Transition metal oxides are said to have the ability to enhance the gravimetric capacity of lithium-ion batteries by two or three times that of current state-of-the-art graphite anodes. Recent reports have demonstrated that the combined utilization of structural architecture and surface modification is an attractive strategy to improve lithium storage capability. In this study, novel CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes were prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition of Cu-Zn alloy films on a removable sacrificial substrate, followed by a facile thermal oxidation treatment and Al 2 O 3 coating procedure by particle atomic layer deposition. They combine the advantages of CuO-ZnO submicroflakes, such as high lithium storage capability and fast lithium ion transportation, and Al 2 O 3 nano-coating with effective protection of the electrode interface during cycling. When utilized as anode materials for LIBs, the CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes exhibit superior specific capacity, enhanced cycling stability, and outstanding rate capability compared with pristine CuO-ZnO submicroflakes, commercial CuO and ZnO powders. The CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes electrodes deliver a high reversible capacity of 814 mAh g −1 at a current density of 50 mA g −1 , and still maintain a moderate capacity of 447 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 . Pairing with a commercial LiFePO 4 cathode, full cell shows high capacity retention and stable cycling performance, suggesting the feasibility of the CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes in practical energy storage applications. In addition, our findings also provide a clear proof-of-concept of the surface coating technique, which might be applied widely to other materials and devices where nano-coating produces desirable properties.

Simultaneous hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur contaminates (dibenzothiophene, DBT) in coal tar remains a challenge for energy utilization and environmental remediation. Herein, Ni 3 Zn/ZnO–Al 2 O 3 catalysts with different ZnO loading were prepared for deep hydrogenation of phenanthrene (PHE) and synchronous removal of DBT in a fixed-bed reactor. Compared to Ni/Al 2 O 3 , the optimal Ni 3 Zn/ZnO–Al 2 O 3 exhibited superior catalytic performance of 100.0% PHE conversion and 92.5% perhydrophenanthrene selectivity with 100.0% DBT conversion at 300 °C under 6 MPa for 10 h in a fixed-bed reactor. The kinetic study for PHE hydrogenation and mechanism for DBT hydrodesulfurization on Ni catalysts were discussed. Electron transfer from Zn to Ni over the active sites weakened DBT adsorption rather than PHE adsorption. The strong interactions between Ni 3 Zn and ZnO–Al 2 O 3 supports facilitated sulfur migration from the alloy to intimate ZnO, preventing the deactivation of Ni active centers by sulfur deposition and poisoning.

A variety of catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas have been under development for potential commercial application, which are still facing challenges, including poor carbon efficiency due to low selectivity to desired products. In this contribution, we systematically studied the effects of temperature, loading of K and Cs, space velocity, and CO2 addition on the alkali-promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts in order to achieve a high yield of desired higher alcohol products. Our particular focus was to maximize the carbon efficiency by restricting the amount of undesired byproducts, such as lower alkanes and CO2 that could be formed. Among K and Cs promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts studied, Cs-promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts exhibit better performance to higher alcohols and higher carbon efficiency than K-promoted counterparts under similar conditions studied. 1.64 mol % Cs-promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst achieves the highest selectivity to higher alcohols (24.9%) at a CO conversion of 41.6% under 290 °C, 1875 mL g–1cat h–1, 5.4 MPa. The presence of a small amount of CO2 of 2.5 mol % in the feed has negligible effect on the productivity of higher alcohols but significantly suppresses the formation of CO2 byproduct. With the further increase of CO2 in the feed, the formation of CO2 can be further suppressed but at the expense of productivity loss of higher alcohols, which is probably due to the neutralization of surface Cs sites. The best carbon efficiency can be achieved at 8% mol CO2 in the feed.

Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst has been widely studied in the hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol, but it still suffers from insufficient catalyst stability and methanol selectivity. Herein, we overcome these issues by introducing the silica promoter to the catalyst, achieving the Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 (CZAS) catalysts with significantly improved methanol selectivity and catalyst durability. Characterizations of samples showed that the silica species efficiently hindered the sintering of Cu nanoparticles during the catalysis, exhibiting constant performances in the continuous tests. In addition, the silica also electronically modulated the Cu nanoparticles that result in abundant Cu δ+ species in the catalyst, which minimized the methanol decomposition to improve the methanol selectivity, compared with the silica-free Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. As a result, the CZAS exhibited CO 2 conversion at 12.6 % and methanol selectivity at 85.1 %, giving a one-pass methanol yield at 10.7 %. The strategy in this work might provide an efficient route for enhancing the current industrial catalysts.

The ZnO–Al 2 O 3 –B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (ZABS) glass powder was designed and innovatively employed to join AlN ceramics. The crystallization, thermal expansion and wettability behavior of the ZABS glass and glass-ceramic were investigated. The results shows that Zn 3 B 2 O 6 , ZnSiO 4 and Zn 4 B 6 O 13 were precipitated after heat treatments at different temperature, respectively, resulting in a variation in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the ZABS glass ceramic. Then guided by the wetting behavior on the AlN ceramic substrate, the joining of the AlN ceramics by ZABS glass at various temperatures and holding times were conducted. Notably, Zn 3 B 2 O 6 was identified to be the primary product in the joints bonded at temperature of 700–800 °C due to the crystallization within the glass and no discernible reaction was observed between the substrate and the interlayer, while ZnSiO 4 was observed at the periphery of Zn 3 B 2 O 6 after 750 °C. Moreover, the crystalline phase Zn 3 B 2 O 6 gradually grew with the temperature and holding time increasing as the glassy phase gradually diminished, resulting in a reduction of the strength and reliability of the joints. The optimal flexural strength of the joints was 156 ± 11MPa at 700 °C for 30min. The reason for the high strength can be attributed to the interactions between the glass precipitated crystalline phase interlocking each other and the glass phase tightly bonded with the crystalline phase.

The intrinsic activity-stability trade-off remains a fundamental constraint for metal oxide catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH). Herein, we break this limitation via a well-defined dual-site catalyst comprising ZnO clusters and adjacent Ni single atoms on γ-Al2O3, constructed through a metal-doped carbon dot precursor strategy. This configuration achieves a 5-fold and 2-fold enhancement in propylene formation rate compared to the sole Ni and ZnO catalysts, respectively, while maintaining high propylene selectivity (>93%) and long-term stability over 100 h. Combined kinetic and in situ spectroscopic studies establish a cooperative mechanism wherein under-coordinated Zn2+ sites serve as the primary centers for C−H activation, while neighboring (Ni−)O sites function as dynamic regulators of interfacial hydrogen transfer. Direct evidence from temperature-programmed D2 adsorption and time-resolved propane DRIFTS reveals that the hydrogen transfer rate scales linearly with Ni loading, correlating inversely with the apparent activation energy for dehydrogenation. This (Ni−)O-mediated process dynamically reduces surface hydrogen coverage on ZnO, lowers the energy barrier for C−H cleavage, and concurrently suppresses C−C cracking pathways. This work establishes a design paradigm of using atomically dispersed metals as kinetic regulators of surface hydrogen dynamics, shifting the promoter role from static modifier to active mediator of surface pathways, offering a general strategy for advanced metal oxide catalyst design in alkane dehydrogenation.

Photo-thermo-chemical dry reforming of methane (PTC-DRM) produces syngas has been a promising strategy to utilize abundant solar energy and alleviate greenhouse effect. Herein, we report an efficient PTC-DRM process on Ni-based catalyst with Zn doping and investigate the effect of Zn on the catalytic performance of catalysts. Zn promoted the generation of active sites on the surface of Ni-Al 2 O 3 , suppressed the accumulation of coke during the reaction process and enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. Ni-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited highest thermal catalytic performance and the conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 are 50.2% and 58.1% at 650 ℃, respectively. All catalysts exhibited higher reaction rates of CH 4 and CO 2 and higher hydrogen selectivity under light conditions. Light also significantly enhanced the carbon deposition resistance and stability of the catalyst. And possible reaction mechanism of the Ni-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 was proposed during PTC-DRM process.

As communication technologies advance toward high frequency bands, demand for low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) materials with low dielectric constants ( ε r ) and high quality factors ( Q×f ) continues to surge. In this work, ZnO-Al 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (ZABS) glass-ceramics were prepared using water-quenching followed by solid-state sintering. The effect of Zn/Si ratio on crystallization activation energy, sintering behavior, phase evolution, microstructure, and dielectric properties of glass-ceramics were researched. Results indicated that the crystallization tendency of glass-ceramics reduces with the Zn/Si ratio decreases from 2 to 1.38 because of the enhances glass network stability resulting from increases SiO 2 content. However, a further decrease in the Zn/Si ratio leads to intensified crystallization tendency, which is caused by the occurrence of phase separation in the glass. All samples achieve densification in the range of 875–925 °C, with Zn 2 SiO 4 as the main crystalline phase. Dielectric properties are significantly improved by decreasing the ZnO content and increasing the SiO 2 content. The glass-ceramics with Zn/Si = 1.38 sintered at 875 °C/2 h exhibits excellent performance: ε r = 5.3, Q×f = 28200 GHz (at 15.73 GHz), a temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ( τ f ) of −33 ppm/°C, and a flexural strength of 119 MPa. These excellent dielectric properties make the developed glass-ceramics promising candidates for future LTCC applications.

Cu-ZnO is a promising sorbent for the removal of thiophene. However, the aggregation and growth of copper grains during the heating reaction leads to the sintering deactivation of the sorbent. Although various strategies have been proposed to introduce supports to mitigate these defects, the impact of supports on the desulfurization performance of sorbent remains poorly understood. In this study, Cu-ZnO/Al 2 O 3 sorbents were synthesized with excellent performance by incorporating Al 2 O 3 (derived from Al(NO 3 ) 3 , γ-Al 2 O 3 and AlOOH as aluminum sources) using co-precipitation and fractional precipitation methods. The thiophene removal evaluation was conducted in a fixed bed reactor. The results indicates that the breakthrough adsorption capacity for thiophene ( Q b-thiophene ) of sorbent synthesized using γ-Al 2 O 3 and AlOOH is approximately 25 % higher than that of those synthesized with Al(NO 3 ) 3 . In comparison to Al(NO 3 ) 3 , γ-Al 2 O 3 and AlOOH exert less influence on the precipitation and crystallization processes of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ . Sorbents synthesized with γ-Al 2 O 3 and AlOOH as aluminum sources demonstrate higher copper dispersion, larger specific surface area and smaller grain size, all of which significantly enhance the desulfurization activity of sorbent. Furthermore, the use of γ-Al 2 O 3 and AlOOH as aluminum sources contributes to an increase in ZnO and unsaturated Zn δ+ contents on sorbent surface. This improvement enhances hydrogen storage capacity and promotes hydrogen spillover at the Cu-ZnO interface; additionally, it facilitates both the adsorption activation of thiophene and the stable fixation of sulfur species. These findings provide an important theoretical basis for the design and large-scale application of efficient desulfurization sorbents.

Direct dehydrogenation of alcohols to aldehydes is a pivotal transformation in fine chemical synthesis. However, conventional thermal processes often suffer from low efficiency and high energy consumption. Herein, we propose an emerging and sustainable strategy that employs CO 2 -assisted in situ hydrogen extraction to drive the dehydrogenation of alcohols under mild conditions. Specifically, CO 2 as a soft oxidant adsorbs and activates on the Cu–ZnO–Al 2 O 3 composite oxide catalyst surface, generating reactive species (COO*) that selectively abstract hydrogen from the α -C of the alcohol. Combined Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal a higher formation rate of the aldehyde product and the lower activation barrier for the key C–H bond activation process under the CO 2 atmosphere. As a result, the CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation markedly enhances reaction efficiency, achieving a 60.21% conversion of 2-ethylhexanal under a low temperature (240°C), which is nearly twice that observed under the pure N 2 atmosphere. This CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation strategy in this work exhibits a cooperative catalytic pathway that not only enables efficient aldehyde production but also utilizes CO 2 as a chemical resource.

The promotional effects of a cesium promoter on higher alcohol (C2+OH) synthesis from syngas over Cs2O-Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts were investigated using a combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation method. In the presence of a cesium promoter, the C2+OH productivity increases from 77.1 to 157.3 g kgcat–1 h–1 at 583 K due to the enhancement of the initial C–C bond formation. A detailed analysis of chain growth probabilities (CGPs) confirms that initial C–C bond formation is the rate-determining step in the temperature range of 543–583 K. Addition of a cesium promoter significantly increases the productivities of 2-methyl-1-propanol, while the CGP values (C3* to 2-methyl-C3*) are almost unaffected. With the assistance of a cesium promoter, the CGPs of the initial C–C bond formation step (C1* to C2*) increase from 0.13 to 0.25 at 583 K. DFT calculations indicate that the initial C–C bond formation during syngas synthesis over the ZnCu(211) model surface is mainly due to the HCO + HCO coupling. In the presence of Cs2O, the stabilities of key intermediates such as HCO and H2CO are enhanced, which facilitates both HCO + HCO and HCO + H2CO coupling steps with lower activation barriers. In addition, Bader charge analysis suggests that the presence of cesium ions could facilitate nucleophilic coupling between HCO and H2CO for the initial C–C bond formation.

Background The conversion of CO 2 into value-added fuels and chemicals remains one of the major challenges in catalysis and sustainable energy research. Developing efficient catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting carbon recycling. Methods In this work, a Zr-modified CuO–ZnO–Al₂O₃ (CZZA) catalyst was synthesized via a co-precipitation method for CO 2 hydrogenation. The catalyst systems “CZZA/HZSM-5-L” and “CZZA/com-HZSM-5” represent Zr-modified CZZA physically integrated with loofah-templated and commercial HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25), respectively. A bio-HZSM-5 catalyst was also prepared using loofah sponge and rice husks as dual biotemplates to promote methanol dehydration into DME. The novelty lies in (i) the dual-biomass templating strategy (silica-rich rice husk vs. low-silica loofah) to achieve macro– meso –micro hierarchies while retaining MFI crystallinity, and (ii) Zr-promotion of the Cu–ZnO–Al₂O₃ matrix to enhance Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ and Cu–Zn interfacial sites, enabling efficient one-pass CO₂ → MeOH → DME conversion at 280 °C and 30 bar. Significant findings Zr incorporation significantly improved the structural and electronic properties of the CZZA catalyst, leading to enhanced surface area, active site dispersion, and CuO–ZnO interfacial synergy. Among all tested catalysts, the CZZA/HZSM-5-L bifunctional catalyst achieved the highest DME yield (13.2 %), DME selectivity (58.6 %), and CO₂ conversion (22.5 %) at 280 °C and 30 bar. An economic evaluation of 5- and 10-ton-per-day (TPD) DME production using refinery waste CO₂ showed payback periods of 2.98 and 2.44 years, respectively. Sensitivity analysis (±20 % variation in H 2 and DME prices) confirmed the payback remained below 4 years, demonstrating the technical and economic viability of the developed Power-to-DME process.
