Closely Compacted TiNb2O7-C Assembly for Fast-Charging Battery Anodes

Weiwei Liu,Jing Liu,Menghua Zhu,Wenyu Wang,Yongming Sun

The fast-charging capability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is becoming more important than before to meet the increasing requirements in practical applications. Because of safe working potential (above 1 V) and moderately high specific capacity, titanium niobium oxide (TiNb2O7, TNO) shows great potential as a fast-charging anode. Herein, a TNO-C assembly consisting of active initial TNO nanoparticles with conformal carbon coating is fabricated. The small size of TNO nanoparticles provides a short diffusion distance for lithium ions, and surficial carbon layers enable good electronic conductivity within the entire assembly. Moreover, the compact structure within the TNO assembly and efficient space packing of spheroidal secondary particles are beneficial for close packing, leading to an overall short distance for electron transport and ion diffusion. As expected, the as-designed TNO-C electrode delivers a high capacity of 194 mAh g–1 under 10C, and 71% of capacity was achieved under 0.2C. Moreover, the TNO-C electrode shows stable cycling performance with capacity retention of 92.2% after 100 cycles under 2C. In addition, by pairing with a lithium nickel–cobalt manganate (LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2, NCM) cathode, the full cell exhibits a high capacity of 140 mAh g–1 under 3C and a high capacity retention of 97.4% after 100 cycles. The rational design of a TNO-C assembly makes it an excellent anode candidate for fast-charging LIBs.

Haoxiang Yu,Hua Lan,Lei Yan,Shangshu Qian,Xing Cheng,Haojie Zhu,Nengbing Long,Miao Shui,Jie Shu

Hollow microstructure always exhibits some special properties in the field of electrochemistry . Here, this study reports the rational design and preparation of TiNb 2 O 7 nanofibers with one dimensional hollow structure via co-electrospinning. The as-electrospun TiNb 2 O 7 hollow nanofibers show high intercalation potential, low charge-charge resistance and fast electrochemical kinetics . The electrochemical results exhibit that the TiNb 2 O 7 hollow nanofibers deliver a reversible capacity of 210.1   mAh   g −1 after 150 cycles at a current rate of 0.4   C, and 158.4   mAh   g −1 after 900 cycles even at a current rate of 10   C with an outstanding capacity retention of 80.6%. The excellent electrochemical performance of nanofibers can be related to the unique morphology of hollow structure. Furthermore, the lithium ions storage mechanism of TiNb 2 O 7 hollow nanofibers is also systematically analyzed, which is related to one two-phase coexistence and two solid-solution processes during the whole charge-discharge cycle. In addition, it is also demonstrated by in situ and ex situ observations that TiNb 2 O 7 hollow nanofibers have outstanding structural stability and electrochemical reversibility. Therefore, the TiNb 2 O 7 hollow nanofibers can be applied as an alternative promising electrode material for the next rechargeable lithium ions batteries .

A stable fast-charging TiNb2O7 anode material enabled by strong Ta-O bonds

Dong Fei-Long,Liu Zhen-Hua,Jiang Ying,Liang Zhe,Chu Xu,Ma Chun-Hui,Sun Hao,Xie Hai-Ming

TiNb 2 O 7 (TNO) is regarded as a potential fast-charging anode for lithium-ion batteries due to its fast reversible phase transition and safe working potential, but it suffers from unsatisfactory electronic conductivity, sluggish ion kinetics, and poor structural stability under high rates. Herein, tantalum (Ta) with strong Ta–O bonds is doped into TNO to enhance its fast-charging property and structural stability. Proper amount of Ta doping not only increases the interlayer spacing for fast Li + transport, but also improves the electrical conductivity, being successfully proved by experimental analyses. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation verifies that the lattice distortion induced by the incorporation of strong Ta-O bonds can effectively strengthen the structural stability. Notably, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology reveals that Ta doping relieves volumetric strain during lithiation and de-lithiation. Thus, the optimized Ta 0.1 -TNO sample owns impressive long-term cycling stability even at a high current density of 10C, which delivers a high-capacity retention of 85.12% (a capacity decay of less than 0.01% per cycle) after 1500 cycles. This work provides a fast-charging anode material with superior structural stability for lithium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract

Ni doping regulates the electronic structure of TiNb2O7 to achieve fast lithium-ion storage

Wen Jiawei,Zhang Songyang,Chen Jian-an,Zhang Xiaoming,Wang Xin,Huang Guoyong

Titanium niobium oxide (TiNb 2 O 7 , TNO) has become a high-performance anode material for fast-charging lithium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity, safety advantages and stable cycling performance. Nevertheless, the material’s low electronic/ionic conductivity remains a critical challenge for commercial implementation. The present study presents a novel Ni-doping strategy for TNO that optimizes the electronic structure, achieving a remarkable improvement in lithium-ion storage performance through enhanced charge transfer and ionic diffusion. The Ni 0.02 -TNO anode exhibits a reversible capacity of 240.7 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles at 1C, while retaining 172.9 mAh g −1 even after 1000 cycles under an ultra-high rate of 10C, demonstrating exceptional long-term stability and rate capability. Furthermore, the assembled LiFePO 4 (LFP) ||Ni 0.02 -TNO pouch cell demonstrates outstanding cycling stability, with 86.9% capacity retention over 500 cycles at 1C. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ni doping reduces the bandgap from 2.193 eV to 0.765 eV, thereby enhancing electronic conductivity and facilitating faster charge transfer kinetics. This work provides a viable pathway for designing advanced lithium-ion batteries with rapid-charging capability and long-term cyclability.

Solvothermal synthesis of TiNb2O7 microspheres as anodic materials for high-performance lithium–ion batteries

Zhang Wenkui,Bao Jian,Lu Chengwei,Zhou Xiaozheng,Xia Xinhui,Zhang Jun,He Xinping,Gan Yongping,Huang Hui,Wang Chen,Wan Wangjun,Fang Ruyi,Xia Yang

TiNb 2 O 7 (TNO) has been regarded as a promising anode material for high-power lithium–ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and work voltage (387.6 mA h g −1 , 1.6 V vs. Li + /Li). Herein, a series of microspherical TNO anode materials are synthesized by a facile solvothermal method, and the effect of solvothermal time on the microstructure and electrochemical performance is investigated. Specifically, when the solvothermal time is 12 h, the TNO microsphere (TNO-12) exhibits higher specific surface area and more reasonable pore size distribution. As a result, TNO-12 anode delivers a high reversible discharge capacity of 299.87 mA h g −1 with a superior initial coulombic efficiency above 98.5%, excellent cycling capacity retention of 80.15% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C (150 mA g −1 ), and good rate performance at 0.1–2 C. Most importantly, the full cell constructed with TNO anode and commercial oxide cathode (LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.4 O 2 /LiMn 2 O 4 with a mass ratio of 85: 15) exhibits excellent cycling stability at high current densities (79.14% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C). This study optimizes the synthesis process for high-performance microspherical TNOs, providing new insights for the next generation of commercial anodes.

Three-dimensionally ordered porous TiNb2O7 nanotubes: a superior anode material for next generation hybrid supercapacitors

Hongsen Li,Laifa Shen,Jie Wang,Shan Fang,Yingxia Zhang,Hui Dou,Xiaogang Zhang

Hybrid supercapacitors are a very appealing power source with high energy density and power density because they employ both the merits of lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors. To balance such hybrid systems, the rate of the redox component must be substantially comparative to the levels of the double layer process. As far as the insertion-host material TiNb2O7 is concerned, we have used facile step electrode design consisting of the physically assisted template infusion of Ti–Nb sol into the pores of AAO followed by in situ conversion into porous TiNb2O7 nanotubes within the AAO walls under calcination, and finally making those templates dissolve away. Using such an electrode as the battery type anode and a graphene grass electrode as the capacitor type cathode, we successfully constructed a novel hybrid supercapacitor. Within a voltage range of 0–3 V, a high energy density of ∼74 W h kg−1 is achieved and it could remain as much as ∼34.5 W h kg−1 at a power of 7500 W kg−1. The present research sheds new light on the development of energy storage devices with both high energy density and high power density.

Constructing ion/electron dual highways in Pr3+-doped TiNb2O7 via a tri-doped carbon framework

Zhikang Wang,Fan Gao,Gang Huang,Yuhan Zhou,Baorong Duan,Jianqiang Chen,Ye Wang,Yuan Chen,Yanqing Wang

Titanium niobium oxide (TiNb₂O₇, TNO) holds great promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries but is hindered by insufficient intrinsic capacity and sluggish Li + diffusion kinetics in practical applications. Herein, we report a high-performance TNO-based nanocomposite fabricated via a synergistic strategy integrating Pr 3+ doping and encapsulation in a N/O/S tri-doped honeycomb-like porous carbon framework. Pr 3+ ions with a large ionic radius (1.126 Å) are incorporated into TNO nanospheres (100–200 nm), inducing oxygen vacancies and lattice expansion to broaden ion diffusion pathways and accelerate Li + transport. Simultaneously, the tri-doped honeycomb carbon serves as a three-dimensional conductive network, efficiently buffers volume variations during cycling, and constructs robust Ti–O–C heterointerfaces, which collectively reduce Li + diffusion barriers. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized composite exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance: the half-cell delivers a specific capacity of 205.61 mAh g −1 at 20C and retains 174.79 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles (retention rate > 85%), whereas the full-cell assembled with a LiFePO₄ cathode maintains 115.39 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 10C. This work highlights that the synergistic integration of Pr 3+ doping and carbon heterointerface engineering significantly enhances the lithium storage kinetics and structural stability of TNO-based anodes, offering a promising strategy for the development of advanced high-performance lithium-ion battery electrodes.

Synergistic Dual-Carbon Networks Bridged Mn-Doped TiNb2O7 Anode for Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lipeng Huang,Yuxin Huang,Junxiang Wang,Jiarui Lin,Junling Xu,ZongJie Yin,Xiang Wang,Ming Li,Xiaoyan Shi,Lianyi Shao,Zhipeng Sun

The development of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries must meet the demands for high safety, high energy density, and fast-charging performance. TiNb2O7 is notable for its high theoretical specific capacity, low structural strain, and exceptional fast-charging capability, attributed to its Wadsley–Roth crystal structure. However, its inherently poor conductivity has hindered its practical application. This study employed an integrated internal and external modification strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of TiNb2O7. The Mn ions was doped internally via the first hydrothermal reaction while a bridged conductive network with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was constructed by the second hydrothermal reaction, thereby improving both ionic and electronic conductivity of TiNb2O7 simultaneously. The resulting dual-carbon network-bridged Mn-doped TiNb2O7 (Mn0.1-TNO@rGO/CNT) delivered a specific capacity of 280 mAh g–1 at 0.5 C, a high-rate capacity of 177 mAh g–1 at 30 C, and retained 233.9 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, corresponding to an 84.1% capacity retention rate and a cycle fade rate of only 0.0795% per cycle. The superior rate performance and cycling stability of Mn0.1-TNO@rGO/CNT were maintained over a wide-temperature range. Besides, the strategy of dual-carbon network bridging and Mn-doping effectively prevents the TiNb2O7 spheres from cracking after long cycling. To assess the practical feasibility, the cell assembled using Mn0.1-TNO@rGO/CNT with high mass loading around 5 mg cm–2 demonstrated an initial capacity of 240 mAh g–1 at 0.5 C and delivered 60 mAh g–1 at a high rate of 20 C. Furthermore, a full cell paired with a LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode delivered a specific capacity of 81.3 mAh g–1 at 2 C and exhibited a high capacity retention of 68% after 500 cycles at 5 C.

Bulk Modification of Porous TiNb2O7 Microsphere to Achieve Superior Lithium-Storage Properties at Low Temperature

Gengchen Yu,Qi Zhang,Jiayi Jing,Xu Wang,Yifan Li,Xue Bai,Tao Li

TiNb 2 O 7 , as a promising alternative of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 , exhibits giant potential as low-temperature anode due to its higher theoretical capacity and comparable structural stability. However, the sluggish electronic conductivity still remains a challenge. Herein, bulk modification of Cu + doping in porous TiNb 2 O 7 microsphere is proposed via a simple one-step solvothermal method with subsequent calcination treatment. The results show that the electronic conductivity is improved effectively due to the reduced band gap after doping, while enhanced lithium-ion diffusion is achieved benefiting from the increased interplanar spacing. Therefore, the optimal sample of Cu 0.06 Ti 0.94 Nb 2 O 7 exhibits a high reversible capacity of 244.4 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles, superior rate capability, and long-term cycling stability at 1000 mA g −1 at room temperature. Particularly, it can also display good performance in a wide temperature range from 25 to –30 °C, including a reversible capacity of 76.6 mA h g −1 at –20 °C after 200 cycles at 200 mA g −1 . Moreover, Cu 0.06 Ti 0.94 Nb 2 O 7 //LiFePO 4 full cell can deliver a high reversible capacity of 177.5 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 . The excellent electrochemical properties at both ambient and low-temperatures demonstrate the great potential of Cu + -doped TiNb 2 O 7 in energy-storage applications.

Enhanced performance of TiNb2O7 electrode-based mixed-potential NH3 sensor: Synergy of surface lewis acidity and morphological engineering

Xiaoqing Jiang,Feng Qiu,Jie Wang,Chu Cheng,Panhui Yang,Tao Yuan,Jiawen Jian,Xianwang Ye,Jie Zou

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based ammonia (NH 3 ) sensors offer high-temperature stability and real-time monitoring capabilities for environmental protection. However, these promising sensors suffer from low sensitivity governed by the sensing electrode (SE), where surface Lewis acidity and microstructural properties regulate the selective adsorption and activation of NH 3 . In this work, TiNb 2 O 7 with exposed Ti 4 + /Nb 5+ Lewis-acidic sites was first employed as the SE for a YSZ-based mixed-potential NH 3 sensor, with its microstructure optimized to enhance sensing performance. The sensor exhibited a superior response of −202.41 mV to 200 ppm NH 3 with a sensitivity of −119.27 mV/decade at 600℃, attributed to the synergy between exposed Ti 4+ /Nb 5+ Lewis-acidic sites and optimized triple-phase boundaries accessibility. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrated high selectivity against common interfering gases (NO, NO 2 , C 3 H 6 , and CH 4 ) and robust stability over 30 days.

Enhancing the depressed initial Coulombic efficiency of regenerated graphite anodes via the surface modification of a TiNb2O7 nanolayer

Haoran Da,Jin Li,Jiateng Shi,Haitao Zhang

Spent graphite (SG) anodes are extensively overlooked despite being a potential anode material on account of their relatively low cost when compared to the valuable metal elements of cathode materials . However, the cracked surface structure and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of SG will lead to depressed initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), which hampers the application of graphite recovery techniques. Here, a uniform layer of TiNb 2 O 7 nanoparticles is successfully constructed on a damaged SG surface. Benefiting from the stable structure, the TiNb 2 O 7 coating can effectively protect the cracked sites and enhance Li +  diffusion. In addition, this layer can provide a high Li +  insertion potential and effectively suppress the unfavorable formation of an unstable SEI. The TiNb 2 O 7 coating can also provide extra capacity, compensating for the capacity fade of SG. After modification, the regenerated graphite not only exhibits enhanced rate performance by means of reconstructed Li +  transfer channels but also demonstrates a prolonged cycle life due to the stabilized bulk structure. A full cell containing LiFePO 4 and a regenerated graphite anode shows a high capacity retention, namely, 89.0% after 500 cycles at 1C. This study obtains regenerated graphite with a high ICE, thereby promoting the reutilization of spent graphite anodes.

Three-dimensional TiNb2O7 anchored on carbon nanofiber core–shell arrays as an anode for high-rate lithium ion storage

Meili Qi,Dongliang Chao,Weifeng Sun,Jinghua Yin,Minghua Chen

The control of structure and morphology in an electrode design for the development of large-power lithium ion batteries is crucial to create efficient transport pathways for ions and electrons. Herein, we report a powerful combinational strategy to build omnibearing conductive networks composed of titanium niobium oxide nanorods and carbon nanofibers (TNO/CNFs) via an electrostatic spinning method and a hydrothermal method into free-standing arrays with a three-dimensional heterostructure core/shell structure. TNO/CNF electrode exhibits significantly superior electrochemical performance and high-rate capability (241 mA h g−1 at 10C, and 208 mA h g−1 at 20C). The capacity of the TNO/CNF electrode is 257 mA h g−1 after 2000 cycles at 20C, which is much higher than that of the TNO electrode. In particular, the TNO/CNF electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 153.6 mA h g−1 with a capacity retention of 95% after 5000 cycles at ultrahigh current density. Superior electrochemical performances of the TNO/CNF electrode are attributed to the unique composite structure.
