To seek the promising candidate for 5 V electrolytes, fluorine-free lithium bis(oxalato)borat (LiBOB) is chosen as the lithium salt , γ-butyrolactone (GBL) as well as sulfolane (SL) with the property of stability against oxidative decomposition is chosen as supporting electrolyte solvents, and linear diethyl carbonate (DMC) is chosen as the third supporting electrolyte solvent to lower viscosity. After systematical analytical studies, it indicates that SL solvent is the main and key reason for the improvement of electrochemical performance , which not only improves the stability of electrolyte system against oxidative decomposition, but also decreases the electrode polarization resistance . More than that, 1.0 mol L −1 LiBOB–SL/GBL/DMC electrolyte shows good compatibilities with both intercalation hosts as LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode and carbonaceous anode. It suggests that this novel electrolyte would be an alternative electrolyte for 5 V high-voltage rechargeable lithium-ion batteries based upon LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode.

The phase splitting solvent as a promising alternative to MEA for CO 2 capture has received an increasing attention due to its low energy consumption. In this paper, the mixture of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and sulfolane was employed to absorb CO 2 from the simulated flue gas . Its phase splitting behavior was investigated. The species in each separated phase were identified using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), revealing that the upper layer was a CO 2 -rich phase and mainly consisted of DETA and DETA-carbamate. Whereas, the lower layer was CO 2 -lean phase with the sulfolane presented individually. The CO 2 absorption kinetics was also measured in a wetted-wall column as a function of temperatures, CO 2 loadings, and gas flow rate . Their impacts on the enhancement factor and mass transfer resistance were calculated by the Vapor-Liquid Equilibria (VLE) model, implying that the main CO 2 mass transfer resistance gradually transferred from the gas side to the liquid side with the CO 2 loading increasing from 0 to 2.21 mol L −1 . During the CO 2 absorption process, sulfolane acted as an inert solvent for substituting the role of water and separated from the absorption product. Consequently, the sensible heat and vaporization heat were substantially decreased by 59% and 12%, respectively. Hence the total heat duty was lowered by 19% which might noticeably advance the CO 2 capture technology.

A novel diamine-based biphasic absorbent, 3-(Dimethylamine)-1-propylamine (DMAPA)-Sulfolane-Water, was proposed for equimolar CO 2 absorption with high absorption–desorption efficiency. To optimize the CO 2 capture performance of the proposed DMAPA-Sulfolane-Water biphasic absorbents, the phase separation experiments and the absorption–desorption cyclic experiments were conducted. The results indicated that the DMAPA-Sulfolane-Water biphasic absorbent could realize a liquid–liquid phase separation performance after CO 2 absorption with sulfolane as the phase splitter and generate a CO 2 -rich upper-phase and a CO 2 -lean lower-phase. An equimolar absorption (1.023 mol CO 2 /mol DMAPA), a high initial absorption rate (0.106 mol/(L*min)), a low viscosity (10.96 mPa . s) and a high CO 2 loading (3.68 mol/L) of the CO 2 -rich upper-phase, a high desorption efficiency (92 %), and high cyclic stability were obtained due to the interaction of the intramolecular primary and tertiary amino groups in DMAPA. The minimum volume percentage of the rich phase was as low as 32 % of the total volume. In addition, temperature was confirmed to be an essential factor in the absorption and desorption process. The species in the two phases after CO 2 absorption were identified by 13 C NMR, not only further identifying the CO 2 -rich upper-phase but also revealing the mechanism of equimolar absorption by the DMAPA-Sulfolane-Water biphasic absorbents because of the high carbon peak of carbamic acid (DMAPACOOH) in the upper-phase. The quasi-salting out effect and the improved polarity of the solvents were proved to trigger the phase separation.

Aqueous batteries are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW, 1.23 V) and high melting point (0 °C) of water limit the energy density and low-temperature operation of aqueous batteries. In this work, sulfolane is introduced as a co-solvent to obtain a water/sulfolane hybrid electrolyte, which participates in the solvated sheath of lithium ions, strengthens the O H bond of water, and disrupts the large-scale hydrogen bond network. Such an elaborate strategy not only expands the ESW of the hybrid electrolyte to 3.8 V, but also lowers the glass-transition temperature to −110 °C. As proof of concept, the LiMn 2 O 4 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full batteries assembled by the hybrid electrolyte display high voltage (2.7 V) and excellent low-temperature performance of 98% capacity retention from 0 to −20 °C, which can even discharge normally and illume an LED light (rated power of 0.02 W, excitation voltage of 1.8 V) at −65 °C.

Liquid-liquid phase-separation absorbents demonstrate promising potential for enhancing CO 2 capture performance and reducing regeneration energy consumption. This work studied N , N -dimethylethylenediaminebased (2DMEDA)-physical solvents-H 2 O systems to evaluate their phase separation behaviors and absorption-desorption performance and developed a new liquid-liquid phase separation absorbent based on a 2DMEDA-sulfolane (SUL)-H 2 O system. Phase separation absorbent with varying 2DMEDA-SUL-H 2 O ratios were evaluated for phase separation behavior, viscosity and absorption-desorption properties. When the 2DMEDA-SUL-H 2 O system was formulated at 30:35:35 mass ratio, it demonstrated a relatively low dynamic viscosity of 20.14 mPa·s and a CO 2 cyclic capacity of 1.83 mol/L which was 1.44 times that of 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution. 13 C NMR analyses suggest that carbamates, bicarbonates and free amines predominantly concentrate in the CO 2 -rich phase, while SUL is primarily located in the CO 2 -lean phase. Furthermore, the phase separation mechanism was elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6–311++G(d,p) level and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It indicated that the formation of highly polar products and hydrogen bonding interactions among components were characterized as key contributing factors, and MD simulations further manifest aggregation propensities between reaction products and water molecules, driving spontaneous separation into CO 2 -rich and CO 2 -lean phases.

Two new simple acid salt ionic liquids (ASILs), tetraethylammonium diglutarate ([N 2222 ][diglutarate]) and dimethylethanolammonium diglutarate ([DMEA][diglutarate]) were synthesized and the ASILs/sulfolane binary mixtures containing 40 wt% ASILs were prepared for SO 2 absorption in this work. The SO 2 absorption rate is found to be quite fast with an equilibrium time within 2 min, due to the low viscosity of the mixtures. The solubilities of SO 2 in the two binary mixtures were measured under the pressure range of 0–1 bar and the temperature range of 303.15–333.15 K and results demonstrate the binary mixtures could trap as much as 6.836–7.624 mol SO 2 /kg absorbents at 1 bar and 303.15 K. The solubilities are 0.826–0.954 mol SO 2 /kg absorbents at a pressure as low as 0.004 bar, which is important for capturing SO 2 from the flue gas with low content of SO 2 . Thermodynamic analysis based on a Reaction Equilibrium Thermodynamic Model (RETM) was used to calculate the Henry’s law constants, reaction equilibrium constants, chemical absorption capacity, physical absorption capacity and thermodynamic functions of SO 2 absorption in the mixtures. The calculated absorption enthalpy are −53.73 and −47.15 kJ/mol for the two binary mixtures, respectively. The ASILs/sulfolane binary mixtures are shown to be an attractive alternative to pure ILs to be applied in SO 2 absorption due to the large absorption capacity and low absorption enthalpy, as well as the fast absorption rate.

A new sulfolane/secondary amine biphasic absorbent, sulfolane/2-methylaminoethanol (MAE) solution, was developed for postcombustion CO2 capture (PCC). Surprisingly, using a 4M/5M sulfolane/MAE solution saves about 60% energy consumption (EC) for CO2 stripping when compared with traditional aqueous 5M monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions. First, we theoretically proved that MAE in sulfolane-based biphasic solution improves the CO2 absorption rate with high CO2 loading at the phase-changing point, which could be energy-saving for CO2 stripping. Based on a comprehensive comparison of the phase-changing behavior, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, absorption rate, and desorption performance, the 4M/5M sulfolane/MAE was determined to be the optimal molar ratio among six sulfolane/MAE biphasic solutions for CO2 capture. In addition, the absorption and desorption experiments with various temperatures revealed that relatively low temperature (ranging from 110 to 120 °C) was favorable for CO2 removal and energy-saving. Furthermore, the 4M/5M sulfolane/MAE solution achieved a very low energy consumption (EC) compared with that of 5M MEA solution, and the stripped CO2 amount is similar to that of 5M MEA and 5M MAE solutions.

Separation of sulfides from fuel oil is of great significance for environmental protection. In this paper, the organic solvent (sulfolane) was selected to separate sulfides (thiophene and 2-methylthiophene) from model fuel oil ( n -heptane). The liquid–liquid equilibrium data of the mixtures ( n -heptane + thiophene/2-methylthiophene + sulfolane) were measured at 303.15, 313.15 and 323.15 K under 101.3 kPa. The mass conservation of the experimental data were checked, and the reliability of the tie-lie data were evaluated by the Bachman, Hand and Othmer-Tobias equations. The extraction performance of sulfolane was assessed through the separation factor and partition coefficient, and compared with those for other reported solvents, indicating that sulfolane has better extraction performance for thiophene compared with 2-methylthiophene. Then, the quantum chemical calculation was applied to found the separation mechanism of sulfolane. The analysis of electrostatic potential, interaction energies, and reduced density gradient showed that the main interactions between sulfolane and thiophene (or 2-methylthiophene) were van der Waals and weak hydrogen bond forces. Finally, the non-random two-liquid theory (NRTL) and universal quasi-chemical theory (UNIQUAC) models were applied to fit the tie-line data of the investigated mixtures with the root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) lower than 0.01. The mixed surface analysis method based on Gibbs energy topology is used to verify the binary interaction parameters, which provides basic data for simulating the separation process of sulfide in fuel oil.

Mixed amine/sulfolane (TMS) biphasic solutions have gained attention for their adjustable structure–activity relationships and lower regeneration energy. In this study, monoethanolamine (MEA) is employed as the main absorbent and polyamine as the co-absorbent, which are subsequently mixed with the phase separation promoter sulfolane (TMS) to form ternary biphasic solvent systems. Polyamine co-absorbents include 3-Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA), 3-Diethylaminopropylamine (DEAPA), and Diethylenetriamine (DETA). Phase separation, absorption, and desorption performances were systematically studied. Reaction and phase separation mechanisms were elucidated through13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The overall mass transfer coefficients (KG) were measured using a wetted wall column (WWC). Variations in the amine-to-sulfolane concentration ratio showed minimal impact on phase volume, while temperature and solvent composition significantly influenced phase separation behavior. All three solvents exhibited superior CO2capture performance, with CO2loadings in the rich phases ranging from 4.09 to 4.71 mol/L and over 96.82% of CO2concentrated in them, cyclic capacities reached or exceeded 3 mol/L, and regeneration energy consumption was 29.63–55.51% lower than 5 M MEA.13C NMR analysis indicated that multiple N atoms in polyamines promoted the formation of additional ionic species during CO2absorption, thereby enhancing phase separation completeness. Furthermore, KGvalues for the ternary systems exceeded that of conventional MEA, with the MEA/DEAPA/TMS system exhibiting a 1.7-fold increase. These findings demonstrated the industrial potential of MEA/polyamine/TMS biphasic solvents for efficient CO2capture.

Chemisorption with biphasic solvents is a promising low-energy strategy for separating CO 2 from industrial flue gas, however, amine degradation and changes in water content can considerably impede the phase-splitting performance. To the issues, tetramethylene sulfone (TMS) was selected as separating agent to prepare a biphasic solvent with polyamine triethylenetetramine (TETA) with a TETA:TMS:H 2 O ratio of 2:6:2 (denoted as 20 T-60TMS). The CO 2 loading of the blended phase and the volume fraction of the rich phase were 2.56 mol/L and 35.4%, respectively; the total regeneration heat duty was 2.36 GJ/tCO 2 . The proposed biphasic solvent exhibited better resistance to oxidative degradation and thermal degradation than did previously reported solvents, attributed to the beneficial effect of TMS. Additionally, the degradation products did not substantially reduce the phase separation performance after a 360 h thermal degradation test. A dynamic phase-splitting evaluation revealed that the 20 T-60TMS solvent was robust to changes in water content. Theoretical calculations confirmed that the introduction of TMS weakened the hydrogen bond between TETACOO − /TETAH + and H 2 O, engendering enhanced TETACOO − and TETAH + self-aggregation, forming a strong hydrogen bond network, and achieving fast phase separation. This work provides a novel biphasic solvent with excellent tolerance and stability for CO 2 capture from flue gas.

Chemical-physical biphasic absorbents significantly reduce CO 2 capture energy consumption. In this study, four tertiary amines were combined with monoethanolamine (MEA) and sulfolane to form ternary MEA/co-absorbent/sulfolane biphasic solutions for CO 2 capture. The co-absorbents used were N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), 1-Dimethylamino-2-propanol (DMIPA), 3-(Dimethylamino)-1,2-propanediol (DMAP), and 3-Diethylamino-1,2-propanediol (DEAP). The dynamic phase separation behavior and properties were examined, the absorption/desorption characteristics were analyzed, and the phase separation absorption mechanism was explored through 13 C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy. Results showed that all four ternary solvents performed excellently, achieving high CO 2 loadings in the upper phases (3.09–3.41 mol/L), strong absorption and desorption efficiencies (over 92.5 % and 85 %, respectively), large cyclic loadings (above 2.67 mol/L), and reduced energy consumption (>45.81 % lower compared to 5 M MEA solution). The addition of tertiary amines improved the absorption performance of MEA/sulfolane solutions. Phase separation was influenced by amine solvent alkalinity and hydrophilicity, leading to the presence of sulfolane in both liquid phases and the selective distribution of MEA and tertiary amines. This research offers promising alternatives for efficient CO 2 capture and provides theoretical guidance on liquid-liquid phase separation absorption mechanisms.

SiO x anode offers high theoretical capacity, enhancing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. However, traditional electrolytes fail to form an effective solid electrolyte interphase on SiO x , necessitating electrolyte modification. Sulfone-based electrolytes are crucial for high-voltage electrolyte designs due to superior oxidation stability. Therefore, a tailored sulfone electrolyte for SiO x is essential to leverage its potential and match it with high-voltage cathodes. Herein, we report the design of a high-voltage-resistant, non-flammable sulfone-based locally high-concentration electrolyte (1.0 M LiTFSI +0.2 M LiDFOB in SL/HFE/FEC). The locally high-concentration design effectively addresses the high viscosity and low wettability issues of sulfone solvents. Furthermore, by optimizing salt concentration and employing additive engineering, we precisely controlled the organo-inorganic ratio of the SEI, resulting in the formation of a robust inorganic layer and a tough organic layer. This approach effectively suppressed the capacity drop observed during the long-cycle tests, allowing the SiO x ||Li half-battery to achieve a cycle life exceeding 750 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.7 %. Additionally, this electrolyte enhances the passivation effect of the cathode electrolyte interphase, enabling the SiO x ||NCM811 full battery to stabilize at 4.5 V.
