A range of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/tetraphenyltin (Ph 4 Sn) nanocomposites were fabricated by hot-pressing. The surface hardness and crystallinity of composites were studied. It revealed that the surface hardness of the composites decreased slightly, and the changing trend of crystallinity was consistent with the hardness. The tribological properties of composites under seawater lubricating conditions were investigated. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficients of the composites almost keep the same but the wear reduced sharply. With the increases of Ph 4 Sn content, the wear of composites first decreases significantly and then increases, meanwhile the friction coefficient remains basically unchanged. The dominant wear mechanism has changed from adhesive wear to plastic deformation and finally to abrasive wear. The addition of Ph 4 Sn particles reduces the sensitivity of the Ph 4 Sn/UHMWPE composites to water and transfers the load to the UHMWPE network, resulting in the wear resistance improved.

In this study, tailored polyethylene reactor blends with the in situ embedding of a weakly entangled ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were synthesized by the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane modified Ziegler–Natta (ZN) catalysts using a two-stage cascade polymerization technique. Holistic improvement of strength/stiffness/toughness was realized by the common injection modeling owing to the enhanced formation of an orientated structure which was verified by the patterns of two-dimensional (2D) small-angle X-ray scattering and 2D wide-angle X-ray diffraction, as well as the fracture morphology. 30 wt % of the less entangled UHMWPE was successfully incorporated into the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix to achieve a synchronously increased tensile strength (52.4 MPa, +97.7%), Young’s modulus (604.2 MPa, +43.6%), and impact resistance (74.4 kJ/m2, +675%), compared with those of the benchmarked HDPE. However, dissipation of a shish-kebab structure was pronounced in the depth direction of the HDPE spline reinforced with the disentangled UHMWPE. This dissipation was proved to partially sacrifice the strength and stiffness. Importantly, the impact strength is greatly enhanced (+140%) due to the cocrystallization effect of the disentangled linear UHMWPE chains with the HDPE matrix. The HDPE matrix reinforced with the weakly entangled UHMWPE presents wider gradient distribution and orientation degree distribution of oriented structures (including shish-kebab and stacked lamella) along the depth direction. Thus, the balance of strength/stiffness/toughness was synergistically improved with the wider gradient distribution of oriented structures. This in situ polymerization method with the weakly entangled UHMWPE offers a promising routine for achieving the high-performance polyethylene commodity.

AlN microspheres were prepared by applying both sol–gel technique and gas reduction nitridation, and then modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) to increase the affinity with the polymer. The KH550 modified AlN microspheres/UHMWPE composites were fabricated by solution mixing and hot pressing technique. Their microstructure, thermal stability, thermal conductivity and dielectric properties were investigated. The AlN microspheres/UHMWPE composite demonstrated much higher thermal conductivity in comparison with the commercial AlN particles/UHMWPE composite. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the KH550 modified AlN microspheres/UHMWPE composites increased slightly with increasing AlN content. The KH550 modified AlN microspheres/UHMWPE composites still had a high surface resistivity (>1014 Ω m) and volume resistivity (>1015 Ω m).

Using a solution-mixing method, this research aimed to fabricate high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite materials with uniform dispersion. By incorporating a small quantity of UHMWPE as a nucleating agent, additional contact points were introduced to enhance the crystallization rate of the HDPE matrix. Thermal stretching experiments were conducted on composite systems with varying UHMWPE contents and molecular weight additions at different temperatures. Elevating the stretching temperature was found to decrease the yield strain and yield strength, extend the stage of tensile plastic deformation, and diminish the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. Notably, stretching at temperatures ranging from 90 to 110°C accentuated the development of internal crystal orientation structures. Under low strain conditions, crystal slip was observed to be concentrated, with single crystals undergoing continuous stretching and breaking, resulting in a decrease in the long period. Conversely, at high strains, the induced formation of oriented lamellar structures was observed. Highlights Prepared HDPE/UHMWPE blends by UHMWPE with varying molecular weights. Analyzed the alterations in the HDPE/UHMWPE blends' internal crystal structure. Influence of UHMWPE addition, temperature on the evolution of crystal structure.

Producing thinner polymer membranes has been a research hotspot to satisfy the increasing demand from diverse application scenarios in the industry. This work used biaxially stretching with an exceptionally high draw ratio near melting point to thin down the excessively petrolatum-swollen UHMWPE gel from millimeters to hundreds of nanometers. Of which the meso- and micro-structural evolution during stretching processing was systematically investigated, especially within the thickness range from microns to submicrons, threading through the micron-thickness boundary. These membranes consisted of oriented smooth fibrils without identifiable overgrowth lamellae but with two obvious melting points, being different from the conventional bead-fiber shape of the typical shish-kebab super-crystalline structures. Moreover, an ionic rejection phenomenon of submicron UHMWPE was observed, which was attributed to the surface potential that emerged when thinning down PE membrane below the threshold of 800 nm. It is the first report of emerging surface potential for the nonpolar neutral polymers as a function of reduced thickness within the submicron range. This work provides insight into the processing of submicron-thin polymer membranes, with the unique structure and properties distinguished from the bulk revealed and explained. These findings may also help the processing and structure-property analysis of submicron membranes of other polymer materials.

A simple, environmentally friendly modification strategy to strengthen the interface between ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was developed. This approach significantly enhances the durability and flame retardancy of UHMWPE fibers. Microscopic morphology and composition analysis verified the successful synthesis of the modified UHMWPE fibers. By precisely adjusting the concentration of the reaction solution and optimizing reaction conditions, hydroxylated UHMWPE exhibited significantly enhanced surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle reducing from 128° to 67°), without compromising its mechanical properties (tensile strength remained above 90%). Durability testing confirmed that the surface hydroxylation of UHMWPE and the grafting of a silane coupling agent (SCA) onto APP synergistically enhanced interfacial bonding. Besides, the binding energy and interfacial shear properties of modified fibers, which were calculated through molecular dynamics simulations, indicated that the hydrogen bond significantly enhanced the interaction between UHMWPE and APP. The combustion test clearly showed the considerable enhancement in the flame retardation of the modified UHMWPE as evidenced by a significant 31% increase in limiting oxygen index as well as substantial reductions of 50.3% and 63.9% in peak heat release rate and total heat release, respectively. The findings presented in this paper provide valuable insights for enhancing the flame retardant properties of UHMWPE fibers, thereby facilitating their widespread utilization in aerospace, military and civil protection. Summary A strategy was proposed to improve interfacial bonding between UHMWPE and APP. Interfacial behavior of UHMWPE/APP was explored by experiment and simulation. UHMWPE fibers after modification possess both flame retardancy and mechanical properties.

By adopting a homemade extension apparatus and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) technique, the structural evolutions of the extracted ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers with different spinning draw ratios were investigated during the poststretching process. Molecular chains oriented along the axis quickly at the early stage of drawing, which is quite different from the situation of drawing with solvents. The crystal regions, which have not melted at higher temperature, show stronger rigidity in the absence of solvents. Rigid characteristics show faster response to the external field. Also, the surface morphologies of fibers after poststretching are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The lamellae stack disordered before stretching, but arranged in order along the draw direction when the draw ratios were larger than 1.

The blended composites with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) as the matrix polymer, sodium polyacrylate (PAANa), and tetraphenyltin (Ph 4 Sn) as fillers were prepared by hot compression molding process. The friction and wear behavior of GCr15 balls with composites mating pairs under the seawater environment was explored, and the friction and wear mechanism was analyzed. The results show that adding PAANa, a polyelectrolyte material, can effectively reduce the friction coefficient of UHMWPE/PAANa/Ph 4 Sn composites. The wear resistance of composites increased significantly with increasing Ph 4 Sn content compared with pure UHMWPE, and the best wear resistance was observed at 1% content. The primary wear mechanism of UHMWPE/PAANa/Ph 4 Sn composites changed from adhesive wear of pure UHMWPE to plastic deformation at lower PAANa and Ph 4 Sn contents and finally to adhesive wear and spalling. This work provides a theoretical basis for preparing and applying other polymer blend composites.

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber has great potential in composite materials due to its low density, high strength, high modulus, and corrosion resistance etc. However, the broad application of UHMWPE fibers has been limited due to the weak interface bonding between the fibers and matrix materials, which is primarily caused by their smooth surface and chemical inert characteristics. This study aimed to enhance the interface performance of UHMWPE fibers by co-modifying their surface through plasma treatment, aminosilane modification, and silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticle modification. Compared to pristine fibers, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the modified fibers and resin increased by over 200%.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can be used as the candidate material for mixed transmission pipelines due to its fabulous wear durability, corrosion resistance, and self-lubricating qualities. Nonetheless, the connection between its microstructures and tribological performance is still unclear, and hence it is difficult to elucidate the mechanism of its wear resistance. Four types of UHMWPE samples (GUR 400Fine, GUR 4012, GUR 4130, and GUR 4150) were chosen for this study, and their tribological properties were tested. The results show that the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate (WR) of GUR 4130 decrease as the temperature increases, but its crystallinity would not be changed while its entanglement density increases and they were confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis. Additionally, GUR 400Fine and GUR 4012 have similar molecular weight, GUR 400Fine's COF and WR are 1.12 and 1.37 times higher than those of GUR 4012 due to its lower entanglement density. Additionally, higher molecular weight causes higher entanglement density and better tribological performance. In conclusion, we have prepared UHMWPE with better wear resistance through a simple processing method.

In order to understand the effect of different carbon materials on the crystallization and melting behavior of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), UHMWPE composites were prepared by different carbon materials through solution mixing in this paper. UHMWPE was oxidized to improve the interfacial interaction between UHMWPE and carbon materials. The UHMWPE composites and oxidized UHMWPE composites were prepared using granular graphite particle (GP), graphite nanoplatelets (GNP), and flaky graphene oxide (GO) as fillers. The effect of the type and the content of carbon materials and the oxidization of UHMWPE on crystallization and melting temperatures, crystallinity, and crystal form of UHMWPE and oxidized UHMWPE composites was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectrum, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that there are coexistence of the heterogeneous nucleation and the hindering effect of crystal growth by carbon materials for UHMWPE crystallization. The different influence of carbon materials on the crystallization and melting behavior of UHMWPE was discussed by the heterogeneous nucleation of carbon materials and the restriction of the macromolecular chain motion of UHMWPE by carbon materials.

A great many of important physical/chemical properties, containing thermal behavior and dynamic properties, are determined by polymer chain conformations. However, the cognition of how nanofillers impact polymer chains is still immature, especially for ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with extremely long molecular chains. Hence, cylindrical multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and lamellar graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) are applied to modify so as to investigate the effect of nanomaterials on UHMWPE chain conformations. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis authenticate that the less nanomaterials incorporated in UHMWPE enable to reduce the density of physical entanglement points, especially for the samples modified by GNP and MWCNT at the same time. Meanwhile, GNP and MWCNT added together in samples may also form a continuous structure, surrounding the UHMWPE molecular chains, and thus blocking the movement of the molecular chain. The reduction of physical entanglement points is beneficial to obtain a lower melting temperature, a higher crystallization temperature and an intenser molecular chains movement for UHMWPE composites. Compared with neat UHMWPE, the optimal performance of storage and loss modulus for UHMWPE/GNP/MWCNT composites is magnified by 169.33% and 100.01% respectively at 60 ℃, but both of them are much smaller than those of pure UHMWPE at higher than 140 ℃.
