A novel ZnO nanowire/macroporous SiO 2 composite was used as a support to immobilize chloroperoxidase (CPO) by in situ cross-linking method. An anionic bi-epoxy compound was synthesized and used as a long-chained anionic cross-linker, and it was adsorbed on the surface of ZnO nanowires through static interaction before reaction with CPO, creating a new approach to change the structure, property, and catalytic performance of the produced cross-linking enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) of CPO. The immobilized CPO showed high activity in the decolorization of three azo dyes. The effect of various conditions such as the loading amount of CPO, solution pH, temperature, and dye concentration was optimized on the decolorization. Under optimized conditions, the decolorization percentage of Acid Blue 113, Direct Black 38, and Acid Black 10 BX reached as high as 95.4, 92.3, and 89.1%, respectively. The immobilized CPO exhibited much better thermostability and resistance to pH inactivation than free CPO. The storage stability and reusability were greatly improved through the immobilization. It was found from the decolorization of Acid Blue 113 that 83.6% of initial activity retained after incubation at 4 °C for 60 days and that 80.9% of decolorization efficiency retained after 12 cycles of reuses.

ZnO@SiO 2 core-shell structured powder, as the raw material for preparing ZnO varistor, is conducive to obtaining a fine and uniform microstructure, which is of positive significance for acquiring high-performance resistors. Currently, limited research has been conducted on the microstructural evolution of core-shell structures during the sintering process, and the mechanism of material migration remains inadequately understood. This study systematically investigated the sintering behavior of nanostructured ZnO@SiO 2 core-shell compacts by varying both the sintering profiles and Si 4+ /Zn 2+ molar ratios. XRD, SEM, and FTEM characterization techniques were employed to track the microstructural evolution across critical sintering stages and to analyze the effect of the shell layer thickness on the microstructure evolution. To more clearly elucidate the sintering characteristics of the core-shell structure, a control group comprising directly mixed ZnO-SiO 2 powders was included. The dominant mechanisms of material transport were elucidated by EPMA through elemental mapping at critical sintering stages, coupled with microstructural evolution analysis. The core-shell structure, acting as a heterogeneous unit, demonstrated distinct sintering behavior compared to directly mixed ZnO-SiO 2 powders. This disparity arises from the modified interfacial contact between ZnO and SiO 2 in the core-shell architecture. Specifically, the phase transition temperature was reduced, the onset sintering temperature was elevated, and the densification temperature was lowered. During microstructural evolution, Si from the shell layer initially diffuses into the sintered neck regions via surface transport. Notably, the mid-stage sintering is characterized by extensive formation of a glassy liquid phase, which significantly accelerates densification through viscous flow-mediated mass transfer. During the final densification stage of sintering, grain boundary diffusion mechanisms dominate the process. Throughout the sintering process, the network structure formed by Si migration promotes microstructural homogenization while effectively suppressing grain growth.

Converting CO2 to CO via the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is an important route to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and catalysts using copper and zinc as active components have been extensively studied for this reaction. Herein, the coordination and acid etching of trimesic acid (H3BTC) were used to assemble and regulate the Cu and ZnO components in the catalyst. First, Cu-HKUST-1 was synthesized by the self-assembly of H3BTC and copper ions, which limited the sintering and agglomeration of Cu nanoparticles in the subsequent carbonization and self-reduction process. Second, ZnO particles were etched by H3BTC to form the complex of H3BTC with Zn and to redisperse Zn species. Under the dual action of H3BTC, carbon-coated bimetal nanoparticles with a size of 2–6 nm were obtained on the fumed silica after pyrolysis at high temperature. The prepared Cu@C–ZnO/SiO2 catalyst can achieve 31.4% CO2 conversion and 99% CO selectivity in RWGS reaction in a fixed bed reactor at 400 °C and 3 MPa. Besides, we also found that the molar ratio of Cu/Zn, metal components, and the introduction order of H3BTC all affected the structure and composition of the catalyst, thus affecting the catalytic activity. This study provides an excellent strategy for the design and synthesis of catalysts containing copper and zinc components.

Exploring and developing an efficient protective coating for precious stone heritages that have been exposed to sunlight and rain for a long time is crucial. The UV resistance properties of nano-ZnO are apparent. Nano-SiO2 has a stable chemical structure and is one of the main components of stone. This paper introduces the synergistic protective effect of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) on stone, which is novel in this field. The functional nanocomposite coating (FZS coating) was obtained by spraying the ultrasonic mixture of ZnO-NPs and SiO2-NPs, cross-linked with a silane coupling agent, and modified by fluorocarbon. Wettability and UV aging tests showed that the sandstone deposited by FZS coating had excellent amphiphobicity (water contact angle (WCA) > 160°, oil contact angle (OCA) < 140°). The hydrophobicity was almost changeless after 300 h of UV irradiation, indicating high UV absorption capacity and durability. Interestingly, the amphiphobicity remains unchanged after alternating treatments of temperature and humidity, expressing superior weathering stability. This facile functional coating has potential applications protecting outdoor stone heritages.

Using the Surface waterproofing to solve moisture expansion which leads to the acceleration of surface weathering of sandstone relics is a hot topic. This study focuses on surface coating protection because of the special status of cultural relics. The fluorinated ZnO/SiO 2 nano-coating was applied on the sandstone matrix in this work. The loading of the fluorinated ZnO/SiO 2 in the nano-coating, the penetration depth of the nano-coating in the sandstone matrix, and the waterproofing effect of the sandstone surface were investigated within the limitation of the color difference systematically. The freeze-thaw cycles, light exposure, water absorption, and aging tests were carried out to evaluate the environmental durability of the nano-coating in a simulated humid environment of southwestern of China. All the tests meet the criteria for the heritage protection color difference. When the loading of fluorinated ZnO/SiO 2 nano-coating is 0.4%, the water contact angle (WCA) and oil contact angle (OCA) are significantly improved, which are larger than 160° and 140°, respectively. The WCA and OCA have little changed after freeze-thaw cycle for three weeks, and the WCA only decreases only 7% after 300 h UV aging treatment. This significantly enhanced stability is due to the good penetration depth of the fluorinated ZnO/SiO 2 nano-coating on the sandstone matrix. Moreover, the excellent air permeability is achieved as well to ensure substrate breathing. This work would provide a new idea for the long-term protection of sandstone heritage in practical environment.

Sandstone buildings in humid environments are highly susceptible to fungal colonization, which poses a significant threat to the buildings’ preservation. Therefore, the development of coatings with antimicrobial properties is essential to protect these structures. This study demonstrates the antifungal activity and durability of amphiphobic and UV-absorbing F-ZnO/SiO 2 (FZS) coatings. We show that the coating efficiently inhibits the growth of Aspergillus niger , protecting the sandstone surface from one of the most common molds. A fungal inhibition rate of up to 94 % was achieved with FZS nanocomposite concentrations >0.30 % (g/L). To ensure consistent antifungal performance along with enhanced water repellency and durability under practical conditions, a concentration of 0.37 % was selected for the FZS coating. Accelerated aging tests revealed that the coated sandstone retained its antifungal activity for over 56 days under harsh environmental conditions, exhibiting an antifungal effect 800 % greater than that of uncoated sandstone. After 70 days, the coating still retained its water repellency. These results underscore the potential of the coating for long-term protection of sandstone relics, offering durability and ease of maintenance for real-world applications.

The research on low-temperature lead-free glass is of great significance for the miniaturization, integration and intelligence of current electronic products, as well as environmental protection. In this article, we report the preparation of low-temperature lead-free B 2 O 3 -BaO-ZnO-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -TeO 2 glasses by a melt-quenching technique. With the increase of TeO 2 content in glass, the glass transition temperature and melting temperature of sintered glass powder decrease, while its wettability and acid corrosion resistance show an increasing trend. The application of glass powder in the sintering experiment of terminal electrode slurry further proves this viewpoint. Compared with the poor sintering performance of the slurry with TeO 2 -free glass powder, the slurry containing TeO 2 glass powder forms a very dense sintered solid, and the sintered slurry is tightly bonded to the ceramic substrate .

The utilization of CO 2 is nowadays important for alleviating energy and environmental crisis. Herein, amino-functionalization was used to improve the performance of SiO 2 -supported Ni-ZnO nanocatalyst for the hydrogenation of sodium bicarbonate to formic acid . The activity, stability and retainability were all improved upon the introduction of amino group. A formic acid yield of 30.4% was obtained from sodium bicarbonate when passing 5 vol% H 2 /N 2 at 70 °C for 4.5 h, which is considered among the best catalytic performances reported under ambient pressure. The simultaneous improvement of the three aspects through a simple operation is attractive in the field of catalysis.

Spent nuclear fuel contains 129 I, which has deleterious effects on human health. This study focused on the immobilization of iodine waste forms via a novel preparation method with B 2 O 3 –Bi 2 O 3 –ZnO–SiO 2 glass at 500–600 °C. The XRD results manifest that the sample with 30 wt % iodine sintered at 550 °C exhibits an obvious amorphous phase. The density of the samples with different iodine contents increases with the temperature increasing, so does the amorphous fraction except for 25 wt %. The FT-IR results reveal the matrix is mainly composed of [BO 3 ], [BO 4 ], [SiO 4 ], and [BiO 6 ]. TGA analysis shows high water content in the prepared samples. SEM-EDS results present that at 550 °C one part of the iodine is chemically immobilized into the glass matrix, and meanwhile, the other physically packed by the vitrified bulk. Our findings demonstrate the potential of the new preparation method for the disposal of iodine waste forms.

Hierarchical CuO–ZnO/SiO 2 (CZS) nanofibrous membranes are designed and fabricated to remove Congo red and 4-nitrophenol two common small molecular pollutants in water. The electrospun SiO 2 fibrous membrane is serves as the substrate for hydrothermal depositing CuO–ZnO nanosheets. The CZS nanofibrous membrane shows good adsorption characteristics for Congo red due to the hierarchical morphology and the adsorption kinetics where isotherm follows the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for Congo red is 141.8 mg/g. Moreover, the membrane exhibits excellent catalytic reduction activity for 4-nitrophenol under mild conditions and over 96% of the pollutants are degraded within 90 s. The CZS nanofibrous membrane has promising prospects in applications in water treatment and environmental protection because of the good flexibility, easy fabrication, excellent adsorption, and catalytic activity. A novel sound insulation composite was successfully fabricated by modifying glass fiber fabric with tetrapod ZnO whisker (TW-ZnO)/SiO2-compounded shear thickening fluid (STF). The rheological properties of the compounded STF were evaluated using a high-speed rotational rheometer. The microstructure and sound-insulating properties of the STF-treated glass fiber fabric (STF-fabric) were characterized using a scanning electron microscope and a two-channel acoustic analyzer, respectively. The shear thickening effect of TW-ZnO/SiO2-compounded STF can be better than that of SiO2-monodispersed STF. The sound insulation performance of the STF-fabric, which was superior to that of the original fabric, was related to the fabric weaving structure and shear thickening effect of the compounded STF.

Surface micro/nanostructures and interconnected interfacial micropores are fabricated via micro-extrusion roll forming, achieving a water vapor transmission rate of 203.47 g m −2 h −1 . It balances high breathability, moisture permeability, waterproofing and antifouling performance, solving the stuffiness problem of conventional medical films. • Synergistic action of ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and micro/nanostructures delivers an antibacterial rate of 97.69% against Escherichia coli. By regulating radiative properties, it enables passive cooling with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than commercial fabrics. • With PLA/PBAT as the biodegradable matrix, the film can be completely degraded through enzymatic, composting and alkaline pathways. It eliminates white pollution and secondary contamination risks of traditional medical protective films at the material source. Medical protective films are crucial for public health, yet traditional materials often compromise wearer comfort and pose significant environmental challenges due to their non-degradable nature. Herein, a biodegradable and multifunctional composite film is fabricated via micro-extrusion roll forming, composed of a polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix featuring surface and interface micro/nanostructures. The surface micro/nanostructures and interconnected microporous interface endow the medical protective film with a water vapor transmission rate of 203.47 g m −2 h −1 , ensuring excellent breathability and wearing comfort. The synergistic effect of uniformly dispersed ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and the surface micro/nanostructures achieves an antibacterial rate of 97.69% and effectively inhibits contaminant adhesion. Furthermore, the micro/nano structures and micropores are engineered to manipulate radiative properties, resulting in a passive cooling effect with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than that of commercial fabrics. Crucially, addressing the critical issue of plastic pollution, the film exhibits excellent biodegradability through enzymatic, composting, and alkaline pathways, offering a sustainable solution that mitigates the secondary environmental pollution caused by conventional medical films. This work provides a feasible strategy for the scalable production of next-generation medical protective materials that seamlessly integrate wearable comfort, high performance, and environmental sustainability.
