In a reaction system, the simultaneously efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to realize the photocatalytic selective redox reactions of organics has been a hot topic. In this paper, the Zn 3 In 2 S 6 samples were synthesized via a simple solvothermal method with different solvents, which could make full use of photogenerated electrons and holes to achieve the photocatalytic selective transformation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes and hydrogen evolution under mild conditions. The results show that the Zn 3 In 2 S 6 synthesized with water (Zn 3 In 2 S 6 -W) exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance among the selected samples, with which the yields of benzaldehyde and hydrogen reach up to 732 and 708.8 μmol under light irradiation (λ ≥ 380 nm) for 4 h, respectively. The molar ratios between aldehydes and hydrogen are close to 1: 1. The apparent quantum efficiency is about 6.48% for wavelength λ = 380 ± 10 nm over Zn 3 In 2 S 6 -W sample. A possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic selective transformation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and hydrogen evolution under light irradiation is proposed. This work highlights that a reaction system is developed to effectively make use of the photogenerated electrons and holes for selective transformation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes and hydrogen evolution over Zn 3 In 2 S 6 photocatalysts under mild conditions.

Construction of visible light-response photocatalyst with enhanced photoelectric properties is considered to be an effective method for treating environmental pollutants under visible light irradiation. Herein, a novel PANI/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by the method of electrostatic adsorption. The 0.05% Polyaniline/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (PANI/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 ) demonstrates superior photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) degradation performance under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is 3.76 and 3.27 times to that of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , respectively. The improvement of photocatalytic performance is attributed to the modification the Zn 3 In 2 S 6 by PANI to maximize the carrier migration rate, light absorption intensity and cycle stability of the pure Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , so as to obtain efficient and stable photocatalytic performance. The tests of mass spectrometry analysis (MS) was conducted to detect intermediate products during MBT degradation, and a possible photodegradation pathway was proposed. Moreover, under the long-wavelength sunlight (λ ≥ 550 nm), it still shows improved photoreduction of Cr(VI) performance, the reaction rate constant is 2.18 times that of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 . Finally, by the band structure and capture experiments, a possible reaction mechanism over PANI/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 was proposed. This work provides a way to deal with heavy metal ion pollution in a long wavelength condition.

S-scheme In 2 S 3 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 microspheres were successfully prepared through hydrothermal means for enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution with simultaneous photodegradation of bisphenol A. The microspheres were assembled by embedding 2D In 2 S 3 nanosheets into 2D-3D Zn 3 In 2 S 6 hierarchical microspheres to enhance visible light absorption and separation/migration of photo-excited charge carriers. In bisphenol A aqueous solution, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate on In 2 S 3 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 shows 15.7 and 7.9-folds improvements against that of the individual In 2 S 3 and Zn 3 In 2 S 6 . Meanwhile, the degradation efficiency of bisphenol A is up to 95.8 %. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism in In 2 S 3 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 microspheres maximizes exerting the redox capability of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 for H 2 evolution and In 2 S 3 for bisphenol A degradation.

We designed and succeeded in synthesising a sequence of g-C 3 N 4 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (ZIS) composite photocatalysts by means of one-step hydrothermal synthesis, which integrated different amounts of g- C 3 N 4 into ZIS. The prepared products are characterized by means of various characterization methods to determine their structure, morphology and physicochemical properties. Their photocatalytic activities were assessed according to the performance of tetracycline (C 22 H 24 N 2 O 8 , TC) degradation experiments with light radiation. This consequence of experiments showing that the g-C 3 N 4 (0.5 wt.%)/ZIS photocatalyst is most effective for the photodegradation of TC. Moreover, results from the cyclic tests confirm the stability of the g-C 3 N 4 (0.5 wt.%)/ZIS composite, which remained active after five cycles of repeated photocatalysis experiments. We can get the conclusion that O 2 - , OH and h + all played roles during the degradation process from the figures of ESR tests and active species trapping experiments. And the corresponding degradation mechanism of g-C 3 N 4 /ZIS composites is proposed. High specific surface areas, desirable absorption capability, suppression of charge recombination should be put down to its nice photocatalytic performance. Thus, it can be considered that g-C 3 N 4 /ZIS composites have broad potential application prospects in photocatalysis degradation.

It is urgently needed to develop high-performance materials that can synchronously remove heavy metals and organic pollutants . Herein, the visible-light responsive Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /AgBr composites were prepared for concurrent removals of metronidazole (MNZ) and Cr (VI). In the Cr (VI)-MNZ coexisting system, the removals of MNZ and Cr (VI) using the optimized Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /AgBr-15 photocatalyst reached 98.2% and 94.8% within 2 h, respectively; higher than those using counterparts. The radical species trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) results demonstrated that ·OH was the most dominated species for MNZ oxidation , and photo-generated electrons were responsible for Cr (VI) reduction. Besides, slight competition for ·O 2 ˉ during the simultaneous MNZ degradation and Cr (VI) reduction occurred. Energy band structure analysis, ESR and the outstanding photocatalytic performance for MNZ and Cr (VI) removals demonstrated that the Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /AgBr-15 was a Z-scheme photocatalyst, which promoted photo-induced carrier′s separation. Possible MNZ degradation pathways and mechanism over the Z-scheme Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /AgBr were also proposed based on the identified intermediates. This study could inspire new ideas for design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts for wastewater treatment .

It is crucial to design efficient photocatalysts for elimination of combined pollutants in wastewater. Herein, the S-scheme Zn 3 In 2 S 6 -BGQDs/AgBr (ZBA) heterojunction was synthesized through co-modification of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 with B-doped graphene quantum dots (BGQDs) and AgBr nanoparticles using solvothermal method for synchronous removals of nitrofurazone (NFZ) and Cr (VI). Characterization results revealed that ZBA showed superior photocatalytic activity than the counterparts. In NFZ-Cr (VI) coexistence environment, removal efficiencies towards NFZ and Cr (VI) were 95.23% and 99.39% using the ZBA photocatalyst within 2 h of visible light irradiation. Results demonstrated that ∙OH, h + and ∙O 2 − played major role for NFZ removal, while mainly e - and ∙O 2 − contributed to Cr (VI) reduction. The S-scheme heterojunction mechanism of ZBA was confirmed by energy band structure analysis, ESR and calculated work function. Possible pathways and mechanisms of NFZ degradation were proposed according the identified intermediates. Besides, the ecotoxicity of intermediates was analyzed. This study advances the development of photocatalytic treatment of combined-polluted wastewater.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic C-C coupling is a green and efficient approach to producing valuable chemicals. The strategies for guiding effective photocatalyst design are desired but still limited. Here, we report visible-light-driven highly selective photocatalytic C-C coupling of benzyl alcohol over surfactant-modified Zn 3 In 2 S 6 semiconductors. A complete switch of product selectivity from benzyl aldehyde (91.5 %) to C-C coupling products (96.5 %) is obtained by the modification of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 with stearyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (STAB). This modification assists the formation of sulfur vacancies on Zn 3 In 2 S 6 to enhance charge carrier separation, thereby increasing the photocatalytic activity. The selectivity switch is mainly attributed to increasing conduction band position of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 by surfactant modification which strengthens the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons to induce the reversible reduction of benzyl aldehyde to ketyl radicals, and partially to the poor oxidation ability of the material that inhibits the oxidation of ketyl radicals to benzyl aldehyde. Encouragingly, this universal protocol has been successfully applied to a series of aromatic alcohols and biomass-derived furanic alcohols to selectively produce C-C coupling products.

Simultaneous using photogenerated electrons and holes in one reaction to produce H 2 and value-added organic intermediates hold great promise for the green synthesis of chemicals and clean energy. Herein, we designed an efficient, noble-metal free and dual-photocatalyst Ni/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 for simultaneous aldehydes synthesis and H 2 production under visible light irradiation. Due to the reasonable band structure of Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and the Schottky barrier established between Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and Ni, the photogenerated electrons and holes with suitable redox potentials can be spatially separated and efficiently transferred. Thereby, alcohols can be highly selective oxidized into corresponding aldehydes or carbonyl compounds at Zn 3 In 2 S 6 by the holes, and the released protons can be rapidly reduced into H 2 at Ni by the electrons. The H 2 evolution of the optimal Ni/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 can reach up to 277.2 μmol h −1 , which is about 6.5 and 5.3 times as high as that of the pristine Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and the Pt/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , respectively. Ni/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 also shows the stability and general applicability for other aromatic and non-aromatic alcohols. Compared with NiS x , NiO x and Ni 2+ cocatalysts , the metallic state of Ni is the key to achieving these photoredox reactions for effective utilization of photoexcited holes and electrons in one reaction system. During the photoredox reactions, two protons derived from O –H and Cα-H are abstracted from alcohols and then reduced into H 2 by the photogenerated electrons. At the same time, alcohols are oxidized into aldehydes or carbonyl compounds by the photogenerated holes.

Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /Bi 2 MoO 6 (ZIS/BMO) type-II heterojunction composite is designed as a cooperative photoredox catalyst for integrating H 2 production and furfural (FAL) synthesis. • The type-II band alignment in ZIS/BMO can not only promote the separation and migration of charge carriers but also obtain the effective separation of oxidation and reduction reaction sites, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activity. • This work is expected to provide new insights into achieving synergistic clean energy production and biomass-derived molecules valorization. Solar-driven H 2 production integrated with biomass valorization represents an appealing avenue to simultaneously generate clean energy and realize atom-economical chemical synthesis. Herein, we fabricate Zn 3 In 2 S 6 /Bi 2 MoO 6 (ZIS/BMO) type-II heterojunction composites as photocatalysts for a cooperative catalysis integrating H 2 production with the conversion of furfuryl alcohol (FOL) into furfural (FAL) under visible-light illumination. The type-II band alignment in the ZIS/BMO heterojunction enables not only the effective separation of oxidation and reduction reaction sites but also efficient charge separation and interfacial migration, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the FAL formation and H 2 evolution rates over ZIS/BMO are 7.2 and 6.7 times higher than those over ZIS, and 9.6 and 12.4 times higher than those of BMO, respectively. Mechanistic insight studies reveal that carbon-centered radicals (•CH(OH)C 4 H 3 O) are key intermediates in the photocatalytic conversion of FOL to FAL. This work would provide a new perspective into the design of type-II heterojunction semiconductor-based photocatalysts for synergistic clean energy production and biomass valorization. Sunlight-driven valorization of benzyl alcohol (BA) offers a sustainable route to co-produce high-value organic chemicals and green hydrogen, yet the practical deployment of this photocatalytic strategy is severely hindered by unsatisfactory conversion efficiency and product selectivity. Here we report a facile magnesium (Mg) doping strategy to modify Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (abbreviated as ZIS) photocatalysts for boosted photocatalytic BA conversion. Under optimized doping content, the Mg-modified Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (denoted hereafter as Mg-ZIS) enables efficient BA transformation within 1 hour of solar irradiation, achieving a product yield of 94.4% and benzaldehyde (BAD) selectivity of 94%, alongside concurrent hydrogen evolution. The Mg-ZIS exhibits competitive apparent quantum yields (AQY) of 71.68% at 380 ± 20 nm and 16.63% at 420 ± 20 nm for BAD generation. Further analysis indicates that Mg dopants strengthen the Zn-S/In-S covalent bonding, which improves photocarrier separation and their surface accessibility. Mechanistic study further reveals that the exceptional BAD selectivity origins from a slow BAD backward reaction as Mg doping facilitates the competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) due to the negatively-shifted band edge alignments. This work validates the efficacy of metal doping in modulating the photocatalytic properties of sulfide-based photocatalysts, and provides a viable paradigm for the rational design and fabrication of high-performance photocatalysts toward efficient organic transformation and coupled hydrogen production.

Novel S-scheme ZnWO 4 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 heterojunction photocatalysts were designed and constructed herein by a facile two-step hydrothermal method to enhance photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. The experimental results and analysis demonstrated that the heterojunction structure effectively promotes separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, suppresses charge carrier recombination and retains charge carriers with high redox capacity participating in the catalytic reaction, thereby significantly improving the photocatalytic activity. For instance, 0.2ZnWO 4 /Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (0.2ZW/ZIS) heterojunction photocatalyst achieved the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 42.66 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, which is approximately 7.28 times that of pure Zn 3 In 2 S 6 . Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy analysis confirmed that strong interfacial interactions exist between ZnWO 4 and Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , following an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism rather than the conventional Type-II heterojunction pathway. It is believed that this study provides new insights for developing efficient, stable, and noble-metal-free S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution.

Designing and constructing heterojunctions has emerged as a pivotal strategy for improving the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductors. In this study, we report the controlled synthesis of an Au/Zn3In2S6Schottky junction through a combination of hydrothermal and in situ photodeposition methods. The structural, morphological, and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalyst were meticulously characterized using a suite of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements, and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The optimized 3% Au/Zn3In2S6composite exhibited a remarkable enhancement in both photocatalytic activity and stability, achieving a 90.4% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) under UV–visible light irradiation within 100 min. The corresponding first-order reaction rate constant was approximately 1.366 h−1, nearly 4.37 times greater than that of the pristine Zn3In2S6. This substantial improvement can be attributed to several key factors, including increased BPA adsorption, enhanced light absorption, and the efficient charge separation facilitated by the Au/Zn3In2S6heterojunction. Photogenerated holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for the BPA degradation. This work highlights the potential of metal-modified semiconductors for advanced photocatalytic applications, offering insights into the design of highly efficient materials for environmental remediation.
