Ambient-pressure-dried (APD) crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogel has been developed through a facile sol-gel approach. Propylene oxide was added into the tin and antimony precursors to cause rapid formation of the wet gel, which was then modified with silica and dried under ambient pressure. A silica modification carried out by soaking the wet gel in TEOS/ethanol solution, in combination with solvent exchange, allowed to avoid the risky and costly supercritical drying (SCD) process. The silica possessed dual-functional effects during the synthesis process as surface silylation agent and underlying silica structure. FT-IR, SAXS, TEM, and nitrogen physisorption analysis revealed a favorable silica dispersion, outstanding specific surface area (254 m 2 g −1 ), pore volume (0.52 cm 3 g −1 ), and ideal pore size (8.75 nm) for the products. The key properties of the APD crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogel were compared with that of SCD aerogel at the same synthesis conditions. Finally, the electrochemical behaviors of 3D electrochemical system filled with the as-synthesized materials as particle electrodes were investigated, which with regard to voltammetric charge and polarization impedance. Padding of the crack-free Sb-SnO 2 xerogels yielded a voltammetric charge 2.99 times as large as that of conventional electrochemical system, and decreased the charge transfer resistance from 46.19 to 6.39 Ω, which realize intrinsically enhanced electrochemical performance for 3D electrochemical system.

This study focused on the preparation, characterization, and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal performance of the SnO 2 -coated reactive electrochemical membrane (REM). This REM was fabricated by loading SnO 2 on the reduced TiO 2 nanotube arrays (RTNA)-based Ti membrane (TM). Regarding the dopant for SnO 2 , Sb was more effective in boosting the electrocatalytic activity than Bi, and the energy consumption for Sb-SnO 2 -coated REM (TM/RTNA/ATO) was lower than Bi-SnO 2 -coated REM (TM/RTNA/BTO). As for the internal layer, RTNA provided TM/RTNA/ATO with more electroactive surface areas and prolonged the service lifetime. Compared with batch mode, the SMX removal efficiency in flow-through mode was increased up to 8.4-fold. The SMX degradation performances were also affected by fluid velocity, current density, initial SMX concentration, and electrolyte concentration. The synergistic effects of • OH oxidation and direct electron transfer were responsible for the effective removal of SMX. TM/RTNA/ATO was proved to be stable and durable by multi-cycle and accelerated lifetime tests. Its extensive applicability was verified with high removal efficiencies of SMX in the surface water and wastewater effluent. These results demonstrate the promise of TM/RTNA/ATO for water treatment applications.

Electrochemical advanced oxidation technology produces hydroxyl radicals and has no secondary pollution, making it one of the most promising technologies for treating organic pollutants in industrial wastewater. Nevertheless, low energy efficiency and short lifetime are the key issues hindering the widespread application of electrodes. In this study, TiC nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the deposition solution, and the Ti/Sb-SnO 2 electrode was prepared by sol electrodeposition , after calcination , a porous double-layer structure was formed, which improved the catalytic performance and effectively delayed the penetration of industrial wastewater into the electrode. Compared with the Ti/Sb-SnO 2 electrode, the electrode life is increased by nearly 6 times, the phenol removal rate reaches 90.64 % (2000 mA/cm 2 , 1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 ), the oxygen evolution potential of 2.13 V, a current density of 0.096 A/cm 2 , a charge transfer resistance of 2.245 Ω. The results show that the porous structure is conducive to providing a larger specific surface area and contact area for the reaction, maximizing the utilization of catalytic active sites, shortens the mass transfer distance between the hydroxyl radicals and pollutants, increases the degradation rate, reduces the corrosion rate of the electrode materials, and improves electrode stability. The unique double-layer structure is obviously different from traditional electrodes, adding a layer of protective barrier, which provides a new idea for prolonging the life of electrodes. The electrode prepared in this study has a simple process, a greatly improved lifespan and an excellent energy utilization rate, which is suitable for industrial application.

N-containing organic wastewater is harmful to human health and ecosystem while its degradation remains a huge challenge for decarburization and denitrification simultaneously. In this paper, we proposed a new photoelectrochemical method of chlorine oxide radicals production to oxidize mixture wastewater of phenol and N-ammonia into N 2 and CO 2 . The chlorine oxide radicals were generated via a rapid reaction of HClO with hydroxyl radicals or chlorine free radicals on a synergistic dual anode, in which hydroxyl radicals and chlorine free radicals generated on WO 3 side, and HClO generated on Sb-SnO 2 side, respectively. Phenol degradation rate on WO 3 -Sb/SnO 2 was 2.54 and 4.79 times than that on WO 3 and Sb/SnO 2 . Meanwhile, N-ammonia removal rate on WO 3 -Sb/SnO 2 was 5.69 and 20 times greater than that on WO 3 and Sb/SnO 2 , respectively. The effects of potential, Cl − concentration and initial pH were examined and the optimal conditions were potential 2.0 V vs Ag/AgCl, 0.05 M NaCl, pH = 5. The free radical quenching experiments and electron-spin resonance (ESR) confirmed that chlorine oxide radicals played an important role in the degradation of N-ammonia and phenol. Reasonable pathways of phenol in the WO 3 -Sb/SnO 2 system were also proposed. This work provides an exhaustive, novel, environmental-friendly photoelectrochemical system for N-containing organic wastewater treatment.

Conductive powders comprised of coal gasification fine slag porous microbeads/antimony-doped tin oxide nanoparticles (Sb–SnO 2 /CM, ATCM) have been prepared via acid leaching and coating. The lowest powder volume resistivity of 2.6 × 10 3 Ω cm was obtained upon leaching in 20% HCl and coating with a 30 wt% solution of Sb–SnO 2 (pH = 1, Sn/Sb = 6:1). Subsequently, we prepared a 20 wt% ATCM/polypropylene (PP) composite with a volume resistivity of 4.93 × 10 9 Ω cm, tensile strength of 29.03 MPa, and thermal conductivity of 0.137 W/(m·K), which reached 0.187 W/(m·K) at a 70 wt% loading. When compared with several commercial conductive fillers , such as carbon black, graphene, Sb–SnO 2 , and Sb–SnO 2 @TiO 2 , 20 wt% ATCM/PP has been proven superior or comparable to most of its counterparts in terms of the improved antistatic properties, enhanced thermal conductivity (only lower than Sb–SnO 2 @TiO 2 ), and mechanical strength (equal to Sb–SnO 2 ). These good performances were found to be derived from the unique ATCM structure with Sb–SnO 2 nanoparticles deposited onto the mesopores and surface of CM. This structure prevents the agglomeration of Sb–SnO 2 and provides abundant conductive networks. ATCM also shows a decorative light brown color and low cost (15 USD/kg), which are favorable for industrial production. Our results lay a theoretical foundation for the future applications of ATCM.

Photoelectrocatalysis is a promising method for removing biorefractory organic pollutants. However, the inefficient utilization of light and electricity by photoanodes and the failure to effectively execute cathode functions typically lead to poor degradation performance. Therefore, in this study, a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system coupled with electro-activated persulfate (E-PS) was constructed using a 3D nanostructured PbO 2 /Sb-SnO 2 //blue-TiO 2 //WO 3 bifacial anode and a Mo-CuFeO 2 -modified carbon felt cathode. The results indicate that the bifacial anode could effectively implement electro-assisted photocatalysis on the irradiating side and electrocatalysis on the back side. This significantly accelerated acetaminophen degradation with a synergy index of 48.98 %. Additionally, the PEC/E-PS system was established by combining a bifacial anode with a persulfate-activated cathode, which promoted the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and increased the number of active species in the coupled system. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that Mo tended to dope the Fe sites and promote the adsorption of PS on Mo-CuFeO 2 , facilitating the continuous activation of persulfate. In the coupled system, the contribution order of different active species to acetaminophen degradation was h + > OH > SO 4 − > 1 O 2 > O 2 − . Their mutual conversion enabled the PEC/E-PS system to efficiently remove acetaminophen with a relatively high current efficiency (22.69 %) and low energy consumption (0.06 kWh⋅gCOD −1 ). The proposed PEC/E-PS system is an efficient and sustainable method for treating organic contaminants in wastewater.
