Preparation and properties of multiphase solid-solution strengthened high-performance W–Cu alloys through alloying with Mo, Fe and Ni

He Zhang,Xiao-Chun Deng,Guo-Hua Zhang

In this study, high performance W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe alloy samples with additions of Mo (0–6 wt%), Ni and Fe (total content: 2.5 wt% and 5 wt%) were obtained through liquid-phase sintering at lower temperature, with the raw material of ultrafine W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe composite powder. Ultrafine W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe alloy powder with strong sintering activity and uniform composition was obtained by two-stage reduction means composed of carbothermic pre-reduction and hydrogen deep deoxidation steps. Significantly, the bonding ability of W/Cu phase interface and the wettability of two phases are greatly improved due to the presences of Ni and Fe. Moreover, the addition of appropriate Mo content was advantageous to the formation of W–Mo solid solution . All alloy samples achieved higher densification degrees to guarantee that the sintered blocks possess outstanding overall performances. Especially, by adjusting Ni/Fe ratio, the highest tension strength and elongation of were achieved by W-2wt.%Mo-1.75 wt%Ni-0.75 wt%Fe-27.5 wt%Cu sintered block, which were 567 MPa and 10.37%, respectively. Moreover, owing to the presences of W–Mo and Cu–Ni–Fe solid solutions, this alloy also had the highest microhardness and bending strength of 446 HV and 1473 MPa, respectively. As increasing Mo content from 0 wt% to 6 wt%, the compression strength of sintered blocks was improved, and failure strains of all the sintered blocks are close to 100%, respectively. However, even though the Cu matrix network structure is more evenly distributed as a result of the existences of added Ni and Fe, the electronic movement ability of the sintered blocks was reduced, leading to a significant decrease in conductivity.

Synergistic Modulation of Rheological and Electrical Behavior in W–Cu Pastes via Particle Size Gradient and Ball Milling-Induced Morphology Reconstruction

Wang-Zhi Xu,Hai-Sheng Gong,Min-Hui Wang,Di Zhang,Jian Sun,You-Jun Lu,Lai-Ma Luo

To develop high-performance W–Cu conductor pastes for high-temperature co-fired ceramics (HTCC), graded particle-size design and ball-milling modification were systematically investigated. The particle-size distribution and powder morphology were changed, resulting in pastes with improved rheological stability and electrical conductivity. Rheological analysis combined with microstructural characterization revealed that powder size and morphology jointly controlled rheological behavior, sintering densification, and electrical conductivity. The optimized pastes exhibited improved flowability and dense sintered films. Electrical testing showed that resistivity decreased significantly, from 57.77 ± 2.41 mΩ·cm for coarse mixed powders to 5.80 ± 0.37 mΩ·cm for ball-milled powder s. Inspired by previous studies on W–Cu bulk composites, ball milling was employed to induce lamellar particle morphologies, which facilitated interparticle contact, promoted the formation of conductive networks. As a result, dense W–Cu films with reduced resistivity were successfully fabricated, demonstrating the feasibility of W–Cu pastes as advanced metallization materials for HTCC.

Synergistic Effect of Ni/W/Cu on MgAl2O4 for One-Pot Hydrogenolysis of Cellulose to Ethylene Glycol at a Low H2 Pressure

Jun Yu,Jiezhen Liang,Xiaopeng Chen,Linlin Wang,Xiaojie Wei,Youqi Li,Yanmin Qin

Nickel and tungsten, combined with copper, were incorporated into a magnesium aluminum spinel to form a multifunctional catalyst (Ni–W–Cu/MgAl2O4). Characterization results suggested that the adjacent Cu not only facilitated the reduction of W6+ to W5+ with substantial oxygen vacancies but also promoted the reducibility of the Ni species. Besides, the incorporation of Ni, W, and Cu into the support enhanced the catalytic acidity, as well as the L acid sites. The catalyst exhibited a strong synergistic effect between the three metals and the support, resulting in higher catalytic activity for the one-pot hydrogenolysis of cellulose to ethylene glycol. High cellulose conversion (100%) and ethylene glycol yield (52.8%) were obtained, even under a low H2 pressure of 3 MPa.

Ablation behavior of C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B2-W-Cu nozzle-throats in a solid rocket motor environment

Junjie Xu,Wei Sun,Xiang Xiong,Yi Zeng,Qingbo Wen

Conventional ultra-high-temperature ceramic-modified carbon/carbon composites (C/C-UHTCs) face limitations such as excessive erosion in the gas environment of solid rocket motors (SRMs). In contrast, metal-reinforced C/C-UHTCs exhibit enhanced mechanical properties, thermophysical characteristics, and resistance to high-temperature erosion. These advantages indicate significant potential for metal-reinforced C/C-UHTCs to augment the thrust capabilities of SRMs. This study demonstrated the preparation of (Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu cermet modified C/C composites using slurry infiltration and reactive melt infiltration at 1400°C. The microstructure, formation mechanisms, mechanical properties, and thermophysical properties of C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite materials, as well as the ablation behavior of the composite materials under the SRM environment were compared. The results showed that the linear and mass ablation rates of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite material decreased by 112.1% and 160.4% (0.074 mm s −1 , 0.086 g s −1 ), respectively, compared with those of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C composite material. This could be attributed to the formation of a dense, high-strength W-skeleton composite (Hf, Zr, Ti)O 2 oxide layer during the ablation of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite, which effectively resisted erosion from high-temperature, high-speed and high-particle-concentration two-phase gas flow. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing the ablation resistance of C/C-UHTCs and holds significant promise for the development of structural materials in SRM environments.
