Activating Glycerol Deep Oxidation via Au-TiOx Interfacial Synergy in Bimetallic Nanocatalysts

Yu Liu,Rong Peng,Ying Xu,Xiaoqiong Liu,Yi Song,Wenwei Liu,Wu Tianli,Junwei Zhang,Tao Li

Glycerol, as a renewable fuel with high energy density, has broad application prospects in green energy conversion. However, its electrocatalytic oxidation is limited by the activity and selectivity of catalysts, which severely restricts the efficient release of energy. In this work, we report a facile co-reduction synthesis of bimetallic Au-Ti nanoparticles featuring abundant Au-TiO x interfaces, which nearly doubled the mass activity for glycerol electrooxidation from 1.420 A mg Au -¹ to 2.717 A mg Au -¹, and presented an impressively high mass activity retention after the stability test. In situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) analysis confirms that Au-Ti alloy shows a deeper oxidation behaviour. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the formation of Au-TiO x interfaces gives rise to bifunctional synergistic sites, which facilitate the cooperative adsorption of glycerol and hydroxyl species, thereby overcoming the limitations of single-type active sites on Au/C. Meanwhile, CO adsorption further enhances the binding of hydroxyl groups, synergistically promoting deep oxidation of glycerol.

Cantharidin-loaded functional mesoporous titanium peroxide nanoparticles for non-small cell lung cancer targeted chemotherapy combined with high effective photodynamic therapy

Kun Zheng,Runze Chen,Yanxue Sun,Zhenquan Tan,Ye Liu,Xiao Cheng,Junke Leng,Zhaoming Guo,Pengcheng Xu

Background Although photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a potential alternative to conventional chemotherapy, the low reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield of the photosensitizer such as TiO 2 nanoparticles has limited its application. In addition, it is difficult to achieve effective tumor treatment with a single tumor therapy. Methods We used TiOx nanocomposite (YSA-PEG-TiO X ) instead of TiO 2 as a photosensitizer to solve the problem of insufficient ROS generation in PDT. Benefiting from the desired mesoporous structure of TiOx, Cantharidin (CTD), one of the active components of mylabris, is loaded into TiOx for targeted combination of chemotherapy and PDT. The cellular uptake in human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line (A549) and human normal breast cell line (MCF 10A) was evaluated by confocal microscopy. in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The ROS was detected via a chemical probe DCFH-DA and the photodynamic treatment effect of YSA-PEG-TiOx was further evaluated by a living-dead staining. The cell apoptosis was detected by the flow cytometry. Results Our findings showed that the modification of YSA peptide improved the cytotoxicity of YSA-PEG-TiO X /CTD to EphA2 overexpressing A549 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) than non-YSA modified counterparts. In addition, TiOx generated adequate ROS under X-ray irradiation to further kill cancer cells. Flow analysis results also proved the superiority of this combined treatment. Conclusions YSA-PEG-TiO X nanoparticles could significantly increase ROS production under X-ray exposure and provide a new drug delivery nanocarrier for CTD in combination with PDT to achieve effective NSCLC treatment.

Regulating charge/ion transfer kinetic behavior via embedded TiOX in hierarchical TiOX/SiOX@C with optimal expansion stress for lithium storage

Jiawei Ge,Tao Guo,Honglie Shen,Fei Zhou,Yufang Li,Ningyi Yuan,Wangyang Yang,Zehui Wang,Yajun Xu,Jinzhe Zhang,Yimin A. Wu

The charge/ion transfer and structural stability of silicon suboxide (SiO X ) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are plaguing. Titanate oxide (TiO 2 ) shows zero strain and high ion diffusion for lithiation , promising for improving its electrochemical properties . Herein, hybrid TiO X /SiO X @C (local reduction of TiO 2 for TiO X ) was prepared via magnesiothermic reaction and self-assembled as hierarchical microspheres . The embedded TiO X and hierarchical structures buffer the volume-expansion-induced strain of TiO X /SiO X @C for high structural integrity. Oxygen-vacancy sites around Ti and Si atoms for charge transfer tunnel and the heterostructure for fast interfacial charge response improve its electronic conductivity . The introduction of locally reduced Ti atoms alters oxygen structural dispersion, further reducing Li diffusion barriers . Even, the inevitable crack of TiO X /SiO X induces its exposure to the electrolyte, facilitating a compact solid electrolyte interphase layer for stable electrochemical performance. Thus, its open-circuit voltage curve displays a low lithiation platform due to its low polarization for Si-based anodes. These synergetic findings deliver the optimal TiO X /SiO X @C with high cycling stability (951.6 mAh g −1 at 1A g −1 after 1000 cycles with a capacity retention of ∼87.7%) and superb rate capability (516.5 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 ). This work provides a deep understanding of charge/ion kinetics for SiO X -based anodes of LIBs.

Cooperation of Pt and TiOx in the Hydrogenation of Nitrobenzothiazole

Xiaoyan Liu,Yiqi Ren,Maodi Wang,Xiaomin Ren,Jian Liu,Qihua Yang

Selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzothiazole to aminobenzothiazole with metal catalysts is an economical process for the synthesis of pivotal intermediates for thiazole drugs, but it is still very difficult due to the easy deactivation of metal catalysts by sulfur-containing compounds. Herein, we report efficient nitrobenzothiazole hydrogenation using Pt/TiO2 as a catalyst. Pt/TiO2 with the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) effect was found to be more active than Pt/TiO2 without the SMSI effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and S-resistance experiments revealed that the −NO2 group is activated mainly by the oxygen vacancy (Ov) of TiOx in the presence of sulfur compounds and that H species dissociated on Pt spills over to reduce −NO2. The high nitrobenzothiazole hydrogenation activity of Pt/TiO2 can be attributed to a cooperative effect between Pt and TiOx. The generation of SMSI not only induces more Ov sites but also enhances the H-spillover capability. This study provides deep insight into the development of highly efficient platinum-S resistance hydrogenation catalysts.

Ultrathin TiOx Nanosheets Rich in Tetracoordinated Ti Sites for Propane Dehydrogenation

Yiyi Xu,Sai Chen,Xin Chang,Xianhui Wang,Guodong Sun,Zhenpu Lu,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Chunlei Pei,Jinlong Gong

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) exhibits promising potential for propylene production. However, the primary challenge of its application is the development of environmentally benign, low-cost, and high-performance catalysts as alternatives to CrOx- or Pt-based catalysts. This paper describes the design of highly dispersed, around 2-atomic-layer-thick TiOx ultrathin nanosheet catalysts with a high formation rate of propylene (0.175 mol·gTi–1·h–1) and steady-state selectivity toward propylene close to 93% with a low deactivation rate constant (kd) (0.0126 h–1) and robust regeneration performance at 600 °C. A combined study of ex/in situ characterization elucidated tetracoordinated titanium atoms (Ti4c) surrounding oxygen vacancies (Ovac) as the more reactive sites, which effectively promote C–H bond activation and/or H2 desorption by altering the binding state of propane molecules during dehydrogenation and recombining with the H extracted from propane to form H2, leading to more enhanced catalytic activity. This work gives enlightenment to strategy for designing highly efficient oxide catalysts by constructing coordinately unsaturated metal centers in the ultrathin nanosheet structure.

TiOx/Pd interfacial catalysts with controllable geometrical/electronic effects for industrial H2O2 production

Fengyu Zhang,Chenglin Miao,Qian Wang,Mingyu Gao,Dianqing Li,Junting Feng

Aiming at controllable modulating metal−support interactions to achieve an optimal trade-off of geometric/electronic effect in supported catalysts, we developed a reliable approach based on the typical 2D material layered double hydroxide (LDHs). A series of TiO x /Pd/MgTiAl-MMO-X catalysts with adjustable interfacial effect were acquired by loading PdCl 4 2− precursor and further preciously adjusting the topological reduction temperature, based on the regulatory effect of Mg–O–Ti–O–Al–O structure in the support on the reducibility and mobility of Ti 4+ . The catalysts with semi-continuous and accessible TiO x /Pd interface, confirmed by AC-HAADF-STEM, CO chemisorption, XPS, exhibit much higher H 2 O 2 yield than the catalyst with over-encapsulation structure. The TiO x /Pd/MgTiAl-MMO-450 catalysts possessed optimal geometric and electronic structure exhibited the highest activity with TOF of 9.75 s −1 , excellent H 2 O 2 yield of 11.4 g/L, as well as good stability.

Wet-chemistry fabrication of BaTiO3@TiOx for enhanced tribocatalytic degradation of water pollutant

Jian Ji,Guanhui Mai,Peidong Zhang,Jiafen Chen,Yuliang Mai,Jiazhi Chen

Tribocatalysis is an emerging methodology for water purification by harnessing frictional energy. BaTiO3 has shown promising activity in the tribocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants; however, further performance improvement through structural and surface engineering remain challenge. Herein, a facile wet chemistry method was employed to modify the surface of commercial BaTiO3 by depositing TiOx colloids, which enhanced the reaction rate from 0.080 h-1 for pristine BaTiO3 to 0.272 h-1 for BaTiO3 modify by TiOx colloids. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and Raman and the results indicated that the modified BaTiO3 consisted of a BaTiO3 core encapsulated by an ultrathin TiOx shell with an increased concentration of oxygen vacancies. UV-vis, PL spectra, EIS, and DFT calculations demonstrated that the TiOx modification effectively narrows the band gap energy and promotes the separation of electron-hole pairs during tribocatalysis, thereby facilitating the production of more reactive species. Combining EPR analysis and quenching tests, tribogenerated holes were identified as the predominant reactive species surpassing the contributions of •O2- and •OH. This study highlights the efficacy of the wet chemistry approach for the rational design of advanced tribocatalysts, offering new insights into optimizing catalytic materials for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Defective TiOx Sublayers Break the Activity–Stability Trade-Off for Green Flexible Water Photoelectrolysis

Liyuan Liu,Shunqin Luo,Wen-Ning Lu,Hui Song,Huiwen Lin,Sijie Li,Xusheng Wang,Minmin Han,Gaoliang Yang,Jinhua Ye

Catalyst deactivation, especially under the uneven supply of renewable energy, presents a fundamental challenge to advancing net-zero energy technologies, often beyond the reach of conventional modifications. Here, taking TiO2 as a benchmark photoanode, we harness oxygen vacancies just beneath the surface to break the activity–stability trade-off in renewable-energy-driven water photoelectrolysis. These spatially controlled sublayer defects serve as stable electron reservoirs, buffering nonoriented electron migration under power fluctuation while minimizing direct involvement in surface reactions. The proposed architecture enhances structural robustness for over 119 operational cycles and sustains high performance across diverse dynamic environments, including alkaline solutions and natural seawater. By coupling the electron-regulating properties of the defective subsurface with cobalt-phosphate hole extractors, we achieve a photocurrent of 2.67 mA cm–2 at 1.23 VRHE and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.45% under natural sunlight, outperforming most of the TiO2-based photoelectrocatalytic systems. Theoretical modeling suggests that unsaturated Ti3+ sites on subsurface (001) facets confine electrons, stabilizing vacancies, and suppressing charge recombination, collectively enhancing reactivity. This work provides principles for designing industrially relevant catalysts, enabling flexible operation in renewably powered systems.

Bidirectional electron donation in Cu1−Ti pairs on TiOx for efficient nitric oxide electroreduction

Zhang Yan,Yan Ning,Zhou Bing,Zhan Guangming,Wang Jiaxian,Zhao Long,Hu Lufa,Wang Kaiyuan,Xu Junzhou,Cheng Ke,Zhou Lingzhi,Gu Xiang-Kui,Yao Yancai,Zhang Lizhi

Electrocatalytic nitric oxide reduction (NORR) enables the efficient abatement of NO while simultaneously synthesizing valuable ammonia (NH 3 ). However, the strong polarity of NO hinders its effective activation on conventional NORR catalysts because of their single-site interaction mode, wherein either the nitrogen (N) or oxygen (O) atom of NO binds to the catalyst through a unidirectional electron transfer. In this study, we construct dual-atom Cu 1 −Ti pairs on the titanium oxide (TiO x ) substrate by using the complementary affinities of Ti for nitrogen and Cu for oxygen, which simultaneously activates both ends of the N=O bond. The designed Cu 1 −Ti pairs achieve competitive NORR performance with an NH 3 yield of 189.9 μmol h −1 cm −2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 93.7%. In situ techniques and theoretical calculations demonstrate that this dual-atom configuration shifts the mechanism from an end-on adsorption pathway observed on homonuclear pairs to a fully activating side-on mode. By highlighting the importance of adapted active site design in the electrocatalytic activation of polar molecules, this study facilitates the development of next-generation catalysts for complex transformations.

Sputtered TiOx thin film as compact layer for solid-state dye sensitized solar cells

Yanling Fang,Xiaomeng Wang,Xianglong Ai,Jianguo Huang,Qi Wang,Tao Wu

s This study investigates the TiO x compact layers deposited by mid-frequency magnetron sputtering of Ti target under a gaseous atmosphere of Ar/O 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that the compact layer consists of 55% Ti 3+ and 45% Ti 4+ . Current–voltage measurements reveal that the TiO x film effectively impedes the leakage of current at the FTO/hole transporting material (HTM) interface. Current–voltage curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and open-circuit voltage decay are used to evaluate the function of TiO x compact layer in the solid-state solar cells. Results show that the best cell performance is observed in the cell with optimum compact layer thickness of 85   nm, which shows 814% increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) when compared with the bare cell. Thicker TiO x film suppresses the charge recombination more effectively, leading to longer electron lifetime of the solar cells. Nevertheless, higher resistance of the thicker TiO x film decreases its electron transport ability, thereby leading to lower PCE . Besides, compared to liquid-state solar cells, solid-state solar cells require thicker TiO x compact layer to block the electron loss and show larger increase of PCE (highest 27% enhancement in liquid-state solar cells with 85   nm TiO x layer), which corresponds to the much faster charge recombination and ~15 times lower electron-carrier lifetime in solid-state solar cell.

Inverse decoration of TiOx to NiSn alloy nanoparticles for efficient hydrodeoxygenation of m-cresol

Yang Feifei,Li Chengyu,Wang Maolin,Yu Shixiang,Zhao Jiankang,Xu Yao,Zhou Wei,Yi Xiaodong,Ma Ding

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolics is crucial for lignin-to-fuel production via fast pyrolysis. The reaction under atmospheric H 2 pressure offers compatibility with pyrolysis conditions, high aromatic selectivity and low H 2 consumption, but suffers from coking-induced catalyst deactivation. In this work, we report a TiO x -decorated NiSn/SiO 2 catalyst (Ti-NiSn/SiO 2 ), achieving 100% deoxygenation selectivity and enhanced stability in m -cresol HDO. The superior performance stems from: (i) the interfacial synergy between TiO x and NiSn alloy that facilitates C-O bond cleavage with a reduced energy barrier; (ii) the geometric isolation and electron-donating properties of Sn, which suppress undesirable side reactions and mitigate coke formation; and (iii) the inverse TiO x decoration strategy, which enables effective interface chemistry while minimizing acidic sites that could otherwise accelerate coking. This study presents a design strategy for constructing inverse oxide–alloy interface catalysts, offering multi-faceted advantages for HDO and other complex catalytic transformations.

Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to cyclohexanol over Ni–Co bimetallic nanoparticles supported on Al2O3–TiOx

Wenhao Zhang,Fei Wang,Junfeng Feng,Hui Pan

Hydrodeoxygenation is currently an effective strategy for upgrading bio-oils. In this study, Al 2 O 3 –TiO x composite metal oxide was synthesized using the sol–gel method and then impregnated with Ni–Co bimetals for the selective hydrodeoxygenation conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds into cyclohexanol. The impact of different carriers and Ni Co metal content was investigated in detail, with the optimal 10Ni–5Co/Al 2 O 3 –TiO x achieving 93.7 % cyclohexanol yield by completely converting guaiacol within 2 h under mild reaction conditions of 200 °C and 1 MPa H 2 with isopropanol as the solvent. XRD and HRTEM analyses confirmed the presence of Ni and Co in an alloy form. XPS results indicated that the Ti synthesized by the sol–gel method primarily existed in the form of Ti 3+ , with suitable oxygen vacancies that could enhance substrate adsorption and conversion. The reaction pathway for the selective conversion of guaiacol to cyclohexanol was inferred based on the results of GC-MS analysis of byproducts.
