Multifunctional PNIPAM Hydrogels Based on Supercritical CO2-Assisted PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT Hybrid Structure

Shuangshuang Yang,Zhicun Chu,Bo Gao,Xiaoli Zheng,Ichiro Imae,Jun Chen,Qun Xu

We report herein the typical conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) to be successfully modified onto single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using a supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) antisolvent-induced polymer epitaxy method, and the role of the experimental temperature of SC CO2 on the modification process was systematically investigated. PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composites with optimal modification prepared at 80 °C and 15 MPa were used as functional fillers, and functional temperature-sensitive composite hydrogels of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs/poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) were successfully prepared. With the help of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other characterization means, the chemical composition and microscopic morphology of the composite hydrogel were systematically analyzed. The composite hydrogel exhibits reversible temperature-sensitive responsiveness, transitioning from a transparent swollen state at room temperature to an opaque collapsed state at 32 °C, and demonstrates strong adhesion to various substrates, including glass, plastic, metal, and skin. Meanwhile, the near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion properties of this hydrogel were evaluated, showing a significant and uniform temperature increase upon NIR irradiation. The drug release behavior was assessed in vitro after loading the hydrophilic anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with the stimulation of NIR light, achieving an accelerated and on-demand release. Our experimental results indicate that the pore size increases with the increase of the addition of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs, enabling the precise controlled release of 5-FU. This work provides new insights and experimental support for the design of intelligent drug delivery systems.

Biodegradable PBAT/SWCNT Porous Material for Piezoresistive Sensing and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Ming Jiang,Haili Zhao,Tao Chen,Guangming Li

Porous biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT)-based material, used in wearable electronics for sensing human motion, is beneficial for environmental protection. Although PBAT demonstrates good elongation at break and impact performance, specific studies on its processing, modification, and porous structure are needed. Therefore, PBAT/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) porous material was prepared via a salt-templating method. It was found that part of the SWCNT was embedded in the walls of the pores in the PBAT substrate, while another part was exposed on the pore surface. PBAT served as the structural framework, and SWCNT functioned mainly as the active component, especially the SWCNT exposed on the surface. This unique microstructure imparted the porous material with desirable piezoresistive properties and effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities. When the material was compressed, the exposed SWCNT was forced into closer contact, increasing the number of electrical transport pathways and further enhancing conductivity. The resulting porous sensor exhibited a notable response to strain up to 100% and demonstrated high sensitivity (1.25) while maintaining robust cyclic stability after 1000 cycles. Human pulse and finger flexion were successfully recorded using the fabricated porous sensor. Moreover, the porous material displayed EMI shielding capabilities, primarily through the absorption of electromagnetic (EM) waves, a phenomenon associated with the rough surface of the pores created by the exposed SWCNT. The overall electromagnetic shielding effectiveness was around 60 dB. Given these advantages, the green biodegradable material PBAT shows significant potential for application in piezoresistive sensors and electromagnetic interference shielding with appropriate modification and preparation.

Preparation and thermoelectric properties of SWCNT/PEDOT:PSS coated tellurium nanorod composite films

Qiufeng Meng,Kefeng Cai,Yong Du,Lidong Chen

In this work, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/PEDOT:PSS coated Te nanorod (PC-Te) composite films were prepared by a simple vacuum assisted filtration method, and H 2 SO 4 treatment was employed to improve the thermoelectric performance of the composite films. The addition of SWCNTs apparently improved the electrical conductivity while reduced the Seebeck coefficient of the composite films, resulting in a reduction of the power factor. After treated with H 2 SO 4 , the electrical conductivity of the composite films was further improved, and the Seebeck coefficient decreased slightly. As a consequence, an optimized power factor of 104 μW/mK 2 (corresponding to the electrical conductivity of 332 S/cm and Seebeck coefficient of 56 μV/K, respectively) was obtained for the sample containing 70 wt% SWCNTs at 300 K. A flexible thermoelectric generator prototype was fabricated to demonstrate the output properties. The open circuit voltage and maximum output power delivered from the prototype were 5.6 mV and 53.6 nW, respectively, at a temperature difference of 44 K.

Scalable nanoconfined GO/SWCNT-OH membranes for efficient high-salinity organic wastewater treatment

Yechen An,Xiaoxu Gao,Jing-Long Han,Yuting Ning,Xinping Fu,Ruiyun Ren,Liang Mei,Wenli Jiang,Ruifeng Yan,Jun Cui,Yu Tao,Aijie Wang

Recovering valuable organic compounds from high-salinity organic wastewater is essential for sustainable chemical manufacturing. However, conventional polymeric membranes suffer from insufficient organic/inorganic selectivity, poor solvent resistance, and severe membrane fouling during practical applications. Herein, we developed a hydroxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-OH)-modulated graphene oxide (GO) membrane to address these challenges. By precisely regulating the inner diameter and hydroxyl content of CNT-OH, rapid transport channels for water molecules and hydrated ions were constructed, which simultaneously suppressed interlayer swelling and enhanced the rejection of organic compounds. The optimized GO/single-walled hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-OH) membrane achieved water permeability of 28.7 l m −2 h −1 bar −1 and separation factor above 15 for negatively charged dyes, antibiotics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) relative to inorganic salts (NaCl), outperforming commercial nanofiltration (NF) membranes by one order of magnitude. During one-month continuous treatment of real erythromycin (ERY) fermentation broth, the membrane showed only a 7.1% flux decline and maintained 99.9% ERY rejection. Compared with conventional ultrafiltration-nanofiltration (UF-NF) processes, the system reduced operating costs by 66.4% and CO 2 emissions by 76.8%, demonstrating pronounced economic and environmental advantages. Overall, the system demonstrates outstanding application potential, strong scalability and engineering feasibility.

Synergistic Photothermal Therapy and Chemotherapy Enabled by Tumor Microenvironment-Responsive Targeted SWCNT Delivery

Shuoye Yang,Jiaxin Liu,Huajian Yuan,Qianqian Cheng,Weiwei Shen,Yanteng Lv,Yongmei Xiao,Lu Zhang,Peng Li

As a novel therapeutic approach, photothermal therapy (PTT) combined with chemotherapy can synergistically produce antitumor effects. Herein, dithiodipropionic acid (DTDP) was used as a donor of disulfide bonds sensitive to the tumor microenvironment for establishing chemical bonding between the photosensitizer indocyanine green amino (ICG-NH 2 ) and acidified single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNT surface was then coated with conjugates (HD) formed by the targeted modifier hyaluronic acid (HA) and 1,2-tetragacylphosphatidyl ethanolamine (DMPE). After doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), used as the model drug, was loaded by CNT carriers, functional nano-delivery systems (HD/CNTs-SS-ICG@DOX) were developed. Nanosystems can effectively induce tumor cell (MCF-7) death in vitro by accelerating cell apoptosis, affecting cell cycle distribution and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The in vivo antitumor activity results in tumor-bearing model mice, further verifying that HD/CNTs-SS-ICG@DOX inhibited tumor growth most significantly by mediating a synergistic effect between chemotherapy and PTT, while various functional nanosystems have shown good biological tissue safety. In conclusion, the composite CNT delivery systems developed in this study possess the features of high biocompatibility, targeted delivery, and responsive drug release, and can achieve the efficient coordination of chemotherapy and PTT, with broad application prospects in cancer treatment.

Flexible Thermoelectric 2X-TTA-AgF/SWCNT Composites via Bridging Ionic and Organic Domains

Yifan Lv,Shuang Liu,Peiyao Liu,Wenyu Lai,Yunfei Cai,Bingchen Huo,Fengxia Kuang,Baolin Li,Cun-Yue Guo

Organic thermoelectric materials offer flexible, solution-processable energy harvestingfor wearable electronics, yet their low power factors (PFs) impede practical applications. Here a dual phase interfacial engineering strategy is presented that decouples thesechannels by integrating organic small molecules (OSMs), thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]thieno[2,3-d]thiophene (TTA) derivatives, with Ag⁺(Ag) ionic bridges on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) networks. Hybridizing TTA and their derivativeswith SWCNTs affords flexible thermoelectric composites. Subsequent AgF solutiontreatment further strengthens interfacial coupling between the OSMs and SWCNTs. Byintroducing Ag+ and in situ generated Ag nanoparticles, the Seebeck coefficient issignificantly enhanced while maintaining high electrical conductivity, leading toremarkable improvement in composites’ PF value. The optimized 2I-TTA (30%)-AgF/SWCNT films achieve a room temperature PF of 995.37 ± 6.01 μW m−1 K−2, retainover 88.3% of their initial power factor after 10, 000 bending cycles, and sustain stableoutput under temperature gradients up to 160 °C. Thermoelectric generator made of 2I-TTA (30%)-AgF/SWCNT composite and n-type SWCNTs generates a maximumpower density output of 186.79 μW g−1 at ΔT = 50 K. This work establishes metal ion-mediated interfacial engineering as a novel paradigm for high-efficiency, durable, andwearable energy harvesting technologies.Key words: Organic small molecules; Composite thermoelectric materials; Silver;Energy filtering effect; Wearable energy harvesting

Energy Storage and Mechanical Performance of PVDF-HFP/SWCNT Composites with Low Permeability

Dong Yue,Xiaoxu Liu,Jinghua Yin,Yu Feng,Jialong Li,He Zhao,Yanpeng Li,Li Li

Polymer dielectric capacitors, with their high energy storage density and fast release of energy, have recently received increasing attention for their ability to meet the critical requirements of pulsed power devices in low-consumption systems. In this context, this paper reports that surface-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were successfully synthesized and used as fillers to improve the energy storage and mechanical performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based composites. The PVDF-HFP/SWCNT composites realize high dielectric constants and low percolation thresholds of 62 and 0.25, respectively. In particular, when composites possess an SWCNT content of only 0.4 vol.%, an acceptable energy storage density of 0.24 J/cm 3 at a low electric field of 700 kV/cm along with a high energy storage efficiency (74%) is also observed. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and breaking elongation are 44 MPa and 8.1%, respectively. According to detailed characterization results, SWCNT with low filling are uniformly dispersed and show a certain orientation in PVDF-HFP after surface modification, which is the key to improve the composite performance. These results provide an effective method for fabricating flexible-polymer composites with a high density of energy storage.

Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of ERα Based on AuNPs-SWCNT Composites and Hemin@HKUST-1

Mengli Wang,Lele Ma,Le Kang,Mingsan Miao,Huaixia Yang

Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is an important biomarker for breast cancer which is positive in over 75% of breast cancer cases. In this study, an electrochemical biosensor was constructed for sensitive detection of ERα based on the signal amplification of AuNPs-SWCNT nanocomposites and hemin@HKUST-1. AuNPs-SWCNT was served as a conductive substrate, and be used to immobilize the aptamer (Apt) by an Au–S bonding. Then, Apt, ERα and antibody (Ab) formed a sandwich composite structure through specific recognition and immobilized on the electrode. The hemin@HKUST-1 was introduced into the biosensor via an amide bond with Ab and acted as the signal molecule. AuNPs-SWCNT could significantly enhance the conductivity of the electrode and the large specific surface area of HKUST-1 enabled it to load more hemin, and greatly improved the sensitivity of the biosensor. The detection limit (LOD) of the biosensor could reach 27.8 fg·ml−1 after optimization of the conditions, with the current intensity and the logarithm of the ERα concentration exhibited a good linear relationship between 100 fg·ml−1 and 100 ng·ml−1. In addition, the biosensor possessed excellent selectivity, stability, reproducibility and Interference immunity. More importantly, it shows great application potential in practical detection.

Robust SWCNT-OH/GO membranes for scalable recovery of moxifloxacin from high-salinity organic wastewater

An Yechen,Mei Liang,Yang Ruijie,Cui Jun,Zhang Wenhai,Han Jing-Long,Jiang Wenli,Ren Ruiyun,Gao Xiaoxu,He Zhihui,Xu Haoran,Yan Ruifeng,An Quan-Fu,Li Zhiling,Cheng Haoyi,Tao Yu,Wang Aijie,Zeng Zhiyuan

Membrane-based separation offers a sustainable route for resource recovery from high-salinity organic wastewater, yet graphene oxide (GO) membranes remain constrained by poor selectivity, limited solvent stability, and challenges in scale-up. Here, we report a hydroxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-OH) reinforced GO membrane, in which SWCNT-OH promotes robust inorganic crosslinking with sodium tetraborate (Na 2 B 4 O 7 ) to form rapid transport channels for water and ions, while suppressing organic passage. This architecture enhances the moxifloxacin (MXF)/NaCl separation factor more than fivefold (from 4.2 to 22.2) and increases water permeability over fourfold (from 7.2 to 30.1 l m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). The membrane was scaled up to 11 m 2 and deployed for continuous treatment of MXF crystallization mother liquor over seven days, delivering a stable recovery of 10 kg MXF per day under industrially relevant conditions. These findings establish a scalable strategy for the design of robust nanocarbon-based membranes, advancing resource-efficient treatment of high-salinity wastewater.

High-Energy SWCNT Cathode for Aqueous Al-Ion Battery Boosted by Multi-Ion Intercalation Chemistry

Wending Pan,Yan Zhao,Jianjun Mao,Yifei Wang,Xiaolong Zhao,Kee Wah Leong,Shijing Luo,Xinhua Liu,Huizhi Wang,Jin Xuan,Shichun Yang,Yue Chen,Dennis Y. C. Leung

The aqueous Al-ion battery has achieved great progress in recent years. It now shows comparable performance to that of even non-aqueous Al-ion batteries. However, it also shows relatively low energy output and there is limited general understanding of the mechanism behind this restriction to its practical application. Thus, the development of a high-performance cathode material is in great demand. Herein, a high-capacity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is developed as a cathode for the water-in-salt electrolyte-based aqueous Al-ion battery, which provides an ultra-high specific capacity of 790 mAh g –1 ( based on the mass of SWCNT ) at a high current density of 5 A g –1 even after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the SWCNT/Al battery shows a complicated multi-ion intercalation mechanism, where AlCl 4 – , Cl – , Al 3+ , and H + can function at the same time, improving the battery output. Beyond recently revealed H + and metal ion co-intercalation, the Cl-assisted intercalation of Al 3+ ions mechanism is also studied by experimental characterization and modeling for the first time, which significantly boosts the Al 3+ storage capacity. This multi-ion intercalation mechanism combines the high-voltage anion deintercalation and the high-capacity cation intercalation, and thus, benefits the development and application of high-energy Al-ion batteries in the future.

In situ fabrication of SWCNT@ZIS nanocomposites for enhanced visible light driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ligang Ma,Yihuan Ding,Tingting Chen,Xinlan Li,Zhiyi Song,Xiaoqian Ai,Xiaoshan Wu

Single-walled carbon nanotubes/ZnIn 2 S 4 (SWCNT@ZIS) nanocomposites with tunable SWCNT content were successfully synthesized via the in situ growth of three-dimensional (3D) ZIS nanostructures on the surface of one-dimensional (1D) carboxylated SWCNTs. Structural and morphological analyses revealed the formation of a robust interfacial connection between the SWCNTs and ZIS nanostructures, with the 3D ZIS uniformly anchored onto the 1D SWCNT framework. This unique architecture facilitates the directional transport of photogenerated charge carriers, significantly enhancing electron transfer and separation efficiency. During the ZIS growth process in an oil bath, partial removal of oxygen-containing functional groups from the carboxylated SWCNTs was verified, which effectively preserves the intrinsic high conductivity of the SWCNTs. Moreover, the incorporation of SWCNTs markedly reduced the agglomeration of 3D ZIS nanostructures, leading to increased specific surface area, higher density of active sites, and improved visible-light absorption. Under visible-light irradiation ( λ  > 420 nm), the SWCNT@ZIS nanocomposites demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance to pristine ZIS. The versatile in situ growth strategy on SWCNTs provides a promising approach for designing and fabricating advanced semiconductor SWCNT hybrid materials with tailored properties for photocatalytic applications.

Scalable wet-spun stretchable conductive fibers with SWCNT-enhanced mechanical and electrical properties for multifunctional wearables

Xu Zhao,Zirong Luo,Tuanzhang Li,Wenfa Mao,Fangting Mo,Yanqiu Shao,Shuang Li,Jizhen Zhang,Na Kong,Jihua Li,Jinlong Tao

Stretchable conductive fibers demonstrate considerable potential in various wearable flexible devices. However, the scalable fabrication of stretchable conductive fibers that combine ultrahigh stretchability with excellent electrical conductivity remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a simple and scalable wet-spinning strategy to prepare continuous multifunctional pre-vulcanized natural rubber (NR) latex (PNRL)/single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) composite fibers. The effects of SWCNT microstructure and doping ratio on the mechanical and electrical properties of the composite fibers are systematically investigated. Remarkably, with only 1 wt% SWCNT, the composite fibers achieve a tensile strength of 28.46 ± 1.41 MPa, a strain at break of up to 900 ± 70 %, and an electrical conductivity of 0.297 ± 0.09 S·m −1 . In-situ X-ray scattering characterization revealed that SWCNTs facilitate strain-induced crystallization of NR, acting as nucleation sites that promote the stretch-induced alignment of NR chains, leading to a significant enhancement in the mechanical properties of the PNRL/SWCNT composite fibers. These fibers demonstrate excellent multifunctionality and practical applicability as strain sensors and solar-heating fabrics. This study not only offers a scalable route to high-performance stretchable conductive fibers, but also provides valuable insights into the design principles for optimizing nanocomposite fiber properties.
