Electrochemiluminescent Enantiodiscrimination on Chiral Engineered l-His-ZIF8

Huimin Wang,Guangxin Wang,Ruoxi Liu,Jin Yong Lee,Shufeng Liu,Yingqi Tang,Jing Yu

The development of highly efficient chiral recognition systems by simple and cost-effective means is critical to advance the precise application of chiral molecules. Herein, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) enantioselective recognition platform was constructed based on l-histidine-functionalized zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (l-His-ZIF8). Detailed characterization verified the successful preparation of the chiral l-His-ZIF8 material. It was then applied to the chiral discrimination of six amino acids: cysteine (Cys), tryptophan (Trp), phenylalanine (Phe), glutamic acid (Glu), histidine (His), and proline (Pro). Among them, the system employing Ru(bpy)32+ as the luminophore demonstrated the most efficient chiral recognition of d-Cys over l-Cys, as evidenced by a distinct ECL signal ratio (ECLd-Cys/ECLl-Cys) of 3.3 at 1 mM. A detection limit of approximately 0.193 mM was achieved for Cys enantiomers. Conversely, an inverse chiral recognition was observed for the tryptophan (Trp)/sodium tetraphenylborate (TPB) system, resulting in a stronger ECL response for l-Trp over that for d-Trp (ECLl-Trp/ECLd-Trp = 2.4 at 1 mM). Theoretical calculations indicate that the excellent ECL enantioselectivity stems from the preferential binding of the “host” l-His-ZIF8 with specific “guest” enantiomers (d-Cys or l-Trp) via stronger intermolecular interactions. This preferential binding leads to the formation of more stable diastereoisomers that facilitate electrooxidation of more “guests” to generate a stronger luminescent signal than its isomer. This study establishes a novel strategy for electrochemiluminescent enantiomer discrimination using chiral site-engineered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and opens new avenues for the future of chiral sensing.

Micro-flower like 1T-2H-MoS2@ZIF8@C composites for efficient interfacial solar vapor generation

Yulong Zheng,Hui Zhang,Pei Han,Zhaoshun Zhang,Xueqin Zuo,Qun Yang,Huaibao Tang,Shaowei Jin,Guang Li

Solar distillation can directly produce clean water from non-potable water resources using solar energy and has great promise in desalination systems. However, the improvement of evaporation efficiency through the selection and optimization of suitable candidate materials is still a challenging problem. In this paper, by implementing a customized insulating floating layer and establishing an interfacial evaporation system, we have achieved a successful experiment demonstrating the potential to improve the efficacy of solar steam generation. This system is created by growing 1T-2H mixed-phase molybdenum disulfide composites on the carbonized ZIF8 surface. In this study, the treated composites were well integrated with the thermal insulating floating layer to achieve a stable interfacial structure for photothermal conversion. Furthermore, the cotton threads, known for their great absorbency, created an unhindered pathway for water flow, making it easier for steam to be generated and circulated. Using the above system, under one solar illumination condition, a significant evaporation rate of 1.57 kg m−2 h−1 was attained. The solar steam conversion efficiency of this interfacial heating system under one solar illumination condition was 94.4%. In addition to demonstrating that interface engineering is effective for solar steam production, this work offers a simple and economical water purification method.

A signal “off–on” electrochemical aptamer sensor of Staphylococcus aureus based on ZIF8-derived carbon decorated with platinum nanoparticles

Xiaohua Jiang,Zhiwen Lv,Changquan Rao,Xiaowen Chen

As one of the most poisonous and deadliest pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) poses serious harm to human health, thus designing simple, sensitive and reliable method for its detection is of great significance. Herein, via synthesizing ZIF8-derived carbon decorated with platinum nanoparticles (Pt/C-ZIF-8) hybrids as the nanozyme, an innovatively signal “off–on” electrochemical aptamer (Apt) sensing platform was designed to detect S. aureus for the first time. As for this proposal, the Pt/C-ZIF-8 nanozyme can be able to catalyze 1,2-diaminobenzene to form diaminophenazinc (DAP, an electroactive substance). However, when Pt/C-ZIF-8 bounds to S. aureus -Apt, its enzyme-like activity would be inhibited since the active sites are covered by Apt and the DAP current disappears relatively (signal “off”). Interestingly, with the existence of S. aureus , the activity of Pt/C-ZIF-8 is called back because the specific binding between Apt and S. aureus can induce Apt away from the Pt/C-ZIF-8 surface, thus arising the increase of DAP current (signal “on’). By optimizing several key conditions, the as-designed signal “off–on” nanozyme-based electrochemical Apt sensor offers prominent detection performance for S. aureus , which may also offer a novel, simple and reliable strategy to detect various pathogens through altering the related Apt simply.

Coating preparation of intelligent corrosion inhibition system based on ZIF8-loaded aminopyrene derivatives with intelligent self-healing cooperative tracing of corrosion regions

Ciyang Zhang,Tianxiang Hang,Ziwen Shi,Ming Yang,Keren Lu,Haiyan Jing,Mingzhu Xia,Qingli Hao,Xifeng Xia,Wu Lei

Corrosion is one of the major problems affecting the durability and structural integrity of metallic materials, and the addition of various functional factors to epoxy coatings to impart multifunctional properties has been widely used. However, systems that physically mix multiple functional ingredients to achieve a multifunctional coating can lead to inter-ingredient competition, destabilizing the overall properties. This work developed a smart corrosion inhibition system based on ZIF8 encapsulated 1-Aminostyrene derivative (ZIF8@L1) to address these challenges. When corrosion occurs, the change in pH at the corrosion site disrupts the ZIF8 structure, releasing L1, which forms a protective film on the iron surface, effectively slowing down steel corrosion. As corrosion progresses, L1 coordinates with Fe 3+ , resulting in the cleavage of the C-N bond within the Schiff base and the disappearance of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, leading to fluorescence enhancement, thus enabling real-time visualization of the corrosion area. Experiments have shown that the decomposition products of L1 also have a certain corrosion inhibition effect on iron. To further elucidate the corrosion inhibition mechanism, this study provides an in-depth analysis of the corrosion inhibition effects of the organic small molecules discussed in this paper utilizing various characterization tools and first-principles computational methods. This work proposes an intelligent system that integrates corrosion inhibition, self-healing, and fluorescence tracing, providing a novel perspective for multifunctional intelligent coatings and opening up new pathways for multifunctional composite coatings, which are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Contractile Hairpin DNA-Mediated Dual-Mode Strategy for Simultaneous Quantification of Lactoferrin and Iron Ion by Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering and Fluorescence Analysis

Lu Huang,Hanbing Huang,Zhuomin Zhang,Gongke Li

DNA-mediated self-assembly technology with good sensitivity and affinity ability has been rapidly developed in the field of probe sensing. The efficient and accurate quantification of lactoferrin (Lac) and iron ions (Fe3+) in human serum and milk samples by the probe sensing method can provide useful clues for human health and early diagnosis of anemia. In this paper, contractile hairpin DNA-mediated dual-mode probes of Fe3O4/Ag-ZIF8/graphitic quantum dot (Fe3O4/Ag-ZIF8/GQD) NPs were prepared to realize the simultaneous quantification of Lac by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and Fe3+ by fluorescence (FL). In the presence of targets, these dual-mode probes would be triggered by the recognition of aptamer and release GQDs to produce FL response. Meanwhile, the complementary DNA began to shrink and form a new hairpin structure on the surface of Fe3O4/Ag, which produced hot spots and generated a good SERS response. Thus, the proposed dual-mode analytical strategy possessed excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and accuracy due to the dual-mode switchable signals from “off” to “on” in SERS mode and from “on” to “off” in FL mode. Under the optimized conditions, a good linear range was obtained in the range of 0.5–100.0 μg/L for Lac and 0.01–5.0 μmol/L for Fe3+ and with detection limits of 0.14 μg/L and 3.8 nmol/L, respectively. Finally, the contractile hairpin DNA-mediated SERS-FL dual-mode probes were successfully applied in the simultaneous quantification of iron ion and Lac in human serum and milk samples.

Immobilization of GH78 ⓹-L-Rhamnosidase from Thermotoga petrophilea with High-Temperature-Resistant Magnetic Particles Fe3O4-SiO2-NH2-Cellu-ZIF8 and Its Application in the Production of Prunin Form Naringin

Jin Xu,Xuejia Shi,Xiaomeng Zhang,Zhenzhong Wang,Wei Xiao,Linguo Zhao

To efficiently recycle GH78 thermostable rhamnosidase (TpeRha) and easily separate it from the reaction mixture and furtherly improve the enzyme properties, the magnetic particle Fe 3 O 4 -SiO 2 -NH 2 -Cellu-ZIF8 (FSNcZ8) was prepared by modifying Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 with tetraethyl silicate (TEOS), microcrystalline cellulose and zinc nitrate hexahydrate. FSNcZ8 displayed better magnetic stability and higher-temperature stability than unmodified Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 (FN), and it was used to adsorb and immobilize TpeRha from Thermotoga petrophilea 13995. As for properties, FSNcZ8-TpeRha showed optimal reaction temperature and pH of 90°C and 5.0, while its highest activity approached 714 U/g. In addition, FSNcZ8-TpeRha had better higher-temperature stability than FN. After incubation at 80°C for 3 h, the residual enzyme activities of FSNcZ8-TpeRha, FN-TpeRha and free enzyme were 93.5%, 63.32%, and 62.77%, respectively. The organic solvent tolerance and the monosaccharides tolerance of FSNcZ8-TpeRha, compared with free TpeRha, were greatly improved. Using naringin (1 mmol/l) as the substrate, the optimal conversion conditions were as follows: FSNcZ8-TpeRha concentration was 6 U/ml; induction temperature was 80°C; the pH was 5.5; induction time was 30 min, and the yield of products was the same as free enzyme. After repeating the reaction 10 times, the conversion of naringin remained above 80%, showing great improvement of the catalytic efficiency and repeated utilization of the immobilized α-L-rhamnosidase.

Acid-Unlocked Two-Layer Ca-Loaded Nanoplatform to Interfere With Mitochondria for Synergistic Tumor Therapy

Yilu Zheng,Gareth R Williams,Ran Hu,Sen Tong,Jianxiang Xu,Tong Wang,Yanyan Zhang,Junzi Wu,Fan Li,Yingyu Cai,Li-Min Zhu

Background: The development of selective formulations able to target and kill tumor cells without the application of external energy has shown great promise for anti-tumor therapy. Methods: Here, we report a “nanobomb” that explosively increases Ca content within cells. It can selectively release Ca2+ and generate H2O2 in the tumor microenvironment (TME) by acid-triggered degradation of the two-layer protective shell (ie, unlocking the “double-lock”). This material, termed CaO2@ZIF8:CUR@PAA, comprises a CaO2 core coated with the ZIF-8 framework, which was then loaded with curcumin (CUR) and coated again with polyacrylic acid (PAA).Results: Under the slightly acidic conditions of the TME, the PAA shell (first lock) breaks down first exposing CaO2@ZIF8 and CUR inside the cell. Then, ZIF8 (second lock) is degraded in response to acid to deposit Ca2+, and H2O2. CUR can promote the release of Ca2+ from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cytoplasm, inhibit the outflow of Ca2+, and accumulates a large amount of Ca2+ intracellularly together with exogenous Ca2+ (calcium storms). The powerful calcium storm that causes mitochondrial dysfunction. The presence of a large amount of exogenous H2O2 causes further oxidative damage to tumor cell membranes and mitochondria where intracellular ROS production far exceeds clearance. CaO2@ZIF8:CUR@PAA NPs can induce cell S cycle arrest and apoptosis to inhibit tumor multiplication and growth. Oxidative damage-triggered immunogenic cell death (ICD) in turn leads to the polarization of macrophages to the M1 phenotype, inducing immunogenic cell death and inhibiting tumor cell proliferation and metastasis.Discussion: The acid two-step unlocking nanoplatform is a therapeutic modality that combines calcium storm and oxidative damage. The mode triggers apoptosis leading to ICD of tumor cells. The material induces cycle blockade during treatment to inhibit cell proliferation. Robust in vitro and in vivo data demonstrate the efficacy of this approach and CaO2@ZIF8:CUR@PAA as an anticancer platform, paving the way for nanomaterials in immune-triggered cancer therapy.Highlights: - A new calcium accumulation nanoplatform plays a role in activate antitumor immunity.- Double-locked structure slows down the premature decomposition of CaO2.- The platform allows Ca2+ and H2O2 to accumulate in tumor cells.- This leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and M1 macrophage polarization.- Potent anti-tumor effects are seen both in vitro and in vivo.

Ultrafast carbothermal shock strategy enabled highly graphitic porous carbon supports for fuel cells

Mingjia Lu,Lecheng Liang,Binbin Feng,Yiwen Chang,Zhihong Huang,Huiyu Song,Li Du,Shijun Liao,Zhiming Cui

The electronic conductivity and durability of porous carbon supports can be improved by increasing the degree of graphitization in the material; however, the preparation of highly graphitic porous carbon using conventional furnaces remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a universal and highly efficient carbothermal shock strategy that significantly improves the degree of graphitization of porous carbon supports, including bowl-like carbon, hollow carbon spheres, ZIF8-derived carbon, BP2000, and Ketjen EC 300J. Taking bowl-like carbon as an example, we illustrate the synthesis of a graphitized bowl-like carbon (G-BC-S) support and evaluate the performance of PtCo/G-BC-S in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in rotating disk electrodes (RDE) and H 2 /air PEM single cells. PtCo/G-BC-S exhibits faster ORR kinetics than PtCo/BC and Pt/C, with little loss of activity (25%) and only 13 mV of E 1/2 decay after 20000 cycles accelerated stress testing under 1.0–1.5 V vs . a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The significantly enhanced performance of the PtCo/G-BC-S catalyst arises from the high activity and chemical/structural stability of the PtCo intermetallic nanoparticles and from the high degree of graphitization and well-defined porous structure of the bowl-like carbon support, which confers excellent electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties. This study provides a reliable and universal strategy for the development of high-performance porous carbon supports for practical applications in fuel cells.
