Molten salt-derived Co-intercalated TiS2/MXene heterostructure for boosting alkaline overall water splitting

Jianan He,Adrian Chun Minh Loy,Jining Guo,Ali Zavabeti,Dingqi Wang,Longbing Qu,Raveen Wijesuriya,Yuezhu Xiao,Jitraporn Vongsvivut,Joshua D. Butson,Qinfen Gu,Gang Kevin Li

Fluoride-free one-step molten-salt synthesis of Co-TiS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunction. • In situ growth of Co-TiS 2 on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene modulates electronic structure. • Co-TiS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibits enhanced HER and OER performance. • In situ synchrotron FTIR and DFT reveal boosted catalytic mechanisms. Two-dimensional MXenes have emerged as versatile platforms for electrocatalysis due to their tunable surface chemistry and layered structures. However, the intrinsic activity of MXenes is limited by their vulnerability in oxidizing and alkaline environments. Herein, we report a one-step molten-salt topochemical transformation that simultaneously tailors MXene surface terminations and constructs an in situ Co-TiS 2 /MXene heterointerface. This method effectively disperses hexagonal Co-TiS 2 nanoparticles, increases the exposure of active sites, and prevents the oxidation and aggregation of Ti 3 C 2 T x , significantly enhancing the overall water splitting performance. The incorporation of S promotes the transformation of the Ti 3 C 2 T x to the Co-TiS 2 derivative, modulates the electronic structure, and is predicted by DFT calculation to provide more favorable adsorption energies of reaction intermediates. Combined experimental characterization, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and in situ synchrotron-based Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, together with density functional theory calculations, reveals that the MXene-derived Co-TiS 2 stabilizes the Co atoms, facilitating both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Consequently, the Co-TiS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x (T x  = S, Cl, O) catalyst exhibits enhanced bifunctional activity in 1 M KOH, with lower overpotentials and excellent stability than pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. This study highlights the potential of surface-engineered MXenes and their derivatives for the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts and provides insight into the role of surface terminations in tuning structure and catalytic performance.

Broadband Nonlinear Photoresponse of 2D TiS2 for Ultrashort Pulse Generation and All-Optical Thresholding Devices

Yanqi Ge,Zhengfeng Zhu,Yanhua Xu,Yunxiang Chen,Si Chen,Zhiming Liang,Yufeng Song,Yousheng Zou,Haibo Zeng,Shixiang Xu,Han Zhang,Dianyuan Fan

2D titanium disulfide (TiS 2 ) is recently found to have strong light absorption properties from visible to infrared (IR) region. This feature is highly attractive for applications in nonlinear photonics; however, the mechanism of broadband light–matter interaction is yet to be determined and nonlinear photonic devices are not developed. Here, for the first time, the experimental evidence supporting the mechanism of the broadband nonlinear photoresponse in ultrathin TiS 2 nanosheets ranging from 400 nm to 1390 nm is reported through laser Z -scan measurements. High-performance nonlinear photonic devices operating in the telecommunication band are also demonstrated. A novel saturable absorber (SA) device is successfully fabricated based on a 2D TiS 2 -decorated fiber, which exhibits outstanding ultrashort pulse generation performance with pulse duration of ≈1.04 ps centered at 1569.5 nm. Furthermore, as a stable all-optical thresholding component, the device can effectively attenuate noise and boost the signal-to-noise ratio of the pulse from 1.90 to 10.68 dB. The findings indicate that TiS 2 -based SA devices can be developed into excellent highly nonlinear photonic devices, which may advance the development of TiS 2 -based optical communication technologies in the future.

Mxene-derived stepwise Transformation: Customizing ultrathin TiS2/C nanosheets for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries

Li Zeng,Huibin Guan,Sijiang Hu,Xiaochao Fan,Hanna He,Chuhong Zhang

As a typical two-dimensional transition metal sulfide, TiS 2 holds immense potential for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity and large interlayer spacing. Nevertheless, intrinsic limitations, including poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and structural degradation hinder its development in high-energy-density and long-lasting LIBs. Herein, we prepared an in-situ derived TiS 2 /C composite electrode by harnessing few-layer Ti 3 C 2 MXene as a sacrificial template. Through controlled sequential S substitution within a S-rich environment, we achieved the uniform encapsulation of ultrathin TiS 2 nanosheets within a conductive amorphous carbon matrix. This unique architecture establishes robust and conductive networks that ensure excellent structural integrity while enabling rapid electron/ion transfer kinetics. In addition, the theoretical calculations of binding energy evolution unambiguously confirm the reaction pathways: Ti 3 C 2 MXene→intermediate TiO 2 /C→TiS 2 /C. As a result, the TiS 2 /C electrode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 921.9 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , with a capacity retention rate of 72.7 % after 200 cycles. Remarkably, it sustains discharge capacity of 631.2 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 500 mA g −1 , showcasing superior high-rate cyclability. This work paves the way for the development of energy-dense and long-cycling-life LIBs.

Facile Synthesis of Large and Thin TiS2 Sheets via a Gas/Molten Salt Interface Reaction

Mingsheng Tan,Zhiyong Wang,Junjun Peng,Xianbo Jin

Highly crystalline hexagonal titanium disulfide (TiS 2 ) sheets were synthesized at the gas/liquid interface between TiCl 4 vapor and the dissolved Na 2 S in equimolar NaCl–KCl melts at temperatures between 700°C and 850°C. TiS 2 sheets with sizes of about 10–20 μm and thicknesses of about 50–200 nm have been collected at 700°C–750°C, and much bigger (50–100 μm in sizes) and thicker (1–5 μm in thickness) TiS 2 sheets were obtained at 850°C. The mass transfer preferential growth of an interphase layer and the thermodynamically preferential enlargement of the (001) plane of the hexagonal TiS 2 crystal were thought to have led the formation of large and thin TiS 2 sheets in this proposed gas/liquid interface process. Due to the density difference, the ripe TiS 2 sheets sank into the melt allowing the continuing preparation of TiS 2 sheets. These TiS 2 sheets could spontaneously assemble to TiS 2 membranes or be ultrasonically exfoliated to few-layer TiS 2 sheets with thicknesses less than 5 nm. The presented approach should be potentially extendable to the synthesis of large and thin sheets of other layered metal dichalcogenides in large scale.

Engineering TiO2-TiS2 heterostructure decorated on S, O-functionalized MXene as multifunctional interlayer for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Shiwei Ge,Qian Zhao,Weijian Du,Weikun Jiang,Yu Liu

A TiO 2 -TiS 2 heterostructure decorated on S, O-MXene was successfully constructed. • TiO 2 -TiS 2 heterostructure mitigates MXene stacking and facilitates Li + diffusion. • The design of TiO 2 /TiS 2 ratio can balance the adsorption-catalysis trade-off. • S, O functional groups on MXene offer additional anchoring and catalytic sites. • The SM-TT interlayer enhances the cycle and rate performance of Li-S batteries. The practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is impeded by polysulfides shuttling and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics. Although Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has demonstrated great potential for polysulfides adsorption and conversion, its restacking tendency significantly diminishes its practical effectiveness. To address this critical issue, we designed and fabricated a TiO 2 -TiS 2 heterostructure decorated on sulfur and oxygen-functionalized MXene (SM-TT) through a controlled sulfurization strategy. This well-engineered architecture not only suppresses MXene restacking but also constructs abundant heterointerfaces that synergistically facilitate electron and Li + transport. Moreover, the rationally designed TiO 2 /TiS 2 ratio can well balance the adsorption-catalysis trade-off of polysulfides. Additionally, the sulfur and oxygen functional groups on MXene surface provide additional active sites for polysulfides anchoring and catalytic conversion. When employed as multifunctional interlayer in Li-S batteries, the SM-TT interlayer enables the cell to deliver a high initial capacity of 1292.8 mAh g −1 at 0.1C, maintain 768.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, and exhibit 604.7 mAh g −1 at 1 C. Even under 5 mg cm −2 high sulfur loading, the cell still retains stable capacity of 722.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. This work demonstrates an effective heterointerface engineering strategy for developing high-performance Li-S batteries. Download: Download high-res image (163KB) Download: Download full-size image

A long cycle-life and high safety Na+/Mg2+ hybrid-ion battery built by using a TiS2 derived titanium sulfide cathode

Xiaofei Bian,Yu Gao,Qiang Fu,Sylvio Indris,Yanming Ju,Yuan Meng,Fei Du,Natalia Bramnik,Helmut Ehrenberg,Yingjin Wei

The practical uses of magnesium-ion batteries are hindered by their poor rate capability and fast capacity decay. Moreover, traditional sodium ion batteries suffer from serious safety problems resulting from the sodium dendrites formed on the anode. In order to circumvent these problems, we designed a highly reversible Na+/Mg2+ hybrid-ion battery composed of a metallic Mg anode, a TiS2 derived titanium sulfide cathode and a 1.0 M NaBH4 + 0.1 M Mg(BH4)2/diglyme hybrid electrolyte. The battery showed remarkable electrochemical performances with a large discharge capacity (200 mA h g−1 at the 1C rate), high rate capability (75 mA h g−1 at the 20C rate) and long cycle life (90% capacity retention after 3000 cycles). Moreover, it exhibited excellent safety properties due to dendrite-free Mg deposition of the anode and the high thermal stability of the cathode. These merits demonstrate the great potential of the reported Na+/Mg2+ hybrid-ion battery for large-scale energy storage.

Catalytic Solder Fuses Solid-Solid Interfaces for All-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Qiang Li,Chenxiang Xie,Xin Jiang,Chuannan Geng,Zhonghao Hu,Huilin Ge,Jiwei Shi,Li Wang,Wei Lv,Quan-Hong Yang

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) have garnered significant research interest due to their inherent safety and high energy density. Nevertheless, their practical applications remain constrained by the sluggish sulfur reaction kinetics. While catalytic strategies have been demonstrated to facilitate sulfur conversion, their efficacy is fundamentally constrained by the lack of interfacial continuity. Thus, there is an urgent need for interfacial fusion to achieve such continuity and construct efficient catalytic interfaces. In this work, an amorphous interfacial fusion strategy using TiS 2 as a catalytic “solder”, enabling intimate integration among sulfur, the catalyst, and the solid-state electrolyte is proposed. Upon reacting with sulfur and the sulfide-based solid electrolyte, TiS 2 induces the in situ formation of amorphous TiS 4 and Li-Ti-P-S-Cl interfacial phases. These amorphous phases facilitate interfacial “soldering”, creating integrated catalytic interfaces that enhance Li + transport and catalytic efficiency. As a result, the optimized ASSLSBs show a reversible specific capacity of 720 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 1 C. It also delivers a high areal capacity of 7.05 mAh cm −2 at a sulfur loading of 4.0 mg cm −2 . This interfacial fusion strategy offers a promising pathway toward the practical development of high-performance ASSLSBs.
