The effect of ethylene glycol bis(propionitrile) ether(DENE) as a novel electrolyte additive on the electrochemical performance of a graphite anode was studied in this paper. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry(CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were used to investigate the SEI film and the cycle performance of graphite anode. The initial charge capacities of the graphite electrode in the electrolytes without and with 1% DENE were 319 mAhg −1 and 349 mAhg −1 , respectively. After 60 cycles, the charge capacities without and with 1% DENE were 315 mAhg -1 and 350 mAhg -1 , respectively. and the capacity retention rates were 95.8% and 98.1%, respectively. DENE promoted the formation of a thin and uniform SEI layer and improved the stability of the electrode. The addition of DENE effectively improved the electrochemical performance of graphite anodes.

Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are enjoying a renaissance due to the high energy densities. However, they still suffer from the problem of uncontrollable Li dendrite and pulverization caused by continuous cracking of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers. To address these issues, developing spontaneously built robust polymer-reinforced SEI layers during electrochemical conditioning can be a simple yet effective solution. Herein, a robust homopolymer of cyclic carbonate urethane methacrylate is presented as the polymer matrix through an in situ polymerization method, in which cyclic carbonate units can participate in building a stable polymer-integrated SEI layer during cycling. The as-investigated gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) assembled LiCoO 2 /Li metal batteries exhibit a fantastic cyclability with a capacity retention of 92% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C (1 C = 180 mAh g −1 ), evidently exceeding that of the counterpart using liquid electrolytes. It is noted that the anionic ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic carbonate units on the polymer close to the Li metal anodes enables a mechanically reinforced SEI layer, thus rendering excellent compatibility with Li anodes. The in situ formed polymer-reinforced SEI layers afford a splendid strategy for developing high voltage resistant GPEs compatible with Li metal anodes toward high energy LMBs.

Silicon–carbon (Si/C) anodes have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional graphite anodes for high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), owing to their higher specific capacity than graphite and enhanced cycling stability over pure silicon. However, the unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) due to large volume changes during cycling is still a key bottleneck limiting their electrochemical performance. To address this critical limitation, the present study introduces wheat gluten (WG), a biomass-derived material from wheat, as a low-cost and sustainable binder for Si/C anodes. WG, rich in organic functional groups such as −COOH and −NH2, exhibits unique coordination capabilities with Li+. When employed as a binder, WG effectively induces the formation of Li+ solvated structures that weaken solvent coordination at the electrode surface/interface. This behavior facilitates the preferential growth of a LiF-rich SEI, thereby enhancing interfacial stability and mitigating capacity fade. Consequently, Si/C anodes employing WG binder (Si/C-WG) demonstrate remarkable cycling performance, delivering 95.9% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g–1, far surpassing that of conventional poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) binder, which retains only 59.5%. This study presents a novel strategy for designing functional binders optimized for Si/C anodes, offering critical insights to advance the development of high-performance anode materials in LIBs.

The urgent need for high-energy–density rechargeable batteries is driving lithium (Li) metal as a promising anode material. However, the conventional solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on lithium metal suffers from elevated interfacial impedance, poor mechanical properties, and non-uniform Li + flux. Previously, LiF has been proven to be an effective component of the SEI protecting lithium metal. However, this is a rarely reported application of LiCl and LiBr in SEI. Herein, we design SEI containing lithium halide in different ratios (LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 , LiF 0.33 Cl 0.33 Br 0.33 , LiCl, LiBr) to investigate the action laws of lithium halide in SEI. It has been shown that the performance of SEI containing lithium halide against lithium anode increases with the LiF content in the SEI. The higher the proportion of LiF in SEI, the better the cycle life and stability of Li-Li symmetric cells, and the higher the initial capacity and the capacity retention of LFP-Li full cells. The symmetric cell with LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 @Li has the smallest average polarization voltage (about ± 30 mV) and long cycle life of up to 1000 h. LiFePO 4 ||LiF 0.8 Cl 0.1 Br 0.1 @Li cells have the highest initial capacity (127.4 mAh/g), and still had 83.6 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2C.

Silicon anodes hold great promise for high-energy lithium-ion batteries but suffer from severe volume expansion and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. To address these challenges, this study develops a thermally crosslinked dual-polymer (KH550/sodium alginate) coating strategy. The 350 °C-pyrolyzed coating forms a semi-carbonized artificial SEI on the surface of Si particles that effectively suppresses side reactions and accommodates volume changes. Comparing with uncarbonized polymer coating, the denser semi-carbonized one demonstrates its unique effect in matching Li⁺ diffusion kinetics between the interface and bulk silicon, retaining the structural integrity of Si particles during lithiation. The resulting Si anode exhibits minimal volume expansion (8%), 82.5% initial Coulombic efficiency, 948 mAh g⁻¹ after 500 cycles at 2 A g⁻¹, thereby developing a new gate on enhancing electrochemical performance by pre-constructing semi-carbonized polymer coating around Si particles.

Constructing an artificial SEI on a hard carbon surface effectively enhances initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycling stability. A polymer electrolyte binder containing sodium ions (SPEB), consisting of PAAS and PEO , is designed using a straightforward method. A high ion conductivity artificial SEI is constructed on a pomelo peel-derived hard carbon (PHC) surface through esterification and hydrogen bonding . In hard carbon anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), SPEB plays a crucial role by facilitating pre-sodiation in PHC, enhancing ion conductivity, and guiding the construction of a NaF-rich, ultra-thin, and stable SEI. The synthesized PHC possesses an outstanding reversible specific capacity of 375.13 mAh·g −1 , a superior ICE of 90.94 %, good rate capability, and excellent cycle stability. After 400 cycles at 0.9 A·g −1 , it retains 152.52 mAh·g −1 with almost no decay. Meanwhile, SPEB demonstrates an exciting performance in other hard carbons and helps its commercialization application in SIBs.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film is vital to the plating/stripping behavior of lithium metal, while the formation mechanism has not been explained clearly. Here, the formation process of the SEI film is first classified into chemical and electrochemical degradation routes by introducing a LiZn alloy, a chemically inert but electrochemically reactive interphase, as a distinguished research substrate. In a carbonate electrolyte, it is found that the common inorganic matters (such as Li2O and LiF) mainly originate from the chemical degradation of the electrolyte; meanwhile, the electrochemical degradation mainly generates organic species such as C-OR and COOR. Based on this understanding, the SEI film can be further accurately regulated, and a heterojunction-type SEI film with a well-defined composition and structure is constructed. This offers us a new perspective to understand and regulate the formation of the SEI film for applicable lithium metal batteries.

Amorphous structures have been widely applied in zinc anode protection, due to their optimized ion diffusion paths and abundant dangling bonds. However, the amorphization process significantly impairs structural stability which reduces the cycling performance. To address this challenge, researchers incorporated a silicon-based coupling agent into the c-AS-UiO system, achieving performance optimization by regulating the amorphous structure. The reconstructed material forms a flexible Zr Si O network, which can form a strong bonding interaction with the zinc substrate. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm that this unique network structure can effectively improve the mechanical properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), thereby adapting to the volume fluctuations of the anode during battery cycling. Meanwhile, the introduction of silicon also stabilizes the system by dispersing electrons, and mitigates the tip effect caused by ion aggregation. Ultimately, under the protection of the stable SEI layer, uniform deposition of zinc ions is achieved, fundamentally suppressing the problem of dendrite growth. Experimental results show that the symmetric cell composed of the zinc anode modified with c-AS-UiO (denoted as c-AS-UiO@Zn) achieves a cycle life of over 3300 h under 15 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the full cell assembled by pairing this modified anode with MnO 2 cathode still maintains excellent cycling stability after 2000 cycles. This study provides a new direction for the application of amorphous materials in zinc anode protection, and also offers insights for achieving anode stability through the optimization of amorphous structures.

Black phosphorus (BP) has been highly regarded as a favourable candidate for fast-charging anode applications owing to its high theoretical capacity and advantageous charge–discharge platform. However, BP faces challenges related to compromised electrochemical performance resulting from an unstable solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) and substantial volumetric expansion. This study proposes the engineering of an inorganic-dense SEI on the surface of BP-C through the strategic incorporation of lithium fluoride (LiF). The presence of LiF in the system preferentially promotes LiPF 6 adsorption from the electrolyte, facilitating the in-situ formation of a lithium-enriched inorganic SEI film on the BP-C particulate surfaces. This strategic formation effectively mitigates subsequent electrolytic decomposition, accommodates volumetric expansion, and substantially improves the rate capability and cycling stability of the system. Consequently, the BP-LiF-C electrode demonstrates high initial coulombic efficiency of 86.8 % and maintains a steady capacity of 926.1 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 . Moreover, when paired with a LiFePO 4 cathode, the full cell exhibits long cycling stability, retaining 98.6 % of its capacity after 500 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 , and performs at high rate. Therefore, utilising LiF to modulate the interfacial architecture of BP-based electrode composites provide notable guidance to enhance energy storage systems.

Sodium metal has attracted considerable interest as an anode for next-generation high-energy-density sodium-metal batteries, owing to its superior specific capacity, low electrochemical potential, and economic viability. Despite the advantages, sodium-metal anodes encounter critical challenges, such as side reactions and dendrite growth, which diminish Coulombic efficiency and compromise long-term cycling performance. In this work, a multifunctional artificial NaF-Zn hybrid interfacial layer is in situ formed on the sodium metal surface. Both NaF and Zn exhibit strong binding affinity for PF 6 − , which facilitates Na + desolvation and accelerates the formation of a homogeneous and NaF-rich solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). The resulting homogeneous and mechanically stable SEI enhances Na ion transport, reduced the side reactions and suppresses the dendrite formation. Consequently, the symmetric cells based on NaF-Zn modified Na operate stably for 1900 h at a high current density of 3 mAh cm −2 , while the full cell with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode maintains stability for 8000 cycles at a high rate of 20C with a capacity retention of 75%. Moreover, the full cell demonstrated outstanding stability even under extreme working conditions, including low temperatures of −20 °C, high cathode loading, and reduced N/P ratios.

Controlling the composition and microstructure of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is critical to improving the cycling stability of the high-energy-density lithium–metal electrode. It is a quite tricky task to control the properties of the SEI layer which is conventionally formed by the chemical reactions between a Li metal and the additives. Herein, we develop a new route to synthesize a lithium-compatible sol of the sulfide electrolyte Li3PS4, so that a Li3PS4 artificial SEI layer with a controllable nanoscale thickness and high phase purity can be prepared by spin-coating. The layer stabilizes the lithium/electrolyte interface by homogenizing the Li-ion flux, preventing the parasitic reactions, and alleviating concentration polarization. Consequently, a symmetrical cell with the Li3PS4-modified lithium electrodes can achieve stable lithium plating/stripping for 800 h at a current density of 1 mA cm–2. The Li–S batteries assembled with the Li3PS4-protected Li anodes show better capacity retention than their bare Li counterparts, whose average decay rate from the 240th cycle to the 800th cycle is only 0.004%/cycle. In addition, the Li3PS4 layer improves the rate capacity of the batteries, significantly enhancing the capacity from 175 to 682 mA h g–1 at a 2 C rate. The spin-coated Li3PS4 artificial SEI layer provides a new strategy to develop high-performance Li metal batteries.

To achieve high ionic conductivity for solid electrolyte, an artificial Li-rich interface layer of about 60 nm thick has been constructed in polymer-based poly(ethylene oxide)-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide composite solid electrolyte (briefly noted as PEO m ) by adding Li-based alloys. As revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, an artificial interface layer of amorphous feature is created around the Li-based alloy particles with the gradient distribution of Li across it. Electrochemical analysis and theoretical modeling demonstrate that the interface layer provides fast ion transport path and plays a key role in achieving high and stable ionic conductivity for PEO m -Li 21 Si 5 composite solid electrolyte. The PEO m -5%Li 21 Si 5 composite electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 3.9 × 10 –5 S cm −1 at 30 ° C and 5.6 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 45 ° C. The LiFePO 4 | PEO m -5%Li 21 Si 5 | Li all-solid-state batteries could maintain a stable capacity of 129.2 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C and 30 ° C after 100 cycles, and 111.3 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and 45 ° C, demonstrating excellent cycling stability and high-rate capability.
