Assembly of Zr-based coordination polymer over USY zeolite as a highly efficient and robust acid catalyst for one-pot transformation of fructose into 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furan

Junnan Wei,Ting Wang,Huai Liu,Yiqiang Liu,Xing Tang,Yong Sun,Xianhai Zeng,Tingzhou Lei,Shijie Liu,Lu Lin

It is highly desirable but challenging to develop a one-pot process for the transformation of fructose into 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furan (BPMF), a promising biofuel component, because a cascade sequence involving dehydration, reduction, and etherification requires multifunctional acid catalysts. Herein, we propose a facile and firm assembly of Zr/2-methylimidazole (2-MeIM) coordination polymer over USY zeolite (USY@ZrCP) through N-Al bonds formed by the condensation of 2-MeIM and the hydroxyls on USY surface at room temperature. USY@ZrCP possesses an abundance of strong Lewis acid sites with suitable amount of Bronsted acid sites, which are mainly attributed to the highly dispersed Zr(IV) species and the hydroxyls over USY@ZrCP, respectively. Unexpectedly, USY@ZrCP could offer BPMF yield up to 82.6% from fructose in isopropanol by the integration of dehydration, Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley reduction and etherification in a one-pot strategy. This work proposes a novel approach to prepare highly efficient and robust solid acid catalyst for the catalytic valorization of biomass-derived carbohydrates and their derivatives.

Seeds Promoted Interzeolite Transformation of USY and Fumed Silica to Long-Lifetime SSZ-13 Catalysts in Methanol-to-Olefins Reaction via a Grinding Route

Hao Zongyi,Niu Li,Long Xuefeng,Li Hongwei,Wang Dongliang,Ji Dong,Zhao Xinhong

Abstract Two different seed crystals (K–CHA and nano-scaled SAPO-34) were used to promote the rapid interzeolite conversion of USY and fumed silica to pure SSZ-13 zeolite phase via a grinding route. The results show that both seeds can shorten the crystallization time of SSZ-13 zeolite to 24h, which is much shorter than the syntheses in the absence of seeds. The phase purity, morphology, textural parameters, elemental compositions and acid properties of two typical H–SSZ-13 samples with seeds were analyzed by XRD, SEM, N 2 physisorption, EDS and NH 3 –TPD techniques in detail, and compared with the sample without seeds and a reference sample. The results indicate that the introduction of seeds can effectively modify the acid properties of H–SSZ-13, especially their medium strong acid sites. The methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction was employed as a probe to evaluate the catalytic stability of above four H–SSZ-13 catalysts. The results reveal that the catalytic lifetime of the two catalysts using seeds is much longer than that of the one without seeds and the reference sample H–SSZ-13–RS. It was speculated that the appropriate concentration of medium strong acid sites may play a pivotal role in prolonging their catalytic lifetime. Here our findings may throw light on the rational design of long-lifetime H-SSZ-13 catalysts in the MTO reaction.

A comparative study on direct production of ethyl levulinate from glucose in ethanol media catalysed by different acid catalysts

Gui-Zhuan Xu,Chun Chang,Wei-Na Zhu,Bo Li,Xiao-Jian Ma,Feng-Guang Du

Direct production of ethyl levulinate (EL) from glucose catalysed by a liquid acid catalyst (sulfuric acid) and a solid acid zeolite catalyst USY NKF-7 (USY) in ethanol media was investigated in this study. Effects of the initial glucose concentration (C G0), reaction temperature (T), amount of acid catalyst, and water addition on the yields of EL were compared, respectively. The results show that higher yield of EL can be obtained at lower C G0. Higher temperature and acid concentration can accelerate the reaction rate, but the formation rate of the by-products increases more quickly than that of EL. Water addition also can result in the decrease of the yield of EL. Although sulfuric acid is efficient in the production of EL, the USY is more efficient in converting glucose to 5-ethoxymethyl-2-furaldehyde. Moreover, the use of USY can limit the diethyl ether production, and it can be reused for multiple times.

One-pot efficient conversion of glucose into biofuel 5-ethoxymethylfurfural catalyzed by zeolite solid catalyst

Zheng Zhangbin,Wang Chen,Chen Yihang,Wang Shijie,Guo Qianhui,Chang Chun,Tao Hongge,Xu Guizhuan

The production of 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) from renewable and abundant biomass feedstock has attracted great attention due to its potential applications in the chemistry and energy industries. As one of the most abundant biomass, glucose has great significance for the production of EMF in large scale. In this study, an efficient one-pot conversion of glucose into EMF catalyzed by ultra-stable Y zeolite (USY) was developed. The effects of process parameters including reaction temperature, reaction time, reactant concentration, and catalyst dosage on EMF yields were systematically investigated, and the respond surface methodology was further used to investigate the interactions of different parameters. Under the optimum reaction conditions of reaction temperature 200 °C, reaction time 10 min, the substrate concentration 100 g·L −1 , and catalyst dosage 1.8 ωt%, a EMF yield of 39.5 mol% can be obtained. Moreover, the products distribution was analyzed by GC–MS and a plausible reaction pathway of glucose one-pot alcoholysis reaction catalyzed by USY was put forward accordingly. At the same time, XRD, FTIR, BET, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-IR were used to characterize the reusability of USY, and the results showed that the structure of the catalyst was kept stable after being reused. After five cycles, the EMF yield was 31.4 mol% suggesting that the catalyst maintained high catalytic activity. Graphical abstract

Engineering Hierarchical NiMo/USY Catalysts for Selective Hydrocracking of Naphthalene to BTX

Haidong Li,Mingjia Liu,Yifang Zhang,Xiu Chen,Kunyi Zheng,Xilong Wang,Penglei Ni,Jun Ma

The selective hydrocracking of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to BTX requires precise control over catalyst porosity and metal–acid balance. Hierarchical porosity, integrating microporous and mesoporous networks, is pivotal for enhancing mass transport and regulating reaction pathways. USY zeolites were engineered to create distinct hierarchical architectures via HCl, urea, and NaOH–surfactant treatments. HCl treatment constructed a gradient pore acidity system, urea treatment enhanced acidity while preserving microporosity, and NaOH–surfactant fabricated ordered mesopores with reduced acidity. The catalyst with the HCl-engineered gradient pore (NiMo/YH-1) achieved a 91% BTX yield at 425 °C in naphthalene hydrocracking, outperforming others. This performance is attributed to its gradient structure that enforces an optimal “hydrogenation-then-cracking” pathway, highlighting the critical role of tailored hierarchical porosity.

Highly Dispersed Pd Clusters in Zeolite USY for Effective Hydrogenation of Naphthalene

Zhipeng Su,Xueyin Zhang,Tiehong Chen

Pd-based catalysts with different Pd species (Pd ions, Pd clusters, and Pd nanoparticles) in USY were synthesized for naphthalene hydrogenation reaction. Among the catalysts, Pd clusters were prepared by controlled aggregation of Pd ions during the hydrogenation reaction with the assistance of physically adsorbed water in zeolite micropore. The coordination state and electronic structure of Pd species on these catalysts were analyzed to reveal the structure–performance relationship. Due to the high dispersion and optimized electronic structure, Pd clusters showed the highest activity for naphthalene hydrogenation compared to Pd ions and Pd nanoparticles.

Direct synthesis of a high-density aviation fuel using a polycarbonate

Lulin Wang,Fengan Han,Guangyi Li,Min Zheng,Aiqin Wang,Xiaodong Wang,Tao Zhang,Yu Cong,Ning Li

High-density cyclic hydrocarbons were first synthesized with high carbon yields by a one-pot transfer hydrodeoxygenation of a polycarbonate (PC) using isopropanol as the solvent and hydrogen donor at the same time. RANEY® nickel was found to be an effective catalyst for the conversion of the PC in isopropanol. Over it, the pure PC pellet was completely converted to a mixture of C6–C15 oxygenates, aromatics and cycloalkanes after the reaction was carried out at 463 K for 1 h. The catalytic performance of RANEY® Ni was further improved after the introduction of solid acids as co-catalysts. Among the investigated solid acids, ultrastable Y (USY), a commercial acidic zeolite, demonstrated the best promotion effect, which can be explained by its larger pore size and suitable acidity. Under the optimized conditions, an ∼75% carbon yield of C6–C15 cyclic hydrocarbons was achieved from the one-pot transfer hydrodeoxygenation of a chopped DVD disk under the co-catalysis of RANEY® Ni and USY. According to our measurement, the C6–C15 cyclic hydrocarbon mixture as obtained has a high density (0.94 g mL−1), good volumetric net heat of combustion (NHOC) (41.5 MJ L−1) and low freezing point (202 K–188 K). In real applications, it can be used as a potential substitute for currently used high-density aviation fuels.

Synthesis and VOCs adsorption performance of surfactant-templated USY zeolites with controllable mesopores

Aihu Feng,Yang Yu,Le Mi,Yunzhen Cao,Yun Yu,Lixin Song

Adsorption is one of the most effective methods to control the concentration of VOCs pollution. In this work, the hierarchical USY zeolites with size-controlled mesopores are obtained via NH 4 HF 2 -etching and surfactant-templating process. It is found that the non-framework aluminum inside USY is effectively removed by NH 4 HF 2 -etching, and the irregular mesopores inside NH 4 HF 2 -etched USY are transformed into small-sized mesopores with a size of ∼4 nm after subsequent surfactant-templating treatment. The formation mechanism of the small mesopores with controllable pore size is elucidated, and the adsorption properties of NH 4 HF 2 -etched USY-s for different VOCs molecules are demonstrated.

Tailored acidity of silylated Pt/USY catalysts to regulate catalytic performances for phenol hydrogenation

Zhi Wang,Jun Chen,Gaolei Shi,Liuwei Shen,Xueqin Ma,Xingguang Zhang

Pt-based catalysts supported on acidic zeolites are intensively utilized for selective hydrogenation reactions; yet the interplay between zeolite acidity and metal sites remains important research topics, because zeolites feature adjustable acidity (Brønsted/Lewis), strong (hydrothermal-)stability, and highly-ordered porosity for nanoconfinement and shape selectivity. This study systematically identifies the contribution of Brønsted (B) acids and Lewis (L) acid sites in Pt/USY catalysts tailored by controlled introduction of diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS, 0-5.0% wt) for phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone. The modification declined B acid sites (from 145.8 over 1%Pt/USY-1 to 14.7 μmol/g over 1%Pt/5.0%DEDMS-USY) and L acid sites (from 129.3 to 38.4 μmol/g). The reduction in B acid sites considerably suppressed phenol adsorption and thus decreased its conversion from 100% (1%Pt/USY-1) to 19.0% (1%Pt/5.0%DEDMS-USY-1), and the reduction in L acid sites primarily suppressed the cyclohexanone adsorption and thus increased its selectivity from being undetectable (1%Pt/USY-1) to 57.7% (1%Pt/5.0%DEDMS-USY). The silylation could effectively tailor the catalytic activity and selectivity of Pt/USY catalysts and provides valuable insights for designing bifunctional catalysts in selective hydrogenation.

Enhanced oxidation resistance of CuCl@USY-MTMS composites through hydrophobic modification towards stable CO adsorption

Falong Shan,Jingru Dou,Yinghou Li,Yaqi Xu,Guanghui Chen,Pan Zhang,Fei Gao,Jipeng Dong

To address the challenge that Cu + active species in developed Cu + -based adsorbents tend to oxidize to Cu 2+ in humid air, thereby losing their adsorption performance for carbon monoxide, in this study, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was employed as a hydrophobic modifier to modify the Cu + -based CO adsorbent. The hydrophobically modified Cu + -based CO adsorbent effectively shields the Cu + active species from water, thereby significantly inhibiting their oxidative deactivation. The successful grafting of MTMS onto the ultra-stable Y-type zeolite (USY) support was confirmed, thus markedly enhancing the hydrophobicity of the resulting Cu + -based CO adsorbent. The optimized adsorbent, CuCl(4)@USY-MTMS(24%), exhibits a high CO adsorption capacity of 2.61 mmol/g, coupled with high adsorption selectivity for CO/CO 2 and CO/N 2 . Moreover, the MTMS-modified hydrophobic CuCl(4)@USY-MTMS(24%) adsorbent exhibits significantly enhanced oxidation resistance compared to its unmodified counterpart, after aging in 70% relative humidity air for 24 h, it retains 79% of the CO adsorption capacity of pristine adsorbent, far exceeding the 47% retention of the unmodified version. This remarkable performance confirms that the hydrophobically modified adsorbent achieves stable CO separation.

FeCl3·6 H2O/CF3COOH deep eutectic solvent-modified USY zeolite for catalytic upgrading of coal pyrolysis volatiles

Wenyan Mu,Tao Wang,Qu Zhang,Xianze Wang,Haozhao He,Dongling Wu

To achieve efficient upgrading and clean utilization of lignite-derived tar, an integrated zeolite modification strategy based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was developed, in which a Fe-based DES system was constructed with FeCl 3 ·6 H 2 O and CF 3 COOH. This DES realized the simultaneous acid modification and metal incorporation of ultrastable Y (USY) zeolite, thereby simplifying the catalyst preparation process. Characterization results revealed that DES treatment at an optimal molar ratio of 1:9 preserved the structural integrity of the Faujasite framework while inducing a hierarchical “micropore-sacrifice/mesopore-compensation” architecture. Meanwhile, Fe species were introduced uniformly, leading to the reduction of Brønsted acid sites and the enhancement of Lewis acid sites, thereby constructing multifunctional catalytic centers with synergistic acidity and redox activity. Mechanistic analysis demonstrated that DES-induced mesoporosity enhanced mass transfer and diffusion, while the cooperation between Fe redox sites and Lewis acid sites facilitated C-C and C-O bond cleavage as well as aromatization reactions. In the fixed-bed pyrolysis of NMH lignite, the optimized catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance: the light oil fraction in tar increased from 16.86 % to 27.94 %, the relative content of light tar reached 75.61 %, gas yield reached 21.53 %, and PAHs content dropped sharply. Furthermore, the catalyst was confirmed to possess superior reusability in successive runs. This study highlights DES as tunable functional media, serving as an efficient platform for the integrated regulation of zeolite structure, acidity, and activity. Consequently, it provides a novel strategy for fabricating high-performance modified molecular sieve catalysts, which are applicable to the clean and value-added conversion of coal pyrolysis tar.

Optimized Fabrication of Ni–Mo/USY@SBA-15 Core–Shell Catalysts via Acid-Tailored Synthesis for Enhanced Naphthalene Hydrocracking

Jinna Liu,Yi Wang,Yang Li,Peiliang Sun,Zhichao Sun,Ying-Ya Liu,Chong Peng

Encapsulating the USY zeolite within a mesoporous SBA-15 shell is a promising strategy to construct hierarchical catalysts with regulated acidity. However, the acidic conditions required for SBA-15 synthesis pose a stability challenge to the acid-sensitive USY core. In this work, we first systematically investigated the physicochemical evolution of USY under simulated SBA-15 synthesis conditions by varying the acid concentration, temperature, and treatment time. Through XRD, N2 physisorption, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR analysis, the optimal conditions for USY to retain its framework integrity and Brønsted acidity were determined to be ≤1.0 M HCl and treatment time ≤24 h. This acid-tailored optimization is essential for the subsequent fabrication of the core–shell structure. Guided by these findings, the Ni–Mo/USY@SBA-15 core–shell catalyst is successfully prepared and evaluated in naphthalene hydrocracking, achieving 97.8% conversion and 51.6% BTX selectivity, outperforming conventional Ni–Mo/USY (92.6% conversion and 26.0% BTX selectivity). XPS analysis provides direct evidence of the spatially regulated metal-acid distribution and enhanced electron density on active sites. The performance enhancement is attributed to the hierarchical pore structure and the spatially regulated metal-acid distribution, which together enhance mass transfer, optimize acid site accessibility, and suppress overcracking. This study provides an acid-tolerance-guided synthesis strategy for designing high-performance core–shell zeolite catalysts.
