Synergistic enhancement of fillers in the polymer matrix has emerged as a subject of scientific and industrial interest. A hybrid with the silica decorating on GO surface (SiO 2 @GO) was fabricated by an electrostatic self-assembly method, and its morphology, structure and composition were characterized. GO , silica, silica/GO mixture (SiO 2 -GO), and SiO 2 @GO were separately filled in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) to obtain composites. SBR/SiO 2 @GO (100/20) composite exhibited the best performance, and its tensile strength increased by 308% compared with that of SBR. This is due to SiO 2 @GO was uniformly embedded in the SBR matrix brought by the synergistic dispersion of silica and GO. SiO 2 @GO acted as the barrier in SBR composites , and increased the temperature at 50% weight loss for SBR/SiO 2 @GO (100/20) by 13.1 °C compared to SBR. Anchoring silica on GO surface is an effective way to develop various high-performance rubber composite materials with good potential in industrial applications.

Expandable graphite (EG) is widely used for flame retardancy of rubber. Nevertheless, with the increase in the amount of EG, the mechanical properties of rubber materials drop rapidly and they would not be conducive to the practical application of rubber products. In this study, piperazine pyrophosphate-boron nitride (PPAP-BN) was synthesised by in situ polymerization and combined with EG to prepare SBR composite material. The mixture of PPAP-BN/EG with a mass ratio of 1:4 at 25 phr (parts per hundreds rubber) resulted in a slow thermal degradation process of SBR and achieved the best flame-retardant effect: limiting oxygen index (LOI) increased from 19.5% to 28.5%, peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release rate (THR) decreased by 69.9% and 39.4%, respectively, and the peak smoke release rate (pSPR) and total smoke release rate (TSP) also decreased by 68.0% and 48.1%, respectively. This is mainly due to the synergistic effect of PAPP-BN and EG. The phosphorus-containing groups in PAPP-BN have a promoting effect on carbon formation. The piperazine structure can form a cross-linked carbon layer, whilst the layered structure of boron nitride increases the density of the carbon layer, effectively reducing the heat and smoke release of the material. In addition, the thermal conductivity of SBR composite materials increased by 78.8%. Graphical Abstract

A series of modified solution-polymerized styrene butadiene rubbers (M-S-SBRs) with different molar contents of polar groups were prepared through grafting 3-mercaptopropionic acid into solution-polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (S-SBR) chains. The molar contents of the polar groups in M-S-SBR were calculated using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. Thermodynamic analytical methods, including the surface energy of M-S-SBR and filler flocculation, show that the introduction of polar groups increases the work of adhesion of filler–rubber (Wrf), which is an indicator for the compatibility of the filler with rubber. The thermodynamic results can be further proved by TEM micrographs. Strain sweep experiments were carried out to investigate the temperature dependent nonlinear strain-dependence of elastic moduli, referred to as the Payne effect. The filler–filler network and interfacial strength were studied in terms of critical strain γc and activation energy Ea. Dynamic mechanical measurements show that a combination of higher energy dissipation in the low temperature range and higher elasticity in the high temperature region were achieved for M-S-SBR/Silica when compared with their non-modified counterpart.

The effects of various coupling agents on the characteristics and properties of a natural rubber (NR)/styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix and its adhesion to continuous basalt fiber (CBF) cords were studied. Four types of silane-based and two types of titanate-based coupling agents were added separately to the rubber matrix during the mixing process. The processability of the rubber compounds and the mechanical and tension fatigue properties of the vulcanizates were evaluated. The static and dynamic adhesion between the CBF cord/rubber matrices were investigated using the H pull-out test and an elastomer testing system, respectively. The results showed that the effects of the coupling agent were controlled by its chemical structure, and it was found that the addition of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane was the most effective for enhancing the interfacial fatigue properties, due to the combined improvements of the initial adhesion, interfacial stress states, and the fatigue property of the rubber matrix. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [AMIm]Cl@GNP/SBR composites were prepared by blending ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride salt([AMIm]Cl) modified graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The mechanical and thermal properties as well as the structure–activity relationship of the obtained composites based on the modified filler were investigated under the synergistic effect of non-covalent and covalent bonding. The experimental results indicated that the modification of GNP by [AMIm]Cl occurred under mild conditions. The dispersibility of [AMIm]Cl@GNP in SBR was enhanced by its participation in vulcanization and the synergistic effect of non-covalent and covalent cross-linking networks such as cation-π, π-π, and hydrogen bonds. This improvement led to an increase in the interfacial bond strength of the composites and a reduction in the interfacial thermal resistance. These effects resulted in both reinforcement and thermal conductivity properties. The tensile strength and elongation at break of [AMIm]Cl@GNP/SBR composites increased from 18.2 to 22.9 MPa and from 737.9% to 923.5%, respectively, when the modification ratio of [AMIm]Cl was 1% and the loading of [AMIm]Cl@GNP was only 4 phr (mass ratio). At the same time, the thermal conductivity in the vertical direction of the composites increased from 0.25 to 0.44 W/(m·K), and the thermal conductivity in the horizontal direction increased from 0.27 to 0.81 W/(m·K). Highlights Modified powder [AMIm]Cl@graphene nanoplatelets were prepared; [AMIm]Cl@graphene nanoplatelet/styrene-butadiene rubber blend was prepared; Mechanical properties of blends significantly improved over blank; The horizontal thermal conductivity of the blends increases obviously; The vertical thermal conductivity of the blends was improved.

In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated as Anammox and used as parent reactor. Then three SBRs seeded from the parent reactor were adopted for investigating the effect of CuO, ZnO and TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) on nitrogen removal, microbial activity and microbial communities of Anammox. The bioactivities of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) after different exposure period were detected by batch experiments. Results showed that NPs performed immediate and durable toxicity on Anammox. The nitrogen removal efficiency decreased to 2.3%, 2.9% and 14.0% from 71%, the Anammox rate decreased to 0.13, 0.16 and 0.75 from 2.76 mg h −1 g −1 VSS, and the relative abundance of AAOB decreased to 2.57%, 2.78% and 2.61% from 7.99%, respectively. CuO and ZnO NPs performed similar effect, while CuO NPs led to the most severe toxicity and lowest accumulative effect. TiO 2 NPs showed the lowest toxicity but most durable suppression on Anammox process.
