The development of highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen production via water electrolysis is crucial for advancing hydrogen energy applications. This study successfully synthesized a Cu-W 2 C heterostructure supported on carbon nanofibers (Cu-W 2 C /CNFs) using a combined solid-phase hot-pressing and pyrolysis strategy. The prepared Cu-W 2 C/CNFs catalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction performance, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline pure water and simulated seawater with overpotentials of only 89 and 102 mV, respectively. The catalyst maintains good stability after 100 h of continuous operation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu-W 2 C heterostructure effectively optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption. Strong synergistic interactions at the heterointerface induce significant interfacial charge redistribution, thereby enhancing HER catalytic activity. This study provides guidance for synthesizing non-precious metal/carbon electrocatalysts via solid-phase hot-pressing technology.

The non-selective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals often plagues heterogeneous oxidation, critically limiting its chemoselectivity for applications like oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Here, we demonstrate a strategy to program the H 2 O 2 activation pathway by designing a ZrO 2 @W 2 C-WO x heterostructure. Interfacial electron transfer from ZrO 2 to W 2 C establishes a built-in electric field, inducing an amorphous, mixed-valent WO x shell. This unique electronic interface enables synergistic dual-site activation of H 2 O 2 at adjacent Zr and WO x motifs, promoting a surface peroxo-intermediate pathway that selectively yields singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). The catalyst exhibits a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 470 h −1 for ODS under mild conditions. Crucially, it demonstrates exceptional chemoselectivity, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) partitioning dominated by 1 O 2 ( 1 O 2 ≫ •O 2 − > •OH). This selectivity ensures robust performance across high sulfur loadings (500–2000 ppm S) and in the presence of fuel-relevant interferents. The catalyst's proven stability and low leaching highlight its industrial potential. By engineering an interfacial charge-transfer heterojunction with a built-in electric field coupled with a redox-active WO x shell, this work provides a blueprint for steering ROS generation toward non-radical pathways for precise, selective oxidation.

Controllably mounting foreign atoms on the surfaces of earth-abundant electrocatalysts strongly improve their surface electronic properties for optimizing the catalytic performance of surficial sites to an unusual level, and provides a good platform to gain deep insights into catalytic reactions . The present work describes, employing ultrafine W 2 C nanoislands (average size: 2.3 nm) monodispersed on the N, P dual-doped carbon frameworks as a model system, how to regulate the atomic phosphorous-mounting effect on the surfaces of W 2 C to derive an active and stable P-mounting W 2 C (WCP) catalyst for both acidic and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Since in situ phosphorus substitution into carbon sites of preformed W 2 C nanoislands gradually proceeds from surfaces to solids, so that using a proper amount of phosphorus sources can readily control the surface mounting level to avoid the mass P-doping into the bulk. By this way, the activity per active site of WCP catalyst with robust stability can be optimized to 0.07 and 0.56 H 2 s −1 at –200 mV overpotential in acid and base, respectively, which reach up to the several-fold of pure-phase W 2 C (0.01 and 0.05 H 2 s −1 ). Theoretical investigations suggest that compared with solid P doping, the P mounting on W 2 C surface can more remarkably enhance its metallicity and decrease the hydrogen release barrier. This finding disclosed a key correlation between surface foreign atom-mounting and catalytic activity , and suggested a logical extension to other earth-abundant catalysts for various catalytic reactions .

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting is among the foremost methods to produce clean and green hydrogen from renewable sources. The practical use of the HER technology is however hindered by the high price and/or the relatively low efficiency of the currently used catalysts. Herein, we report a heterostructured W/W 2 C electrocatalyst featuring vertically stacked interfaces and embedded in N-doped porous graphitic carbon (denoted as W/W 2 C@N-PGC) as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the HER in a wide pH range. The catalyst synthesis, accomplished through a straightforward one-pot method, is both facile and highly efficient, involving freeze-drying a suspension of the starting materials followed by pyrolyzing the obtained dry gel. Density functional theory calculations revealed the crucial role of the W/W 2 C heterojunction in promoting the two key steps of the HER, viz. H OH bond scission and H 2 emission. Electrochemical data confirmed the excellent electrocatalytic capability of W/W 2 C@N-PGC toward the HER process in a wide pH range including alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes. In 1.0 M KOH, we measured a low overpotential of 102 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 ; a long-term stability (up to 24 h) was also realized. The data presented in this work highlight the importance of electrocatalysts with heterojunctions for the HER and the methodology presented in this work may be extended to other contemporary energy-related technologies such as CO 2 reduction, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions.

The selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to their corresponding aryl amines has been investigated over the supported nickel propoted tungsten carbide catalyst on polymeric mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ni–W 2 C/mpg–C 3 N 4 ) in the presence of Lewis acid. The Ni–W 2 C/mpg–C 3 N 4 is demonstrated much higher catalytic activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene than the supported Ni–W 2 C catalyst on activated carbon (Ni–W 2 C/AC) and mesoporous carbon (Ni–W 2 C/CMK-3), and the developed Ni–W 2 C/mpg–C 3 N 4 also exhibits excellent catalytic properties for the selective hydrogenation of various substrates comprising the extra reducible functionalized groups besides nitro group to diverse functionalized arylamines, industrially important compounds, offering more than 92% of yield with 100% selectivity, which may be ascribed to the strengthened mass transfer by using mesoporous support, intentified synergistic effect between Ni–W 2 C/mpg–C 3 N 4 and Lewis acid owing to the basicity of mpg-C 3 N 4 , as well as the improved reducibility of NiO-WO 3 and the dispersion of Ni–W 2 C. It can be also found that the developed catalyst could be easily recovered by filtration and recycled many times without visible loss in its catalytic performance. The significantly improved catalytic properties of supported Ni–W 2 C catalyst fabricated by using mpg-C 3 N 4 as a superior carrier in the presence of Lewis acid allows it to be a promising candidate for the clean and highly-efficient synthesis of diverse functionalized arylamines through the selectivie hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes.

Tungsten carbide (W2C) has emerged as a potential alternative to noble-metal catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to its Pt-like electronic configuration. However, unsatisfactory activity, dilatory electron transfer, and inefficient synthesizing methods, especially for nanoscale particles, have severely hindered its large-scale applications. Herein, a novel heterostructure composed of W2C and tungsten phosphide (WP) embedded in nitrogen-decorated carbon (W2C/WP@NC) was constructed as an efficient HER electrocatalyst. The as-prepared W2C/WP@NC catalyst exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and robust durability toward HER both in acids and bases. More notably, the W2C/WP@NC catalyst demonstrates low overpotentials of 116.37 and 196.2 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and reveals slight potential decays of about 6.4 and 7.64% over 12 h continuous operation in bases and acids, respectively. The overall water-splitting performance was further evaluated using the W2C/WP@NC catalyst as the cathode and commercial RuO2 as the anode in an electrolyzer, which can realize an overall current density of 10 mA cm–2 and maintain long durability of more than 12 h with a small cell voltage of 1.723 V. This work opens up new opportunities for exploring cost-efficient electrocatalysts in sustainable energy conversion.
