Tailoring the Broadband Emission in All-Inorganic Lead-Free 0D In-Based Halides through Sb3+ Doping

Xingwen Cheng,Renfu Li,Wei Zheng,Datao Tu,Xiaoying Shang,Zhongliang Gong,Jin Xu,Siyuan Han,Xueyuan Chen

All-inorganic lead-free metal halides doped with ns 2 -metal ions have shown great promise in optoelectronics and photovoltaics owing to their superior optical properties. Herein, a strategy is reported for tailoring the optical properties of 0D A 2 InX 5 ⋅H 2 O and A 3 InX 6 (A = Cs, Rb; X = Cl, Br) crystals via Sb 3+ doping, and the excited-state dynamics of Sb 3+ is unveiled through temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopies. Owing to the spatially confined 0D structure of the In-based halides, Sb 3+ ions experience a strong Jahn–Taller distortion on the excited state, which results in intense PL from Sb 3+ with a broad emission band and a large Stokes shift. Through the control of A cation and the octahedral unit, tunable Sb 3+ emissions (490−750 nm) with PL quantum yields up to 91.8% are achieved in these 0D In-based halides. These findings provide fundamental insights into the excited-state dynamics of Sb 3+ in 0D metal halides, thus laying a foundation for future design of luminescent lead-free 0D metal halides through ns 2 -metal doping towards versatile applications.

Sb3+–doped 0D Cs3GdCl6 microcrystals with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and high thermal quenching resistance for light-emitting application

Xiantian Liang,Wei Zhang,Yitong Shi,Wen Zhang,Hongyi Yang,Ping Huang,Lingyun Li,Qi Zhang,Wei Zheng,Xueyuan Chen

All-inorganic lead-free luminescent metal halides doped with main-group ns2-electron ions have attracted considerable interest in a variety of optoelectronic applications. However, they normally suffer from severe thermal quenching of photoluminescence (PL) due to aggravated nonradiative relaxation at high temperatures. Herein, we report a new class of luminescent materials based on 5s2-electron Sb3+–doped 0D Cs3GdCl6 microcrystals (MCs), which exhibit intense yellowish PL at 540 nm under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, in parallel with a broad bandwidth of 510 meV, a large Stokes shift of 190 nm, a near-unity PL quantum yield, and remarkable resistance against thermal quenching (I150°C = 82.4%). Mechanistic investigation unravels that the broadband emission originates from the spin-orbital allowed 3P1 → 1S0 transition of Sb3+ which experiences a dynamic Jahn–Teller distortion in the excited state. These properties facilitate Cs3GdCl6:Sb3+ MCs as an efficient yellowish phosphor for near-UV-converted white light-emitting diodes, demonstrating a high color-rendering index of 96.4 and excellent operational stability. This work provides not only fundamental insights into the excited-state dynamics of Sb3+ in Cs3GdCl6 MCs, but also a new way for the exploration of novel and highly emissive rare-earth halides through ns2-electron ion doping towards various light-emitting applications.

Self-trapped exciton to dopant energy transfer in Sb3+-doped Cs2ZrCl6 perovskite variants

Jun Zhou,Xiangyan Yun,Ruoyu Wang,Denghui Xu,Xiong Li

As a promising way to modulate the photoluminescence properties and stability of perovskites and perovskite variants, doping has attracted wide attention in the field of optical and optoelectronic applications. In this work, a series of all inorganic lead-free Sb3+-doped Cs2ZrCl6 vacancy-ordered perovskite variants were prepared by the hydrothermal method, and the Sb3+-doping leads to singlet and triplet state emissions, which are strongly dependent on the temperature and surrounding molecular environment. Furthermore, efficient energy transfer can be observed from self-trapped excitons (STEs) of [ZrCl6]2− octahedra to dopant Sb3+. Our results will shed light on the ns2 Sb3+-ion-doping-induced emissive mechanism and expand the understanding of the optoelectronic properties of the perovskite variant family.

High stability of robust anti-thermal-quenching lead-free double perovskite crystals for optoelectronic devices and high-performance fibers

Xiaoman Zhang,Yehua Zheng,Kun Nie,Xiaodong Zhang,Xiuqiang Duan,Ziyao Hu,Ming Yang,Lefu Mei,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang,Mingquan Li,Xiaoxue Ma

Lead-free double perovskites are environmentally friendly, and their good photoelectric efficiency has received widespread attention. However, the stability and efficiency of lead-free perovskites need to be further improved to meet the growing application needs. In this study, thermally quenched perovskite (Cs2NaHoCl6) crystals (PCs) were successfully synthesized by co-precipitation. By doping with Sb3+, the excitation wavelength of the original perovskite increased significantly to 250–360 nm, and the emission wavelength of the original perovskite also increased significantly to 660 nm. Cs2NaHoCl6:Sb3+ PCs are made of red and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for general lighting applications. In addition, Cs2NaHoCl6:Sb3+ PCs are made into flexible luminescent fibers with aramid/polyphenylene sulfide (ACFs/PPS) composite fibers. Based on the good thermal quenching resistance of Cs2NaHoCl6:Sb3+ PCs, the flexible luminescent fibers showed excellent high-temperature luminescence stability. At 125 °C, flexible luminescent fibers retained 99.8% of the original luminescence intensity; at 250 °C, they retained 75.6% of the original. These flexible luminescent fibers have the potential to be used in fluorescence detection in high-temperature environments. In summary, this study used a simple method to prepare lead-free perovskites with good optical properties and stability, expanding the application of perovskites in the field of fibers.

Multimodal Luminescent Low-Dimension Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ Crystals for White Light-Emitting Diodes and Information Encryption

Zhilin Li,Qiaoqiao Li,Mengyan Cao,Zhihui Rao,Xinyu Shi,Liujiang Zhou,Xiujian Zhao,Xiao Gong

Low-dimension perovskite materials have attracted wide attention due to their excellent optical properties and stability. Herein, Sb3+-doped Cs2ZrCl6 crystals are synthesized by a coprecipitation method in which Sb3+ ions partially replace Zr4+ ions. The Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ powder shows blue and orange–red emissions under a 254 and 365 nm light, respectively, due to the [ZrCl6]2– octahedron and [SbCl6]3– octahedron. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ (x = 0.1) crystals is up to 52.5%. According to experimental and computational results, the emission mechanism of the Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ crystals is proposed. On the one hand, a wide blue emission with a large Stokes shift is caused by the self-trapping excitons of [ZrCl6]2– octahedra under a 260 nm excitation. On the other hand, the luminescence mechanism of [SbCl6]3– octahedron is divided into two parts: 1P1 → 1S0 (490 nm) and 3P1 → 1S0 (625 nm). The broad-band emission, high PLQY, and excellent stability endow the Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ powders with the potential for the fabrication of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). A WLED device is fabricated using a commercial 310 nm NUV chip, which shows a high color rendering index of 89.7 and a correlated color temperature of 5333 K. In addition, the synthesized Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ crystals can be also successfully used for information encryption. Our work will provide a deep understanding of the photophysical properties of Sb3+-doped perovskites and facilitate the development of Cs2ZrCl6:xSb3+ crystals in encrypting multilevel optical codes and WLEDs.

Tunable dual-emission of Sb3+, Ho3+ Co-doped Cs2NaScCl6 single crystals for light-emitting diodes

Qingyong Qin,Yu Liu,Ge Gao,Zhaoqiong Chen,Zejiang Gao,Li Chen,Xianci Zhong,Bingsuo Zou

Lead-free halide double perovskites are considered as one of the most promising materials in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), due to their environmental friendliness and chemical stability. However, the extremely low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of self-trapped excitons (STEs) emission from lead-free halide double perovskites impedes their applications. Herein, Sb3+ ions were doped into rare-earth-based double perovskite Cs2NaScCl6 single crystals (SCs), resulting in a large enhancement of PLQY from 12.57% to 87.37%. Moreover, by co-doping Sb3+ and Ho3+ into Cs2NaScCl6 SCs, the emission color can be tuned from blue to red, due to an efficient energy transfer from STEs to Ho3+ ions. Finally, the synthesized sample was used in multicolor LED, which exhibited excellent stability and optical properties. This work not only provides a new strategy for improving the optical properties of Cs2NaScCl6 SCs, but also suggests its potential application in multicolor LEDs.

A new class of luminescent nanoprobes based on main-group Sb3+ emitters

Zhang Chunguang,Zhang Meiran,Zheng Wei,Wei Jiaojiao,Wang Shiteng,Huang Ping,Cheng Xingwen,Dai Tao,Chen Zhuo,Chen Xueyuan

Inorganic luminescent nanocrystals (NCs) doped with main-group ns 2 -metal ions have evoked tremendous interest in many technological fields owing to their superior optical properties. Herein, we report a new class of luminescent nanoprobes based on 5s 2 -metal Sb 3+ -doped CaS NCs that are excitable by using a near ultraviolet light-emitting diode. The optical properties and excited-state dynamics of Sb 3+ in CaS NCs are comprehensively surveyed through temperature-dependent steady-state and transient photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. Owing to the strong electron-phonon coupling of Sb 3+ in CaS NCs, Sb 3+ ions experience a dynamic Jahn-Taller distortion on the excited state, which results in bright green PL of Sb 3+ with a broad emission band, a large Stokes shift, and a high PL quantum yield up to 17.3%. By taking advantage of the intense PL of Sb 3+ , we show in proof-of-concept experiments the application of biotinylated CaS:Sb 3+ NCs as sensitive luminescent nanoprobes for biotin receptor-targeted cancer cell imaging and zebrafish imaging with a high imaging contrast. These findings provide fundamental insights into the excited-state dynamics of Sb 3+ in CaS NCs, thus laying a foundation for future design of novel and versatile luminescent nanoprobes via main-group ns 2 -metal doping.

Dual-emission mechanism for tunable white light emission from an economical OIHMH crystal of (TEA)2ZnCl4:Sb3+

Xi Chen,Yuexiao Pan,Yihong Ding,Jun Lin,Liyi Li,Wenxia Zhang

The exploration of eco-friendly luminescent materials has been a focal point in the field of materials science, particularly with the increasing demand for sustainable lighting solutions. This study introduces a novel organic–inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIHMH) single crystal (TEA) 2 ZnCl 4 with a zero-dimensional (0D) architecture. Upon doping Sb 3+ ions, (TEA) 2 ZnCl 4 demonstrated a broadband emission spanning 400–750 nm with photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 96 %, encompassing the entire visible spectrum. Excitation at 310–365 nm yielded dual emissions peaking at 474 nm and 604 nm, characterized by ns and μs lifetimes respectively. The emission mechanism is attributed to the coexistence of singlet and triplet excitons due to the unique crystal field environment induced by Sb 3+ doping. The 0D OIHMH material (TEA) 2 ZnCl 4 :Sb 3+ , featuring broad emission spectra and temperature-responsive PL is highly desirable for a wide range of applications

Realizing efficient broadband near-infrared emission under blue light excitation in Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional organic tin(IV)-based metal halides via coordination structure modulation

Bao Ke,Hui Peng,Yongqi Yang,Chengzhi Yang,Shangfei Yao,Arfan Bukhtiar,Qilin Wei,Jialong Zhao,Bingsuo Zou

Realizing Sb3+-activated efficient broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission under blue light excitation remains a significant challenge in lead-free metal halides. To overcome the above difficulties, a coordination structure modulation strategy was adopted, and the broadband NIR emission under blue light excitation was achieved in Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional (0D) organic tin(IV) bromide. Compared to the weak visible light emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 2.4% for pure (TBP)2SbBr5 (TBP = tetrabutylphosphonium), Sb3+-doped (TBP)2SnBr6 exhibits an efficient broadband NIR emission band at 705 nm with a PLQY of 33.2% upon 452 nm excitation, which stems from self-trapped exciton emission. Combined with experiments and theoretical calculations, we find that the large excited-state lattice distortion degree compared to the ground state and the narrow bandgap are dominant reasons for Sb3+-doped (TBP)2SnBr6 showing efficient NIR emission under blue light excitation. Specifically, Sb3+-doped (TBP)2SnBr6 also has excellent anti-water stability, existing stably in water for more than 4 hours while maintaining a high luminous efficiency. Based on the excellent stability and unique optical properties of Sb3+-doped (TBP)2SnBr6, a high-performance NIR light-emitting diode (LED) was fabricated by combining Sb3+-doped (TBP)2SnBr6 with a commercial blue LED chip, and its application in night vision was demonstrated.

Dual-Response Photoluminescence of Rare Earth-Based Halide Double Perovskite

Xianhe Gao,Tao Cui,Ruigang Liu,Jie Liu,Shigui Zhu,Hao Song,Yang Wei,Weiqiu Kang,Xiumei Chen,Ze Yuan,Hongbo Li,Xiaoji Xie

Sb3+-doped rare-earth halide double perovskites (REDPs) have emerged as a novel class of optical and optoelectronic materials for diverse applications because of the enhanced optical properties induced by Sb3+ doping. However, the responsive luminescence features of Sb3+-doped REDPs, especially dual and multi-responsive luminescence, are rarely discovered. Herein, we show that Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 with blue and yellow-green emission centers exhibits both the excitation wavelength and temperature-responsive luminescence. Specifically, the dual emission centers of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 exhibit reverse responses to temperature, changing the emission color of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 as the temperature increases from 77 to 440 K. Our studies show that the observed dual-response luminescence should be attributed to the Sb3+ doping-enhanced responsive luminescence of pristine Cs2NaScCl6. The dual-response luminescence enables facile luminescence tuning of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 with the assistance of co-doping with Tb3+ and Mn2+ and gives Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 potential for applications including information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, light-emitting diodes, and temperature sensing.

Excitation-Dependent Emission in Sb3+-Doped All-Inorganic Rare-Earth Double Perovskites for Anticounterfeiting Applications

Wenzhi Li,Yuxi Wang,Hong Yin,Junsheng Chen,Keli Han,Feng Liu,Ruiling Zhang

Achieving high-efficiency tunable emission in a single phosphor remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a series of Sb3+-doped all-inorganic double perovskites, Sb3+:Cs2NaScCl6, with efficient excitation-dependent emission. In 0.5%Sb3+:Cs2NaScCl6, strong blue emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 85% is obtained under 265 nm light irradiation, which turns into bright neutral white light with a PLQY of 56% when excited at 303 nm. Spectroscopic and computational investigations were performed to reveal the mechanism of this excitation-dependent emission. Sb3+ doping induces two different excitation channels: the internal transition of Sb3+: 5s2 → 5s5p and the electron transfer transition of Sb3+: 5s → Sc3+ 3d. The former one generates excited Sb3+ ions, which can undergo efficient energy transfer to populate the host self-trapped exciton (STE) state, yielding enhanced blue emission. The latter one leads to the formation of a new STE state with the hole localized on Sb3+ and the electron delocalized on the nearest Sc3+, which accounts for the newly exhibited low-energy emission. The difference in the excitation pathways of the two emitting STE states results in the highly efficient excitation-dependent emission, making the doped systems promising anticounterfeiting materials.

Phase transition behavior enabling reversible luminescence in the novel Sb3+ doped double perovskite Cs2KInCl6 for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications

Maohao Yang,Wanyin Ge,Yao Guo,Jianxin Li,Yongxiang Li

With the continuous advancement of counterfeiting technologies, traditional static anti-counterfeiting systems have exhibited inherent security vulnerabilities, urgently necessitating the development of novel intelligent anti-counterfeiting materials with multi-stimulus responsive mechanisms. This study developed a solvent evaporation crystallization method to successfully synthesize a novel lead-free halide double perovskite (LHDPs) Cs 2 KInCl 6 : Sb 3+ , which exhibits multi-color intelligent luminescence. By precisely controlling humidity and temperature, Cs 2 KInCl 6 : Sb 3+ can undergo reversible luminescence transitions from "green → yellow (Cs 2 InCl 5 (H 2 O): Sb 3+ ) → green". The unique stimulus-responsive behavior originates from the material's high sensitivity to water molecule adsorption/desorption, making it applicable for information encryption systems. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Sb 3+ -doped introduces intermediate energy levels, reducing the bandgaps of Cs 2 InCl 5 (H 2 O), Cs 3 In 2 Cl 9 , and Cs 2 KInCl 6 , which enhances their light absorption and emission properties. Moreover, LHDPs Cs 2 KInCl 6 : Sb 3+ maintain 93 % of their initial luminescence intensity at high temperatures (403 K), demonstrating excellent thermal stability. This study elucidates the luminescence regulation mechanism of Sb 3+ -doped LHDPs and establishes a dynamic color switching model ("structural phase transition-optical response"), providing theoretical support for design next-generation smart anti-counterfeiting materials and developing of high-temperature stable luminescent devices.
