Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance Achieved in SnTe via the Synergy of Valence Band Regulation and Fermi Level Modulation

Xiao Xu,Juan Cui,Liangwei Fu,Yi Huang,Yong Yu,Yi Zhou,Di Wu,Jiaqing He

SnTe is deemed a promising mid-temperature thermoelectric material for low toxicity, low cost, and decent performance. Sole doping/alloying on Sn sites was reported to result in either modified band alignment or reduced lattice thermal conductivity, thus contributing to an enhanced overall thermoelectric figure of merit. However, this strategy alone is always unable to take full use of the material’s advantage, especially considering that it simultaneously pushes the hole concentration off the optimal range. In this work, we adopted a two-step approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of SnTe in order to overcome the limitation. First, Mn was alloyed into Sn sites to increase the density of state effective mass of SnTe by regulating the valence bands; the Fermi level was further regulated by iodine doping, guided by a refined two-band model. Additionally, the lattice thermal conductivity was also suppressed by the microstructure optimizing via Mn doping and additional phonon scattering at ITe mass/strain fluctuation. As a result, a high ZT of 1.4 at 873 K was achieved for Sn0.91Mn0.09Te0.99I0.01. This study provides a way to refine the single doping stratagem used in other thermoelectric materials.

Thermoelectric Performance of Rapidly Microwave-Synthesized α-MgAgSb with SnTe Nanoinclusions

Jiwu Xin,Junyou Yang,Sihui Li,Abdul Basit,Bingyang Sun,Suwei Li,Qiang Long,Xin Li,Ying Chen,Qinghui Jiang

α-MgAgSb (α-MAS) has recently been discovered to be a promising p-type thermoelectric material owing to its earth-abundant and nontoxic nature. However, there are two main disadvantages hindered the large-scale application of α-MAS, one is the single α-MAS phase prepared by conventional method requires for an extended period of time, and the other is the severely bipolar effect thus poor electric properties. In this scenario, we have presented an effective approach typified by SnTe nanocompositing to significantly enhance the thermoelectric performance of the rapidly microwave-synthesized α-MAS system. Specifically, the pure α-MAS compound was first produced by using a rapidly microwave synthesis. After the initial preparation, high-quality SnTe nanoparticles fabricated by a facile solvothermal method were incorporated into the microwave-synthesized α-MAS matrix. It is deserve to be mentioned that the rapidly microwave synthesis purifies the single α-MAS phase and allows the preparative time to be diminished from over 2 weeks to as little as 5 days. Moreover, the severe bipolar effect of pristine α-MAS has been retarded effectively by the following step typified by compositing SnTe nanoinclusions, leading to a large Seebeck coefficient, thus significantly enhanced a power factor in α-MAS/SnTe-composited system. Concurrently, the lattice thermal conductivity has also been greatly reduced because of the extra phonon scattering because of the multiscale hierarchical architecture (e.g., SnTe nanostructures, high-density stacking faults, and elastic strain fields). Eventually, an enhanced figure of merit ZT of ∼1 at 548 K, which increases by ∼53% compared with pristine α-MAS, has been achieved in the 3 at % SnTe-composited sample. This work impels the potential application of the α-MAS thermoelectric material as a robust candidate for a waste heat recovery below 573 K.

Ultra-Low Lattice Thermal Conductivity Enables High Thermoelectric Properties in Cu and Y Codoped SnTe via Multi-Scale Composite Nanostructures

Kang Lei,Haiming Huang,Xu Jia Liu,Weiliang Wang,Kai Guo,Ren Kui Zheng,Han Li

The eco-friendly thermoelectric material SnTe has recently gained immense attention due to its excellent thermoelectric properties and potential. However, its thermoelectric properties are limited by the inherent high carrier concentration (low Seebeck coefficient) and high thermal conductivity. Herein, we further introduce rare-earth element Y on top of the conventional Cu alloying to more effectively modulate its microstructure and thermal transport properties. The experimental results reveal that Y doping gives rise to band convergence, endowing Sn1–xYxTe-5%Cu2Te with an increased power factor of ∼22.14 μW cm–1 K–2. Meanwhile, the introduced abundant Y/Y2Te3 multiscale composite nanostructures in the matrix greatly enhance phonon scattering, resulting in an ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.43 W m–1 K–1. Consequently, these combined effects resulted in a peak ZT value of 1.27 at 823 K in Sn0.97Y0.03Te-5%Cu2Te. An enhancement of nearly 217% is achieved compared to pristine SnTe, which greatly improves the thermoelectric properties of SnTe-based materials.

Thermoelectric performance of nanostructured In/Pb codoped SnTe with band convergence and resonant level prepared via a green and facile hydrothermal method

Wenqi Lu,Tiantian He,Shuang Li,Xinru Zuo,Yao Zheng,Xunuo Lou,Jian Zhang,Di Li,Jizi Liu,Guodong Tang

SnTe is considered as a promising alternative to the conventional high-performance thermoelectric material PbTe, which inspired the thermoelectric community for a while. Here, we design a green, facile and low-energy-intensity hydrothermal route without involving any toxic or unstable chemicals to fabricate SnTe-based thermoelectric materials. Ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced thermoelectric performance are achieved via the combination of band engineering and nanostructuring. Enhanced Seebeck coefficient and power factor are induced by converging the band structure and creating resonant levels due to Pb and In doping. More importantly, due to the reduced grain sizes, nanoparticles, and dual-atom point defect scattering, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity was obtained in the bulk samples fabricated by the hydrothermal route. Benefiting from the enhanced power factor and significantly reduced thermal conductivity, the peak ZT is enhanced to ∼0.7 in In/Pb codoped SnTe, a 60% improvement over pure SnTe.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Cu-Doped SnTe by Reducing the Lattice Thermal Conductivity

Zhengshuai Cao,Mu Li,Li Shan,Mingshang Liu,Wenming Li

SnTe is an environmentally friendly and promising alternative thermoelectric material in contrast to harmful PbTe. However, the long-lasting high lattice thermal conductivity significantly inhibits the further enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Herein, this study proposed a strategy of solvothermal copper doping to considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by introducing multiscale hierarchical structures. The structural and morphological characterizations indicate that Cu was doped as interstitial atoms and secondary-phase Cu1.80Te. Simultaneously, this study reveals that Cu1.80Te and the SnTe matrix stem from nanoparticles and octahedral structures, respectively. In the sintered bulks, phonon scattering was significantly increased owing to the abundant micro/nanopores, Cu1.80Te nanoprecipitates, grain boundaries of SnTe, and phase boundaries between Cu1.80Te and SnTe. The increased phonon scattering leads to a lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.36 W m–1 K–1 at 773 K, which is lower than that of pristine SnTe. Benefiting from this substantially decreased thermal conductivity, a ZT value of ∼0.91 was achieved in Sn0.98Cu0.02Te. The enhancement is ∼300% over pristine SnTe. This work provides an effective method to fabricate high-performance energy-effective SnTe-based thermoelectric materials.

Thiol–Amine Complexes for the Synthesis and Surface Engineering of SnTe Nanomaterials toward High Thermoelectric Performance

Weite Meng,Lixiang Xu,Shaoqing Lu,Mingquan Li,Mengyao Li,Yu Zhang,Qingyue Wang,Wen-Jun Wang,Siqi Huo,Miguel A. Bañares,Marisol Martin-Gonzalez,Maria Ibáñez,Andreu Cabot,Min Hong,Yu Liu,Khak Ho Lim

SnTe has attracted significant research interest as a lead-free alternative to PbTe; however, its intrinsically high hole concentration results in an undesirably low Seebeck coefficient and elevated electronic thermal conductivity, thus significantly limiting its thermoelectric (TE) performance. Herein, we present a cost-effective, binary thiol-amine-mediated colloidal synthesis method to synthesize Bi-doped SnTe nanoparticles, eliminating the use of tri-n-octylphosphine-based precursors. The introduction of an electron-rich Bi dopant reduces the hole concentration and increases the Seebeck coefficient. Furthermore, post-synthetic surface treatment with chalcogenidocadmate complexes promotes atomic interdiffusion during annealing and consolidation, leading to compositional redistribution and modulation of the electronic band structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that co-modification via Bi doping and CdSe-derived chalcogen incorporation reduces the energy offset at the valence band maxima from 0.30 eV to 0.10 eV, thereby enhancing valence band degeneracy. The synergistic structural and electronic band structure modulations produce an SnTe-based material with a record high power factor of 2.1 mW m–1 K–2 at 900 K, a maximum TE figure of merit (zT) of 1.2, and a promising theoretical conversion efficiency of 8.3%. This study reports a versatile and scalable colloidal synthesis strategy that integrates hierarchical structural modulation with electronic band engineering, offering a synergistic route to significantly enhance the TE performance.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of In-doped and AgCuTe-alloyed SnTe through band engineering and endotaxial nanostructures

Panpan Peng,Chao Wang,Lanwei Li,Shuyao Li,Jing Chen,Pengya Fan,Rui Du,Haotian Si,Zhenxiang Cheng,Jianli Wang

Endotaxial nanostructures can reduce lattice thermal conductivity through enhancing phonon scattering without affecting electrical transport, leading to a high thermoelectric performance. On the other hand, band engineering can enhance electrical transport by improving the Seebeck coefficient through valence band convergence and the resonance level. In this paper, the synergistic effect of band engineering and endotaxial nanostructures was implemented in SnTe thermoelectric materials by alloying with AgCuTe and doping with Indium. The positron annihilation lifetime spectra show that the vacancy concentration in SnTe was reduced after alloying with AgCuTe, which led to a decreasing hole concentration and improved carrier mobility. Additionally, the diffusion of Ag in the matrix during the preparation can facilitate valence band convergence. Therefore, the power factor of SnTe is greatly increased to 18 μW cm−1 K−2 at 800 K, which can be further increased to 21.4 μW cm−1 K−2 at 800 K after In doping due to resonance level formation. Meanwhile, Cu2Te endotaxial nanostructures also can be observed in the TEM image after SnTe alloying with AgCuTe. So, the lattice thermal conductivity significantly reduced to 0.93 W m−1 K −1 in In-doped and AgCuTe-alloyed SnTe. Finally, we obtain an enhanced ZT value of 1.14 in Sn1.02In0.01Te–1%AgCuTe at 800 K.

Spatially confined construction of heterostructured SnSe/SnTe nanodots in porous carbon fibers with high-level N-doping for superior sodium storage

Rong Hua,Hongbao Li,Jun Zheng,Rui Wang,Quanwei Ma,Tengfei Zhou,Longhai Zhang,Hongwei Kang,Chaofeng Zhang,Yang Zheng

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as a promising candidate to supersede lithium ion batteries , however, the lack of suitable electrode materials for efficient Na-storage still hinders its practical use. Hence, this work reports a general and effective way to in-situ construction of heterostructured SnSe/SnTe nanodots encapsulated in nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon matrix (SnSe/SnTe@N-CNFs). In such unique architecture, the porous N-CNFs matrix cannot only provide high electronic/ion conductivity but also alleviate the volume change of SnSe and SnTe, leading to rapid kinetics and robust structure, whereas the ultrasmall SnSe/SnTe heterostructure with built-in interfacial driving force can promote charge transfer kinetics. Meanwhile, the abundant defective sites induced from high-level N-doping is beneficial to Na + storage. Besides, the formed Sn–C, Se–C, and Te–C bonds can improve the interfacial interaction between SnSe/SnTe and N-CNFs, thus enhancing electronic conductivity , suppressing the aggregation and detachment of active components, and ensuring rapid kinetics and structural integrity. When evaluated as an anode for SIBs, the as-prepared SnSe/SnTe@N-CNFs exhibits high reversible capacity, remarkable cycling stability, and superior rate capability. This work can offer an efficient and universal strategy for designing advanced anode materials with exceptional performance.

Selective and smart dual-channel colorimetric sulfur ion sensing readout platform

Yue Qu,Tao Chen,Yuanhong Xu

It is in urgent to develop a facile sulfur ion (S 2- ) detection platform with good selectivity, sensitivity and portability, since the abnormal concentration of S 2- poses a serious threat to human health and environment. Nanozymes are expected as promising colorimetric probe for visual assays, but the selectivity is challenged since the mostly typical nanozymes are oxidoreductase-like ones while various analytes possess equivalent redox capacity. Herein, one-platform-two-channels detection method with both excellent selectivity and sensitivity was constructed based on the bifunctions of tin telluride (SnTe) nanobelts. On one hand, SnTe and S 2- can react rapidly to form a special brown product SnS to assure the selectivity; On the other hand, SnTe with peroxidase-like activity can oxidize 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 , while strong reducing S 2- could inversely convert the solution from blue to colorless and then brown, enabling a wider range of S 2- detection (10 nM-900 μM) and low detection limit of 7.1 nM. In addition, this detection platform could still show excellent specificity against 19 other interfering substances in sulfur soaps with complex components. With the assistance of the color-to-value conversion function of a smartphone, a portable signal reading-out platform was established, which can successfully achieve the accurate visualization of the S 2− in 10 min

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of orientated and defected SnTe

Sihui Li,Jiwu Xin,Wang Li,Yang Tao,Tian Xu,Bo Xiao,Yubo Luo,Qinghui Jiang,Junyou Yang

Enhancing the thermoelectric performance of SnTe lies in the core of research, which has inspired effective and novel approaches such as point defects , electronic band structure engineering and nanostructuring. Herein, we propose an alternative route to enhance the thermoelectric performance of SnTe through a “top-down” hot deformation (HD) process. The HD induces a special orientation in the rock-salt SnTe, which is exclusive to layered structure materials and seldom achieved in cubic structure materials. In addition, the HD creates high density lattice defects such as dislocations and strain fluctuations in SnTe, a highly desired microstructure feature for low lattice thermal conductivity . As a result, the HD enables ∼45% and ∼58% enhancement in the maximum figure of merit ZT along the in-plane and cross-plane directions of SnTe. Such significant enhancement indicates great potential for the HD in enhancing the ZT of SnTe, which is extendable to other thermoelectric materials .

High Thermoelectric Performance SnTe with a Segregated and Percolated Structure

Zheng Ma,Tian Xu,Wang Li,Yiming Cheng,Jinmeng Li,Yingchao Wei,Qinghui Jiang,Yubo Luo,Junyou Yang

A nanostructure has a significant role in enhancing the power factor and preventing the heat propagation for thermoelectric materials. Herein, we propose a unique segregated and percolated (SP) microphase-separated structure to enhance the thermoelectric performance of SnTe. The SP structure is composed of insoluble SnTe and AgCuTe, in which AgCuTe with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity undergoes a solid-phase welding during a spark plasma sintering process and forms continuous percolated layers at the interface of isolated SnTe. The SP structure achieved a simultaneous scattering for low energy holes due to the energy offset of the valence band maximum between SnTe and AgCuTe and for phonons due to the noncoherent interfaces between SnTe and AgCuTe, resulting in a high Seebeck coefficient of ∼219.4 μV/K and a low lattice thermal conductivity of ∼1.1 W m–1 K–1 at 800 K for (SnTe)0.55(AgCuTe)0.45. The thermoelectric performance was further enhanced by means of the cosubstitution of In and Mn for Sn in the SnTe lattice, inducing resonance levels and extra phonon scattering. As a result, the SP structure combined with In/Mn codoping enable us to achieve a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.47 W m–1 K–1, a peak ZT of ∼1.45 at 800 K, and a high average ZT of ∼0.73 (400–800 K) for (Sn0.98In0.01Mn0.01Te)0.75(AgCuTe)0.25.

Achieving High Thermoelectric Performance of SnTe Composites with 2D WSe2

Wang Xiaochun,Zhou Zhiwei,Lin Xuesong

In this work, we introduced two-dimensional (2D) WSe 2 with the lowest heat conductivity to enhance thermoelectric properties of the non-toxic and cost-effective SnTe. On one hand, the improved power factor can be attributed to the enhancement of Seebeck coefficient due to the decrease of low-energy carriers and minority carriers by the addition of WSe 2 -SnTe p - p -type heterojunction interface barriers. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity also decreased sharply by the heightened phonon scattering from the high-density stacking faults and multiscale hierarchical architectures. Ultimately, benefiting from the dual regulation effect of the introduction of 2D WSe 2 on the electro-acoustic decoupling, an improved figure of merit ( ZT ) of 1.0 is achieved for the composition of SnTe + 6 wt% WSe 2 at 873 K, which is enhanced by 134% in comparison with the pure SnTe sample. Moreover, the meaningful attempt represents an effective and feasible strategy for mixing SnTe with other compounds by the method of ball milling. Graphical Abstract
