Hydrophobic SiO₂ aerogels with highly uniform skeletons and excellent mechanical properties were synthesized without any surfactant. Methyltriethoxysilane served as the silicon source, while tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) functioned simultaneously as an alkaline catalyst and a solubilizing agent. By simply tuning the TMAOH concentration, the gel network could be precisely engineered. After supercritical drying, the aerogel exhibited a water contact angle of 163.6°, a specific surface area of 704 m² g⁻¹ , and a low thermal conductivity of 19.2 mW (m K)⁻¹ . Its compressive stress reached 0.302 MPa at 50 % strain. Solvent exchange of the wet gel with n-heptane enabled crack-free monoliths to be dried under ambient pressure. For the optimal formulation, the compressive stress further increased to 4.355 MPa at 60 % strain. The straightforward synthesis, superior performance, and the ability to dry the aerogel at ambient pressure without any additional surface modification make this material highly attractive for large-scale thermal-insulation applications. Moreover, exploiting the solubilizing capacity of TMAOH to suppress phase separation during gelation provides a valuable strategy for the preparation of hydrophobic SiO₂ aerogels.

Carbon layer acts as a thermal/reaction buffer to regulate prelithiation kinetics. • In-situ formed LixSiOy provide mechanical support and facilitate Li+ transport. • Carbon layer and LixSiOy synergy stabilize the interface structure of SiO@C/Li. • Carbon-buffered prelithiation builds SiO@C/Li anode with high ICE and good cycling. Silicon monoxide (SiO) is regarded as a high-capacity lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode. However, the severe volume expansion and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) hinder its practical deployment. Herein, we report a two-step strategy combining chemical vapor deposition (CVD) carbon coating and LiH-mediated solid-phase prelithiation to regulate the phase evolution and grain growth of SiO. Comprehensive characterizations including XRD, 29 Si NMR, and HR-TEM confirm the successful fabrication of the SiO@C/Li composite with a well-controlled microstructure. The pre-deposited uniform amorphous carbon layer not only enhances electrical conductivity and buffers volume expansion but also acts as a reaction regulator to prevent localized overheating and grain coarsening during high-temperature prelithiation. In-situ formed lithium silicate phases during prelithiation further provide structural reinforcement and fast Li + transport pathways. The uniform carbon layer and in-situ formed lithium silicate phases synergistically promote a robust, LiF-rich SEI layer, effectively lowering interfacial charge-transfer resistance. The optimized SiO@C/Li electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 1418.5 mAh g -1 with an ICE of 91.38%. When paired with a commercial NCM811 cathode in a full cell, the cell exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 193.8 mAh g -1 and retains a capacity of 102.4mAh g -1 after 150 cycles at 0.5C. This work demonstrates that the synergistic design of carbon coating and controlled prelithiation is an effective approach to advance the practical application of SiO-based anodes. SiO(silicon monoxide) anode have received widespread attention owing to the great potential for the development of modern society. Although SiO has a large Li capacity, the short cycle life, poor rate capability and low coulombic efficiency limits its wide applications. In this paper, we adopt hydrothermal mixing and sintering process to form a ball milling bm-SiO based, Ni doped and rGO recombined composite (bm-SiO/Ni/rGO) anode material , which shows excellent cycle performance with the initial columbic efficiency of 65%, the discharge capacity of 720 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 current density after 100 cycles and good rate performance. The improvement of electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the interaction effects of the limited damage of volume change, the open structure of reduced graphene oxide, and the cycle stability with the Ni doping.

Silicon is regarded as the most promising candidate for the next-generation anode materials , because of its high specific capacity and wide availability. However, silicon anode materials suffer from large volume change during the charging/discharging processes, which leads to a too fast capacity degradation. To alleviate the volume change and capacity degradation, preforming pore structure in silicon anode materials is the most frequently adopted strategy. The pores are usually formed either by using templates or through selective etching, which involves complicated preparation process and consumes hazard chemicals . Here, we propose a nanostructured silicon anode derived from low-cost raw materials without the use of templates. The composite is composed of dense active cores and fluffy cocoon-like buffer layer . The buffer layer is a network of carbon nanobelts , which accommodates the volume change and maintains the electrical contact during the charging/discharging processes. As a result, the porous composite with the buffer layer displays a high cyclability, with a capacity retention of 104% after 100 cycles, while the dense sample without the buffer layer has a capacity retention of only 36%. Moreover, the process is green, effective and scalable, which could promote the application of silicon based anode materials.

The immobilization of enzyme is an important biotechnology in industry. Enzyme immobilization by nanomaterials has attracted interest of researchers due to potentially promising application. Many enzymes had been successfully immobilized by different nanomaterials. In this work, β-glucosidase was immobilized by SiO 2 nanoparticles (nano-SiO 2 ) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), then the enzymatic properties of them were also compared. The nano-SiO 2 @β-glucosidase and the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 achieved immobilization yield of 58.5% and 23.0%, respectively. Optimal temperature of the free β-glucosidase, nano-SiO 2 @β-glucosidase and the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 were around 50 °C. Both free β-glucosidase and nano-SiO 2 @β-glucosidase showed maximal catalytic activity at pH 6.0, while the optimal pH of the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 was 5.4 roughly. The nano-SiO 2 @β-glucosidase exhibited similar pH stability and thermal stability to those of the free β-glucosidase, and the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 improved pH stability greatly. Moreover, after the treatment of trypsin for 4 h at 37 °C, the residual activities of the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 was the highest that retained 94%, which provided huge potential for the application of the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 in industry. Furthermore, the nano-SiO 2 @β-glucosidase and the β-glucosidase@ZIF-8 can be reused for 5 cycles with 87.5% and 88.7% residual activity, respectively.

The issue of cathode passivation during cycling resulting in rapid capacity fading and premature battery death is a major challenge that hinders the applications of lithium–oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries. Here, a facile strategy of introducing a functional separator based on flexible amination SiO 2 /TiO 2 inorganic woven film (STON WF) is proposed to suppress the cathode passivation problem. The by-products, i.e. HCOOLi, CH 3 COOLi and Li 2 CO 3 can be selectively adsorbed on the STON WF separator preferably compared with the cathode and further proved by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Thus, benefiting from the separator, the Li–O 2 cells with super P carbon and catalyst-free cathode show enhanced electrochemical performance (5645 mA h g −1 at a current density of 200 mA g −1 ), good rate capability (discharge voltage of 2.43 V at a current density of 1.5 A g −1 ) and especially superior cycle stability up to 268 cycles. These findings present a promising approach to prevent the premature battery death.

Porous silicon monoxide (p-SiO) is one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because it possesses high theoretical capacity and small volume expansion. Traditionally, SiO is prepared at 1200 °C, which restrains the application of SiO materials due to its high consumption of energy. Herein, a low-temperature synthesis process of p-SiO at 650 °C is developed from a controllable magnesiothermic reduction of porous silica . Compared with normally reduced solid silica (SiO 2 @SiO), p-SiO is fabricated more easily from porous SiO 2 due to the improved contact between SiO 2 and Mg atom. Moreover, high porosity of p-SiO facilitates the growth of carbon shell, making p-SiO@C with remarkable electrochemical properties . The reversible capacity for p-SiO@C (839.6 mA h g −1 , at 500 mA g −1 ) is about two times that for SiO 2 @SiO@C (426.4 mA h g −1 , at 500 mA g −1 ) after 110 cycles, and the synergetic properties of p-SiO@C further presents good cycling stability (777.1 mA h g −1 , at 500 mA g −1 after 300 cycles) and excellent rate capability (977 mA h g −1 , at 1000 mA g −1 ). The low-temperature fabrication of p-SiO followed by carbonization is promoting for practical application in high-performance Si-based lithium-ion battery.

Monodisperse SiO 2 nanospheres (∼50–200 nm) were synthesized via a modified Stöber method involving hydrolysis and condensation reactions to generate SiO 2 templates. The SiO 2 surface bears negative charges through silanol (Si OH) groups, while positively charged ammonium ions (NH 4 + ) from the carbon precursor electrostatically self-assemble onto the SiO 2 surface, forming organic-coated SiO 2 nanospheres. Subsequent high temperature sintering under an argon atmosphere yields SiO 2 @C composite nanospheres. TEM and XPS confirm the spherical morphology, narrow size distribution, and the presence of a graphitized carbon layer. When applied as fingerprint developing powders on typical forensic substrates knife blades, rusted iron pieces and unpolished silicon wafer, the powders rapidly adsorb fingerprint residues and emit weak fluorescence under multi-band illumination, markedly enhancing the contrast of ridge details. The inherent chemical inertness and low cost of SiO 2 , combined with the optical scattering and fluorescence properties of the carbon coating, endow these nanocomposite powders with superior latent fingerprint visualization performance across diverse substrates, offering a highly efficient and environmentally friendly material for forensic evidence collection.

Silicon dioxide (SiO₂), an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), faces critical challenges such as irreversible phase transitions, severe volume expansion, and interfacial side reactions, leading to low initial Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel design of SnO₂-based SiO₂ nanotubes composites (SiO₂/SnO₂) synthesized using ammonium tartrate as a water-soluble template. The hollow tubular structure effectively accommodates volume changes of SiO 2 during lithiation/delithiation, while SnO₂ component can contribute lithium storage capacity and improve the electrochemical reaction kinetics. The optimized SiO₂/SnO₂ composite exhibits a high discharge capacity of 778.07 mAh g⁻ 1 with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 98% after 200 cycles at 1 A g⁻ 1 . Additionally, it demonstrates excellent rate capability, achieving 715.6 mAh g⁻ 1 at 1 A g⁻ 1 and recovering to 927.9 mAh g⁻ 1 when the current density returns to 0.1 A g⁻ 1 . The synergistic combination of structural engineering and SnO₂ functionality not only mitigates mechanical degradation but also enhances reaction kinetics. This work provides a scalable strategy for developing high-performance anode materials with improved energy density and long-term cyclability for advanced LIBs.

The scattering effect plays an important role in improving the optical performance of the quantum dot (QD) white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). A majority of the previous studies have focused on the planar packaging structure only with respect to total internal reflection (TIR). In this study, SiO2 nanoparticles are incorporated into QD-silicone encapsulation of LEDs with semi-spherical lens packaging (SSLP) to exploit their scattering effect. The results show that the radiant efficacy (31.35%@100 mA) and luminous efficacy (87.56 lm/W@100 mA) of QD white LEDs can be optimized using SiO2 nanoparticle concentration (0.1 wt%) and that they increase by 5.04% and 11.08%, respectively, as compared to the conventional structure. A comprehensive ray-tracing simulation validates that the nanoparticles in the SSLP structure lead to severe loss of chip light. On the contrary, the fluorescence light increases due to the enhancement of conversion by QDs. The transmission electron microscopy images and the finite-difference time-domain simulation have been introduced to investigate the surface adsorption of SiO2 nanoparticle. This study indicates that SiO2 incorporation is an effective method to improve the efficiency of QD white LEDs, and provides a better understanding on the scattering effect based on TIR, color conversion, and surface adsorption.

Structural colors are generated by some different mechanisms. Here, we prepared a kind of large-area structural color films using Cu₂O@SiO₂ microsphere as the coloring units. The film is prepared by infusing PDMS into a disordered structural template assembled from Cu₂O@SiO₂ microsphere, followed by thermal curing and peeling. The disordered Cu₂O@SiO₂ thin layers embedded in the film are obtained by a spraying method, which can generate vivid noniridescent structural colors due to the strong Mie scattering of Cu₂O@SiO₂ microsphere. Meanwhile, Cu₂O@SiO₂-polydimethylsiloxane composite films show excellent chemical stability and mechanical properties. Dynamic tuning of the structural color is achieved by covering the film surface with a liquid layer, which modulates the interfacial medium environment and alters the relative refractive index contrast between the medium and the scattering units. Notably, when applied as structural color writing paper, the film demonstrates good reversible writing and erasing performance. The simple color-changing mechanism and ease of large-area fabrication make it a promising candidate for rewritable colored paper applications.
