate from the acetonitrile solution. The results demonstrated that n-octadecylamine possessed a better ability to remove matrix interferences and reduce matrix effects than those of traditional solid-phase dispersive extraction cleanup agents of primary secondary amine and octadecyl bonded silica gel. By coupling it with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the proposed method was applied to the detection of 16 pesticides in cucumber. The recoveries were from 80.9 to 112.6% with relative standard deviations less than 12.9%. Satisfactory results were also obtained for the detection of 16 pesticides in pear, orange, apple, pepper, lettuce, and tomato.

Owing to the difficult degradation of phenolic compounds, the existence of phenolic compound residues accumulated through the food chain in crustaceans and their effects on human health have garnered considerable and more attention. However, the current detection methods for phenolic compounds are not only complex and time-consuming but can also detect fewer types of phenols simultaneously. Thus, a simple, high-throughput method without derivatization for the determination of 18 phenolic compounds in crustaceans was developed using a modified QuEChERS sample preparation method combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results indicated that the average recovery of the 18 phenolic compounds was 80.2–106.5% at three spiked levels, and the relative standard deviation was 2.6–12.4%. The limits of detection and quantitation were 0.001–0.014 and 0.003–0.042 mg/kg, respectively. Good linear relationships were observed for the phenolic compounds in their corresponding concentration ranges ( R 2 > 0.999). The applicability of the method was assessed by analyzing 16 actual shrimp samples, among which five samples contained residues ranging from 0.013 to 0.042 mg/kg. Moreover, the establishment of this method has important theoretical and practical significance for the determination and control of the residue levels of phenolic compounds in crustaceans. In addition, it can provide a reference for the development of similar detection standard methods in the future.

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) generated during the cooking of meats cause adverse effects on human health. The purpose of the current research was to develop a modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe) method using magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4-MWCNTs) as clean-up adsorbents for the rapid determination of HAAs in braised sauce beef. The significant parameters in extraction and clean-up processes were screened and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the LODs ranged from 3.0 ng/g to 4.2 ng/g. The recoveries (78.5–103.2%) and relative standard deviations RSDs (<4.6%) of five HAAs were obtained. These are in accordance with the validation criteria (recovery in the range of 70–120% with RSD less than 20%). Compared with conventional clean-up adsorbents (PSA or C18), Fe3O4-MWCNTs displayed equivalent or better matrix removal efficiency, while making the pretreatment process easier and more time-saving through magnetic separation. Less usage of adsorbent makes the method possess another advantage of being lower in cost per sample. The method developed was successfully applied to analyze real samples collected from local deli counters, demonstrating Fe3O4-MWCNTs could be considered as an effective alternative adsorbent with great potential in the QuEChERS process. Keywords:heterocyclic aromatic amines;QuEChERS;Fe3O4-MWCNTs;braised sauce beef

Abstract Pesticides are often involved in numerous acute and fatal poisonings. Patients’ blood samples may be sent to a toxicological laboratory for a poisoning diagnosis. This study proposes a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method for the determination of seven pesticides (malathion, methyl isofenphos, dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, phenthoste, p , p ′-DDD, p , p ′-DDE) in human blood based on a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) sample preparation method with Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the new adsorbing material. It proved that Fe 3 O 4 MNPs have excellent adsorbent function while purifying the complex blood sample and it is simple to be separated from the extract. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits of the proposed method for seven pesticides ranged from 0.011 to 0.163 µg mL −1 . Good linearity ( R value ≥0.9949) was achieved at concentration levels of 0.3–4.0 µg mL −1 , and acceptable method recoveries were found in the range of 70.0–111.8% at different concentrations, with the relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 10.5%. In short, the QuEChERS method with Fe 3 O 4 MNPs used for removing impurities improved the speed of sample pre-treatment and exhibited an enhanced performance in purifying. It can be applied for both forensic and clinical cases of accidental or suicidal poisoning with these pesticides. Graphical abstract

Pesticide pollution poses significant risks to human health, ecosystem, and biodiversity. Among agro-products, leafy vegetables exhibited particularly severe pesticide residue due to their short harvest periods and large leaf surfaces. However, investigations on multiresidues in high-risk leafy vegetables based on Chinese dietary habits were still limited. In this study, we developed a weak basic citrate-buffered QuEChERS method for the simultaneous extraction of 43 pesticides in bok choy, celery, Chinese chive and cilantro. Coupled with the high-throughput UPLC-MS/MS technique, this method achieved LODs ranging from 0.1–3.0 μg/kg and LOQs ranging from 0.4–10.0 μg/kg for the four matrices with high sensitivity. The recovery experiments on blank samples indicated that the method recoveries were in the range of 76.2 %–116.3 %, with RSDs less than 12.1 %. The developed method provided a highly accurate and precise technical approach for the analyses of high-risk leafy vegetables. Furthermore, 211 vegetables were collected from markets in Hangzhou from 2021 to 2023. The total detection frequency was 92.9 %, and high detection frequencies for pesticides such as acetamiprid, carbendazim, clothianidin, dimethomorph, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, propiconazole, pyraclostrobin, and thiamethoxam. The distribution of pesticides in different vegetables varied significantly due to factors such as application amount and plant absorption, providing valuable insights for implementing targeted detection and regulatory interventions. The mixed use of multiple pesticides in cilantro was observed. Combined use of pesticides such as tebuconazole, difenoconazole, and propiconazole (all belonged to sterol demethylation inhibitors), might lead to pathogen resistance. In summary, the frequently detected pesticides in the four leafy vegetables presented acceptable dietary risks, with hazard quotients ranging from 0.005 % to 3.634 %.

A modified QuEChERS method in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was first developed for the determination of fenbutatin oxide in six types of samples (soil, tobacco, rice, milk, pork liver, and pork). Fenbutatin oxide was extracted with acetonitrile containing 1% formic acid (v/v) and purified by dispersive solid-phase extraction using primary secondary amine (PSA) and quantitatively analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. In the range of 0.005–1 mg/kg, a good linear relationship exists between the concentration of fenbutatin oxide and the peak area, giving a coefficient of determination (R2) of >0.99. The recoveries of fenbutatin oxide at three spiked levels were 79.04–97.12% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 3.30–10.96%, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.007 mg/kg. In addition, the developed method is consistent with the reference method (R2 = 0.9896, n = 40). The method is demonstrated to be convenient and reliable for the routine monitoring of fenbutatin oxide in soil and plant- and animal-derived foods.

Developing an analysis of multi-pesticide residues for different herbal species-ready applications is a challenge. In the present work, a comprehensive analysis was proposed for rapid detection of 201 pesticides in various medicinal herbs. Samples were extracted and cleaned up with a high throughput pretreatment approach (modified QuEChERS), and then detected by gas chromatograph coupled to an electron impact ionization triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-EI-MS/MS). The clean-up procedure has been optimized using four types of representative medicinal herbs with different primary or secondary metabolites . Moreover, a mixture of analyte protectants (APs) was to improve the peak shape and intensity of some compounds. The performance of the method was validated according to the European Union SANTE/11813/2017 regulatory guidelines. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was determined to be ≤10 ng mL − 1 , and the recovery was between 70.0%–120.0%, with ≤20% RSD for the majority of pesticides. Sixty samples belonging to different species of medicinal herbs (such radix, flos, cortex, fructus, and seeds) were analyzed to evaluate the applicability of the optimized method. High frequency of chlorpyrifos was found in Citri reticulatae pericarpium, Crataegi fructus and Cuscutae semen samples.
