The zinc orthosilicate, Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics, exhibit great potential as microwave dielectric materials due to their low dielectric constant and ultrahigh quality factor. The solid-state synthesis of Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics often results in the presence of a secondary phase of ZnO, however, leading to significantly lower Q × f values. Cold-isostatic-pressing (CIP) and nonstoichiometry have been proven effective in purifying the Zn 2 SiO 4 but need elaborate process and composition manipulation. In this work, it was found that the particle size of SiO 2 plays a crucial role in purifying the Zn 2 SiO 4 phase. Specially, nano-sized SiO 2 particles (15 and 30 nm) led to the formation of a ZnO secondary phase in synthesized Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics, while micro-sized (2 and 10 µm) resulted in pure-phase Zn 2 SiO 4 with excellent microwave properties. Notably, when prepared with 10 µm SiO 2 and sintered at 1 340°C, the resulting Zn 2 SiO 4 exhibited outstanding microwave performances with a Q × f value of 122 570 GHz, a temperature coefficient of frequency τ f of −51.9 ppm/°C, and a dielectric constant ( ε r ) of 6.5. These findings highlight the importance of controlling particle size during synthesis to achieve desired material properties such as purity and excellent microwave performances.

By using naturally abundant diatomite with unique particle and porosity structures as the silica precursor, a novel green-emitting diatomite-derived Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn phosphor has been obtained as a dual functional sensor for developing latent fingerprints, serving as a fingerprint powder and a reagent for small particle reagents (SPRs). Parameters including calcination duration, calcination temperature, molar ratio of manganese salt to zinc and manganese salts, and molar ratio of zinc and manganese salts to diatomite have been adjusted to optimize luminescent property of this phosphor. Formation mechanism has been proposed based on the change of particle morphology and mesopore structure. With respect to material synthesis, high porosity of diatomite plays a critical part in ensuring uniform doping of Mn 2+ , lowering reaction temperature, sparing inert or reducing atmosphere. Furthermore, surplus diatomite in the precursors results in basic retention of particle morphology which is favorable for latent fingerprint development. Efficient green emission centered at 525 nm of the diatomite-derived Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn under 254 nm excitation originates from the 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 transition, making it a very capable fluorescent fingerprint powder that can suppress interferences from various surfaces, especially with the aid of 530 nm band-pass filter as an optical filter and green channel of RGB images as a digital filter. Given that the luminescence of diatomite-derived Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn phosphor is not subject to external environment factors such as water or dissolved components, a fluorescent SPR prepared by adding a certain amount of this powder (10 mg mL −1 ) to an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (0.050 wt%) shows better performance compared with some commercially available SPRs. Latent fingerprints on glass sheets can be clearly visualized even if they have been immersed in water as long as 5 days. Therefore, the successful acquisition of green luminescent diatomite-derived Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn contributes to both the synthesis of this popular green-emitting phosphor and the application of fingerprint development.

The additive manufacturing of complex Zn 2 SiO 4 –TiO 2 (ZST) microwave dielectric ceramics via vat photopolymerization (VPP) presents challenges in balancing densification with phase purity. This study systematically investigates how the initial SiO 2 precursor particle size (30 nm, 300 nm, and 5 μm) governs the entire process–property relationship. While the use of nano-sized SiO 2 particles promoted sintering activity and improved densification, it also led to the emergence of a secondary phase with high dielectric loss, which adversely affected the quality factor ( Q × f ). Conversely, larger (micron-sized) particles suppress this impurity, ensuring high phase purity at the cost of slightly lower density. By leveraging this understanding, the ZST ceramic derived from 5 μm SiO 2 (ZST3) achieved a favorable balance of properties, exhibiting a high quality factor ( Q × f ), a suitable dielectric constant ( ε r ), and excellent thermal stability with a near-zero τ f value. This study demonstrates that controlling the precursor particle size is an effective method for tailoring the microstructure and phase composition, thereby enhancing the performance of additively manufactured microwave dielectrics.

The treatment of severe burn injuries is a crucial challenge in skin tissue engineering. Severe burns are always accompanied with large-area neurovascular networks damage, leading to the lack of excitation functions and difficulty in self-healing. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop biomaterials which can not only promote wound healing but also simultaneously reconstruct cutaneous neurovascular networks. In this study, Zn 2 SiO 4 (ZS) nanoparticles-incorporated bioactive nanofibrous scaffolds are designed for innervated and vascularized skin burn wound healing. ZS nanoparticles with spindle-like morphology are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The incorporation of ZS nanoparticles endows the scaffolds with excellent angiogenic and neurogenic activities in vitro. Additionally, in vivo results show that the ZS nanoparticles-incorporated scaffolds have favorable re-epithelialization, innervation, and vascularization abilities through local release of bioactive Zn and Si ions from ZS nanoparticles, leading to rapid wound healing featuring with newly formed blood vessels and nerve fibers. Taken together, this study suggests that the spindle-like ZS nanoparticles are useful bioactive agents for stimulating vascularization and innervation of functional skin repair. The bioactive inorganic nanoparticles may be used for multifunctional tissue regeneration.
