Ultrasensitive and ultrafast recovery detection of NO2 at room temperature enabled by VS4/SnS2 hierarchical structure

Yajie Zhang,Mengyu Yuan,Xiaoyu Luo,Jinyue Zheng,Huilan Su,Li Mao,Zhaoqiong Chen

Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) nanoplates demonstrate remarkable potential in NO 2 detection due to their unique physical affinity to NO 2 . However, SnS 2 nanoplate-based sensors suffer from high operating temperatures, inadequate sensitivity, and slow recovery due to intrinsic low conductivity and self-stacking issues. To address these challenges, we fabricated vanadium tetrasulfide/SnS 2 (VS 4 /SnS 2 ) composites via a facile hydrothermal method. Results reveal that the addition of VS 4 significantly reduces the resistance of SnS 2 -based sensor. The sensitivity (1.64 ppm −1 ) of the optimized VS 4 /SnS 2 (1:1) sensor to 1 −5 ppm NO 2 is 546.67 times higher than that of the pristine VS 4 sensor. The sensor exhibits ultrafast complete recovery (2.25 s) and a low limit of detection (90 ppb) at 25 ℃. In addition, the VS 4 /SnS 2 (1:1) sensor displays reliable repeatability, outstanding selectivity and long-term stability. These breakthroughs originate from the formation of n-n junctions and a unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure. This work demonstrates a scalable approach for developing highly sensitive and rapid SnS 2 -based NO 2 sensors operating at room temperature.

PVP-induced synergistic engineering of interlayer, self-doping, active surface and vacancies in VS4 for enhancing magnesium ions storage and durability

Shiqi Ding,Xin Dai,Zhenjiang Li,Chunsheng Wang,Alan Meng,Lei Wang,Guicun Li,Jianfeng Huang,Shaoxiang Li

Magnesium ions batteries (MIBs) provide great potential for the safety and large-scale energy storage, however, its inherent drawbacks, such as the sluggish kinetics, poor cycling life and lower specific capacities of cathode limit their practical application. Herein, PVP is innovatively incorporated with VS 4 and induced synergistic engineering, including the enlarged interchain spacing, V 3+ self-doping, rich sulfur vacancies and the selectively exposing active surface of (020) facets, which results in the fast kinetics of co-intercalation of Mg 2+ and MgCl + , electrolyte infiltration, more active sites exposure, and the strain/stress relaxation during insertion/extraction process for the high stability of structure. Therefore, this novel design of PVP-VS 4 exhibits long-term cycling stability (80% capacity retention at 5000 mA g −1 after 1500 cycles) and exceptional high-rate capability (140 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 with 45 mAh g −1 at 5000 mA g −1 ). The fast reaction kinetics is further confirmed by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and density functional theory (DFT) computations. In addition, the energy storage mechanism and desirable pseudocapacitive behaviors are elucidated through series of ex situ investigations and pesudocapaticance-like contribution analysis. And PVP-VS 4 delivers the higher anti-self-discharge capability cause by PVP incorporation. PVP-induced synergistic engineering opens up a new opportunity for designing a variety of effective intercalation host materials for next-generation energy storage.

Lingli Xing,Kwadwo Asare Owusu,Xinyu Liu,Jiashen Meng,Kun Wang,Qinyou An,Liqiang Mai

As promising electrode materials for aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), transition metal sulfides have attracted significant attention. However, the relative low energy density and poor rate property restrict their further applications. Herein, channels-rich VS 4 nanowire clusters were synthesized via an amine ions-assisted method. When assessed as a cathode for rechargeable AIB, the VS 4 nanowire clusters exhibit superior electrochemical performances , specifically, outstanding rate property (103.32 mAh g -1 at 800 mA g -1 ), good cycling stability and a high reversible capacity of 252.51 mAh g -1 (at 100 mA g -1 ). Moreover, ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in-situ Raman techniques reveal that the as-prepared VS 4 nanowire clusters have stable channels-rich structures, which is favorable for the mass transfer in electrochemical reaction . A mechanism of intercalation is proposed for the electrochemical process . This work takes a step toward the development of high-performance electrode materials for AIBs and provides new insights into the chemistry of AIBs for electrochemical energy storage .

Strategy of cation/anion co-doping for potential elevating of VS4 cathode for magnesium ion batteries

Shiqi Ding,Xin Dai,Zhenjiang Li,Alan Meng,Lei Wang,Guicun Li,Shaoxiang Li

VS 4 is one of the most potential cathode materials candidates for magnesium ion batteries (MIBs). However, it is still challenging for suitably modifying VS 4 to make it process more excellent cycle and rate performance. Herein, modifying VS 4 with cation (Mo)/anion (O) co-doping (MVSO) enhances the electrical conductivity, generates rich sulfur and oxygen vacancies, induces the co-existence of V 3+ /V 4+ and regulates the morphology as hollow flower-like morphology. Benefitted from the advantages of co-doping of Mo and O, MVSO delivers the excellent electrochemical properties, such as the high specific capacity (140.5 mAh g −1 ) under 50 mA g −1 , ultralong cycling life about 1000 cycles with capacity retention ratio of 95.6%, superior rate capability (the capacity could achieve at 75.2 mAh g −1 , when the current density increases to 1000 mA g −1 ), and low self-discharge ratio. Furthermore, the fast reaction kinetics and high capacitive process contribution for MVSO unmasked by the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and pesudocapaticance-like contribution analysis are highlighted. Particularly, the intrinsic Mg 2+ storage mechanism and the high reversible properties caused by Mo-O co-doping is unveiled with comprehensive ex situ characterizations. These findings are supposed to open new avenues for designing cathode materials for applying in future energy storage devices.

Stabilizing Intermediate Phases via Efficient Entrapment Effects of Layered VS4/SnS@C Heterostructure for Ultralong Lifespan Potassium-Ion Batteries

Liang Cao,Bi Luo,Baohe Xu,Jiafeng Zhang,Chunhui Wang,Zhiming Xiao,Shanhong Li,Yangzhong Li,Bao Zhang,Guoqiang Zou,Hongshuai Hou,Xing Ou,Xiaobo Ji

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have appealed increasing attention due to the inexpensive K-element resources and satisfactory electrochemical properties. Presently, there are still challenges for developing desirable anode materials. Two-dimensional metal sulfides exhibit high specific capacity as host for PIBs, yet the dissolution and agglomeration of unstable reaction intermediate K x S y (K 2 S, K 2 S 5 ) inescapability induces large loss of active ingredients and poor reactions reversibility, leading to inferior lifespan. Herein, polar polysulfide VS 4 is introduced into SnS nanosheets with constructing layered VS 4 /SnS heterostructure anchored in graphene scaffold (VS 4 /SnS@C). In this framework, VS 4 with unsaturated bridging (S 2 ) 2– can act as the anchoring sites to stabilize intermediates K x S y with efficient entrapment effects. Moreover, the heterostructure can maintain layered SnS and regulate the distribution of K x S y with high conversion reversibility. The reaction reversibility and intermediate absorptivity are enhanced, as confirmed by in situ X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculations. Consequently, the VS 4 /SnS@C electrode exhibits ultra-long lifespans, which achieves a capacity of 168.4 mAh g –1 at 1 A g –1 after 6000 cycles. This strategy of heterostructure design facilitates the understanding of K-storage mechanisms and significantly enhances the reaction reversibility, providing a thought to address the challenges in metal sulfide anodes toward the development of high-performance PIBs.

Enabling Ultrafast Single Mg2+ Insertion Kinetics of Magnesium-Ion Batteries via In Situ Dynamic Catalysis and Re-equilibration Effects

Rongrui Deng,Shuangshuang Tan,Zhongting Wang,Rong Li,Guanjie Lu,Baihua Qu,Le Tong,Ronghua Wang,Chaohe Xu,Guangsheng Huang,Jingfeng Wang,Aitao Tang,Xiaoyuan Zhou,Fusheng Pan

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) have great potential in large-scale energy storage field with high capacity, excellent safety, and low cost. However, the strong solvation effect of Mg2+ will lead to the formation of solvated ions in electrolytes with larger size and sluggish diffusion/reaction kinetics. Here, the concept of interfacial catalytic bond breaking is first introduced into the cathode design of MIBs by hybriding MoS2 quantum dots with VS4 (VS4@MQDs) as the cathode. The “in situ dynamic catalysis and re-equilibration” effects can catalyze the Cl–Mg bond breaking and trigger single Mg2+ insertion/extraction chemistries, which can significantly accelerate the diffusion and reaction kinetics, as verified by the decreased diffusion energy barriers (0.26 eV for Mg2+ vs 2.47 eV for MgCl+) and fast diffusion coefficient. Benefitting from these dynamic catalysis effects, the constructed VS4@MQD-based MIBs deliver a high discharge capacity of ∼120 mA h g–1 at 200 mA g–1 and a long-term cyclic stability of 1000 cycles at 1 A g–1. The improved performance and detailed characterizations well prove that the active ions in MIBs change from MgCl+/Mg2Cl3+ to Mg2+ with fast kinetics.

Insight into the coordinating mechanism of multi-electron reaction and structural stability induced by K+ pre-intercalation for magnesium ions batteries

Shiqi Ding,Xin Dai,Yuxin Tian,Bo Song,Lei Wang,Guicun Li,Shaoxiang Li,Jianfeng Huang,Zhenjiang Li,Alan Meng

Multi-electron reaction as the appealing alternative can offer higher specific capacity, however, it delivers a tendency to collapse the structure causing cycling instability. Herein, K + pre-intercalation strategy is applied to modify VS 4 /N-TG as cathode for MIBs . As opposed to the structural breakdown caused by multi-electron reaction, pre-intercalated K + not only modulate electronic state, making V 2+ present as instead of partial V 4+ achieving multi-electron reaction, but also act as pillar ions for coordinating the interaction of guest-ions with adjacent host ions to strengthen the framework to maintain structural stability, therefore, K 0.20 VS 4 /N-TG delivers high specific capacity of 190 mAh g –1 , and excellent cycling stability with about near 100% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. This finding gives insights into enabling multi-electron transfer reaction while achieving high structural stability via K + pre-intercalation, shed light on designing viable multi-electron reaction in intercalation type cathode without destroying stable structure for high performance magnesium ions batteries.

Sustainable Cathodic Performances of VS4 in Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries by Cobalt Substitution

Muhammad Kashif Naseem,Mian Azmat,Changliang Du,Muhammad Ismail,Hajra Baig,Rong Jiang,Asif Ali,Meishuai Zou,Youqi Zhu,Chuanbao Cao

Vanadium tetrasulfide (VS4) is one of the most promising cathodic materials for rechargeable magnesium battery systems (RMBSs). Elemental substitution to expand layers, creation of sulfur vacancies, and reduction of particle sizes of VS4 are undoubtedly effective strategies to enhance cathodic performances. Experimental and DFT analysis revealed that valence states of vanadium and cobalt have been elevated from V2+ to V3+ and Co2+ to Co3+ in VS4 and that the Co–S bond length shortened due to cobalt substitution, which resulted in enhanced overall internal polarization in the layered atomic structure of VS4 by increasing cobalt concentrations. This phenomenon of charge accumulation contributes toward regulated magnesiation and accommodated volume expansion while cycling, resulting in the enormous structural stability of VS4 and sustainable battery performance during a long and stable cycling at a cost of 20% capacity diminution as compared to pristine VS4 in RMBS. Hence, 9% CoVS4 demonstrated a capacity of 158 mAh g–1 at a current density of 500 mA g–1 with approximately 98% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. Sustainable cathodic performance is the most desirous feature for commercialization. This work provides insight realization regarding structural limitations and opportunities of VS4 for sustainable cathodic performances in RMBS with non-nucleophilic 0.25 mol/L (R-PhOMgCI)2-A1Cl3/THF (PMC) electrolyte and has laid a theoretical plus experimental foundation for future developments.

Stable multi-electron reaction stimulated by W doping VS4 for enhancing magnesium storage performance

Yuxin Tian,Jiankang Chen,Guofeng Wang,Bing Sun,Alan Meng,Lei Wang,Guicun Li,Jianfeng Huang,Shiqi Ding,Zhenjiang Li

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) hold promise for offering higher volumetric energy density and safety features, attracting increasing research interest as the next post lithium-ion batteries. Developing high performance cathode material by inducing multi-electron reaction process as well as maintaining structural stability is the key to the development and application of RMBs. Herein, multi-electron reaction occurred in VS 4 by simple W doping strategy. W doping induces valence of partial V as V 2+ and V 3+ in VS 4 structure, and then stimulates electrochemical reaction involving multi-electrons in 0.5% W-V-S. The flower-like microsphere morphology as well as rich S vacancies is also modulated by W doping to neutralize structure change in such multi-electron reaction process. The fabricated 0.5% W-V-S delivers higher specific capacity (149.3 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , which is 1.6 times higher than that of VS 4 ), superior rate capability (76 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 ), and stable cycling performance (1500 cycles with capacity retention ratio of 93.8%). Besides that, pesudocapaticance-like contribution analysis as well as galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) further confirms the enhanced Mg 2+ storage kinetics during such multi-electron involved electrochemical reaction process. Such discovery provides new insights into the designing of multi-electron reaction process in cathode as well as neutralizing structural change during such reaction for realizing superior electrochemical performance in energy storage devices.

VS4 anchored on Ti3C2 MXene as a high-performance cathode material for magnesium ion battery

Jinglian Zhu,Xu Zhang,Haiguang Gao,Yuting Shao,Yana Liu,Yunfeng Zhu,Jiguang Zhang,Liquan Li

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (rMBs) are promising techniques suitable for large-scale energy storage systems with low-cost and high safety. However, their development is severely hindered by strong coulombic effect between bivalent Mg 2+ and cathode materials . In this work, two dimensional hierarchical nano-micro hybrids are synthesized by in-situ generating VS 4 nanosheets on carbon-coated Ti 3 C 2 MXene matrix (denoted as VS 4 @Ti 3 C 2 /C). A high-performance rMB system is built by using the hierarchical nano-micro hybrids cathode, magnesium foil anode, and 0.25 M methylpyrrolidinium chloride in 0.25 M 2PhMgCl-AlCl 3 /tetrahydrofuran as the electrolyte. The existence of V–C bond proves that VS 4 is anchored on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 via a strong chemical bond, rather than simply by adsorption. The unique hierarchical nano-micro structure improves the accessibility of the electrolyte and reduces the charge transfer resistance, leading to a high discharge capacity of 492 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , an outstanding rate performance of 129 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 , and excellent cycling performance (over 900 cycles at 500 mA g −1 ). Moreover, reversible intercalation of MgCl  +  into VS 4 @Ti 3 C 2 /C is revealed by investigating the evolution of the hybrids during different electrochemical states. This study will shed light on designing high-performance MXene-based cathode materials for multivalent batteries.

In situ synthesis of VS4/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites as modified separators for lithium-sulfur battery

Dong Chen,Tianjiao Zhu,Shen Shen,Yongan Cao,Yangyang Mao,Wenju Wang,Encai Bao,Hongfu Jiang

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as highly prospective energy storage devices. However, problems such as low sulfur utilization, poor cycle performance, and insufficient rate capability hinder the commercial development of Li-S batteries. Three-dimensional (3D) structure materials have been applied to modify the separator of Li-S batteries to suppress the diffusion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and inhibit the transmembrane diffusion of Li + . A vanadium sulfide/titanium carbide (VS 4 /Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene composite with a 3D conductive network structure has been synthesized in situ by a simple hydrothermal reaction . VS 4 is uniformly loaded on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets through vanadium-carbon(V-C) bonds, which effectively inhibits the self-stacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x . The synergistic action of VS 4 and Ti 3 C 2 T x substantially reduces the shuttle of LiPSs, improves interfacial charge transfer, and boosts the kinetics of LiPSs conversion, consequently increasing the rate performance and cycle stability of the battery . The assembled battery has a specific discharge capacity of 657 mAh g -1 after 500 cycles at 1C, with a high capacity retention rate of 71%. The construction of VS 4 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composite with a 3D conductive network structure provides a feasible strategy for the application of polar semiconductor materials in Li-S batteries. It also provides an effective solution for the design of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Fabrication of vanadium sulfide (VS4) wrapped with carbonaceous materials as an enhanced electrode for symmetric supercapacitors

Xiaofei Wang,Yifu Zhang,Jiqi Zheng,Hanmei Jiang,Xueying Dong,Xin Liu,Changgong Meng

Exploring electrode materials with excellent electrochemical performance is the key to the development of applications in energy storage and conversion . Herein, three-dimensional (3D) vanadium sulfide/carbon nanotubes/reduced graphene oxide (VS 4 /CNTs/rGO) composite is synthesized by a simple one–step hydrothermal method . VS 4 short nanorods cover the both sides of the rGO sheets, and CNTs distribute at the edge of the composite to form a sandwich-like structure, which effectively prevents the accumulation of rGO. Due to the special 3D hierarchical structure, VS 4 /CNTs/rGO exhibits a large specific surface area and a rich pore structure , and the addition of CNTs and rGO also improves the electrochemical properties of VS 4 . At 1 A·g −1 , VS 4 /CNTs/rGO exhibits a capacitance of 497 F·g −1 (1374.0 C·g −1 ) in the voltage range of −1.4 to 1.4 V, which is much higher than those binary materials including CNTs/rGO, VS 4 /CNTs and VS 4 /rGO. The VS 4 /CNTs/rGO symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) device shows a remarkable electrochemical performance in a large potential window up to 2.2 V. The capacitance of VS 4 /CNTs/rGO SSC device can reach 1003.5 mF·cm −2 (2207.6 mC·cm −2 ) at 0.5 mA·cm −2 , and it exhibits an energy density of 6.75 Wh·m −2 (72.07 Wh·kg −1 ) at a power density of 1.38 W·m −2 (14.69 W·kg −1 ). The high capacitance and energy density of the VS 4 /CNTs/rGO composite in the high voltage interval make it as the potential energy storage material .
