Construction of Ni2P/VOX Heterostructures Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides for Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jia-ling Li,Daiyongkang Li,Qiaoji Zheng,Liu Liu,Rui Zhang,Dunmin Lin,Yu Huo

The rational design of cost-efficiency electrocatalysts with long-term durability is highly desirable for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but still remains certain challenges. Herein, an interconnected Ni 2 P/VO x heterojunction electrocatalyst based on layered double hydroxides is constructed to facilitate OER process. The hierarchical structure of interacting VO x nanoflowers and Ni 2 P nanoparticles significantly expand the exposure of active sites and accelerate fast mass transport in the OER process. Theoretical investigations reveal that the strong multi-interface coupling effectively moderate the electronic structure of Ni 2 P/VO x and promote the electronic conductivity. Thereby, obviously optimize the adsorption free energy and thus enhance the OER kinetics. As expected, Ni 2 P/VO x achieved remarkable OER performance with a low overpotential of 210 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm −2 along with long-term durability over 50 h and 1000 cycles. This study provides a promising and simple pathway to construct heterojunction materials for efficient water splitting. Graphical The interconnected Ni 2 P/VO x heterojunction electrocatalyst based on layered double hydroxides delivers an ultralow overpotential of 210 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 with excellent long-term stability.

Boosting the Zn-ion energy storage capability of graphene sandwiched nanoporous VOx derived from MXene

Tao Chen,Changyu Yang,Xuewen Hu,Qicheng Zhang,An Cai,Huibin Liu,Yang Li,Wenchao Peng,Fengbao Zhang,Xiaobin Fan

Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are emerging in grid energy storage due to zinc abundance and intrinsic safety. However, developing suitable cathode materials with satisfactory stability and rate capacity remains a great challenge. Herein, a structure of layered MXene derived nanoporous VOx wrapped with graphene nanosheets (rGO–VOx) is constructed as a cathode for ZIBs. The incorporation of two typical 2D materials imparts composites with shortened diffusion pathways and increased electrical conductivity. Thus, the rGO–VOx cathode exhibits a remarkable rate capability of 196 mA h g−1 at 8 A g−1 and long-term stability with 90% retention after over 1200 cycles at 5 A g−1 in an aqueous coin cell. The Zn storage mechanism is also systematically investigated. The layered V2O5 transforms into layered ZnxV2O5·nH2O with larger interspacing upon cycling. NaV6O15 and the in situ formed ZnxV2O5·nH2O co-contribute to the subsequent insertion and extraction process.

Spatially isolated single-site VOx on activated carbon for efficient oxidation of carbohydrates to formic acid

Zhen Zhang,Xiaojian Tian,Yuxiao Sun,Dandan Han,Bang Gu,Dan Wu,Armin Rezayan,Xian Wu,Jingpeng Zhao,Jianshe Wang,Tianliang Lu,Renfeng Nie,Xiaoqin Si,Chunbao Xu,Yongsheng Zhang

Vanadium-based catalysts are widely used in the oxidation of carbohydrates to produce formic acid (FA), a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier, but still suffers from low yield due to the formation of CO 2 . This study found that the spatially isolated VO x on active carbon (AC) can significantly increase FA yield from 43.5 to 72.9% in glucose oxidation compared with free VO x . Two specific roles of AC were revealed. Firstly, the oxygenated functional groups, high surface area and abundant microporous of AC, play a crucial role in the atomic dispersion of VO x , resulting in a heterogeneous, single-site VO x -AC catalyst. The isolated VO x site favors the oxidative C C bond cleavage in glucose via a stepwise α-cleavage pathway, thus improving FA selectivity. Secondly, the conductive AC acts as an electron buffer, which accelerates the catalytic redox cycle between V 5+ and V 4+ of the isolated VO x sites, thus increasing the reaction activity. The prepared single-site VO x -AC catalyst is reusable and can generate a concentrated FA solution (4.7 wt%) by simple filtration of the solid catalyst. This work presents a simple method for the production of H 2 energy carrier from biomass and provides a fundamental basis for designing efficient catalytic systems for aqueous-phase oxidation reactions.

Particle size effects on silyl-chromate/VOx/silica bimetallic catalyst for UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends

Yu Du,Hang Tao,Yang Yang,Changzhi Su,Junrong Wang,Yongnian Wang,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

In this work, four kinds of silica with similar textural properties but different particle size (PS) from 6 to 60 μm were selected as support to prepare silyl-chromate/VO x /silica bimetallic catalysts for ethylene polymerization, thus making it possible to conduct convincing investigation on the effects of catalyst PS over catalytic behaviors and polymer properties. It is found, owing to mass- and heat-transfer limitations, the catalysts with smaller PS showed higher initial activity, while the deactivation in the later stage was more remarkable. Meanwhile, catalysts with smaller PS synthesized bimodal ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/high-density polyethylene in-reactor blends (UHMWPE/HDPE IRBs) with higher molecular weight ( MW ) and narrower molecular weight distribution (MWD). Four PE sample couples with MW increasing from 5 × 10 5 to 10 × 10 5 g mol −1 and PS from 40 to 460 μm were selected for tensile and rheological tests. For each couple with similar MW and MWD, the sample with smaller PS always had larger tensile strength and breaking elongation. The cryogenically fractured surface of the samples made by smaller PE particles showed fewer delamination defects and unfused small particles. The rheological results indicate that higher homogeneity was achieved for the sample with smaller PS, which was reflected by the unexpected higher viscosity and storage modulus.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of molten salt synthesized V2CTx MXene@VOx composite in Zn ion aqueous electrolytes

Jinru Wen,Hongyan Dan,Chunyang Li,Chunlong Dai,Zifeng Lin

The development of MXenes using Lewis acidic salts for etching (MS-MXenes) in molten salts presents a novel, fluorine-free method attracting considerable interest. However, the behavior of various MS-MXenes and their derivatives in aqueous environments remains largely unexplored. Particularly, vanadium-based MXenes demonstrate intriguing properties in Zn ion aqueous electrolytes. Herein, a fluorine-free V 2 CT x MXene@VO x is synthesized by molten salt etching under an argon atmosphere. The electrochemical properties of V 2 CT x @VO x are tested in various aqueous electrolytes, including Zn(TFSI) 2 , ZnSO 4 , ZnBr 2 , ZnAc 2 , and ZnCl 2 solutions. The V 2 CT x @VO x shows high redox capacities in all these Zn ion electrolytes, with the peak performance observed in 1 M ZnBr 2 , achieving a maximum capacity of 172 mAh g −1 at 1 mV s −1 . This performance rivals that of V 2 CT x MXene prepared through wet-chemical methods. These results underscore the potential of MS-MXenes materials in aqueous energy storage applications.

Facile preparation of V2C@VOx nanosheets with excellent multi-enzyme activity and their colorimetric sensing application

Haiyan Wang,Cheng Liu,Yue Zhao,Xinyu Luo,Pengjie Yin,Fuyou Du,Guangsheng Zeng

Nanozymes, as artificial enzymes, overcome the low catalytic efficiency, poor stability, and cost-effectiveness of previous artificial enzymes. In this work, vanadium carbide@vanadium oxide (V2C@VOx) nanosheets were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method using V2C as a precursor and H2O2 as an oxidant. The prepared V2C@VOx nanosheets exhibited excellent multi-enzyme activity such as peroxidase-like activity, superoxide dismutase-like activity, and oxidase-like activity. The entire synthetic process of V2C@VOx nanosheets does not need any additional intercalation agent, strong acid, or base. Meanwhile, the synthesized method of nanozymes was simple, time-saving, and environmentally friendly. In particular, based on the multi-enzyme activity of V2C@VOx nanosheets, the nanozymes catalyzed H2O2 and dissolved O2 to oxidize 3′,3,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Additionally, glucose reacted with glucose oxidase (GOx) to form H2O2 under water bath conditions. Therefore, the colorimetric sensing strategy of glucose was constructed based on the multi-enzyme activity of V2C@VOx nanosheets and the enzymatic reaction of glucose. The detection limit of the sensor was as low as 0.08 μM. Furthermore, the colorimetric method was successfully used to detect glucose in human serum. The sensor exhibited low cost, high stability, and easy construction. Overall, this work proposed a promising strategy based on novel vanadium-based nanozymes with excellent multi-enzyme activity for biomedical detection.

Selective oxidation of methyl glycolate to methyl glyoxylate with molecular oxygen catalyzed by VOx/γ-Al2O3

Jingru Qiu,Guo-Qing Yang,Jiachang Zuo,Xiaoying Liu,Zhipeng Lan,Weikun Chen,Zhong-Wen Liu,Youzhu Yuan

The selective oxidation of methyl glycolate (MG) to methyl glyoxylate (MGO) using molecular oxygen in a fixed-bed reactor represents a greener and more efficient alternative to the traditional batch processing for producing this important fine chemical and intermediate. Despite its potential, detailed understanding of this catalytic reaction is still limited. In our study, VO x / γ -Al 2 O 3 catalysts were identified as effective for the reaction, but their performance strongly depended on the structure of VO x species. The optimal catalyst with nearly monolayer dispersed VO x achieved a high MG conversion of 91% and an MGO selectivity of 71%, alongside maintaining stability for 300 h without noticeable deactivation. At a low V loading of 0.6%, isolated VO x species were formed, exhibiting the highest turnover frequency (TOF) but the lowest MGO selectivity. Increasing the V loading to 3.9% resulted in a blend of less polymeric and isolated VO x species, which decreased the TOF but enhanced MGO selectivity to 59%. With the V loading ranging from 5% to 6.2%, monolayer dispersed VO x became dominant, yielding a lower TOF and the highest MGO selectivity. A further increase in V loading caused the emergence of crystalline V 2 O 5 , which seemed to act as a bystander. Moreover, the redox cycles of V 4+ and V 5+ over the VO x / γ -Al 2 O 3 catalyst played an important role in the selective oxidation of MG to MGO, while the overoxidation of MG to CO 2 might take place through the V 3+ /V 4+ redox pairs, the extent of which was determined by the structure of VO x species. These insights are crucial for developing high-performance VO x -based catalysts for the production of MGO through the selective oxidation of MG.

The Role of V-Species and O-Species on Controlled-Hydrogen-Reduction VOx Surfaces in Cyclohexane Oxidation

Yingwei Li,Shengxin Chen,Ying Jin,Xinxin Li,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu

Graphical A simple and controllable defect construction method for vanadium-oxygen catalysts through hydrogen reduction with TCD detector were used to control the reduction state of CHR-VOx which determines the V-Species and O-Species. Furthermore, the structure-performance relationship and the catalytic pathway were assumed, multi-liganded-oxygen and V 4+ species are the key parameters. A series of controlled-hydrogen-reduction VO x (CHR-VO x ) were prepared after our controllable hydrogen treatment, and CHR-VO x were controlled to be reduced to the states dominated by V 5+ and V 4+ species, subsequently the catalytic roles of V-species and O-species for cyclohexane (CHA) oxidation were explored. As expected, the surface properties of CHR-VO x have occurred remarkable change resulting in a significantly improvement on catalytic performance determined by V-species and O-species. The reduction behavior of the properties was recognized by XPS and Raman. Generally, the moderate-reduced CHR-VO x which possessed most 78.7 % multi-liganded-oxygen ( L O) performed the best conversion for CHA (11.8 %), and the over-reduced CHR-VO x with a large content of V 4+ species (33 %) performed a best selectivity for adipic acid (44.3 %). In this case, L O sites were regarded as the active site to accelerate the activation of CHA, while V 4+ species were regarded as the oxygen vacancies (OVs) through V 4+ −OV to contribute to the further oxidation to adipic acid.

Role of oxygen transfer and surface reaction in catalytic performance of VOx-Ce1–xZrxO2 for propane dehydrogenation

Jiachen Sun,Sai Chen,Donglong Fu,Wei Wang,Xianhui Wang,Guodong Sun,Chunlei Pei,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Jinlong Gong

The bulk oxygen transfer and surface reaction as important parts of the chemical looping-related process are crucial for the rational design of new redox catalysts. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of bulk oxygen transfer and surface reaction in Ce 1– x x O 2 supported VO x redox catalysts for the chemical looping oxidative propane dehydrogenation reaction. It was found that the introduction of Zr dictates the reaction performance of the redox catalyst by modulating the bulk oxygen transfer and surface reaction. The kinetic study reveals that the instantaneous reduction rate of the redox catalysts is determined by the H-abstraction step in the surface reaction. The introduction of Zr can reduce the activation energy of the H-abstraction step, which leads to the enhancement of the instantaneous reduction rate. Meanwhile, the oxygen supply capacity of the cerium oxide is increased by Zr, allowing the surface reaction to proceed over longer durations. Furthermore, the reaction model derived from the kinetics study is validated using a number of (quasi) in situ techniques. This study provides fundamental insights into the role of bulk oxygen transfer and surface reaction in chemical looping or related process.

Peroxidase-mimicking TA-VOx nanobranches for enhanced photothermal/chemodynamic therapy of glioma by inhibiting the expression of HSP60

Qinglong Guo,Mengyuan Yin,Junjuan Fan,Yafei Yang,Tao Liu,Haisheng Qian,Xingliang Dai,Xianwen Wang

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most prevalent malignant brain tumor. It expresses high levels of heat shock protein (HSP60), which is associated with poor prognosis. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can be improved by photothermal therapy (PTT) and facilitate tumor eradication. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel agents that synergize with the tumor killing effects of PTT/CDT by downregulating HSP60. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) databases and clinical cases, this study determined that HSP60 was upregulated and associated with reduced overall survival (OS) in GBM patients. Herein, TA-VO x nanobranches (TA-VO x NBs) were successfully synthesized by a one-step self-assembly procedure, which had excellent photothermal conversion characteristics and improved peroxidase-mimicking activity at elevated temperatures. Moreover, TA-VO x NBs can degrade to VO 2+ in a slightly acidic tumor microenvironment. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that TA-VO x NBs synergized with PTT/CDT and improved glioma eradication under 808 nm irradiation due to the heat-induced ROS generation and the inhibition of HSP60. Furthermore, TA-VO x NBs were rapidly cleared by the kidney and showed good biosafety. Combined with the ease of fabrication, this is a promising nanomaterial that can be introduced for clinical translation in cancer therapy.

Correlation of the Vanadium Precursor and Structure Performance of Porous VOX-SiO2 Solids for Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Propane

Ping Hu,Yan Chen,Xi Yan,Wan-Zhong Lang,Ya-Jun Guo

VOX-SiO2 catalysts have been synthesized by the one-pot method using different vanadium precursors, namely, ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3; VO3–, V5+), vanadium acetylacetonate [V(acac)3; organic complex, V3+], and vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4; VO2+, V4+). The influence of different vanadium precursors on the structure–performance relationship of these catalysts is studied on the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction. The catalysts derived from VO3– attain a mesoporous structure with fairly high specific surface area and large pore volume, while those prepared with V(acac)3 or VOSO4 display a microporous structure. It is noted that VOX-SiO2 catalysts derived from NH4VO3 present a better catalytic performance, and low-polymerized VOX species display better intrinsic activity compared with isolated species. This study may contribute to the selection of vanadium precursors for the one-pot synthesis.

Towards One-Pot Synthesis of Trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE In-Reactor Blends by CrOx/VOx/CpCr/SiO2 Tri-Metallic Catalysts

Shiyang Wang,Lijia Ding,Ruotong Chen,Yang Yang,Jianhao Guo,Xiaofeng Xue,Ning Zhao,Yibin Zhan,Tiedong Xie,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

Trimetallic catalysis provides a potential route for the one-pot production of multimodal PE with balanced mechanical and processing properties. Herein, a series of CrO x /VO x /CpCr/SiO 2 trimetallic catalysts are constructed by grafting CrCp 2 onto a CrO x /VO x /SiO 2 with tunable CrCp 2 loadings and benchmarked against mono- and bimetallic catalysts. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful CrCp 2 immobilization, and the catalyst containing 0.25 wt% CrCp 2 exhibited the highest productivity. Owing to the distinct H 2 sensitivities of the three active sites, both molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) can be efficiently regulated through CrCp 2 loading and H 2 partial pressure, enabling the synthesis of tri- or broad-modal PE in a single reactor. Compared with unimodal PE of comparable MW, the trimodal PE exhibited lower melt viscosity and an improved stiffness-toughness balance.
