Two kinds of TiO2 nanobelts were prepared from commercial P-25 powders via an alkaline hydrothermal method with and without an acid etching process. The uncauterized nanobelts (TNs) exhibited a smooth surface, and mixed phases of anatase and TiO2 (B), whereas the cauterized ones (CTNs) displayed a rough surface and a pure anatase structure. TNs and CTNs were then deposited onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface with a conductive adhesive (CA), and the resulting chemically modified electrodes exhibited electrocatalytic activities in the oxidation of nucleobases in a 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at pH 7.4. For guanine and adenine, well-defined oxidation peaks were observed in voltammetric measurements at about +0.62 and +0.89 V, respectively, at a potential sweep rate of 100 mV s−1, whereas for cytosine, uracil and thymine, the voltammetric features were not obvious. The average surface coverages (Γ) of guanine and adenine on the CTNs/CA/GCE electrode were estimated to be 4.75 × 10−10 and 7.44 × 10−10 mol cm−2, respectively, which were about twice those at the TNs/CA/GCE electrode. The enhanced activity of the CTN-based electrode towards purine nucleobase oxidation was ascribed to the large specific surface area and anatase structures with enhanced (001) facets of the CTN that facilitated adsorption of the analytes onto the electrode surface and charge transport through the electrode surface layer.

Amino acids are widely used in various applications, its production mainly relies on the fermentation of grain crops, and the chemosynthesis method from non-grain biomass still faces the challenge of low efficiency (<50 %). Herein, Ru clusters anchored on ultrathin TiO 2 nanobelts (NBs) with abundant oxygen vacancies are fabricated and used to convert lignocellulose-derived α-hydroxy acids to α-amino acids. The Ru/TiO 2 NBs achieved up to 80 % alanine yield from lignocellulose-derived lactic acid (LA). The characterization results reveal that the TiO 2 NBs with abundant oxygen vacancies could anchor Ru clusters uniformly and enable the α-OH dehydrogenation occur spontaneously. Simultaneously, Ru clusters with appropriate particle size are beneficial for the activation of H 2 and could promote the dehydrogenation from the α-OH and α-C(sp 3 )-H of LA. Furthermore, DFT simulations also indicate that further decrease the Ru cluster size (< 1 nm) will inhibit the adsorption of α-C(sp 3 )-H on cluster surface, thereby suppressing the removal of hydrogen atoms. This research provides a green and efficient chemical catalytic conversion idea for amino acid production from non-grain biomass.

Thermo-enhanced photocatalysis has been reported as a potential strategy for improving the activity, whereas the relationship between thermal energy and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of noble metal nanoparticles has been rarely investigated. Herein, photocatalytic selective aerobic oxidation of amines to imines is investigated under visible light irradiation over heterostructured TiO2(B)/anatase and Au/TiO2 nanobelts at specific temperatures (20–60 °C). The surface amine substrate complexed on TiO2 could broaden the visible-light absorption region via the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) effect. Interestingly, the pristine TiO2 achieves the best photocatalytic performance (>99% benzylamine conversion and >99% N-benzylidenebenzylamine selectivity) at 60 °C after 12 h irradiation while the Au nanoparticles (NPs) are observed to improve the activity of TiO2 only in a low temperature range (<40 °C). Moreover, excessive Au NPs loaded on TiO2 could inhibit the amine conversion and reduce the imine selectivity in the whole temperature range of 20–60 °C, which is attributed to the decreased oxygen vacancies and poor amine adsorption ability on the surface of Au/TiO2. A plausible explanation is finally proposed that the substrate–TiO2 complex, instead of plasmonic Au NPs, plays a vital role in achieving good amine conversion and imine selectivity.

A new porous C 3 N 4 /reduced graphene oxide/TiO 2 nanobelt catalyst (CRT) was assembled and used to remove 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PS) and visible light. The characterization results showed that larger porous graphite carbon nitrides (pg-C 3 N 4 ) covered onto the surface of TiO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in which layered RGO was wrapped onto the surface of anatase TiO 2 nanobelt uniformly. The layered RGO in CRT played significant role in separation of electron-hole pairs and nonradical activation. The electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiment revealed that h + , 1 O 2 and •O 2 – and direct electron transfer route contributed to complete removal of 6 mg/L EE2 within 6 min only with 0.5 g/L dosage and 1 mM PS. The degradation rate of EE2 in CRT/PS/Vis was 207.51 times than that in photocatalysis. The degradation products were identified by a solid phase extraction pretreatment method combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. Moreover, the estrogenic activities can be rapidly eliminated in CRT/PS/Vis process.
