Electrical energy storage devices (EES) play an important role in the development of portable electronic devices, power grids, and electric vehicles. Supercapacitors (SCs) become the focus of the EES field due to their high power density and high energy density. ZnCo 2 O 4 ternary metal oxides show considerable potential as electrodes for SCs. In this work, Ni(OH) 2 and PPy materials are combined on the surface of ZnCo 2 O 4 samples. The synthesized products possess a specific capacitance of 1256 C/g at 1 A/g and an energy density of 69 Wh/kg at 1350 W/kg. Moreover, the assembled device retains 81% of its capacity after being fully charged and discharged 10,000 times.

Mesoporous ZnO/ZnCo2O4nanocomposites with excellent gas-sensing performance were synthesized using the Ostwald ripening method. The as-prepared ZnO/ZnCo2O4comprised aggregated monodisperse nanoparticles, and the nanoparticle size grew with increasing thermal treatment temperature. Increasing the calcination temperature did not significantly change the overall size of the ZnO/ZnCo2O4nanocomposites, but the pore size and specific surface area were noticeably affected. The gas-sensing results showed that ZnO/ZnCo2O4composites calcined at 500 °C exhibited the highest response to H2S at 200 °C, with a detection limit of 500 ppb. The ZnO/ZnCo2O4composites also exhibited remarkable selectivity, response/recovery speed, and stability. Their excellent gas-sensing performance might be attributed to their porous structure, large specific surface area, and the heterogeneous interface between ZnO and ZnCo2O4. This work not only represents a new example of the Ostwald ripening-based formation of inorganic hollow structures in a template-free aqueous solution but also provides a novel and efficient sensing material for the detection of H2S gas.

Porous materials can enhance the diffusion path and active site exposure of gas molecules by virtue of their rich surface area and unique microstructure, thus showing excellent practical performance in gas sensors. ZnCo 2 O 4 spinel material with porous structure is successfully prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), and its morphology, structure, and specific surface area are characterized. Experimental results demonstrate that the porous ZnCo 2 O 4 exhibits high sensitivity (5.34–100 ppm), a low detection limit (1 ppm), strong selectivity, and excellent reproducibility for ethanol detection at 150 °C. The enhanced sensing performance primarily stems from the material's porous architecture and substantial surface area advantage.

Since cobalt-containing spinel oxides have good prospects for the detection of toxic gases, they also have great potential for applications in the field of gas sensors. However, ZnCo 2 O 4 -based gas sensors have the disadvantages of low response values and poor selectivity in formaldehyde detection. In this study, we attempted to prepare formaldehyde gas sensors by varying the addition of sodium citrate for hydrothermal synthesis of ZnCo 2 O 4 . During the fabrication process, it was found that an appropriate amount of sodium citrate content could produce ZnO on the surface of ZnCo 2 O 4 , and that the gas sensitivity of ZnO-ZnCo 2 O 4 to formaldehyde was better compared to that of pure ZnCo 2 O 4 . The sensor has a response rate of 17 at 20 ppm formaldehyde at 200°C. It also has good selectivity, repeatability, and stability. These results can provide foundational knowledge for the implementation of spinel oxide materials in the field of gas sensors.

Ternary metal oxide , such as ZnCo 2 O 4 has attracted widespread attention as electrode material for supercapacitors owing to its high theoretical activity and rich redox reactions arising from the synergistic effects between two different metal species. However, the compromised electrochemical performance due to low electronic conductivity and deficient active sites of ZnCo 2 O 4 impedes its practical applications. Herein, S-doped ZnCo 2 O 4 microspindles (denoted as S-ZnCo 2 O 4 ) have been obtained by simple hydrothermal synthesis followed by calcining and sulfurization treatments. It is indicated that the doping of S results in the formation of defects and disorders without altering the crystalline structure of ZnCo 2 O 4 , which is beneficial for charge transfer, and exposing more active sites. Taking advantage of the desired structure and composition, the S-ZnCo 2 O 4 displays superior electrochemical properties when acting as an electrode material for supercapacitors. It delivers a high specific capacity of 214.1C g −1 (522 F/g) at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 , which is almost 8.5 times that of the ZnCo 2 O 4 (25 C g −1 , 61 F/g). Moreover, the S-ZnCo 2 O 4 also shows good rate capability (82% at 10 A g −1 ) and excellent electrochemical stability (78% retention after 5000 cycles). This work demonstrates that anion doping can be an efficacious strategy of boosting electrochemical performance.

To overcome the disadvantages of poor intrinsic conductivity and stability of ZnCo2O4, a ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite as an emerging pseudocapacitor electrode material with high specific capacitance, environmental friendliness, morphological diversity, and unique hierarchical structure was synthesized via a simple two-step hydrothermal method. The research results indicate that the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite can present a high specific capacity of 1628 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 and good cycling stability with 69% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) assembled with the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 cathode and activated carbon anode can deliver an energy density of 48 W h kg−1 at a power density of 695 W kg−1, and their capacity retention reached 61% after 8000 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g−1. This could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the specific surface area and electrical conductivity enhanced by compositing ZnCo2O4 with MnMoO4. As a result, the excellent electrochemical properties show that the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite has strong application potential for high-performance supercapacitors.

It was the constant pursuit of researchers to explore catalysts with higher catalytic activity, and the use of co-catalysts to modify the performance of photocatalytic materials had a significant effect on charge separation. In this paper, the non-precious metal NiS-modified ZnCo 2 O 4 composite catalytic material prepared by hydrothermal method had high-efficiency catalytic performance. When the weight ratio of NiS to ZnCo 2 O 4 was 12%, the optimal catalytic activity is 3.57 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was more than twice that of ZnCo 2 O 4 . The presence of NiS not only improved the specific surface area of the catalyst and its ability to respond to light, but the close interface formed by the combination of the two monomer phases accelerated the transfer and the utilization of the photocharge on ZnCo 2 O 4 to NiS, thereby promoting the separation of electron holes and improving the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. According to the research results, the mechanism of hydrogen production in the photocatalytic system was revealed. In this paper, NiS was used to modify the bimetallic oxide with cubic appearance, which provided a new strategy for the development of new photocatalysts.

Exploring cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is quite significant for utilizing renewable energies by converting them to green hydrogen energy. ZnCo 2 O 4 spinel oxide has drawn a wide attention in water electrolysis field owing to its earth abundance, low cost and eminent electrocatalytic activity. However, it still has a great room to boost its OER catalytic activity due to the low electrical conductivity and restricted active sites of ZnCo 2 O 4 catalyst. Herein, a facile, easy-scalable and environmental-friendly quenching method is exhibited to achieve surface Fe doped and oxygen vacancy generated ZnCo 2 O 4 by instantaneous cooling in Fe(NO 3 ) 3 solution. As a result, the quenched ZnCo 2 O 4 catalyst shows a vastly improved OER activity in alkaline electrolyte, only requiring an overpotential of 332 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than that of un-quenched ZnCo 2 O 4 (405 mV). Our results manifest that quenching treatment can endow an active Fe amorphous layer, a higher ratio of Co 3+ states and more abundance oxygen vacancies for ZnCo 2 O 4 spinel oxide, thus possessing a higher OER activity. Our work offers an effective path for the regulation of metal oxides and its application in energy catalysis field.

Porous ZnCo 2 O 4 nanostructures with hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) as adscititious alkali are fabricated via a facile hydrothermal route and heat treatment process . The morphology of the materials can be easily tuned from nanowires to nanobelts by simple varying the hydrothermal temperature. Due to the superiority of the porous nanostructure and the convenient ion transport, the obtained ZnCo 2 O 4 nanostructures are further applied as electrode materials for supercapacitors and exhibit noticeable pseudocapacitive performance with high specific capacitance of 776.2 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and good cycle stability (84.3% capacity retention at 3 A g −1 ). Moreover, a high-voltage asymmetric supercapacitor using the ZnCo 2 O 4 as the anode assembled with the freeze-dried reduced graphene oxide (F-RGO) cathode displays superior electrochemical performance with an ultrahigh energy density (84.48 Wh kg −1 at 0.4 kW kg −1 ), which reveals a great promise for practical application in electrochemical devices.

4-Nitrophenol (4-NP), a hazardous chemical compound, presents significant risks to ecological balance, public well-being, and the integrity of the food supply chain. Consequently, the development of detection techniques characterized by both efficiency and precision is of utmost importance. In the present work, ZnCo(OH)F/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was synthesized through a hydrothermal approach, followed by a high-temperature annealing process to transform them into ZnCo 2 O 4 /MWCNTs tailored for electrochemical sensing of 4-NP. The integration of MWCNTs during the fabrication process induced a pronounced synergistic interaction between ZnCo 2 O 4 and MWCNTs, leading to a substantial enhancement in the electrochemical performance of the composite. The ZnCo 2 O 4 /MWCNTs-based sensors exhibit notable benefits, including an expanded electrochemically active surface area, superior electrical conductivity, and exceptional selectivity. Under optimized experimental parameters (S/N = 3), the sensor exhibited a broad linear detection range (0.5–600 μM), coupled with a lower limit of detection of 0.026 μM. When used on real samples, the sensor showed recovery rates of 98.79 %–100.47 %, indicating its feasibility for practical use in environmental monitoring and food safety evaluation.

Engineering nanocomposites based on transition metal oxides (TMOs) shows an extensive interest due to their synergistic effects and strong interfacial interactions. In this report, a novel ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnCo 2 O 4 nanocomposite is bridged on Ni-Foam through one pot-hydrothermal way. The nanocomposite exhibits synergistic properties due to the build of a Mott-Schottky heterojunction, which enhances interfacial interactions, provides pathways for ion migration and diffusion, and enables rapid charge transfer, thereby improving energy storage dynamics. In full 3 electrode system, the ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnCo 2 O 4 electrode delivers extraordinary specific capacity of 913.7 C·g −1 (0.5 A·g −1 ), keeps marvellous capacitance retention of 79 % at 30 A·g −1 , and a long cycle life with only 7 % capacity loss after 20,000 rounds. More encouragingly, an asymmetric supercapacitor device of ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnCo 2 O 4 //active carbon (AC) delivers an impressive energy density of 73.77 Wh·kg −1 at 490 W·kg −1 power value. Two devices in series can successfully operate a white LED for several minutes. The foldability characteristic of the device shows good electrochemical properties even at various bending angles. Therefore, the new ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnCo 2 O 4 nanocomposite endorsed by Mott-Schottky junction, effectively addressed the charge states at the interface and ensured the specificity of electrode material, leading to superior electrochemical performance.

ZnCo 2 O 4 is considered a highly promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), attributed to its impressive capacity and excellent electrochemical characteristics. However, its practical application is constrained by significant volume expansion during repeated charge–discharge cycles, leading to structural instability and performance degradation over time. To address this challenge, a composite material consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coating the exterior of ZnCo 2 O 4 microspheres (denoted as ZCO@r-3) was designed and synthesized in this study, making it an anode material with high cycling stability for LIBs. This design aims to increase the structural stability and electrochemical properties through the effective incorporation of rGO, mitigating volume expansion during redox reactions when redox reactions occur. In this composite structure, rGO serves as a conductive network that significantly enhances ion diffusion, while its excellent mechanical properties help mitigate the volume expansion of ZnCo 2 O 4 during redox reactions. This dual action of rGO not only strengthens the structural stability of ZnCo 2 O 4 microspheres but also enhances their electrochemical performance, providing an effective and practical solution. As expected, the ZCO@r-3 composite exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 1582.1 mAh g −1 in the first cycle and initial reversible specific capacity of 1087.9 mAh g −1 after the second cycle at 0.1 A g −1 . Even after 500 charge/discharge cycles under the same conditions, the composites maintained a reversible capacity of 966.7 mAh g −1 . This demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, validating the effectiveness of the rGO coating in enhancing the material's long-term performance. This confirms that the method proposed in this study effectively addresses the volume expansion issue of ZnCo 2 O 4 .
