Probing the Influence of Acidity and Temperature to Th(IV) on Hydrolysis, Nucleation, and Structural Topology

Jian Lin,Meiying Qie,Linjuan Zhang,Xiaomei Wang,Yuejian Lin,Wei Liu,Hongliang Bao,Jianqiang Wang

Systematic control of the molar ratio between thorium hydroxides and selenic acid and their reaction temperature under hydrothermal conditions results in four novel thorium-based selenate complexes, namely, [Th8O4(OH)8(SeO4)6(H2O)16]·(SeO4)2·13H2O (Th-1), [Th8O4(OH)8(SeO4)8(H2O)13]·7H2O (Th-2), Th(OH)2(SeO4)H2O (Th-3), and Th3(SeO4)6(H2O)6·2.5H2O (Th-4), as well as the thorium mixed selenite selenate compound Th(SeO3)(SeO4) (Th-5). Smaller [H2SeO4]/[Th(IV)] ratio or lower temperature give rise to the formation of octameric [Th8(μ3-O)4(μ2-OH)8]16+ cores in Th-1/Th-2 and infinite [Th(μ2-OH)2H2O]2+ chains in Th-3, respectively. Increasing the [H2SeO4]/[Th(IV)] ratio or elevating the temperature generates a microporous (11.3 Å voids) open-framework Th-4, a monomeric thorium species without oxo/hydroxyl ligands, and a three-dimensional thorium structure Th-5. Formation of these compounds suggests that variables including acidity and temperature play a critical role in the hydrolysis and oligomerization of ThIV ions. Increasing acidity limits the deprotonation of water molecules and formation of nucleophilic hydroxo/oxo-aquo Th species, and high temperature appears to suppress the olation/oxolation hydrolysis reactions, which in both ways limit the formation of the thorium oligomers.

Adsorption of Th(IV) on glutaraldehyde cross-linked N-(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan

Luo Qingyun,Wang Chongshi,Zhu Wei,Yu Hongchao,Wang Chunyan,Chen Chuanhong

Due to its high adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency, polymer gel shows excellent performances in the treatment of wastewater containing thorium. In this work, glutaraldehyde cross-linked N -(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan (CCS-AGA) was used to adsorb Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions for the first time. FT-IR and SEM results revealed the chemical structure and surface morphology of this material. The influence of solution pH, contact time and initial concentration of Th ions on the adsorption of Th(IV) by CCS-AGA was investigated. The experimental data suggest that the adsorption behavior of CCS-AGA could be accurately predicted by the Langmuir model. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of CCS-AGA for Th(IV) was 162 mg/g. Moreover, this material exhibited excellent reusability and adsorption selectivity for Th(IV).

Pore-Size Engineering of Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Differentiating Th(IV) Adsorption Capacity and Kinetics

Shangjie Zhao,Long Chen,Jicong Li,Xiaofan Ding,Ke Ma,Jing Zhao,Ran Zhang,Ke Wang,Jinping Liu,Songtao Xiao

Efficient separation and recovery of thorium(IV) are essential for a sustainable nuclear fuel cycle and environmental protection. Imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) often face challenges due to mismatches between pore structures and mass-transfer processes during adsorption. To tackle this issue, we used 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) as a building block, incorporating large PyTTA and small BDA as linkers. We synthesized two COFs with varying pore sizes, COF-1 and COF-2, using a solvothermal method to create distinct pore environments. We systematically examined their impact on Th(IV) adsorption behavior. COF-1, with its dense skeleton, maximized active-site density and achieved excellent pore-size matching, resulting in high selectivity and a saturated adsorption capacity of approximately 200 mg·g⁻¹ at pH 4.5 and 298 K. In contrast, COF-2 formed an open framework with larger pores, enhancing mass transfer and providing faster adsorption kinetics. These findings highlight the distinct influence of pore-size engineering on adsorption capacity and kinetics, demonstrating a differentiation strategy.

Adsorption of Eu(III) and Th(IV) on three-dimensional graphene-based macrostructure studied by spectroscopic investigation

Zhi-Wei Huang,Zi-Jie Li,Li-Rong Zheng,Wang-Suo Wu,Zhi-Fang Chai,Wei-Qun Shi

One of the most important reasons for the controversy over the development of nuclear energy is the proper disposal of spent fuel . Separation of actinide and lanthanide ions is an important part of safe long-term storage of radioactive waste . Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based macrostructure (GOCS) was utilized to remove actinide thorium and lanthanide europium ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption of Eu(III) and Th(IV) on the GOCS was evaluated as a function of adsorption time, solution pH, initial ion concentrations , and ionic strength. The experimentally determined maximum adsorption capacities of this GOCS for Eu(III) (pH 6.0) and Th(IV) (pH 3.0) are as high as 150 and 220 mg/g, respectively. By using Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, we concluded that the Eu(III) and Th(IV) adsorption was predominantly attributed to the inner-sphere coordination with various oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups on GOCS surfaces. Our selective adsorption results demonstrate that the actinide and lanthanide ions can be effectively separated from transition metal ions . This study provides new clues to the overall recycling of actinide and lanthanide ions in radioactive environmental pollution treatments.

Preparation of graphene oxide-manganese dioxide for highly efficient adsorption and separation of Th(IV)/U(VI)

Ning Pan,Long Li,Jie Ding,Shengke Li,Ruibing Wang,Yongdong Jin,Xiangke Wang,Chuanqin Xia

Manganese dioxide decorated graphene oxide (GOM) was prepared via fixation of crystallographic MnO 2 (α, γ) on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and was explored as an adsorbent material for simultaneous removal of thorium/uranium ions from aqueous solutions. In single component systems (Th(IV) or U(VI)), the α-GOM 2 (the weight ratio of GO/α-MnO 2 of 2) exhibited higher maximum adsorption capacities toward both Th(IV) (497.5   mg/g) and U(VI) (185.2   mg/g) than those of GO. In the binary component system (Th(IV)/U(VI)), the saturated adsorption capacity of Th(IV) (408.8   mg/g)/U(VI) (66.8   mg/g) on α-GOM 2 was also higher than those on GO. Based on the analysis of various data, it was proposed that the adsorption process may involve four types of molecular interactions including coordination, electrostatic interaction, cation-pi interaction, and Lewis acid-base interaction between Th(IV)/U(VI) and α-GOM 2 . Finally, the Th(IV)/U(VI) ions on α-GOM 2 can be separated by a two-stage desorption process with Na 2 CO 3 /EDTA. Those results displayed that the α-GOM 2 may be utilized as an potential adsorbent for removing and separating Th(IV)/U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.

Superefficient separation of Th(IV) and U(VI) by lignin-derived magnetic biochar via competitive adsorption mechanism

Lijun Guo,Liangqiong Peng,Jiheng Li,Wenhua Zhang,Bi Shi

Thorium (Th) and uranium (U) separation remains a huge challenge due to their high similarity in chemical behavior. In this study, lignin-derived magnetic biochar (AL-Fe/BC), which can provide functional sites for adsorbing Th(IV) and U(VI), was synthesized for the selective extraction of Th(IV) from the binary U(VI)-Th(IV) matrix. Characterizations results confirm the successful zero-valent iron loading, and the AL-Fe/BC exhibited a developed polyporous structure, high surface area, stable crystallinity, high defects degree, and advantageous magnetic feature of expedient recovery from water without energy consumption. The optimist AL-Fe/BC-800 showed an outstanding adsorption capacity with a maximal Th(IV) uptake of 2000 mg/g, and a small absorption of 3 mg/g of U(VI) (Th(IV) = 180 mg/L, U(VI) = 20 mg/L, AL-Fe/BC-800 = 0.05 g/L). Moreover, the separation factor of Th(IV) from the Th(IV)-U(VI) matrix reached 90,000 even concomitant with high a concentration of co-existing ions. The active adsorption sites on AL-Fe/BC-800, such as COOH, C-OH, C=O, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and pyrrolic N, exhibited a stronger binding affinity with Th(IV) than U(VI), achieving selective Th(IV) adsorption via a chemisorption process on the basis of competitive adsorption. In summary, AL-Fe/BC-800 is a potential adsorbent in industrial application for the superefficient separation of Th(IV) and U(VI) with high-performance magnetic recovery, promoting the sustainable development of nuclear industry, especially considering the necessary development of Th(IV) fuel.

Selective solid-phase extraction of trace thorium(IV) using surface-grafted Th(IV)-imprinted polymers with pyrazole derivative

Canrong Lin,Hongqing Wang,Yuyuan Wang,Zhiqiang Cheng

A new pyrazole derivative 1-phenyl-3-methylthio-4-cyano-5-acrylicacidcarbamoyl-pyrazole (PMTCAACP) was synthesized and chosen as a complexing monomer for the preparation of surface-grafted ion-imprinted polymers for selective solid-phase extraction of thorium(IV). The silica gel, modified with maleic anhydride , was prepared as a carrier material. In the ion-imprinting process, Th(IV) was complexed with PMTCAACP, and then imprinted in the polymers grafted to the surface of modified silica gel. Subsequently, the template Th(IV) ions were removed with 6   mol/L HCl solution. The obtained ion-imprinted particles for Th(IV) showed specific recognition, and rapid adsorption and desorption kinetics process. The maximum static and total dynamic adsorption capacity of the ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) for Th(IV) was 64.8 and 37.4   mg/g, respectively. The relative selectivity coefficient values of the imprinted adsorbent for Th(IV)/U(VI), Th(IV)/Ce(III), Th(IV)/La(III), and Th(IV)/Zr(IV) were 72.9, 89.6, 93.8, and 137.2 times greater than non-imprinted matrix, respectively. The interference effect of common cations tested did not interfere with the recovery of Th(IV). The enhancement factor of 20.2, the detection limit of 0.43   μg/L, and the precision of 2.47% ( n   =   7) of the method under the optimized conditions were obtained. Additionally, the calibration curve ( r   =   0.9993) was linear in the range of 1.43–103   μg/L of thorium(IV). The prepared IIPs were shown to be promising for solid-phase extraction coupled with UV–vis spectrophotometry for determination of trace Th(IV) in real samples.

Investigation of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) ions’ sorption behavior onto silica gel modified with anhydride

Hu Peizhuo,Nan Yu,Tai Wenya,Shan Qiang,Zhong Yi,Lei Zhiwei,Liu Tonghuan,Chen Suwen,Qian Lijuan

Modification of silica gel by butanedioic anhydride (SiO 2 –BDAH) results in efficient adsorbents for removal of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 –BDAH was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetic analysis, and potentiometric titration. The effect of contact time, pH, and initial concentration of radioactive solutions and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the sorbent was investigated. The sorption equilibrium times of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) onto SiO 2 –BDAH were 1.5, 2, and about 10 h. The sorption percentages of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) increased with increased pH from 1 to 5. The sorption process of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) can be described by the Langmuir model, with sorption capacities of 5.10 × 10 −5 , 5.06 × 10 −5 , and 3.44 × 10 −5  mol/L, respectively. The enthalpy and entropy changes were all positive, whereas the free energy changes were negative. This study indicated that SiO 2 –BDAH can remove U(VI) and Th(IV) at the same time in the presence of multiple ions from waste water quickly.

Selective preconcentration of trace thorium from aqueous solutions with Th(IV)-imprinted polymers prepared by a surface-grafted technique

Canrong Lin,Hongqing Wang,Yuyuan Wang,Li Zhou,Jun Liang

A novel ion-imprinted adsorbent for selective solid phase extraction of thorium(IV) based on the surface of silica gel was prepared by a surface-grafted technique with methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer. After removal of Th(IV) ions with 3 mol L−1 HCl solution, the obtained imprinted particles for Th(IV) exhibited specific recognition and relatively rapid kinetic process. The maximum static and total dynamic adsorption capacity of the ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) for Th(IV) was 33.2 and 17.3 mg g−1, respectively. A comparison of the selectivity coefficient of the imprinted polymers with that of non-imprinted polymers showed that the imprinted matrix for Th(IV)/U(VI), Th(IV)/Ce(III), Th(IV)/La(III) and Th(IV)/Zr(IV) was 58.8, 107, 106.4 and 151.7 times greater than non-imprinted matrix, respectively. With a series of samples loading flow rate of 3 mL min−1 for preconcentration, an enrichment factor of 14.6 and the detection limit of 0.59 µg L−1 were obtained. The relative standard deviation of the method under optimum conditions was 2.1% (n = 7). The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace Th(IV) in real water samples with satisfactory results.

A Schiff base/quaternary ammonium salt bifunctional graphene oxide as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Th(IV)/U(VI)

Ning Pan,Long Li,Jie Ding,Ruibing Wang,Yongdong Jin,Chuanqin Xia

A novel approach for facile covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) was proposed in the present study in order to effectively avoid necessary anhydrous conditions and the usage of harsh reagents during the chemical functionalization of GO. Herein, a GO derivative that was functionalized with a primary amine derivative bearing a positively charged quaternary ammonium group, GO-S, was synthesized through a Schiff base condensation reaction between the amine groups of the primary amine derivative and the aldehyde groups of GO. The introduction of the quaternary ammonium groups can prevent GO from stacking and improve the dispersibility of GO after modification. The formation of imine bonds ( N CH ) between the primary amine and GO has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The GO-S demonstrated good dispersion stability in aqueous medium and also exhibited better adsorption performance than GO for Th(IV) and U(VI), with a maximum thorium adsorption capacity of 2.22   mmol/g and a maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 0.83   mmol/g, suggesting a great potential for the application of graphene oxide-based materials for facilitating the removal of Th(IV) and U(VI) from nuclear waste solutions.

A modeling study by response surface methodology (RSM) on Th(IV) adsorption optimization using a sulfated β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex

Qi Caixia,Liu Huijun,Deng Shanxia,Yang AoHui,Li Zhendong

The inclusion complex (sulfated-β-CD@NAA) of sulfated β-cyclodextrin and α-naphthylacetic acid was synthesized for adsorption of low concentrations of thorium from aqueous solutions. The structure and property of sulfated-β-CD@NAA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric, X-ray diffraction, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, specific surface area measurement and scanning electron microscopy. The characterization analysis confirmed the formation of new solid phase. The results indicated that α-naphthylacetic acid embedded into the cavity of sulfated β-cyclodextrin partly from the secondary face and the thermal stability of inclusion complex was significantly increased. The experiments were designed by Box–Behnken design combined with response surface methodology. The adsorption parameters of pH value, contact time, initial concentration were used as the independent variables and their effects were investigated on the Th(IV) adsorption capacity. Second-order polynomial regression models were derived and analysis of variance was utilized to judge the adequacy of the chosen models. The maximum Th(IV) adsorption capacity (12.75 mg g −1 ) was achieved under the following conditions: pH value 2.5, contact time 35 min, initial concentration 30 mg L −1 . Prediction of models was in good agreement with experimental results. The experimental adsorption kinetic data followed a pseudo-second-order equation with the correlation of 0.9996, indicating the chemical adsorption. The obtained equilibrium isotherm data were fitted well with Langmuir model in the concentration range considered. The thermodynamic parameters ( ∆H 0  < 0, ∆S 0  < 0, ∆G 0  < 0) indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. Regeneration of Th(IV)-loaded sulfated-β-CD@NAA with 0.1 M HNO 3 solution, and the regenerated sulfated-β-CD@NAA can be reused for adsorption of Th(IV).

Selective adsorption of Th(IV) using novel MoX2 (X = S, Se)-α-zirconium phosphate composites from simulated monazite and bastnaesite leachates

Jing Wang,Guangxi Wang,Xiaoyan Ji,Zhiwen Chang,Yu Wang,Wenguang Chen,Leilei Zhang,Shuwen An,Yi Gu,Jun Liu

The mining, processing, and refining of rare-earth ores generate Th-rich radioactive wastewater, making its effective treatment critical for environmental protection and public health. In this study, mesoporous MoX 2 -α-ZrP (X = S, Se) composite powders were synthesized for Th(IV) adsorption from aqueous solutions. Under the conditions of [Th(IV)] initial = 50 ± 2 mg·L −1 , pH initial = 3, temperature = 298 K, and a contact time = 1440 min, the larger pore volume and pore width of the composites, compared with α-ZrP, enhanced the adsorption capacity ( q e ) of MoSe 2 -α-ZrP and MoS 2 -α-ZrP to 146.3 ± 7.4 mg·g −1 and 143.7 ± 2.5 mg·g −1 , respectively. Higher pH, [Th(IV)] initial, and temperature further enhanced Th(IV) adsorption. Notably, MoX 2 -α-ZrP removed Th(IV) from simulated leaching solution of monazite or bastnaesite and selectively adsorbed Th(IV) in the presence of co-existing ions. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses confirmed a spontaneous, endothermic, and homogeneous chemisorption behavior. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models accurately described dynamic column Th(IV) adsorption, and increases in adsorbent mass, together with decreases in influent Th(IV) concentration, and reduced flow rate extended both breakthrough and saturation times. Mechanistic studies revealed Th(IV) coordination with oxygen-containing groups, ion exchange with -OH, and electrostatic interaction with phosphate groups. Results from our study can help explore the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Th(IV) on potential MoX 2 (X = O, S, Se)-based or α-ZrP-based materials for treating Th-rich radioactive wastewater.
