A facile fabrication of lightweight current collector based on used newspaper for flexible zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Chao Yang,Yayue Xiao,Hui You,Zhengwei Liu,Qifan Liu,Limin Zang

The current collector in an electrode plays a crucial role in current transmission, mechanical support, and ion transport. However, most current collectors do not significantly contribute to the device's overall capacity. Therefore, reducing the weight of the current collector can effectively increase the energy density of the device. Here, we propose a simple and inexpensive method to convert used newspapers into flexible collectors by using pencil drawing, which can effectively reduce the weight of collectors. In addition, the graphite coating drawn by pencil can effectively guide the uniform nucleation of Zn 2+ and achieve high reversibility and dendrite-free nature of the zinc anode. Benefiting from this strategy, the as-prepared zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor exhibited a capacity of 81.29 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , with a maximum energy density of 65.03 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 159.80 W kg −1 . Furthermore, it displayed a capacity retention rate of 77% at 1.5 A g −1 after 5000 cycles. This work may also have significance for the study of the lightweighting of other flexible energy storage devices.

A Multifunctional Anti-Proton Electrolyte for High-Rate and Super-Stable Aqueous Zn-Vanadium Oxide Battery

Chen Yangwu,Ma Dingtao,Ouyang Kefeng,Yang Ming,Shen Sicheng,Wang Yanyi,Mi Hongwei,Sun Lingna,He Chuanxin,Zhang Peixin

Large volumetric expansion of cathode hosts and sluggish transport kinetics in the cathode–electrolyte interface, as well as dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution at Zn anode side are considered as the system problems that cause the electrochemical failure of aqueous Zn-vanadium oxide battery. In this work, a multifunctional anti-proton electrolyte was proposed to synchronously solve all those issues. Theoretical and experimental studies confirm that PEG 400 additive can regulate the Zn 2+ solvation structure and inhibit the ionization of free water molecules of the electrolyte. Then, smaller lattice expansion of vanadium oxide hosts and less associated by-product formation can be realized by using such electrolyte. Besides, such electrolyte is also beneficial to guide the uniform Zn deposition and suppress the side reaction of hydrogen evolution. Owing to the integrated synergetic modification, a high-rate and ultrastable aqueous Zn-V 2 O 3 /C battery can be constructed, which can remain a specific capacity of 222.8 mAh g −1 after 6000 cycles at 5 A g −1 , and 121.8 mAh g −1 even after 18,000 cycles at 20 A g −1 , respectively. Such “all-in-one” solution based on the electrolyte design provides a new strategy for developing high-performance aqueous Zn-ion battery.

Zinc hybrid polyester barrier membrane accelerates guided tissue regeneration

Qiao Zhang,Chaoqian Lou,Hang Li,Yanyan Li,Hongjie Zhang,Zimeng Li,Ganggang Qi,Xia Cai,Qiaojie Luo,Lijie Fan,Xiaojun Li,Weiwei Lao,Weipu Zhu,Xiaodong Li

Barrier membranes play a pivotal role in the success of guided periodontal tissue regeneration. The biodegradable barriers predominantly used in clinical practice often lack sufficient barrier strength, antibacterial properties, and bioactivity, frequently leading to suboptimal regeneration outcomes. Although with advantages in mechanical strength, biodegradability and plasticity, bioinert aliphatic polyesters as barrier materials are usually polymerized via toxic catalysts, hard to be functionalized and lack of antibacterial properties. To address these challenges, we propose a new concept that controlled release of bioactive substance on the whole degradation course can give a bioinert aliphatic polyester bioactivity. Thus, a Zn-based catalytic system for polycondensation of dicarboxylic acids and diols is created to prepare zinc covalent hybrid polyester (PBS/ZnO). The atomically-dispersed Zn 2+ ions entering main chain of polyester molecules endow PBS/ZnO barrier with antibacterial properties, barrier strength, excellent biocompatibility and histocompatibility. Further studies reveal that relying on long-term controlled release of Zn 2+ ions, the PBS/ZnO membrane greatly expedites osteogenetic effect in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) by enhancing the mitochondrial function of macrophages to induce M2 polarization. These findings show a novel preparation strategy of bioactive polyester biomaterials based on long term controlled release of bioactive substance that integrates catalysis, material structures and function customization.

Antimicrobial hydrogel microspheres for protein capture and wound healing

Lanjie Lei,Xiangguo Wang,Yulin Zhu,Wentao Su,Qizhuang Lv,Dong Li

Growth factors are vital to regulate cellular responses for wound healing process. Engineered microspheres provide a promising tool for developing effective growth factor-loaded matrix for regenerative medicine therapy. Here, we report a novel multifunctional chitosan microsphere that enables facile one-step capture and efficient growth factor delivery for enhanced wound repair. The microfluidic technique was used to fabricate magnetic chitosan (MCS) microspheres. By immobilization with Zn 2+ ions, the biohybrid MCS allowed for the flexible operation to capture histidine-tagged vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) produced in Escherichia coli (E. coli) . The VEGF-conjugated MCS were then applied onto the wounds to examine their capabilities in promoting wound healing. Zn 2+ and chitosan in MCS exhibited a synergetic antibacterial effect towards both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Using a rat model, we further demonstrated that the microspheres significantly promoted wound healing process, as evidenced by rapid wound closure, induced epithelialization and angiogenesis, and reduced inflammation response. Together, our data indicated the presented MCS as a versatile tool for capturing and locally delivering growth factors, which can be applied to wound repair. Moreover, with the functional flexibility, this biohybrid MCS could be empolyed in a wide range of biomedical applications by conjugating proteins of interest.

Amorphous zinc phosphate nanoclusters loaded polycarbonate thermosensitive hydrogel: An innovative strategy for promoting wound healing

Siwen Chen,Yutong Li,Sihang Ren,Yuanyuan Yang,Zhipeng Hou,Siyu Han,Wanhong Zhang,Jing Guo,Jianshe Hu,Xing Zhang,Liqun Yang

Skin trauma is a matter of great concern for public health, emphasizing the importance of reconstructing the microenvironment at the trauma site to facilitate tissue regeneration. Therefore, the investigation of innovative wound dressings has significant research and clinical implications. In this study, we prepared a thermosensitive hydrogel based on a hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic triblock polycarbonate polymer (PTP), and created a composite hydrogel, PTPH-AZP, by incorporating amorphous zinc phosphate (AZP) nanoclusters. We evaluated the effects of PTPH-AZP on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and the ability to promote skin wound healing. According to the results, PTPH-AZP was found to promote the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of HUVECs through the sustained release of Zn 2+ at appropriate concentrations. In vivo experiments demonstrated that in the early-mid stages of wound healing, PTPH-AZP promotes increases in Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (CD31) and α-Smooth Muscle Actin (α-SMA) content within the wound area, facilitating accelerated re-epithelialization and enhanced collagen deposition. In later healing stages, epidermal thickness in the PTPH-AZP treated group was significantly improved, aligning with surrounding intact skin with no instances of attenuated or hypertrophic scarring observed. The findings from the in vivo study suggested that PTPH-AZP may have a positive impact on vascularization and wound healing. In conclusion, this study presents a promising strategy for skin wound healing, highlighting the potential of PTPH-AZP as an effective therapeutic approach.

Accelerated Bone Regeneration by MOF Modified Multifunctional Membranes through Enhancement of Osteogenic and Angiogenic Performance

Yiyuan Xue,Zhou Zhu,Xin Zhang,Junyu Chen,Xiao Yang,Xiaomeng Gao,Shu Zhang,Feng Luo,Jian Wang,Weifeng Zhao,Chao Huang,Xibo Pei,Qianbing Wan

Owing to the insufficient guidance of new bone formation in orthopedic and craniomaxillofacial surgery, construction of a guided bone regeneration membrane to support vascularized bone regeneration remains a challenge. Herein, an electrospun asymmetric double-layer polycaprolactone/collagen (PCL/Col) membrane modified by metal–organic framework (MOF) crystals is developed. The optimization of the PCL/Col weight ratio (1:1 and 1:1.5) enables the composite membrane with a balanced tensile strength (only fell by 49.9% in wet conditions) and a controlled degradation rate (completely degraded at 12 weeks). The MOF crystals can provide a pH-responsive release of Zn 2+ ions. In vitro experiments indicate that the barrier layer functions to prevent the infiltration of fibrous connective tissue. The MOF crystal layer functions to enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis in vitro. Using a rat calvarial defect model, the MOF crystals exhibit a sign of osteoinductivity along with blood vessel formation after 8 weeks post-surgery. Strikingly, when assessed in a chick chorioallantoic membrane model, the MOF modified membrane demonstrates a significant angiogenic response, which can be envisaged as its outstanding merits over the commercially Col membrane. Therefore, the MOF crystals represent an exciting biomaterial option, with neovascularization capacity for bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Hypoxia-Responsive Micelles Deprive Cofactor of Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase-1 and Sensitize Ferroptotic Ovarian Cancer Therapy

Jiajia Luo,Yaqi Shang,Ning Zhao,Xiaoying Lv,Zheng Wang,Xin Li,Xuan Meng,Yanjun Zhao

ABSTRACT Ferroptosis has been recognized as a promising therapeutic strategy for cancer due to its unique mechanism of action. However, the upregulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) in ovarian cancer leads to resistance to ferroptotic therapy. Zinc ion (Zn 2+ ) serves as the cofactor of SCD1. It was hypothesized that selective deprivation of Zn 2+ from SCD1 could sensitize ferroptotic ovarian cancer therapy. Here, we report a hypoxia-responsive polymer micelle for enhanced ferroptosis of ovarian cancer cells. An SCD1 inhibitor, PluriSIn 1 (Plu), and a ferroptosis inducer, Auranofin (Aur), were co-encapsulated in nitroimidazole-bearing micelles. Under the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, the conversion of nitroimidazole to aminoimidazole triggered the cargo release and induced the depletion of antioxidant molecules (e.g., glutathione, thioredoxin, and NADPH). Meanwhile, because of the strong coordination between aminoimidazole and Zn 2+ compared to that of histidine and Zn 2+ , such conversion can deprive the metal cofactor of SCD1, hence sensitizing the action of Plu and Aur. The proof-of-concept was demonstrated in cell and animal models with minimal systemic toxicity. The current work integrates ferroptosis induction with SCD1 inhibition in a hypoxia-responsive vehicle, offering a promising strategy for addressing the ferroptosis resistance and opening novel avenues for managing difficult-to-treat ovarian cancer.

Ultrasonic Interfacial Engineering of MoS2-Modified Zn Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient Osteomyelitis Sonodynamic Ion Therapy

Xiaobo Feng,Jie Lei,Liang Ma,Qunle Ouyang,Yuxuan Zeng,Hang Liang,Chunchi Lei,Gaocai Li,Lei Tan,Xiangmei Liu,Cao Yang

Osteomyelitis is considered as the most serious bone infection, which can lead to the bone destruction or fatal sepsis. Clinical treatments through frequent antibiotics administration and surgical debridement bring inevitable side effects including drug-resistance and disfigurements. It is urgent to develop an antibiotics-free and rapid strategy to treat osteomyelitis. Herein, a bifunctional sonosensitizer that consists of porphyrin-like Zn single-atom catalysts (g-ZnN 4 ) and MoS 2 quantum dots is developed, which exhibits excellent sonodynamic antibacterial efficiency and osteogenic ability. It is found that the construction of heterogeneous interfaces of g-ZnN 4 -MoS 2 fully activates the adsorbed O 2 due to the increased interface charge transfer, enhanced spin−flip, and reduced activation energy of O 2 . The generated 1 O 2 can kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with an antibacterial efficiency of 99.58% under 20 min of ultrasound (US) irradiation. The Zn single atoms immobilized in g-ZnN 4 can be released steadily in the form of Zn 2+ for 28 days within safe concentration, realizing the great osteoinductive ability of such a sonosensitizer. For the treatment of MRSA-infected osteomyelitis, the inflammation and bone loss can be significantly suppressed through sonodynamic ion therapy. This work provides another strategy for developing high efficiency sonosensitizer through ultrasound interfacial engineering.

Fabrication of magnesium/zinc-metal organic framework on titanium implants to inhibit bacterial infection and promote bone regeneration

Xinkun Shen,Yangyang Zhang,Pingping Ma,Linawati Sutrisno,Zhong Luo,Yan Hu,Yonglin Yu,Bailong Tao,Chuanqiang Li,Kaiyong Cai

The residual bacteria in the second revision surgery caused by infection would further lead to the failure of the implantation. Pathogenic bacteria adhesion to an implant surface not only interfere the functions of bone-formation related cells, but also activate the host immune system, thus resulting in inflammation and osteogenesis inhibition. Thus, to fabricate multifunctional (antibacterial, anti-inflammation and pro-osteogenesis) titanium implants is essential to address this issue. In this work, hybrid magnesium/zinc-metal organic framework (Mg/Zn-MOF74) coating was constructed on alkali-heat treated titanium (AT) surface. The hybrid Mg/Zn-MOF74 coating displayed good stability and its stability was related to the content of Zn 2+ . The MOF74-modified samples were sensitive to bacterial acid microenvironment and displayed strong antibacterial ability against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the degradation of MOF74 coating, leading to alkaline microenvironment (about pH 8.0) and degradation products (2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid and Zn 2+ ). The coating also showed good early anti-inflammatory property to native Ti substrates. In vivo results further verified that AT-Mg/Zn3 implants had high antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties at early stage of implantation, and greatly improved new bone formation around implants both at non-infected and infected femur sites.

Few-Atomic-Layered Co-Doped BiOBr Nanosheet: Free-Standing Anode with Ultrahigh Mass Loading for “Rocking Chair” Zinc-Ion Battery

Bei Long,Qing Zhang,Tengfei Duan,Ting Song,Yong Pei,Xianyou Wang,Chunyi Zhi,Xiongwei Wu,Qianyu Zhang,Yuping Wu

Insertion host materials are considered as a candidate to replace metallic Zn anode. However, the high mass loading anode with good electrochemical performances is reported rarely. Herein, a few-atomic-layered Co-doped BiOBr nanosheet (Co-UTBiOBr) is prepared via one-step hydrothermal method and a free-standing flexible electrode consisting of Co-UTBiOBr and CNTs is designed. Ultrathin nanosheet (3 atomic layers) and CNTs accelerate Zn 2+ and electron transfer respectively. The Co-doping is conducive to the reduced Zn 2+ diffusion barrier, the improved volume expansion after Zn 2+ intercalation, and the enhanced electronic conductivity of BiOBr, verified by experimental and theoretical studies. An insertion-conversion mechanism is proposed according to ex situ characterizations. Benefiting from many advantages, Co-UTBiOBr displays a high capacity of 150 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and a long-term cyclic life with ≈100% capacity attention over 3000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Remarkably, excellent electrochemical performances are maintained even at an ultrahigh mass loading of 15 mg cm −2 . Co-UTBiOBr//MnO 2 “rocking chair” zinc-ion battery exhibits a stable capacity of ≈130 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 during cyclic test and its flexible quasi-solid-state battery shows outstanding stability under various bending states. This work provides a new idea for designing high mass loading anode.

A Clay-Based Quasi-Solid-State electrolyte with high cation selective channels for High-Performance aqueous Zinc-Ion batteries

Haiyan Wang,Zhuo Zhang,Ye Li,Feifei Zhang,Kuo Yang,Bing Xue

A clay-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte was prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) intercalated kaolinite as the raw material to suppress the adverse effects of free water molecules on aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Based on the inherent water absorption and retention properties of clay kaolinite, as well as the interlayer modification, this clay-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte not only achieved a low water content but also exhibited a strong water binding effect, which restricted the HER and side reactions involving water participation. Furthermore, the intercalation of DMSO increased the number of negative charges on the surface of kaolinite, resulting in the formation of a continuous spatial electrostatic field area around the kaolinite particles, which played a role in cation selectivity. The ionic transference number of the quasi-solid-state electrolyte reached 0.91. Additionally, the intercalation of DMSO broadened the interlayer ionic transport channels of kaolinite, further enhancing the transport efficiency of Zn 2+ in the quasi-solid-state electrolyte, achieving uniform deposition of Zn 2+ on the surface of the Zn anode, and suppressing dendrite growth to maintain a stable quasi-solid-state electrolyte/Zn anode interface. Zn||MnO 2 battery assembled with this electrolyte demonstrated a discharge specific capacity of 301 mAh/g at a current density of 60 mA g −1 . The Zn||MnO 2 battery could be stably cycled for 1000 cycles at a current density of 150 mA g −1 , and after 1000 cycles, the battery still maintained a discharge specific capacity of 248.2 mAh/g with a capacity retention rate of 84.8 %, showing excellent capacity performance and cycle stability. The Zn||MnO 2 pouch battery could still provide stable power under heavy pressure, bending, and continuous tapping and had the potential for use in flexible batteries.

A self-healing nanocomposite hydrogel electrolyte for rechargeable aqueous Zn-MnO2 battery

Ping Shen,Yuanyuan Hu,Shanguo Ji,Hao Luo,Cuiping Zhai,Kai Yang

Hydrogel electrolytes are an attractive class of conductive materials for flexible energy storage devices given their reassuring flexibility and stable electrochemical performance . However, it still remains a challenge to assemble the smart battery with mechanical stability and self-healing property when suffering from inevitable physical damages. Here, a novel Zn 2+ -based polyacrylamide/halloysite nanotubes (PAAm/HNTs) nanocomposite hydrogel electrolyte is designed and prepared through rigid HNTs doped into the chemical cross-linked PAAm network. The PAAm/HNTs hydrogel with tensile performance, self-healing property and extended Zn 2+ transport channels was used as hydrogel electrolyte in Zn/MnO 2 batteries which possess an initial capacity of 347 mA h g 1 at a current density of 0.2 A g –1 with good cycle stability. This work offers an effective design method to improve strength , self-healing and fatigue resistance of nanocomposite hydrogel electrolytes which would provide alterative view for the construct of hydrogel electrolytes with desirable properties.
