The photocatalytic degradation for environmentally hazardous substances has been widely explored with the use of various photocatalysts and techniques. It still remains a challenge to achieve efficient degradation and removal of residual antibiotics in the water environment. Here, we report an improved photocatalytic activity chip for degradation of antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride by perpendicular ZnS-coated ZnO nanorod arrays (ZnO@ZnS NAs). The enhanced photocatalytic activity contributed to the polycrystalline ZnS shell’s effective inhibition of the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Meanwhile, vertically aligned ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays can increase the light harvesting ability by enhancing scattering of light among ZnO@ZnS NAs. On the basis of these findings, an improved photocatalytic activity ZnO@ZnS NA chip has been fabricated by growth of ZnO NAs on a piece of silicon wafer and further sulfurization. More importantly, ZnO@ZnS NA chips have been utilized to construct a ladderlike device, purifying antibiotics wastewater in one step, to effectively degrade tetracycline hydrochloride with enhanced photocatalytic efficiency in flowing contaminated water. In addition, the ZnO@ZnS NA device exhibited excellent recyclability in multiple repeated cycles. The ZnO@ZnS NA chip provided a convenient and fast strategy for removal of antibiotics and pharmaceutical residues in wastewater.

Hollow ZnO core/ZnS shell structure (ZnO/ZnS HCSS) has been successfully synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. It is found that such a ZnO/ZnS HCSS exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO and ZnS toward the liquid-phase degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. What is more noteworthy, it is also demonstrated that ZnO/ZnS HCSS photocatalyst overcomes the photocorrosion in comparison to pristine ZnO by mean of cycling tests toward MO. The detailed degradation process of MO over ZnO/ZnS HCSS is investigated by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method. And then, the roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the electron spin resonance and photocurrent test, the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application.

Converting N 2 into ammonia under ambient conditions using mechanical energy-driven piezocatalysis represents a promising approach for sustainable nitrogen fixation, although its efficiency is often limited by insufficient nitrogen activation and rapid recombination of piezo-induced charge carriers. Herein, bi-piezoelectric ZnO-ZnS heterostructures were successfully constructed through a post-synthetic anion exchange strategy using electrospun ZnO as the precursor. The gradual O 2– to S 2- exchange process generated a core–shell structure composed of a ZnO core and a porous ZnS shell while preserving favorable interfacial coupling between the two piezoelectric phases. The optimized heterostructure achieved significantly enhanced ammonia production, delivering yields 2.1 and 8.9 times higher than those of ZnO and ZnS, respectively, and 2.5 times higher than a physical mixture of ZnO and ZnS with similar composition. This enhancement was also observed in dye degradation, demonstrating the general applicability of the heterostructure design. Mechanistic studies revealed that the improved performance originates from enhanced piezoelectric polarization, more efficient spatial charge separation, and abundant surface active sites that promote N 2 adsorption and activation. This work provides an effective strategy for constructing strongly coupled bi-piezoelectric heterostructures and highlights the importance of interface engineering for efficient piezocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

The reduction of CO 2 to chemical fuel driven by solar energy can not only meet the growing demand for renewable energy, but also balance the carbon cycle in nature. However, the current photocatalysts have low CO 2 conversion due to their poor light capture ability, narrow light response range, and high recombination probability of photogenerated carriers. Herein, a heterogeneous photocatalyst of hollow structured ZnO/ZnS decorated with Pt nanoparticles is synthesized through the hydrothermal process and photodeposition method, showing excellent photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction in long-time stability and ≈100% CO selectivity, which can mainly contribute to natural enhanced light-capture ability of the hollow confined space due to multiple reflection and scattering of light in the cavity, thus improving separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers due to the type II junction constructed between ZnO and ZnS and the additional reaction active sites after decorating Pt nanoparticles in the surface of the hollow structure.

Vertically aligned quasi two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanorods (NRs) on carbon fiber paper were prepared by a modified hydrothermal approach, an individual ZnO nanorod has a diameter of 100–200 nm and a length of ~1 µm. ZnO/ZnS core-hell hierarchal structures with an outer ZnS shell of ~25 nm were fabricated under an elaborate sulfidation treatment. Compared to ZnO NRs a depressed near band emission at 380 nm and a significant enhanced visible light emission around 500 nm were observed for the ZnO/ZnS core-hell NRs from photoluminescence spectra. XPS and ESR measurements were carried out to study the ions constituents and the defects of the prepared samples. The prepared samples were used as photoelectrodes in visible-light self-powered photoelectrochemical cell-type detector. And an enhanced photocurrent of 6.79 µA was obtained, which is ten times as high as that of the bare ZnO electrode. The results show that the existence of sulfur vacancies and the formation of ZnO/ZnS heterostructure were able to promote photocurrent performance, the former increases the carrier concentration and leads to an upshift of work function; the latter makes the band bend and the photogenerated e–p pairs can be separated efficiently. The results will be helpful to implement visible-light device based on heterostructure via interfacial engineering.

The effect of a ZnO#ZnS QDs heterojunction (O#SQDs) on the binding affinities of flavonoid glycosides for bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated. The fluorescence intensities of BSA decreased remarkably with increasing concentration of O#SQDs. The magnitudes of the binding constants of flavonoid glycosides for BSA in the presence of O#SQDs were in the range of 105–107 L mol−1, and the number of binding sites per BSA (n) was determined as 1.24 ± 0.17. O#SQDs increased the affinities of flavonoid glycosides for BSA by about 2.96% to 114.68% depending on their structures. O#SQDs in blood will enhance the transportation of flavonoid glycosidegs in blood and improve their pharmacology effects. From this point, O#SQDs are a perfect candidate for flavonoid glycosides delivery applications.

The utilization of solar energy to convert CO 2 into small energy molecules is a potential “carbon neutral” technology for CO 2 emission reduction. However, the industrial application is significantly constrained due to the low reduction efficiency, complexity of the synthesis methods, and limitations in scaling up the catalyst materials. In this work, we have successfully designed and synthesized a series of hollow tubular ZnO@ZnS core-sheath heterostructured materials, by combining radio-frequency thermal plasma and hydrothermal treatment technologies. The S:Zn molar ratio, reaction time, and temperature were systematically investigated, and the morphology of intermediate products was successfully captured, which provided conclusive evidence for the proposed formation mechanism. Notably, the photocatalytic CO yield of the ZS 0.5 O hollow nanotube core-sheath composite is not only 3.20 or 4.03 times higher than that of the pure ZnO or ZnS, respectively, but also possesses excellent stability. By in-depth characterization, we found that the hollow core-sheath heterostructure enhances light capture and absorption, exposes more effective active sites, and builds a type-II heterojunction between ZnO and ZnS to enhance the separation efficiency of charge carriers. The synergy of these factors significantly improves the catalytic performance, offering new insights for photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Norfloxacin (NOF) is an environmentally harmful and ubiquitous aquatic pollutant with extensive production and application. In this study, a novel composition named carbon-based composite photocatalytic material of zinc oxide and zinc sulphide (ZnO/ZnS@BC) was successfully obtained by the impregnation-roasting method to remove NOF under UV-light. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer characterised the composition. ZnO/ZnS was successfully decorated on the surface of biochar (BC). The pH, the ZnSO 4 /PS ratio, and ions and quenchers, were investigated. High removal efficiency was obtained with a pH of 7 and a ZnSO 4 /PS ratio of 1:1, and the removal ratio of NOF reached 95% within three hours; the adsorption and degradation ratios reached 46% and 49%, respectively. Fe 2+ promoted the degradation of NOF, whereas other ions inhibited it, with NO 3 − showing the strongest inhibitory effect. Three reactive species (tert-butanol, quinone, and ammonium oxala) were identified in the catalytic system. The decreasing order of the contribution of each reactive species was: O 2 − > ·OH − > h + . Additionally, a recycling experiment demonstrated the stability of the catalyst; the catalytic degradation ratio of NOF reached 78% after five successive runs. Therefore, ZnO/ZnS@BC possessed strong adsorption capacity and high ultraviolet photocatalysis ability.

Solar-driven hydrogen (H 2 ) generation utilizing photocatalysts has received extensive attention because of its potential to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental problem. The implementation of efficient H 2 production strongly relies on stable, active, and low-cost photocatalysts. In this work, we report the designed synthesis of macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composite spheres as a highly active photocatalyst for H 2 production via solar-driven water splitting. The composite spheres were synthesized by a facile solvothermal reaction paired with controllable ion-exchange processes. The resulting material exhibits superior photocatalytic activity, delivering a high H 2 production rate of ~11.37 mmol h −1 g −1 under light illumination (250–780 nm, with an ultraviolet light intensity of 34 mW cm −2 and visible light intensity of 158 mW cm −2 ). Such performance enhancement can be mainly ascribed to the synergic effects of the composite structure: (1) formation of coherent ZnO/CdS and ZnS/CdS heterojunctions at nanoscale, facilitating charge separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, (2) highly accessible inner surface of the meso/macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composites for rapid mass transfer of electrolyte, and (3) enhanced visible light scattering capability induced by their large particle size.

The practical deployment of Zinc oxide (ZnO) photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is severely impeded by rapid photogenerated carrier recombination and sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we elucidate a synergistic structural engineering strategy integrating interstitial boron (B) doping, Type-II heterojunction construction, and coherent grain boundary regulation to tailor high-performance B-ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays. Comprehensive characterizations corroborate that B-doping introduces abundant oxygen vacancies to modulate the electronic band structure, while the coherent B-ZnO/ZnS interface establishes a robust built-in electric field, thereby facilitating bulk charge separation and accelerating interfacial hole transfer. Consequently, the optimized photoanode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 1.054 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (representing a 1.67-fold enhancement over pristine ZnO) and a substantial cathodic shift in onset potential to 0.24 V. Notably, in situ ATR-IR spectroscopy captures the dynamic evolution of key *OOH intermediates, corroborating an adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) where the multidimensional engineering significantly ameliorates the energy barrier for intermediate formation. This work offers a pivotal paradigm for designing durable and high-efficiency photoelectrodes via precise defect and interface manipulation.

We demonstrate that introduction of heterostructure nanoparticles into a polymer matrix is an effective strategy to substantially enhance dielectric breakdown strength (E b ) and thus a high electrostatic energy storage density (U e ) can be obtained, which is highly desired in modern electronic and electrical systems for energy storage and conversion. This is realized through the special “electrical rectification” effect of heterostructure nanoparticles on the charge transport, which stems from capturing and confining charge carriers in the nanocomposites by potential well and potential barrier formed at the heterojunction of ZnO-ZnS nanoparticles. The leakage current of the ZnO-ZnS/polyetherimide nanocomposites (ZnO-ZnS/PEI) is suppressed by the introduced heterojunction, which is accompanied with the simultaneous increase of dielectric displacement and charge–discharge efficiency, resulting in significant enhancement of U e . Notably, the 1 wt% ZnO-ZnS/PEI nanocomposite films possess high discharged energy density at room temperature, i.e. 6.9 J cm −3 at 650 MV m −1 , and even at 150 °C, the U e still remains 3.6 J cm −3 at 500 MV m −1 . Outstanding fatigue resistance over 50,000 charge–discharge cycles at 200 MV m −1 and 150 °C demonstrates high temperature cyclic stability of the heterostructure in confining charge carriers. This work provides a novel and scalable strategy to obtain polymer-based dielectrics with superior energy storage performance.

H2O2 and O3 production through electrochemical synthesis is a promising approach to replace anthraquinone processes and corona discharge. However, the simultaneous generation of H2O2 and O3 and the use of their synergistic oxidation to degrade organic contaminants remains a challenge. Herein, heterojunction bifunctional ZnO/ZnS@C electrocatalysts were prepared by a one-step pyrolysis method. ZnO/ZnS@C-750 can achieve 90% selectivity for H2O2 and 11% Faraday efficiency for gaseous O3. The primary contributor to such a performance was exploited to accelerate the electron transfer on the heterogeneous interface and generate more reaction sites. H2O2 and O3 can also be simultaneously generated in the electrolyzer and the synergistic effect of H2O2 and O3 can be utilized to completely degrade organic pollutants, such as phenol and tetracycline. This work provided new insights into the design of the 2e− ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and EOP (electrochemical ozone production) bifunctional electrocatalysts for pollutant degradation.
