The effect of co-pyrolysis temperature for iron-biochar composites on their adsorption behavior of antimonite and antimonate in aqueous solution

Liping Zhang,Yingbo Dong,Junfei Liu,Chenjing Liu,Wei Liu,Hai Lin

Iron-biochar is an efficient adsorbent for contaminants, whereas the role of prepared temperature on removal of antimony (Sb) is unacquainted. In this study, the iron-biochar composites (FBC) were fabricated by co-pyrolysis at 500°C and 800°C and applied to remove antimonite (Sb(III)) and antimonate (Sb(V)) in aqueous. The results showed Fe 3 O 4 was loaded on biochar prepared at 500°C (FBC500), while FeOOH with zero-valent iron (ZVI) was formed on biochar pyrolyzed at 800°C (FBC800). However, FBC500 showed the maximum absorbance for Sb(V) (30.47 mg/g), and FBC800 had optimal removal efficiency for Sb(III) (52.30 mg/g). The sorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on FBC was multilayer heterogeneous chemisorption (complexation and ligand exchange). Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) with less toxicity during the corrosion of ZVI on FBC800, leading to the co-precipitation of Sb 2 O 5 . The electrostatic interaction affected the adsorption of Sb(V) on FBC500 and FBC800. The FBC800 showed superior reusability and resistance than FBC500.

A Sb(III)-specific efflux transporter from Ensifer adhaerens E-60

Ruixiang Yang,Thiruselvam Viswanatham,Shuangqin Huang,Yuanping Li,Yanshuang Yu,Jinlin Zhang,Jian Chen,Martin Herzberg,Renwei Feng,Barry P. Rosen,Christopher Rensing

Antimony is pervasive environmental toxic substance, and numerous genes encoding mechanisms to resist, transform and extrude the toxic metalloid antimony have been discovered in various microorganisms. Here we identified a major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporter, AntB, on the chromosome of the arsenite-oxidizing bacterium Ensifer adhaerens E-60 that confers resistance to Sb(III) and Sb(V). The antB gene is adjacent to gene encoding a LysR family transcriptional regulator termed LysR ars , which is an As(III)/Sb(III)-responsive transcriptional repressor that is predicted to control expression of antB . Similar antB and lysR ars genes are found in related arsenic-resistant bacteria, especially strains of Ensifer adhaerens , and the lysR ars gene adjacent to antB encodes a member of a divergent subgroup of putative LysR-type regulators. Closely related AntB and LysR ars orthologs contain three conserved cysteine residues, which are Cys17, Cys99, and Cys350 in AntB and Cys81, Cys289 and Cys294 in LysR ars , respectively. Expression of antB is induced by As(III), Sb(III), Sb(V) and Rox(III) (4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl arsenite). Heterologous expression of antB in E. coli AW3110 (Δ ars ) conferred resistance to Sb(III) and Sb(V) and reduced the intracellular concentration of Sb(III). The discovery of the Sb(III) efflux transporter AntB enriches our knowledge of the role of the efflux transporter in the antimony biogeochemical cycle .

One-Dimensional Sb(III) Halides with Orange Emission and White-Light Conversion Capability

Mingyue Chen,Kunjie Liu,Yun Zhang,Ruonan Yao,Jing Zhao,Quanlin Liu

Organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their structural diversity and compositional tunability, showcasing exceptional photoluminescence properties and emerging as a hotspot in optoelectronic materials research. In this work, two one-dimensional compounds, (C5H14N2)3Sb4Cl18 and (C5H14N2)SbBr5 (C5H14N22+ = 2-methylpiperazine dication), were designed and synthesized, which crystallize in the P-1 and P212121 space groups, respectively. PL measurements reveal that (C5H14N2)3Sb4Cl18 exhibits a bright orange emission with the strongest peak at 630 nm. Combined density functional theory calculations and spectroscopic analyses further confirm that the emission originates from the inorganic units. A white light-emitting diode device was successfully fabricated by mixing (C5H14N2)3Sb4Cl18 powder with commercial green and blue phosphors and coating it onto an ultraviolet (UV) LED chip, which exhibits a high color rendering index of 93.8. This study provides a promising candidate for the development of high-performance, low-cost solid-state lighting materials.

Iron-Modified Alkaline Lignin Chitosan Aerogel Microspheres for Sb(III) Removal in Water

Yaping Cheng,Haimin Liao,Huimei Shan,Yunquan Liu,Huinan Mo

Antimony (Sb), as a toxic heavy metal, has drawn worldwide attention, and its efficient removal from water has become increasingly urgent. In this study, an iron-modified alkaline lignin chitosan (Fe-ALCS) gel bead is prepared by the freeze-drying method to remove Sb(III) from the aqueous solution. The static adsorption experiment discusses the various environmental influences on the adsorption performance of Fe-ALCS for Sb(III) removal. The adsorption mechanism is explored by combining adsorption kinetics, isothermal adsorption, and characterization methods (such as FTIR, XRD, XPS, etc). The results show that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of Sb(III) decreases with the increase in pH and mass–volume ratio. With the increase in the initial Sb(III) concentration,Qeshowed a rapid increasing trend in the range of 50–100 mg/L and continued to rise with the extension of contact time (t), reaching the maximum value at 3540 min. Under the optimal conditions of pH = 3,m/v= 1.0 g/L, andC0= 20 mg/L, the removal efficiency (Re) value is 95.07%, which is still approximately 86.8% after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The maximum adsorption capacity is 266.58 mg/g fitted by the Langmuir model. The adsorption mechanism is mainly related to the iron-based active site of Fe–O(OH), where the O–H on its surface undergoes ligand exchange with Sb(OH)3to form a stable Fe–O–Sb coordination structure. Additionally, C–OH, C–O, and other functional groups in ALCS also contribute to Sb adsorption. Fe-ALCS is an environmentally friendly, renewable, and convenient biomass adsorbent with good potential for wastewater treatment.

Electroactive Modified Carbon Nanotube Filter for Simultaneous Detoxification and Sequestration of Sb(III)

Yanbiao Liu,Peng Wu,Fuqiang Liu,Fang Li,Xiaoqiang An,Jianshe Liu,Zhiwei Wang,Chensi Shen,Wolfgang Sand

Herein, we rationally designed a dual-functional electroactive filter system for simultaneous detoxification and sequestration of Sb(III). Binder-free and nanoscale TiO2-modified carbon nanotube (CNT) filters were fabricated. Upon application of an external electrical field, in situ transformation of Sb(III) to less toxic Sb(V) can be achieved, which is further sequestered by TiO2. Sb(III) removal kinetics and capacity increase with applied voltage and flow rate. This can be explained by the synergistic effects of the filter’s flow-through design, electrochemical reactivity, small pore size, and increased number of exposed sorption sites. STEM characterization confirms that Sb were mainly sequestered by TiO2. XPS, AFS, and XAFS results verify that the Sb(III) conversion process was accelerated by the electrical field. The proposed electroactive filter technology works effectively across a wide pH range. The presence of sulfate, chloride, and carbonate ions negligibly inhibited Sb(III) removal. Exhausted TiO2–CNT filters can be effectively regenerated using NaOH solution. At 2 V, 100 μg/L Sb(III)-spiked tap water generated ∼1600 bed volumes of effluent with >90% efficiency. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the adsorption energy of Sb(III) onto TiO2 increases (from −3.81 eV to −4.18 eV) and Sb(III) becomes more positively charged upon application of an electrical field.

Sb(III)-resistance mechanisms of a novel bacterium from non-ferrous metal tailings

Jihai Gu,Geoffrey Sunahara,Robert Duran,Jun Yao,Yongqiang Cui,CengCeng Tang,Hongquan Li,Victor G. Mihucz

Understanding the mechanism(s) of microbial resistance to antimony (Sb) is critical in the bioremediation of Sb polluted environments. Here a novel bacterium ( Acinetobacter sp. JH7) isolated from mine tailings decreased the Microtox toxicity of a Sb(III)-containing medium. DNA sequencing and physiological testing were employed for the identification and characterization of strain JH7. Following a batch experiment, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and antimony speciation analyses determined the adsorption and oxidation of antimony. Analyses of Sb(III) distribution revealed that extracellular polymeric substances and cell walls inhibited Sb(III) entry into JH7 cells. FTIR studies indicated that key functional groups including –OH, C–N, and C–O likely participated in Sb(III) biosorption. Isothermal and kinetic studies revealed that Sb(III) sorption to viable JH7 cells fitted the Langmuir model ( R 2  = 0.99) and could be described by pseudo-second order kinetics ( R 2  = 0.99). Furthermore, the increase of anti-oxidative enzymatic activity of JH7 enhanced the intracellular detoxification of Sb(III), which would indirectly contribute to the Sb(III) resistance ability of strain JH7. Our results indicate that biosorption and ROS oxidation of Sb(III) were likely responsible for the decreased toxicity of Sb. The greater understanding how Acinetobacter sp. JH7 lowers the environmental Sb(III) toxicity could provide a basis for future research and subsequent development of technologies for the remediation of Sb contaminated sites.

Removal of Sb(III) from wastewater by magnesium oxide and the related mechanisms

Si Xu,Zuqi Zhong,Weizhen Liu,Hong Deng,Zhang Lin

Pollution and remediation of antimony in aquatic ecosystems have been paid increasing attention. In the present work, environmentally friendly nano-MgO was used for the first time to remove Sb(III) from the water system. The batch experiments indicated that the nano-MgO calcined at 400 °C (named 400-MgO) exhibited superior adsorption capacity for Sb(III). The adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Freundlich model, and especially when the initial concentration is 15 mg‧L −1 , the adsorption capacity is as high as 140.1 mg‧g −1 . Researches through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the main removal mechanisms lie in the generation of Mg active sites, which is capable of coordinating Sb(III), during the hydration process of MgO, providing a nucleation center for the progressive production of MgSb 2 O 4 . As a whole, precipitation is the predominant mechanism for MgO to remove Sb(III). Over time, a part of MgO is hydrated to Mg(OH) 2 , and consequent chemisorption also helps to remove Sb(III). Our work has demonstrated that nano-MgO is a promising adsorbent for Sb(III) removal from contaminated water and provided new insights into the interaction mechanism between MgO and Sb(III).

Unraveling the effects of gallic acid on Sb(III) adsorption and oxidation on goethite

Tong-liang Wu,Qian Sun,Guo-dong Fang,Pei-xin Cui,Cun Liu,Marcelo Eduardo Alves,Wen-xiu Qin,Dong-mei Zhou,Zhen-qing Shi,Yu-jun Wang

Natural organic matter (NOM) profoundly influences the metal(loid)s immobilization by iron (Fe) minerals, which, in turn, are the host phase for Sb that control its mobilization and bioavailability. However, the potential effect of the redox-active phenolic acids derived from NOM on this process has rarely been explored. Therefore, the adsorption of Sb(III) on goethite and Sb(III) oxidation in the presence of a common phenolic acid—gallic acid (GA)—was systematically investigated. The reaction mechanisms were unraveled by the combination of wet chemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Our results showed the addition of GA significantly inhibited Sb adsorption on goethite as the pH increased. Except for the competitive adsorption by GA, the inhibition also resulted from the extensive Sb(III) oxidation in the suspension and the lower Sb(V) sorption capacity of goethite at higher pH. The alkaline condition facilitated the generation of reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide) and quinone species (semiquinone radical (SQ − ) and oxidized GA), accounting for the significant Sb(III) oxidation in the solution and on the goethite surface. Besides, the edge-sharing inner-sphere complexes were formed between Sb and goethite regardless of the presence of GA. Our findings demonstrated the remarkable role of the phenolic groups in NOM on the adsorption of Sb(III) on goethite.

Enhanced removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solutions using Fe-Mn binary oxide-modified attapulgite

Weixiao Gong,Zhendong Liu,Zheng Wang,Yannan Jia,Guanghui Lu,Lu Li,Xiaoqin Li,Junchi Zhang,Haichen Cui,Yuanxiang Shan,Wanting Feng,Hongqin Xue

FeMn-HATP was synthesized as an efficient Sb(III) adsorbent. • Synergistic oxidative adsorption by FeMn-HATP enhances Sb(III) removal efficiency. • Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies investigated FeMn-HATP adsorption. • An Sb(III) degradation mechanistic pathway is proposed. • FeMn-HATP demonstrated excellent regeneration performance in fixed-bed column tests. An affordable, environmentally friendly, simple adsorbent for Sb(III) removal from aqueous solutions was prepared using attapulgite (ATP) as the matrix, and FeSO 4 and KMnO 4 as metal precursors, through an in situ precipitation approach. The morphology, pore structure, and surface chemical properties of the material were analyzed using various characterization techniques. The results indicate that the iron-manganese bimetallic-modified acid-activated ATP (FeMn-HATP) surface is loaded with relatively uniformly distributed iron and manganese components, and its specific surface area and pore structure differ significantly from the original ATP. These changes promote pollutant molecule diffusion and contact. In batch adsorption experiments, FeMn-HATP achieved good Sb(III) removal performance and remained relatively stable within a pH range of 4 −10. The material maintained a relatively stable adsorption capacity even in the presence of high concentrations of other anions. Adsorption of Sb(III) by the modified ATP better conforms to both Elovich kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 102.79 mg/g at 318.15 K. Fixed-bed cycling experiments demonstrated that FeMn-HATP retained significant adsorption capacity after five NaOH regenerations, with a dynamic adsorption capacity of 14.68 mg/g and a regeneration efficiency of 68.16%. Overall, FeMn-HATP exhibits good potential for Sb(III) removal with a degree of reusability, indicating promise for the treatment of antimony-containing wastewater. The high efficient Sb(III) removal by cauliflower like amorphous nanoscale zero-valent iron (A-nZVI)

Qi Cheng,Qingrui Li,Xiaojie Huang,Xiaoqin Li,Yunyan Wang,Weizhen Liu,Zhang Lin

In this study, cauliflower like amorphous nanoscale zero-valent iron (A-nZVI) was prepared and its performance on the removal of Sb(III) was investigated and compared with that of nZVI. The results indicated that the removal of Sb(III) by nZVI and A-nZVI followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, but the removal of Sb(III) by A-nZVI was more stable and its removal capacity (558.2 mg/g) is much higher than that of nZVI (91.3 mg/g). Moreover, the effects of initial Sb(III) concentration, initial pH and anions such as Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , PO 4 3- , and AsO 4 3- were also investigated. A-nZVI showed extremely high selectivity towards Sb(III) in that 500 mg/L of AsO 4 3- and PO 4 3- shows little impact on its removal, while the removal of Sb(III) by nZVI was almost inhibited under the same condition. The combination of SEM-EDS, XPS, XRD and FTIR revealed the removal of Sb(III) by nZVI and A-nZVI were synergistic effects of oxidation and adsorption, but less Sb(III) (39.5%) was oxidized by A-nZVI. More γ-FeOOH and γ-Fe 2 O 3 were formed at the surface of A-nZVI during the reaction. Both oxides have high affinity toward Sb(III), which might cause the higher removal capacity and selectivity for the removal of Sb(III) by A-nZVI. In conclusion, A-nZVI showed great potential for the remediation of Sb(III) in groundwater.

Simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) from mining wastewater by reduced graphene oxide/bimetallic nanoparticles

Wei Chen,Ze Lin,Zhenxian Chen,Xiulan Weng,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Antimony (Sb) contamination is a significant environmental issue in mining impacted areas, where the use of nanomaterials to remove such metalloid species has attracted much research attention. In this study, the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was investigated using a reduced graphene oxide/Fe/Ni (rGO-Fe/Ni NPs) composite. Compared to rGO alone the composite exhibited enhanced removal efficiency. For rGO-Fe/Ni NPs the maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacities were 2.00 and 1.41 mg·g −1 , respectively, compared to 1.70 and 1.02 mg·g −1 for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively, when using rGO only. This indicated that Fe/Ni enhanced the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V). Advanced characterization via SEM and XPS before and after exposure to Sb indicated that both Sb(III) and Sb(V) were adsorbed on to the surface of rGO-Fe/Ni NPs, followed by oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V). Adsorption and oxidation kinetics both conformed to pseudo-second order models, where the mechanism for the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by rGO-Fe/Ni NPs involved a combination of both adsorption and oxidation. Moreover, the practical adsorption capacity of rGO-Fe/Ni was not limited to Sb, since in a real mining wastewater; containing a mixture of metal(loid)s, while rGO-Fe/Ni exhibited a Sb adsorption capacity of 1.59 mg·g −1 , it also exhibited similar adsorption capacities for As (2.61 mg·g −1 ), Pb (2.41 mg·g −1 ), and Cd (1.25 mg·g −1 ). The composite was also highly reusable with a removal efficiency for Sb(III) as high as 72.7% after 4 cycles of use. Thus, rGO-Fe/Ni NPs has significant potential for the practical removal of Sb species and other heavy metal(loid)s in mining impacted wastewaters.

Adsorption-Based Removal of Sb (III) from Wastewater by Graphene Oxide-Modified Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Composites

Yilu Deng,Qiming Mao,Shuang Luo,Xiande Xie,Lin Luo

The treatment of Sb (III) wastewater produced from mining activities is uniquely challenging and has therefore garnered increasing attention. Here, an amino-modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework material (UiO-66-NH2) and its composites were loaded onto graphene oxide (GO@UiO-66-NH2) via the hydrothermal method, after which these materials were used to adsorb Sb (III) in mine wastewater. The effects of adsorption time, pH, initial Sb (III) concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dosage on the removal performance of Sb (III) were then investigated. The adsorption processes of Sb (III) were examined via adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analyses. XRD, SEM, and FTIR analyses demonstrated the presence of a porous structure and high levels of oxygen-containing functional groups on the UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 surfaces. During the Sb (III) adsorption process, the adsorption rates of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 were very fast in the first 10 minutes, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 12 h, with the adsorption efficiencies of 91.76% and 93.79%, respectively. At a pH of 7.0, 25°C, an initial Sb (III) concentration of 100 mg/L, and an adsorbent dosage of 0.04 g/L, the maximum Sb (III) adsorption capacities of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 reached 39.23 mg/g and 61.07 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process was accurately described by the Langmuir model, meaning that the Sb (III) was adsorbed through single-layer uniform adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption process was highly consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, which was indicative of spontaneous and endothermic chemical adsorption. Additionally, the Sb (III) removal efficiency could be maintained approximately 70% after sorption-desorption recycling four times. Therefore, our study provides an economical and effective method for the removal of Sb (III) in wastewater treatment.
