Efficient depolymerization of lignin through microwave-assisted Ru/C catalyst cooperated with metal chloride in methanol/formic acid media

Shao Lupeng,Wang Chao,Liu Yu,Wang Meng,Wang Luyan,Xu Feng

Lignin, an abundant aromatic biopolymer, has the potential to produce various biofuels and chemicals through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. Microwave-assisted efficient degradation of lignin in methanol/formic acid over Ru/C catalyst cooperated with metal chloride was investigated, concerning the effect of type and dosage of metal chloride, dosage of Ru/C, reaction temperature, and reaction time on depolymerized product yield and distribution. Results showed that 91.1 wt% yield of bio-oil including 13.4 wt% monomers was obtained under the optimum condition. Yields of guaiacol-type compounds and 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran were promoted in the presence of ZnCl2. Formic acid played two roles: (1) acid-catalyzed cleavage of linkages; (2) acted as an in situ hydrogen donor for hydrodeoxygenation in the presence of Ru/C. A possible mechanism for lignin degradation was proposed. This work will provide a beneficial approach for efficient depolymerization of lignin and controllable product distribution.

Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds and raw lignin-oil under a temperature-controlled phase-transfer catalysis

Zhi Yang,Bowen Luo,Riyang Shu,Zhipeng Tian,Yu Kang,Ying Chen

An effective binary catalyst by using tungstic acid (H 2 WO 4 ) and Ru/C was employed for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds and raw lignin-oil. H 2 WO 4 was presented as solid at ambient temperature, but it dissolved at high temperature above 100 °C and therefore functioned as an active homogeneous catalyst. This phenomenon resulted in a temperature-controlled phase-transfer behavior in the HDO of phenolic compounds. An efficient HDO performance and an exceptional reusability for guaiacol HDO were presented by this bifunctional catalyst, which can be reused more than 10 times with guaiacol conversion and cyclohexane selectivity over 90%. The comparison of traditional liquid organic and mineral acids, as well as solid acids, with H 2 WO 4 confirmed the outstanding catalytic performance of H 2 WO 4 and highlighted the advantages of H 2 WO 4 as a homogeneous catalyst. Besides guaiacol, other phenolic compounds including various monomers and dimers all exhibited good HDO results, with 100% conversion and cycloalkanes selectivity. Moreover, the raw lignin-oil can be efficiently deoxygenated under the catalysis of this bifunctional catalyst. 99.3% content of hydrocarbons was obtained in the upgraded lignin-oil, which was promising to be used as fuel directly. This catalytic system has great potential for the industrial application of lignin-oil upgrade.

Structural characterization and pyrolysis behavior of holocellulose obtained from lignin-first biorefinery

Yalun Hu,Isaac Nartey Oduro,Yong Huang,Yunming Fang

The structural characteristics and pyrolysis behaviors of two holocelluloses obtained from lignin-first biorefinery with Ru/C or Raney Ni as catalysts were studied in this paper. The infrared spectra of the remaining solid from the lignin-first biorefinery show that both lignin and a portion of hemicellulose were decomposed. Compared with Ru/C, Raney Ni was more effective for delignification and gave a holocellulose with higher degree of crystallinity, based on both the ratio of infrared bands (1372   cm −1 /2900   cm −1 ) and XRD analysis. The pyrolyses of holocelluloses were performed in fixed-bed and free-falling reactors, and the resulting char yields from both reactors were significantly higher than those of the parent biomass and commercial cellulose. This resulted from the cleavage of cellulose chain during the lignin-first biorefinery. Raney Ni related biorefinery cleaved cellulose chain to a higher degree.

Efficient synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in 1,4-dioxane/H2O mixture

Weizhen Xie,Huai Liu,Xing Tang,Xianhai Zeng,Yong Sun,Xixian Ke,Tianyuan Li,Huayu Fang,Lu Lin

The catalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a renewably sourced substitution for petroleum-derived terephthalic acid, at a high concentration is highly demanding but challenging. Herein, the efficient conversion of HMF (10–25 wt%) in 1,4-dioxane/H 2 O was achieved, and a desirable FDCA yield of 98% was obtained from HMF (10 wt%) over commercial Ru/C (2 Equiv. NaHCO 3 , 4 MPa O 2 , 3 h, and 140 ℃). In addition, a two-step cascade reaction was developed for FDCA production, in which FDCA was employed as the acid catalyst to promote the dehydration of fructose (10 wt%) to HMF, followed by oxidation in 1,4-dioxane/H 2 O to FDCA over Ru/C. As compared to pure water or 1,4-dioxane, the better stability of HMF in 1,4-dioxane/H 2 O with a weak alkaline environment and the enhancement of superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) in 1,4-dioxane/H 2 O could ensure high FDCA yield at high HMF concentration.

Efficient low-temperature hydrogenation of acetone on bimetallic Pt-Ru/C catalyst

Zhao Yang,Wenhan Chen,Jinbao Zheng,Zhiqing Yang,Nuowei Zhang,Chuan-Jian Zhong,Bing Hui Chen

Carbon supported Pt-Ru nano-alloy with multiple reactive sites exhibits unprecedentedly efficient performance in acetone hydrogenation at room temperature. Catalytic properties can be controllably regulated and optimized via performing the specific annealing treatment for the catalyst. The essential correlation between the variations in catalyst’s annealing conditions and the resultant variation in catalytic properties has been explored and discussed as a structure-function relationship. The combination of Pt and Ru sites exhibits enhanced catalytic activity compared with monometallic ones. Larger PtRu alloy particle size favors the rapid C O hydrogenation and the improvement of catalytic selectivity to isopropanol. Isopropyl ether generation is related to the Pt defect sites on the surface, which can be blocked though the catalyst’s oxidation treatment . The presence of surface metal-oxide species is beneficial to the performance enhancement, resulting from the synergetic behavior between metal-oxide sites and metallic sites on respectively activating the reactants. Moreover, 3-pentanone is used as a probe molecule to verify the structure-function relationship of catalytic low-temperature C O hydrogenation on PtRu/C.

Integration of Ru/C and base for reductive catalytic fractionation of triploid poplar

Yiwei Fan,Helong Li,Shihao Su,Jinlei Chen,Chunquan Liu,Shuizhong Wang,Xiangya Xu,Guoyong Song

Lignin, which is the most recalcitrant component of lignocellulosic biomass, is also the most abundant renewable aromatic resource. Herein, reductive treatment of triploid poplar sawdust by the integration of catalytic Ru/C and a base, which afforded high yields of phenolic monomers from the lignin component and a solid carbohydrate pulp, is reported. The introduction of Cs 2 CO 3 led to the generation of C2 side-chained phenols through the cleavage of C β –O and C β –C γ bonds in β–O–4 units in addition to C3 side-chained phenols; the relationship between C2 and C3 was dependent on the base dosage. The reaction conditions, including base species, temperature, time, and H 2 pressure, were optimized in terms of phenolic product distribution, delignification degree, and carbohydrate retention. The carbohydrate pulps generated from reductive catalytic fractionation in the presence of Cs 2 CO 3 were more amenable to enzymatic hydrolysis , indicating that this treatment of biomass constituted the fractionation of biomass components together with the breakdown of biomass recalcitrance.

Boosting the Performance Gain of Ru/C for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Via Surface Engineering

Xiaobing Bao,Yuzhuo Chen,Shanjun Mao,Yong Wang,Yong Yang,Yutong Gong

The surface properties of catalysts determine the intrinsic activity and adaptability. Ruthenium is regarded as a potential candidate to substitute platinum for water electrolysis due to the low cost and analogous electronic structures while it suffers from severe dissolution and stability problems. Herein, the modification of Ru/C with atomically dispersed cobalt atoms is achieved via a simple thermal doping method. The newly formed amorphous shell with Ru-Co sites on the Ru/C catalyst improved the hydrogen evolution reaction activity and stability significantly. Impressively, the obtained Co 1 Ru@Ru/CN x catalyst exhibited an overpotential as low as 30 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline medium, which is among the best HER catalysts reported so far. The oxygen oxophile Co prevents the fast oxidation and dissolution of Ru species, ensuring outstanding long-term durability up to 70 h. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru-Co coordination acts as a more active site for water dissociation than the Ru-Ru. Meanwhile, the “Ru-Co shell/Ru core” structures show high adaptability for the reaction conditions. This simple doping strategy offers prospects for scalable preparation of highly active electrocatalysts.

Superior Electrocatalysis Delivered by a Directional Electron Transfer Cascade in Hierarchical CoNi/Ru@C

Mingpu Jia,Ling Shen,Ge Tian,Susana I. Córdoba de Torresi,Mark D. Symes,Xiao-Yu Yang

Graphical The spatial junction in hierarchical confined CoNi/Ru@C has been synthesized, and its directional effect of electron transfer cascade can greatly promote the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in alkaline water/seawater. Exploiting directional electron transfer cascades could lead to high-performance electrocatalysts for processes such as the hydrogen evolution reaction, but realising such systems is difficult. Herein, a hierarchical confined material (CoNi/Ru@C) is presented, which provides a suitable spatial junction to enable directional electron transfer, giving superior hydrogen evolution in alkaline water/seawater.

One-Pot Transformation of Cellulose to Sugar Alcohols over Acidic Metal Phosphates Combined with Ru/C

Qi-Ying Liu,Yu-He Liao,Tie-Jun Wang,Chi-Liu Cai,Qi Zhang,Noritatsu Tsubaki,Long-Long Ma

ZrP with large surface, mesoporous volume, and size was prepared. Its catalytic performance was evaluated in hydrolytic hydrogenation of cellulose to sorbitol/mannitol combined with commercial Ru/C. A significantly enhanced sorbitol/mannitol yield was obtained as compared with that of the water-soluble acidic phosphates and buffer solution of potassium acid phthalate combined with the same Ru/C. The enhanced yield was attributed to the Lewis and Brönsted acid on ZrP surface improving the surface’s absorption and activation for cellulose and accelerating the rate-determined hydrolysis step. The maximal sorbitol/mannitol yield of 63% and 81% could be obtained by using microcrystalline and ball milling cellulose as the feedstock, respectively. The ZrP combined with Ru/C was adaptable to the high concentrated cellulose and obtained 5.8 wt % of sorbitol/mannitol concentration. The remarkably enhanced cellulose hydrolysis by ZrP sharply decreased the use of Ru/C, which is significant for the essential application.

Selective oxidation of 5-formyloxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid with Ru/C in water solution

Si Zhihao,Zhang Xin,Zuo Miao,Wang Tao,Sun Yong,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai,Lin Lu

2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a one of the most promising biomass-derived chemicals to substitute the non-renewable terephthalic acid as the monomer for producing polyethyleneterephthalate. At present, the oxidation of HMF is regarded as a prevalent way to prepare FDCA. Nevertheless, the isolation and storage of HMF is still a challenge. Herein, based on the higher stability of 5-formyloxymethylfurfural (FMF) than 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), we present an effective preparation route to prepare FDCA by substituting HMF with FMF as feedstock. A complete conversion of FMF and a 93.55% selectivity of FDCA were obtained in the mixed solvent of water and 1, 2-dioxane using Ru/C as catalyst and O 2 as oxidant. An improved process was developed for preparing FDCA using FMF as feedstock. The investigation of conversion pathway showed that FMF and HMF were simultaneously oxidized to 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) in a case of the existence of the reversible equilibrium between FMF and HMF. Then DFF was oxidized to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA). Subsequently, FFCA was oxidized to FDCA. In this process, the oxidation of FFCA to FDCA was determined as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, appropriate alkalinity favored the selectivity of FDCA and the conversion of FMF.

Preparation of Pt–Ru/C as an Oxygen-Reduction Electrocatalyst in Microbial Fuel Cells for Wastewater Treatment

Gaixiu Yang,Yongming Sun,Pengmei Lv,Feng Zhen,Xinyue Cao,Xiaojie Chen,Zhongming Wang,Zhenhong Yuan,Xiaoying Kong

Carbon-supported Pt–Ru alloys with a Pt/Ru ratio of 1:1 were prepared by NaBH4reduction at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicate that the as-prepared Pt–Ru nanoparticles had a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses demonstrate that alloying with Ru can decrease the 4f electron density of Pt, which results in a positive binding energy shift of 0.2 eV for the Pt 4f peaks. The catalytic properties of the synthesized Pt–Ru alloy catalysts were compared with those of commercial Pt/C catalysts by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The results show that the mass activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is enhanced by 2.3 times as much mass activity of Pt relative to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Single-chambered microbial fuel cell tests also confirm that the Pt–Ru alloys as cathode catalysts have better performance than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Keywords:Pt–Ru nanoparticles;oxygen reduction reaction;electrocatalyst;microbial fuel cell

Effect of Lignin Molecular Weight on Product Distribution: A Comparative Study Between Pyrolysis and Ru/C-Catalyzed Depolymerization

Jie Yang,Xinyu Jiao,Shihao Lv,Anjiang Gao,Shu Zhang,Yong Huang

Lignin, a complex and heterogeneous polymer, poses significant challenges for effective thermal valorization due to its broad molecular weight distribution and structural diversity. This study systematically compares the effect of lignin’s molecular weight on product distribution under pyrolysis and Ru/C-catalyzed depolymerization conditions. Fractionated lignin samples with distinct molecular weights were subjected to identical thermal and catalytic conversion pathways. Pyrolysis results indicate that, compared with low-molecular-weight (low-MW) lignin, high-molecular-weight (high-MW) lignin more readily generates phenolic compounds, with the relative content of guaiacol increasing by nearly twofold. In contrast, products derived from low-MW lignin contain a higher abundance of unsaturated structures, such as 4-allyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol, suggesting that side chain cleavage and rearrangement reactions are more pronounced. In contrast, Ru/C-catalyzed depolymerization exhibits a stronger molecular-weight-dependent selectivity, where low-MW lignin is more readily converted into carboxylic acids due to enhanced accessibility of terminal functional groups and reduced structural condensation. This comparative analysis demonstrates that lignin’s molecular weight plays a process-dependent role in governing product distribution, providing guidance for tailored lignin valorization strategies.
