Recycling metal resources from spent battery powder to prepare electrode materials is an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy. However, direct utilization of spent battery powder is mostly ignored, and the prepared electrode materials by this approach exhibit limited electrochemical performance. Herein, we employ unpurified spent zinc-carbon battery powder (SP) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as raw materials to fabricate SP/CNTs via the ball milling method, and then use a novel electrochemical activation strategy to obtain oxygen vacancy-rich SP@CNTs (Ov-SP@CNTs) materials. Under the combined action of CNTs doping and oxygen vacancies caused by the tuning of Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ ratio via the electrochemical activation strategy, the optimum electrode (Ov-SP@CNTs-10) for supercapacitor shows the specific capacitance of 443.9 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , which is nearly six and three times higher than that of SP and SP/CNTs electrodes, respectively. Additionally, the packaged asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device with Ov-SP@CNTs-10 as the cathode and commercial active carbon (AC) as the anode manifests a large energy density of 25.51 Wh·kg −1 at the power density of 399.98 W kg −1 , and the capacity retention of 88.58% after 10,000 cycles at 4 A g −1 . This work opens up a new way for the direct utilization of SP to prepare high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Spinel-type ZnMn2O4 cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer high theoretical capacity and elemental abundance, yet their electrochemical performance is fundamentally hindered by Mn dissolution-induced structural instability and sluggish Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Herein, we propose a tunable cationic vacancy engineering strategy for ZnMn2O4 cathodes, enabling selective introduction of Zn2+ or Mn3+ vacancies via a facile chemical coprecipitation method. Comprehensive characterizations confirm that these cationic vacancies significantly enhance electronic conductivity and accelerate Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Specifically, the Zn-vacant Zn1–xMn2O4 cathode outperforms its Mn-vacant counterpart, leveraging strengthened Mn–O bonding and reduced electrostatic repulsion during Zn2+ insertion, delivers a high reversible capacity of 276.4 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1, exceptional rate capability (retain 134.4 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1), and long-term cyclability with 92% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 2 A g–1. Furthermore, a prototype pouch cell incorporating this engineered cathode achieves a superior capacity of 150 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1, demonstrating its great potential for practical high-performance AZIBs.

ZnMn 2 O 4 , with theoretical specific capacity of 1008 mAh g −1 , is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. It attracts intensive research interests not only because of its high specific capacity, but also due to its low cost, abundant resources and environmental friendliness . However, its poor reaction kinetics, low intrinsic electrical conductivity and large volume changes upon cycling impede its commercial application. In this work, we demonstrate a method to effectively synthesize a three-dimensional, layered network architecture utilizing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and cross-linked carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as substrates for ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles . The ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles are grown in-situ on the surface of both the rGO and the CNTs. The results show that the composite samples display a significantly enhanced electrochemical performance when compared with their pristine counterparts. In particular, the ZnMn 2 O 4 -rGO/CNT composite anode delivered an enhanced capacity of 606 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 1000 cycles with an 83% capacity retention. The synergistic effect between the rGO and the CNTs is believed to be the reason for the improved performance. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to successfully reveal the electrochemical conversion reaction mechanism of the new ZnMn 2 O 4 anode.

The ZnMn2O4/V2CTxcomposites with a lamellar rod-like bond structure were successfully synthesized through high-temperature calcination at 300 °C, aiming to enhance the Li storage properties of spinel-type ZnMn2O4anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, even though the electrode of the composites obtained at 300 °C had a nominal specific capacity of 100 mAh g−1, it exhibited an impressive specific discharge capacity of 163 mAh g−1after undergoing 100 cycles. This represents an approximate increase of 64% compared to that observed in the pure ZnMn2O4electrode (99.5 mAh g−1). The remarkable performance of the composite can be credited to the collaborative impact between ZnMn2O4and V2CTx, leading to a substantial improvement in its lithium ion storage capacity. Therefore, this study offers valuable insights into developing cost-effective, safe, and easily prepared anode materials.

Hierarchical porous ZnMn 2 O 4 rugby-balls on Ni foam were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method and then an annealing process . The ZnMn 2 O 4 rugby-balls were composed of interconnected nanosheets of about 25 nm. The growth mechanism is also proposed. In addition, the unique structure of hierarchical porous ZnMn 2 O 4 rugby-balls on Ni foam exhibited superior electrochemical performances including high specific capacity, long cyclic stability and good rate capability. At a constant current density of 100 mA g −1 , the initial discharge and charge capacities were 1584 mAh g −1 and 1114 mAh g −1 respectively, after 100 cycles, the reversible capacity could remain 614 mAh g −1 . These results demonstrate great potential of hierarchical porous ZnMn 2 O 4 rugby-balls on Ni foam in advanced LIBs . Furthermore, this method may provide a novel route for the synthesis of a series of hierarchical porous ternary spinel oxides rugby-balls.

Spinel ZnMn 2 O 4 with a three-dimensional channel structure is one of the important cathode materials for aqueous zinc ions batteries (AZIBs). However, like other manganese-based materials, spinel ZnMn 2 O 4 also has problems such as poor conductivity, slow reaction kinetics and structural instability under long cycles. Herein, ZnMn 2 O 4 mesoporous hollow microspheres with metal ion doping were prepared by a simple spray pyrolysis method and applied to the cathode of aqueous zinc ion battery. Cation doping not only introduces defects, changes the electronic structure of the material, improves its conductivity, structural stability, and reaction kinetics, but also weakens the dissolution of Mn 2+ . The optimized 0.1 % Fe-doped ZnMn 2 O 4 (0.1% Fe-ZnMn 2 O 4 ) has a capacity of 186.8 mAh g −1 after 250 charge-discharge cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and the discharge specific capacity reaches 121.5 mAh g −1 after 1200 long cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . The theoretical calculation results show that doping causes the change of electronic state structure, accelerates the electron transfer rate, and improves the electrochemical performance and stability of the material.

The exploration of a stable and high-rate cathode is very important for rechargeable Zn ion batteries (ZIBs). With unique merits of rich abundance, low price, and environmental friendliness, spinel ZnMn 2 O 4 (ZMO) hold great promise as a cathode material for ZIBs. However, its inherent low electronic conductivity and large volume variation in the process of charge/discharge severely restrict the rate capability and durability. Herein, the novel N-doping coupled oxygen vacancies modulated ZMO nanotube arrays (NTAs) (N-ZMO NTAs) are fabricated as high-performance cathode for rechargeable ZIBs. Taking advantages of high electrical conductivity, fast ion diffusion, high surface area, sufficient active sites, and stable hollow nanotubular architecture, the N-ZMO NTAs show an admirable capacity (223 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), decent rate capability (133.3 mA h g −1 at 4 A g −1 ) and distinguished long-term durability (92.1% after 1500 cycles). Furthermore, a flexible quasi-solid-state ZIBs is fabricated with N-ZMO NTAs cathode, which achieves favorable energy density (214.6 W h kg −1 ), superb power density (4 kW kg −1 ), and impressive long-term stability (88.6% after 1500 cycles), outperforming most state-of-the-art ZIBs. This study may shed light on designing advanced cathodes for advanced ZIBs.

Manganese oxides (MnO x ) are promising anode materials for lithium ion batteries, but they generally exhibit mediocre performances due to intrinsic low ionic conductivity, high polarization, and poor stability. Herein, yolk–shell nanorods comprising of nitrogen-doped carbon (N–C) coating on manganese monoxide (MnO) coupled with zinc manganate (ZnMn 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles are manufactured via one-step carbonization of α -MnO 2 /ZIF-8 precursors. When evaluated as anodes for lithium ion batteries, MnO@ZnMn 2 O 4 /N–C exhibits an reversible capacity of 803 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 after 100 cycles, excellent cyclability with a capacity of 595 mAh g −1 at 1000 mAg −1 after 200 cycles, as well as better rate capability compared with those non-N–C shelled manganese oxides (MnO x ). The outstanding electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique yolk–shell nanorod structure, the coating effect of N–C and nanoscale size.
