Thiram, a fungicide used to protect fruits and vegetables from fungal diseases, poses severe health risks due to its residues, so rapid and reliable detection methods are required. Herein, we developed a dual signal sensor based on copper-doped room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) embedded in a boric acid matrix (Cu-CDs@BA) for detecting thiram in fruits and vegetables. The rigid B 2 O 3 matrix, formed through high-temperature oxidation of boric acid, suppresses non-radiative transitions and oxygen quenching in the carbon dots, stabilizing RTP and enabling simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions. Copper ions within the Cu-CDs@BA acted as recognition sites by forming a Cu 2+ -thiram complex. The dual signal quenching mechanism involved photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and inner filter effect (IFE), which concurrently quenched fluorescence and phosphorescence. This dual signal output established an intrinsic self-calibration mechanism, significantly enhancing detection sensitivity by compensating for environmental changes. The sensor exhibits exceptional selectivity for thiram, rapid response (< 5 min), and simplified operation by eliminating the need for exogenous Cu 2+ supplementation. The spiked recovery experiments in real food matrices (banana, carrot) verified the practicality and reliability of the method. This work provided a novel strategy for multi-modal rapid detection of pesticide residues, addressing critical needs in food safety and environmental monitoring. Graphical

The rapid and precise detection and discrimination of structurally analogous analytes remain highly desirable yet challenging. In this work, a ratiometric room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) sensor array integrated with phosphorescence amplification and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven data processing was developed for the rapid discrimination and quantification of the mixture of oxolinic acid (OLA) and flumequine (FMQ). The sensor array leverages paper substrates to amplify the blue RTP signals of the OLA and FMQ and the green RTP signals of 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid through a confinement and thermal annealing mechanism. By coupling these amplified signals with automated AI processing and pattern recognition, quantification, and discrimination, the mixture of OLA and FMQ was realized, as low as 1.96 μM, within 10 min. In addition, the entire process could be executed by using a smartphone-based camera, eliminating the need for specialized instrumentation. The sensor array also demonstrated exceptional performance in practical samples, including environmental and food matrices, and paved the way for innovative sensor design.

This work has assembled ZnSe:Mn/ZnS quantum dots (QDs)-monoclonal anti-microcystin-Leucine Arginine (anti-MC-LR) antibody bioconjugates as a room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) probe using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyllaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide chemistry for detecting MC-LR. Once the specific interactions occurred between these MCs and their antibodies on the surface of ZnSe:Mn/ZnS QDs, the RTP of ZnSe:Mn/ZnS QDs was quenched with the increased concentration of MC-LR. Under the optimised conditions, the linear range of MC-LR was determined to be 0.9–8.8 nM. The linear relationship between ( P 0 – P )/ P 0 and concentration of MC-LR were observed with the regression equation ( P 0 – P )/ P 0 = 0.03908C + 0.0456 with the detection limit of 0.038 nM. The developed RTP immunoassay favoured environmental applications since the interference from autofluorescence and scattering light was greatly eliminated.

Based on the electron-transfer mechanism between the template and quantum dots (QDs), an optical sensor was structured. It is a phenol sensor, which has the room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) property of Mn-doped ZnS QDs and high selectivity of molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs). On the surface of the silane modified Mn-doped ZnS QDs, the phenol sensor was prepared by double cross-linker precipitation polymerization in the absence of any stabilizer and additive. Double cross-linkers, divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), make a great contribution to the imprinted polymerization with hydrogen-bonding interaction. Then, as a result of the functional monomer, methacrylic acid (MAA), a carboxylic acid was grafted onto the surface of ZnS QDs:Mn@MIPs. Under optimal conditions, the phenol determination experiment had a linear range of 5.0 to 55 μmol L−1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9984, and a high imprinting factor (IF) of 3.43. In addition, the prepared ZnS QDs:Mn@MIPs were successfully used to detect phenol in real water samples. Therefore, this work provided a highly selective and sensitive RTP probe for phenol determination.
