Blending metal-organic frameworks to optimize proton transport pathways is one of the strategies to improve the proton conductivity of proton exchange membranes (PEM). In this paper, amino-sulfonic acid bifunctionalized UiO-66 (NUS) by one-pot solvothermal method is synthesized, and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone)/NUS-X (SPEEK/NUS-X) hybrid membranes are prepared by mixing NUS into SPEEK matrix. Among them, SPEEK/NUS-1.5 has the highest proton conductivity (177.76 mS cm −1 , 70 °C, 100% RH) and maintain a 300 h conductivity stability. And its maximum power density was 423.2 mW cm −2 , exceeding pristine SPEEK by 2.20 times. Compare to the pristine SPEEK membrane, it is interesting to note the disappearance of SAXS scattering peak of SPEEK/NUS-1.5. It is speculated that this phenomenon was caused by the generation of acid-base pairs between –NH 2 and –SO 3 H, and the improved hydrogen bonding network provides more proton transport channels and immobilizes sulfonic acid groups for improved durability. The resultant proton conductivity is stable over 300 h with about 90% retention.

Based on CsH5(PO4)2, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), and phosphosilicate sol, proton-conducting CsH5(PO4)2/phosphosilicate/SPEEK composite electrolyte membranes have been prepared by a sol–gel method followed by mechanical ballmilling. The chemical structures, morphologies, thermal performances, stability, and proton conductivities of the composite electrolyte membranes were investigated. After incorporating the SPEEK polymer, these composite membranes exhibited adequate flexibility and mechanical performance; despite inorganic content of up to 80 wt%, a tensile strength of 6.2 MPa was maintained. Specifically, the composite electrolyte membrane displays a high proton conductivity of 14.6 mS cm−1 at 250°C under 47% H2O/N2 atmosphere. A fuel cell equipped with the composite electrolyte membrane showed a stable output voltage over the continuous measurement of 50 h under a constant output current density of 40 mA cm−2.

This study aimed to develop a novel artificial joint prosthesis material with osteogenic properties. Deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) was immobilized on the porous surface of sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) through polydopamine (PDA), resulting in a novel material designated as DFO-PDA@SPEEK (Abbrev. DFO-PS). DFO-PS induced macrophage M2 phenotype polarization, reduced inflammatory factor expression, promoted osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and enhanced implant osseointegration and osteogenic capacity. In vitro evaluation demonstrated that DFO-PS significantly modulated immune and inflammatory responses, promoted angiogenesis, and enhanced osteogenic differentiation. In the rat model with femoral bone defect, in comparison to the control group, the DFO-PS group exhibited a 1.22-fold increase in trabecular thickness and a 1.51-fold enhancement in maximum pull-out force. This work demonstrates that DFO-PS represents a promising strategy for constructing multifunctional implants with biomineralization and immunomodulation properties for bone joint replacement.

Three types of amino acid salts (sodium lysine, sodium arginine, sodium histidine) were introduced into SPEEK polymer matrix to fabricate a series of SPEEK/amino acid salt membranes for CO2 separation. The membranes could efficiently separate CO2 from a CO2/CH4 mixture due to the simultaneous improvement of CO2 permeability and separation performance. Firstly, the amino acid salt contained a larger number of amino groups (–NH2), which could reversibly react with CO2, improving the CO2 molecules transfer performance. Secondly, the ether oxygen structure (–O–) in the polymer chain and the carboxyl groups (–COO−) in the amino acid salt had an excellent affinity for CO2, enhancing the solubility selectivity. Thirdly, the introduction of amino acid salt increased the water uptake, and water was favored over CO2 dissolution; this was also good for the increase of solubility selectivity. Among the three types of amino acid salts, the membrane doped with 20 wt% sodium lysine (SPEEK/LLS-20) showed the highest CO2 permeability of 295.6 barrer and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 71.8 at 2 bar and room temperature, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound line.

High concentrations of redox substances in the solution may cause severe electrode potential drift, resulting in the inaccuracy of in situ measurements . Sulfide anion , a highly reductive substance, is the killer of all metal oxide electrodes because of its small size and strong surface activity. We first proposed to use SPEEK (SP) with silica-stabilized imidazole-type ionic liquid (ImIL) to fabricate a composite film (SP/SiO x /ImIL) to achieve a high anti-interference ability for metal electrodes. The composite film was especially designed to address the interference caused by sulfide anions and other small-sized anions ( i.e., I − , F − and ascorbic acid). The reduced proton conductivity was restored by introducing ImIL into SPEEK matrix. Open circuit potential tests showed that the potential of the SP/SiO x /ImIL modified IrO x electrode fluctuated within 0.3 mV in 30 min continuous test at a concentration of 10 −3 M Na 2 S, exhibiting good stability in moderately high sulfide solution. It also exhibited fast response and good reversibility. In addition, no potential drift was measured under other anions interferences. XPS survey verified that the Ir 4+ /Ir 3+ ratio of the IrO x electrode did not change before and after application in sulfide-containing solution, indicating that the SP/SiO x /ImIL composite film has good anion isolation capacity.

In this article, a novel proton exchange membrane , shown both high proton conductivity and excellent stability, has been demonstrated, which is simply fabricated by embedding poly(vinylidene fluoride) grafted poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA-g-PVDF) nanofibers in sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) matrix. The novel nanofiber-enhanced membrane (NEM) presents an utlra-high proton conductivity of 720.6 mS/cm, which is 2.4 times higher than the unmodified SPEEK membrane. The long-range continuous proton transport channel built at the interface between the matrix and nanofibers, known as acid-condensed layer, has been directly confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements for the first time, which illustrates the result. Futhermore, the NEMs are always provided with the excellent dimensional, thermal, and mechanical stability , which benefit from the sturdy three-dimensional network of PSSA-g-PVDF nanofibers. In virtue of the high conductivity and stability, the NEMs have proved to be very promising in fuel cells.

How to solve the crossover of vanadium ions through ion exchange membrane is a key issue in vanadium redox flow battery (VRB), especially for ultra-thin membranes used for VRB to obtain a lower cell resistance. Herein, an ultra-thin (~ 30 μm) PTFE/SPEEK [polytetrafluoroethylene/sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone), P/S] membrane is successfully prepared and modified by using layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique with polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyanion poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS). P/S membranes are alternatively immersed in positively and negatively charged polyelectrolyte to form 2 to 8 bilayers onto its surface. Consequently, a series of P/S-[PDDA/PSS]
n
( n is the number of multilayers) membranes are fabricated. Both the physicochemical properties and VRB performances of the P/S-[PDDA/PSS]
n
membranes are then investigated in detail. Results show that the ion selectivity of the P/S-[PDDA/PSS]
n
membranes is much higher than that of pristine P/S membrane, especially for P/S-[PDDA/PSS] 6 membrane. As a result, the VRB with the P/S-[PDDA/PSS] 6 membrane exhibits the highest coulombic efficiency (CE) of 96.5% at 80 mA cm −2 , the highest voltage efficiency of 94.7% at 40 mA cm −2 and the highest energy efficiency of 87.7% at both 40 and 50 mA cm −2 , respectively. In addition, 80 times charge–discharge test proves that the P/S-[PDDA/PSS] 6 membrane possesses high stability and no obvious CE decay after running. All the results show that the LBL technique is an effective way to prepare ultra-thin membrane with high ion selectivity for VRB application.

In this work we presented a general strategy for the fabrication of membranes with well-defined ions transport channels through solvent-responsive layer-by-layer assembly (SR-LBL). Multilayered poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) complexes were first introduced on the inner pore wall and the surface of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone)/poly (ether sulfone) (PES/SPEEK) nanofiltration membranes to form ions transport channels with tuned radius. This type of membranes are highly efficient for the separators of batteries especially vanadium flow batteries (VFBs): the VFBs assembled with prepared membranes exhibit an outstanding performance in a wide current density range, which is much higher than that assembled with commercial Nafion 115 membranes. This idea could inspire the development of membranes for other flow battery systems, as well as create further progress in similar areas such as fuel cells, electro-dialysis, chlor-alkali cells, water electrolysis and so on.

Membrane-based dehumidification offers an energy-efficient alternative to conventional methods but requires membranes that concurrently exhibit high water vapor permeability and robust mechanical strength, a combination that is challenging to achieve. While sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) provides excellent hydrophilicity for vapor transport, its high swelling tendency often compromises mechanical integrity. This work aims to optimize this critical performance–strength balance through microstructure engineering of SPEEK/polyethersulfone (PES) blend membranes fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). By modulating the coagulation bath and the SPEEK/PES blending ratio, precise control over membrane morphology is demonstrated, enabling a tailored transition from finger-like to sponge-like pore structures. This structural evolution directly governs the key membrane properties: reducing the SPEEK content enhances mechanical strength but diminishes hydrophilicity and dehumidification efficiency. The optimal dehumidification performance of the 4:6 SPEEK/PES blend arises from the synergistic effect of enhanced hydrophilicity and optimized asymmetric microstructure, where morphological regulation via skin layer thinning plays a dominant role in mass transfer enhancement. The findings establish a rational design strategy for polymer blend membranes, demonstrating that synergistic microstructural control enables effective optimization of the performance–strength balance within the inherent trade-off framework for air dehumidification applications.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is widely used in orthopedics due to its good mechanical properties and biocompatibility; however, its bioactivity and osseointegration ability are poor. In this article, PEEK materials were dual-modified by surface sulfonation treatment and the loading of active hydrogels (phosphorylated gelatin/chitosan/hydroxyapatite) to improve their bioactivity and osseointegration. Initially, a microstimulated sulfonation process was employed to construct an optimized porous structure on the PEEK surface, with a porosity of 54.63% and an average pore size of 3.38 μm, which significantly improved hydrophilicity and promoted the adhesion and growth of osteoblasts. Subsequently, utilizing the adhesive properties of polydopamine (PDA), the phosphorylated gelatin/chitosan/hydroxyapatite composite hydrogel (PG/CS/HA hydrogel) was loaded onto the surface of SPEEK, resulting in the construction of a highly active and strongly osteogenic SPEEK-PG/CS/HA material. The results showed that the dual modification of the porous sulfonated structure and bioactive hydrogel significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, mineralization ability, and osseointegration of the PEEK. Specifically, the cell proliferation capacity increased by 32% after 7 days of coculture on MC3T3-E1 cells; the alizarin red staining rate after 14 days of coculture reached 72.49%, representing a 111% improvement; and the expression levels of osteogenic genes ALP, OPN, and RUNX2 increased by 132%, 151%, and 131%, respectively, demonstrating excellent in vitro osteogenic induction potential. The SPEEK-PG/CS/HA material effectively solves the problem of bioinertia in the PEEK material, offering a novel modification strategy for orthopedic implants.

Membrane dehumidification provides an energy-efficient alternative to conventional methods (e.g., condensation and adsorption), addressing high energy consumption and operational limitations of traditional technologies for selective water vapor removal. This study engineered sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes with precisely tunable sulfonation degrees (DS = 45%-75%) by optimizing reaction time, temperature, and sulfuric acid concentration. Systematic evaluation revealed that increasing DS significantly enhances membrane hydrophilicity by promoting the formation of interconnected ionic clusters, as validated by spectroscopic and morphological analyses. The SPEEK membrane with DS = 75% achieved a peak dehumidification efficiency of 52.4% and water vapor permeability of 1.61 × 10 −5 kg m −2 s −1 , outperforming the DS = 45% membrane by 10.5% in efficiency. Performance was further optimized under operational conditions of 0.2 MPa pressure and 27 °C temperature gradient, which mitigated concentration polarization. These results demonstrate that DS-controlled SPEEK membranes offer a scalable, energy-saving solution for industrial gas dehumidification, with potential applications in air conditioning, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and microelectronics processing.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are generally employed as proton exchange membranes in fuel cell gas sensors, but they suffer from environmental persistence, safety concerns, and high cost. Here, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) is employed to replace the PFAS and a chemically compatible hydroxylated SPEEK ionomer binder is designed to reduce the interfacial resistance at the catalyst–membrane boundary. Due to the high proton conductivity, improved interfacial proton transport and enhanced intrinsic hydrophilicity of SPEEK, the resulting PFAS-free gas sensor exhibits a twofold higher response at 100 ppm H 2 S compared to a commercial Nafion benchmark, along with high sensitivity (0.635 µA·ppm 1 ) and faster response time (31 s). The device operates stably across 15–95% RH and retains over 90% of its initial response after 60 days. This work establishes SPEEK as a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to fluorinated membranes and provides a general interface-engineering strategy for high-performance electrochemical gas sensing.
