Synergetic effect of both cation and anion doping cobalt oxides on V2C MXene boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Zicong Yang,Yanhui Chen,Yukun Chang,Xiangxian Song,Jinshu Wang,Hongyi Li

In order to enhance the conductivity and catalytic efficiency of non-noble electrocatalyst, an electrocatalysts consisting of ZnCo metallic double oxide with S doping embedded on V 2 C MXene for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is synthesized. Cobalt serves as the primary active site, while zinc contributes to improve conductivity owing to its high electronegativity. Sulfur doping plays a crucial role in reducing the energy barrier of rate determining step of OER. The V 2 C MXene as a substrate can promote conductivity as well, resulting in synergistic effect. The electrocatalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte, surpassing that of IrO 2 commercial electrocatalyst. The potential shows only a minimal ∼5 mV day after 72-h stability test at 20 mA cm −2 . The current density at 1.6 V vs RHE is 2 times that of commercial IrO 2 . Both theoretical calculation and experimental result demonstrate the advantage brought by the incorporation of zinc and sulfur. This work introduces a new idea of synergetic effect in non-noble metallic electrocatalysis.

Enabling High Dielectric Response in PVDF/V2C MXene–TiO2 Composites Based on Nontypical V–F–Ti Bonding and Fermi-Level Overlapping Mechanisms

Yefeng Feng,Furong Zhou,Maolin Bo,Yuehao Huang,Qihuang Deng,Cheng Peng

High dielectric constant and breakdown strength are crucial for high-energy-density polymer/ceramic composites. Anatase-TiO2 with low dielectric constant and V2C MXene with high work function are not satisfactory fillers. In the present work, V2C–TiO2 hybrid filler was in situ synthesized, followed by fabricating poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/V2C–TiO2 composites via solution cast. Compared with PVDF/TiO2 and PVDF/V2C composites, PVDF/V2C–TiO2 composites have an improved high dielectric constant, depressed low dielectric loss, and maintained high breakdown strength. High overall electric traits are ascribed to the synergy of conductive V2C and semiconductive TiO2. Outer and inner surfaces of V2C were ornament-combined by anatase-TiO2 particles having surface point defects as electron traps, contributing to low interface leakage conduction. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, nontypical V–F–Ti-bonding-induced dipole enhancement and Fermi-level (EF) overlapping-induced high electron localization mechanisms improve the dielectric response. Ternary composite with 10 wt % hybrid filler exhibits a dielectric constant of ∼99, a dielectric loss of ∼0.24 at 1 kHz, and a breakdown strength of ∼189 MV/m. This work might enable large-scale preparation of promising polymer/MXene composite dielectrics.

Interfacial fluorine migration-induced low leakage conduction in PVA based high-k composites with V2C MXene-SWCNT switchboard-like ceramic via ab initio MD simulations

Qihuang Deng,Binghe Chen,Maolin Bo,Yefeng Feng,Yuehao Huang,Junquan Zhou

A high dielectric constant and electric breakdown strength are desired in high-energy-density polymer/ceramic composites. Ultrahigh interface leakage conduction between polymer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hinders the development of CNT-filled composite dielectrics. In this work, composite dielectrics bearing V2C MXene-CNT hybrid-particles were fabricated. Environment-friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was employed as the matrix. Interface polarization between PVA and ceramics improved the dielectric constant of composites. A switchboard micro-structure was obtained in the hybrid-ceramic consisting of layered V2C and thread-like single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). This micro-structure led to adsorption-migration of fluorine from V2C to CNTs, triggering Coulomb-blockade zones at CNT surfaces supported by first-principles molecular-dynamics calculations. Interface leakage conduction between CNTs and PVA was depressed by quick-slow-quick (QSQ) electron transmission of CNTs. Compared to PVA/CNT composites, PVA/V2C–CNT composites exhibited a favorable high dielectric constant, strongly depressed low dielectric loss and conductivity, and elevated high breakdown strength. The ternary composite with 5 wt% hybrid-ceramic showed a dielectric constant of ∼232 (122 times that of PVA) and a dielectric loss of ∼0.2 (1.4 times that of PVA) at 100 Hz, as well as a breakdown strength of ∼35 MV m−1 (60% of that of PVA). A balance of high dielectric constant and breakdown strength was achieved in the ternary system. This work might enable large-scale preparation of high-performance composite dielectrics.

Platinum Nanoparticles Regulated V2C MXene Nanoplatforms with NIR-II Enhanced Nanozyme Effect for Photothermal and Chemodynamic Anti-infective Therapy

Xiaojun He,Ya Lv,Yanling Lin,Hong Yu,Yipiao Zhang,Yuhua Tong,Chunwu Zhang

Given the challenge of multidrug resistance in antibiotics, non-antibiotic-dependent antibacterial strategies show promise for anti-infective therapy. V 2 C MXene-based nanomaterials have demonstrated strong biocompatibility and photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) for photothermal therapy (PTT). However, the limitation of V 2 C MXene's laser irradiation to the near-infrared region I (NIR-I) restricts tissue penetration, making it difficult to achieve complete bacterial eradication with single-effect therapeutic strategies. To address this, Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were attached to V 2 C, forming artificial nanoplatforms (Pt@V 2 C). Pt@V 2 C exhibited enhanced PCE (59.6%) and a longer irradiation laser (NIR-II) due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Pt NPs and V 2 C. Notably, Pt@V 2 C displayed dual enzyme-like activity with chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and NIR-II enhanced dual enzyme-like activity. The biocatalytic mechanism of Pt@V 2 C was elucidated using density functional theory. In an in vivo animal model, Pt@V 2 C effectively eliminated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from deep-seated tissues in subcutaneous abscesses and bacterial keratitis environments, accelerating abscess resolution and promoting wound and cornea healing through the synergistic effects of PTT/CDT. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that Pt@V 2 C targeted inflammatory pathways, providing insight into its therapeutic mechanism. This study presents a promising therapeutic approach involving hyperthermia-amplified biocatalysis with Pt NPs and MXene nanocomposites. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

An environmental-friendly resistance inducer in crop protection: V2C MXene nanosheets induce plant resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum via the ET/JA signaling pathway

Yao Wang,Yijia Liang,Xingjun Ma,Yanling Dong,Matthana Klakong,Anbin Wang,Mengle Chen,Tianyu Fan,Xiaohong Xu,Peng Xiao,Wei Ding

Frequent or excessive use of synthetic pesticides can easily lead to pollution of soil and groundwater in management of soil-borne diseases. An environmental-friendly vanadium carbide MXene nanosheets (V 2 C-NSs) have been widely studied in the field of nanomedicine and biomaterials. However, few studies have shown has direct effects of V 2 C-NSs on crop protection and induces plant resistance to disease. In this study, V 2 C-NSs were first prepared by artificial synthesis and characterized, and the resulting material displayed an excellent Tyndall effect. The ability of V 2 C-NSs to promote plant growth and biosafety and its molecular mechanism of inducing plant resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum ( R. solanacearum ) were investigated. The results showed that V 2 C-NSs could increase plant fresh (or dry) weight, promote ROS accumulation, activate plant defense enzymes, and upregulate ethylene (ET) and jasmonic acid (JA) synthesis as well as the expression of ET/JA-responsive genes. Interestingly, the MAPK signaling pathway, biosynthesis of henylpropanoid and flavonoid were also activated, but the salicylic acid biosynthetic pathway was deactivated. Thus, V 2 C-NSs likely induced plant resistance to R. solanacearum via the ET/JA pathway. Furthermore, foliar application of V 2 C-NSs could delay occurrence of tobacco bacterial wilt, while the control efficiency reached 65.52 % nine days post-inoculation (dpi), followed by 57.00 % and 52.99 % at 11 dpi and 13 dpi, respectively, which were significantly greater than the control benzothiadiazole (BTH). Moreover, the biosafety of V 2 C-NSs was evaluated using tobacco seeds (Yunyan87), bacteria and earthworms. This study suggests that V 2 C-NSs can potentially be used as an environmental-friendly plant resistance inducer for controlling bacterial wilt diseases in sustainable crop protection.

Combinations of V2C and Ti3C2 MXenes for Boosting the Hydrogen Storage Performances of MgH2

Haizhen Liu,Chenglin Lu,Xinchun Wang,Li Xu,Xiantun Huang,Xinhua Wang,Hua Ning,Zhiqiang Lan,Jin Guo

Two-dimensional vanadium carbide (V2C) and titanium carbide (Ti3C2) MXenes were first synthesized by exfoliating V2AlC or Ti3AlC2 and then introduced jointly into magnesium hydride (MgH2) to tailor the hydrogen desorption/absorption performances of MgH2. The as-prepared MgH2–V2C–Ti3C2 composites show much better hydrogen storage performances than pure MgH2. MgH2 with addition of 10 wt % of 2V2C/Ti3C2 initiates hydrogen desorption at around 180 °C; 5.1 wt % of hydrogen was desorbed within 60 min at 225 °C, while 5.8 wt % was desorbed within 2 min at 300 °C. Under 6 MPa H2, the dehydrided MgH2–2V2C/Ti3C2 can start to recover hydrogen at room temperature, and 5.1 wt % of H2 is obtained within 20 s at a constant temperature of 40 °C. The reversible capacity (6.3 wt %) does not decline for up to 10 cycles, which shows excellent cycling stability. The addition of 2V2C/Ti3C2 can remarkably lower the activation energy for the hydrogen desorption reaction of MgH2 by 37% and slightly reduce the hydrogen desorption reaction enthalpy by 2 kJ mol–1 H2. It was demonstrated that the combination of V2C and Ti3C2 promotes the hydrogen-releasing process of MgH2 compared with addition of only V2C or Ti3C2, while Ti3C2 impacts MgH2 more significantly than V2C in the hydrogen absorption process of MgH2 at ambient temperatures. A possible mechanism in the hydrogen release and uptake of the MgH2–V2C–Ti3C2 system was proposed as follows: hydrogen atoms or molecules may preferentially transfer through the MgH2/V2C/Ti3C2 triple-grain boundaries during the desorption process and through the Mg/Ti3C2 interfaces during the absorption process. Microstructure studies indicated that V2C and Ti3C2 mainly act as efficient catalysts for MgH2. This work provides an insight into the hydrogen storage behaviors and mechanisms of MgH2 boosted by a combination of two MXenes.

Reaction-dominated combustion control of ammonium perchlorate-based composites by layered V2C MXene

Bo Yang,Peng-fei Tang,Rui Li,Xiao-dong Li,Guang-cheng Yang

Reactive combustion catalysts (RCCs) are emerging materials for the combustion control of ammonium perchlorate (AP)-based propellants owing to their unique ability to control burning rates, high atomic utilization, and high-energy output. This paper reported that the combustion of AP-based propellants can be greatly enhanced by applying vanadium carbide (V 2 C) MXene as RCCs because of its combined advantages of unique reactivity and high chemical energy storage. The decomposition of AP in the presence of V 2 C MXene involves both direct reaction decomposition and catalytic decomposition. V 2 C MXene preferentially reacts with AP as fuel, releasing its chemical energy in the form of heat and forming VO x /C nanosheets. The VO x /C nanosheets formed in situ can serve as catalysts to promote thermal decomposition of the remaining AP. Unlike other combustion catalysts, the direct redox reaction between V 2 C MXene and AP dominates the decomposition of AP. Compared with other RCCs that mainly work through catalytic decomposition, V 2 C MXene exhibits a greatly increased burning rate, a shorter to-steady-state-combustion time, and greater energy release.

Qingmin Shan,Xinpeng Mu,Mohamed Alhabeb,Christopher E. Shuck,Di Pang,Xin Zhao,Xue-Feng Chu,Yingjin Wei,Fei Du,Gang Chen,Yury Gogotsi,Yu Gao,Yohan Dall'Agnese

Recently, a large family of 2D materials called MXenes have attracted much attention in the field of supercapacitors , thanks to the excellent performance demonstrated by Ti 3 C 2 MXene-based electrodes. However, research on MXenes for supercapacitor applications has been primarily focused on Ti 3 C 2 , even though there are more than 20 other members of this large family of materials already available. Studies on other MXenes are emerging, with promising results already achieved by Ti 2 C, Mo 2 C, and Mo 1.33 C in aqueous electrolytes. Yet, many other MXenes remain unexplored in aqueous supercapacitor applications. In this work, we report on the electrochemical behavior of a vanadium carbide MXene , V 2 C, in three aqueous electrolytes. Excellent specific capacitances were achieved, specifically 487 F/g in 1 M H 2 SO 4 , 225 F/g in 1 M MgSO 4 , and 184 F/g in 1 M KOH, which are higher than previously reported values for few micrometer-thick delaminated MXene electrodes. This work shows the promise of V 2 C MXene for energy storage using aqueous electrolytes.

Enhancing role of structurally integrated V2C MXene nanosheets on silicon anode for lithium storage

Tariq Bashir,Xiangyi Li,Shiqi Yang,Yuheng Song,Shaowen Zhou,Jiaqi Wang,Wenhao Zhu,Jie Yang,Jianqing Zhao,Lijun Gao

High-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been actively pursued for practical applications in advanced electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. The silicon (Si) material has been considered as a promising anode candidate due to its impressive lithium storage capacity, but is facing the challenge to ameliorate its cycling and rate performance. We here report a structure integration strategy to overcome major issues of poor capacity retention and slow kinetics during the lithium storage of Si anode, through in situ embedding Si nanoparticles into V 2 C MXene nanosheets . The MXene-supported Si@V 2 C nanocomposite anode reveals significantly enhanced cycling stability and improved lithium storage kinetics compared to that of the pristine Si anode. A high capacity exceeding to 430 mAh g −1 can be retained for 150 cycles at 200 mA g −1 current density. In addition, the conductive MXene supporter has been demonstrated to facilitate lithiation/delithiation processes for the Si by enhancing the charge transfer kinetics, as it is demonstrated by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) and Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (GITT) measurements. Findings from this work may inspire feasible structural designs for the practical deployment of MXene composited Si anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Cell Membrane and V2C MXene-Based Electrochemical Immunosensor with Enhanced Antifouling Capability for Detection of CD44

Meiling Lian,Yuqing Shi,Liuxing Chen,Yongji Qin,Wei Zhang,Jingbo Zhao,Da Chen

The inactive adsorption and interference of biomolecules in electrochemical biosensors is a topic of intense interest. Directly utilizing native cell membranes to endow electrochemical surfaces with antifouling and biocompatible features is a promising strategy, rather than attempting to synthetically replicate complex biological interface properties. In this study, we present a facial and sensitive sandwich-type antifouling immunoassay through platelet membrane/Au nanoparticle/delaminated V2C nanosheet (PM/AuNPs/d-V2C)-modified electrode as the substrate of sensing interface and methylene blue/aminated metal organic framework (MB@NH2-Fe-MOF-Zn) as an electrochemical signal probe. The biosensor perfectly integrates the high conductivity of AuNPs-loaded V2C MXene with the excellent loading property of NH2-Fe-MOF-Zn to improve the electrochemical sensing performance. In addition, the excellent antifouling properties of the homogeneous cell membrane can effectively prevent the non-specific adsorption of model proteins. The obtained antifouling biosensor possesses the capability of ultrasensitive detection of CD44 and CD44-positive cancer cell in complex liquids and exhibits good analytical performance for the analysis of CD44 with a linear range from 0.5 ng/mL to 500 ng/mL. This strategy of developing cell membrane-based biosensing systems with enhanced antifouling capability can be easily expanded to the construction of other complex biosensors, and the advanced biological probes and analytical methods provide a favorable means to accurately quantify biomarkers associated with tumor progression.

V2C MXene Nanozyme Attenuates Sepsis-Induced Gut Injury via Paneth Cell Death and ER Stress Regulation

He-Ping Zuo,Jia Yang,Wei Zhao,Min Yang

Sepsis-associated intestinal injury represents a critical pathological event contributing to multiple organ dysfunction, with its pathogenesis closely linked to excessive oxidative stress and hyperactivated endoplasmic reticulum stress. Current clinical interventions lack the capacity for precise modulation of the intestinal microenvironment, while existing nanozyme systems generally face challenges such as low oral delivery efficiency, insufficient stability, and uncertain biosafety. To address these limitations, we developed a novel oral nanozyme delivery system based on 2D V 2 C MXene. Through surface modification with hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), we constructed a V 2 C@HEC (CV) nanozyme with enhanced physiological stability and intestinal mucoadhesion. In both in vitro and in vivo studies, the CV nanozyme demonstrated significant reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging capacity. Oral administration of CV effectively mitigated intestinal barrier damage and improved survival in a septic mouse model. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the protective effects of CV may be associated with ROS clearance and modulation of endoplasmic reticulum stress, with inhibition of the ATF6/CHOP signaling pathway potentially serving as one underlying mechanism for its cytoprotective function. In summary, this study not only presents a novel nanozyme material with favorable biocompatibility, excellent stability, and a defined antioxidant mechanism, but also provides an innovative materials-based strategy for the treatment of sepsis.
