Construction of Ru/NiMoOx@NC with multi-interfacial core-shell structures for urea-assisted hydrogen production

Jingwen Ma,Ruiting Wang,Tianai Zhang,Ying Tian,Jinhao Liu,Junbin Li

Urea-assisted hydrogen production is an emerging hydrogen production technology that offers a new approach to the efficient and clean production of hydrogen energy. The low energy consumption urea oxidation reaction replaces the high energy consumption oxygen evolution reaction (OER), significantly reducing the energy consumption of hydrogen production and achieving the resource utilization of pollutants in wastewater (including urea). It is expected to become an important pathway for green hydrogen production with both economic and environmental benefits. The novel composite catalyst Ru/NiMoOx@NC, prepared by supporting ruthenium on a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated nickel-molybdenum oxide support, exhibits highly efficient bifunctional catalytic activity, enabling it to efficiently catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and promote the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Specifically, the introduction of trace ruthenium synergizes with the nickel-molybdenum bimetallic oxide to accelerate H 2 generation. The nitrogen-doped carbon substrate enhances the catalyst's electrical conductivity. Additionally, the incorporation of Mo reduces CO poisoning of Ni active sites during the UOR, further to enhance the catalyst's stability. By varying the loading of Ru, materials with optimal and superior properties are obtained. The Ru/NiMoO x @NC catalysts demonstrate excellent UOR (1.37 V vs. RHE@25 mA cm −2 ; 1.39 V vs. RHE@100 mA cm −2 ) and HER (−98 mV@25 mA cm −2 ) performance under alkaline conditions. The current density of the Ru/NiMoOx@NC electrode remains almost unchanged after cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests and chronoamperometric durability tests, exhibiting excellent catalytic stability. In this system, Ru/NiMoOx@NC serves as both the anode and cathode of the urea-assisted hydrogen production battery, which only requires a voltage of 1.56 V to achieve an output current density of 50 mA cm −2 and demonstrates excellent overall water electrolysis stability. This work provides new insights for the design of bifunctional catalysts for urea-assisted hydrogen production.

Facile synthesis of α/β-FeOOH-based self-supported hierarchical electrocatalysts on arbitrary metal substrates for efficient and hyper-stable HER, OER, UOR, and overall water splitting: A general strategy

Ze-Feng Xu,Chuan-Wu Chen,Ya-Nan Jing,Da-Qiang Liu,Hong-Xin Zhang,Qiu-Xia Lin,Lei-Lei Li,Xing-Liang Yin

Slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis limits hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a lower thermodynamic potential (0.37 V vs. RHE) than OER, offers an energy-saving alternative. Designing robust, multifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation by water electrolysis remains challenging. In this work, a universal two-stage solvothermal strategy was developed to synthesize α/β-FeOOH-based self-supported hierarchical structure catalysts on arbitrary metal substrates, evading polymeric binders. FeOOH/Fe achieves exceptional HER performance, while FeOOH/Ni delivers superior OER/UOR activity, exhibiting extremely-low UOR kinetics with a 12.24 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope. Asymmetric FeOOH/Ni (+)||FeOOH/Fe (−) electrolyzer requires ultralow voltages of 1.799 V (1.0 M KOH), 1.888 V (seawater/1.0 M KOH), and 1.627 V (0.33 M urea/1.0 M KOH) to drive 300 mA cm −2 , surpassing most similar systems. It maintains >9 Faraday efficiency over 100-h at ≥ 300 mA cm −2 , demonstrating industrial-grade stability. The catalysts’ accessible active sites, accelerated charge transfer, rapid kinetics, and superhydrophilicity synergistically enable rapid mass/electron transport and durable operation. This work provides a scalable platform for binder-free electrocatalysts, advancing practical hydrogen production through urea-assisted electrolysis and seawater utilization.

Nanostructured Nickel Nitride with Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for an Efficient Water-Urea Splitting

Feng Wang,Dongsheng Zhao,Linbao Zhang,Liming Fan,Xiutang Zhang,Shengnan Hu

A three-dimensional nickel nitride with reduced graphene oxide composite on nickel foam (s-X, where s represents Ni3N/rGO@NF and the annealing temperature X can be 320, 350, or 380) electrode has been fabricated through a facile method. We demonstrate that s-350 has excellent urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity, with a demanded potential of 1.342 V to reach 10 mA/cm2and bears high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. It provides a low overpotential of 124 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which enables the successful construction of its two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer (s-350||s-350) for water–urea splitting. It merely requires a voltage of 1.518 V to obtain 100 mA/cm2and is 0.145 V lower than that of pure water splitting. This noble metal-free bifunctional electrode is regarded as an inexpensive and effective water–urea electrolysis assisted hydrogen production technology, which is commercially viable. Keywords:bifunctional;Ni foam;electrocatalysis;hydrogen evolution reaction;urea oxidation reaction

Interface engineering of core-shell Ni0.85Se/NiTe electrocatalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution and urea oxidation reactions

Ting Li,Hong Chuan Fu,Xiao Hui Chen,Fei Gu,Nian Bing Li,Hong Qun Luo

The development of highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) electrocatalysts with abundant resources is necessary for green hydrogen production. Ni-based compounds have received attention as the most promising earth-abundant electrocatalysts for OER and UOR, whereas some compounds in this main group, e.g., nickel selenides and tellurides, have received little attention. Herein, we demonstrate the interfacial engineered Ni 0.85 Se/NiTe array on Ni foam as a highly efficient catalyst for the OER, which exhibits an overpotential of 200 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline solutions. Meanwhile, it exhibits a low potential of 1.301 V for the UOR at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . In particular, it even has the potential to be used in methanol oxidation reaction and ethanol oxidation reaction. The vertical NiTe array not only serves as the conductive substrate for highly improving the mass loading of Ni 0.85 Se, but also triggers the strong electron interaction between two components, leading to increased adsorption sites available for the intermediates formed in the OER and UOR on the Ni 0.85 Se surface. This study provides a broad avenue to construct hierarchical nanostructures as outstanding electrocatalysts for efficient OER and UOR.

Industrial-level electrocatalytic urea oxidation: The role of cerium doping in nickel phosphide (Ce-Ni5P4) for tuning electronic structure and promoting surface reconstruction

Yirui Wang,Liuping Liang,Yuqing Tang,Wanling Xiao,Tao Zhou,Peikang Shen,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Surface reconstruction is the key to improving the intrinsic activity of non-precious metal-based catalysts for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In this work, Cerium doped Nickel phosphide (Ce-Ni 5 P 4 ) porous nanosheets were synthesized by conventional hydrothermal and phosphorylation methods. It is found that the introduction of Ce 4f induces the electron transfer from P and Ni to Ce, increasing the chemical state of Ni, boosting the reconstruction of Ni 5 P 4 toward active substances of NiOOH with higher UOR activity and improves the UOR intermediates adsorption behavior on the (210) crystal plane for efficient electrochemical reaction. The results show that Ce-doped Ni 5 P 4 improves the UOR performance of only 1.33 V at 500 mA cm −2 , and exhibits exceptional stability over 120 h. Meanwhile, the AEMWE assembly by Ce-doped Ni 5 P 4 || MoNi foam possess a lower voltage of 2.37 V than RuO 2 ||MoNi foam at 1 A cm −2 , demonstrating an excellent performance in industrial applications. The in-situ Raman confirms the enhanced electrochemical reconstruction process caused by the introduction of Ce, which promotes the large current density UOR process. The theoretical calculations show that the stable (210) crystal plane without reconstruction is activated by the Ce doping, and the modulated electron distribution around the Ni sites weakens the binding energy of the Ni N bond, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for more efficient reaction kinetics. This work provides a hierarchical reconstruction strategy to promote the coupling of activated structures and stable bulks, improving the catalytic UOR activity at large current density and providing new insights for the development of catalysts for industrial applications.

Construction of CeO2/Co(OH)2/FeS@NF nanosheet arrays for high-performance electrocatalytic oxygen evolution/urea oxidation, and overall water/urea splitting reactions

Fei Duan,Yunqin Hu,Junfeng Lin,Mingyue Li,Hao Wu,Zhiqing Cui,Caihong Fang

To develop non-noble electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER)/urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is crucial to boost the efficiency of overall water/urea splitting reaction (OWS/OUS) for H 2 production. Herein, we synthesized novel CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 /FeS nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 /FeS@NF) through a simple two-step hydrothermal and following solvothermal routine. In this special structure, the ultra-thin 2D nanosheet morphology can adequately offer large contact area and thus abundant of active sites, facilitating significantly the mass transfer. Furthermore, the incorporation of FeS into CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 will not only modify the electron structure but also provide a number of phase interfaces, which can improve the inherent electron conductivity and promote the electron transport. More importantly, the rich oxygen vacancies (O v ) sites can vary the coordination of metal centers, modulating both the charge distribution and M−O bonding strength. As results, the CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 /FeS@NF shows superior low overpotentials of 178 mV/1.30 V at 10 mA cm −2 to OER/UOR. The activity keeps its low value of 232 mV/1.375 V even when the current density was increased to as high as 300 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the electrode of CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 /FeS@NF//CeO 2 /Co(OH) 2 /FeS@NF just requires a low cell voltage of 1.41 V to realize OUS at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Specifically, we also realized solar-driven H 2 production. Plenty of H 2 bubbles were continuously generated with a high speed of 600 L h −1  m −2 on the working electrode surface once the solar panel was placed under the natural sunlight.

Achieving high-efficient urea oxidation via regulating the rate-determining step over a V single atom incorporated Co hydroxide electrocatalyst

Baojie Zhang,Changti Pan,Hengjie Liu,Xingshun Wu,Hongliang Jiang,Li Yang,Zeming Qi,Guang Li,Lei Shan,Yunxiang Lin,Li Song,Yong Jiang

Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has emerged as a competitive approach for many energy-related technologies due to the low overpotential and fast reaction dynamics. The main challenge lies in fabricating high-efficient catalysts with optimized electronic structure and understanding the intrinsic structure-related mechanisms. Here, we report a feasible strategy of regulating the rate-determining step (RDS) of UOR via an electrochemical reconstructed Co hydroxide catalyst incorporated with V single atoms. The optimal catalysts exhibit an enhanced UOR performance after V incorporation while remarkably suppressed the competitive oxygen evolution with the potential of 1.54 V (vs RHE) to achieve the current density of 30 mA cm −2 . Operando synchrotron-radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (SR-FTIR) combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that enabled by single atom V incorporation, the RDS of UOR has been changed from the first deprotonation step to the second one with a lower energy barrier of 2.05 eV (vs 2.6 eV), which is thermodynamically favorable for the overall reaction process.
