Zn–air battery is a promising energy conversion and storage technique because of its high specific energy density; however, the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode decreases its efficiency, thus hindering its practical application. Therefore, highly efficient electrocatalysts are required for ORR and Zn–air batteries. Herein, Co-SrCO3/N-doped carbon (NC) hybrid electrocatalysts were developed through the pyrolysis of a bimetal precursor (Co, Sr). The hybrid electrocatalysts with core–shell configuration include the outer NC shells and the inner inorganic nanoparticles (SrCO3 with surface SrO and metallic Co). The outer NC shells had direct contributions to the ORR processes, whereas the inner inorganic nanoparticles had indirect contributions, both of which were investigated in detail, especially the important roles of SrCO3 with surface SrO. Together with high surface content of doped N, high charge transfer efficiency, high BET surface area, and greater surface SrO of SrCO3, the optimized Co-SrCO3/NC-600 possesses high ORR activity, high selectivity of the apparent 4e− pathway, and excellent durability. The Zn–air battery with Co-SrCO3/NC-600 also shows high battery performance. This study provides a new protocol for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for the ORR and Zn–air batteries, through using alkaline earth metal based materials.

To address the challenges posed by excessive inflammatory responses and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the complex microenvironment during pathological bone defect repair, this study developed a composite scaffold. First, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) loaded with curcumin (CCM) was grown in situ on the surface of strontium carbonate (SrCO3) to form SrCO3@CZIF-8 composite particles with a core−shell structure. Subsequently, these particles were integrated into a poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) matrix using selective laser sintering technology. Experimental results indicate that the CCM and Zn2+ ions released during scaffold degradation effectively scavenge hydroxyl radicals (with a scavenging efficiency of 61.98% after 24 h) and significantly alleviate inflammatory responses. Furthermore, the released Sr2+ ions enhance osteogenic activity and promote osteogenic differentiation, suggesting that this scaffold holds potential for bone defect repair in complex pathological environments.

The majority of highly active cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) contain alkaline-earth metals to create oxygen vacancies and improve electronic conductivity. However, many of these cathodes unavoidably face segregation, and more importantly, the segregation and the subsequent impurity-induced species (e.g., SrCO3) are generally regarded to be detrimental to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we used a classic cathode, La0.2Sr0.8CoO3–δ (LSC), to understand the effects of SrCO3 on ORR for SOFCs. Using in situ CO2-induced transformation, SrCO3 nanorods are successfully decorated on LSC. We observe that, compared to the cell with bare LSC, the cells with SrCO3-modified LSC exhibit improved ORR activity, as represented by a decreased polarization area-specific resistance of 0.1340 Ω cm2 (650 °C) using a symmetric cell and a maximum power density of 1.211 W cm−2 (650 °C) using an anode-supported fuel cell. Electrochemical impedance spectra deconvoluted by the equivalent circuit model and the distribution of relaxation time indicate that the enhanced ORR activity is closely associated with the accelerated O2 dissociation. Additionally, the density functional theory calculation reveals that the SrCO3-modified LSC lowers the dissociation energy of O2 molecules from 1.86 eV to 0.68 eV; the calculated Bader charge suggests that generated SrCO3 facilitates the electron supply to LSC, both of which speed up the ORR kinetics. The activity enhancement is also valid for other representative cathode materials (e.g., BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1O3–δ and Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3–δ). Therefore, our work not only demonstrates that the in situ-formed SrCO3 nanorods are beneficial for O2 dissociation but also presents a general strategy to induce activity enhancement.

Bioceramics have been extensively used to improve osteogenesis of polymers because of their excellent bone-forming capabilities. However, the inadequate interfacial bonding between ceramics and polymers compromises their mechanical properties . In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was grown in situ on strontium carbonate (SrCO 3 ) to construct a core–shell SrCO 3 @ZIF-8, which was then added to poly- l -lactic acid (PLLA) to print a SrCO 3 @ZIF-8/PLLA composite scaffold using selective sintering technology. First, ZIF-8 characterized by its multiple organic ligands, forms a robust interface with PLLA. Second, SrCO 3 characterized by its negative zeta potential in solution, exhibits the ability to adsorb positively charged zinc ions . This, in turn, promotes the in situ growth of ZIF-8 on SrCO 3 , eventually achieving perfect bonding between the second phase and the PLLA matrix. Our findings indicated that the composite scaffold exhibited the highest compressive strength (21.93 MPa) and significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation of mouse mesenchymal stem cells. Moreover, the in vivo results established that the SrCO 3 @ZIF-8/PLLA scaffold significantly accelerated bone regeneration efficiency in rat femur defects. The prepared scaffold, with its favorable mechanical properties and osteogenic activity, shows considerable promise for applications in bone repair.

For solid oxide fuel cells, it is an effective strategy to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction activity of cathode through introducing active nanoparticles on electrode surface. In this study, we developed a novel cathode SrY 0.05 W 0.05 Co 0.9 O 3-δ and optimizing strategy of CO 2 -induced surface in-situ reconfiguration. The nanoscale SrCO 3 particles and the oxide nanoparticles could be produced after the treating atmosphere was switched from CO 2 to air. Both SrCO 3 nanoparticles and nano-oxides are beneficial to the oxygen reduction reaction kinetics of surface process and the area specific resistance of symmetric cell with SrY 0.05 W 0.05 Co 0.9 O 3-δ electrode decreased from 0.085 to 0.054 Ω cm 2 at 600 ℃. Although the nano-sized SrCO 3 was degraded in air over time, the oxide nanoparticles held a stable state for a long time and the resistance finally stabilized at ∼0.068 Ω cm 2 . However, for classic cathode Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ , it possesses a strong interaction with CO 2 so that the produced large-sized BaCO 3 failed to transform into nanoparticles and totally decompose. Therefore, designing the suitable cathode and tailoring the interaction between CO 2 and electrode materials are significant to realize the CO 2 -induced surface in-situ reconfiguration.
