Facile synthesis of magnetic high-efficiency renewable nanosorbent for recyclable adsorption of Cu2+

Sun Guohao,Hu Peixin,Lu Hechao,He Qinting,Ren Fang,Wu Juan,Jiang Wei

This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of recyclable nano-adsorbents of magnetic nanocomposites (Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO-RGO). The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were used as magnetic responders, ZnO coated on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 not only captured Cu 2+ but also prevented the oxidation of Fe 3 O 4 , and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) acted as Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO carrying platform could effectively adsorb Cu 2+ . The physical and chemical performance characterization suggested that the nano-adsorbents had stable structure, good hydrophilicity, and magnetic properties. Furthermore, the research results on adsorption performance indicated that the Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO-RGO had high adsorption properties for Cu 2+ , and the adsorption rate could reach more than 98%. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir model and second-order adsorption kinetics, and the adsorption of Cu 2+ was mainly chemisorption, accompanied by physical adsorption. In addition, because of the special magnetic response performance, Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO-RGO could be quickly separated from the solutions for cyclic adsorption so as to avoid secondary pollution. This provided a valuable idea for the effective development of clean and efficient Cu 2+ adsorbents, and the Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO-RGO had great application potential in the field of Cu 2+ wastewater treatment.

ZnO/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite with synergic enhanced gas sensing performance for the effective detection of NO2 at room temperature

Lu Junfeng,Li Donglin,Chen Xianjia,Peng Xiaolin,Li Jing,Yang Yanting,Hong Bo,Wang Xinqing,Jin Dingfeng,Jin Hongxiao

Here, we demonstrate room temperature NO 2 sensors based on ZnO/rGO nanocomposites by a facile hydrothermal method. The ZnO nanoparticles (20 ~ 50 nm) were wrapped by film-like rGO with different contents (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 wt %). They all exhibit p-type sensing toward NO 2 at room temperature. The content of rGO shows an obvious effect on the sensing properties. The ZnO NPs-1% rGO has a high response of 5.21 to 10 ppm NO 2 with a response/recovery time of 198/144 s. The sensing mechanism is discussed. The gas-sensitive properties are derived from the strong synergistic effect between the smaller particles of ZnO and rGO.

Construction of rGO wrapping Cu2O/ZnO heterostructure photocatalyst for PNP and PAM degradation

Liu Fang,Che Yangli,Chai Qingwen,Zhao Mengfei,Lv Yan,Sun Hui,Wang Yongqiang,Sun Juan,Zhao Chaocheng

Copper and zinc composite oxides (Cu 2 O/ZnO) were synthesized by an impregnation-reduction-air oxidation method. A series of Cu 2 O/ZnO/rGO ternary composites were prepared by coupling with graphene oxide (GO) with different mass fractions in a solvothermal reaction system. The microscopic morphology, crystal structure, and optical characteristics of the photocatalysts were characterized. The degradation of p-Nitrophenol (PNP) and polyacrylamide (PAM) by photocatalytic materials under simulated solar irradiation were studied, and the degradation kinetics were also investigated. The results showed that cubic Cu 2 O was modified by ZnO nanorods and distributed on rGO nanosheets. The ternary Cu 2 O/ZnO/rGO nanocomposites have stronger simulated solar absorption ability and higher photodegradation efficiency than pure ZnO and binary Cu 2 O/ZnO nanocomposites. When the amount of Cu 2 O/ZnO/rGO-10 was 0.3 g L −1 , the degradation rate of 10 mg L −1 PNP reached 98% at 90 min and 99.6% of 100 mg L −1 PAM at 30 min. The photocatalytic degradation processes of PNP and PAM all followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Free radical trapping experiments showed that superoxide radicals were the main active substances to improve photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, after four recycles, the catalytic efficiency of Cu 2 O/ZnO/rGO-10 was still over 90%. It showed that Cu 2 O/ZnO/rGO-10 was a promising catalyst for wastewater treatment because of its good photostability and reusability.

Novel electrochemical synthesis of N-doped ZnO–rGO films for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Shutong Chen,Xiaosan Song,Xichen Song,Yue Zhang

This study involved the synthesis of modified ZnO materials for photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) by a simple and environmentally friendly electrochemical procedure. The objective was to assess their capacity to photochemically breakdown ofloxacin (OFX) in an aqueous solution. To enhance the PEC performance of pure ZnO, a zinc oxide–reduced graphene oxide (ZnO–rGO) composite was synthesized through an electrochemical co-deposition process without the use of a reducing agent. Subsequently, ZnO–rGO was doped with N (ZnO–rGO:N) to further augment the PEC performance of the photoanode. The surface morphology, microstructure, and optical characteristics of the materials were systematically investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and UV–visible spectroscopy. The parameters for synthesizing ZnO–rGO were optimized based on the experimental results” if it can more simply convey your intended meaning. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that N-doping significantly enhanced the photocurrent density of the ZnO–rGO films, which reached 15.14 μA cm −2 , representing 1.6- and 1.3-fold enhancements with respect to those of pure ZnO (9.25 μA cm −2 ) and ZnO–rGO (12.0 μA cm −2 ), respectively. Additionally, the band gap in ZnO was narrowed from 3.4 to 3.18 eV owing to rGO co-deposition and N-doping. After 180 min of Xe lamp irradiation, with a bias potential of 0.7 V (referenced to Ag/AgCl), ZnO–rGO:N demonstrated an OFX degradation rate of 55.7 %. Thus, the N-doped material exhibited higher PEC performance than either ZnO (31.8 %) or ZnO–rGO (36.3 %), implying its enhanced PEC capabilities. Therefore, the modified ZnO-based photoanode prepared using the straightforward electrochemical deposition method satisfied the objective of this study, which was to enhance its PEC activity while providing a viable foundation for nitrogen doping through electrochemical methods.

Facile synthesis of TiO2-ZnO-rGO nanocomposites for highly sensitive simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol

Xin-Yang Lu,Sheng-Feng Zhang,Fen-Ying Kong,Zhong-Xia Wang,Heng-Ye Li,Hai-Lin Fang,Wei Wang

In this paper, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with TiO 2 -ZnO-reduced graphene oxide (TiO 2 -ZnO-rGO) nanocomposites was designed for the selective and simultaneous quantification of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CA). The TiO 2 -ZnO-rGO nanocomposites were prepared by a simple ultraviolet irradiation method for the first time. In the process of ultraviolet radiation, the photogenerated electrons in TiO 2 and ZnO were transfered into GO which was then reduced to form rGO. Benefiting from functional properties of different components and synergistic effect, the TiO 2 -ZnO-rGO nanocomposites exhibited excellent sensing performance for the selective and simultaneous determination of HQ and CA. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges for selective assay of HQ or CA in the existence of 40 µM of the respective isomer are 5–500 µM. The linear ranges for simultaneous assay of HQ and CA are obtained from 0.1 to 100 µM with the detection limits of 0.03 µM (HQ) and 0.05 µM (CA), respectively. The TiO 2 -ZnO-rGO/GCE also displayed excellent stability and satisfactory recovery when applied for real water samples analysis.

Synthesis of Tb-doped ZnO/RGO nanocomposites and its enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

Xiaoqian Dong,Xiaochen Yu,Xu Zhang,Zhehan Zhang,Xiao He,Ruru Wei,Youru Bai,Jibin Fan

Tb-ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (Tb-ZnO/RGO) nanocomposites were prepared by a simple one-step solvothermal method. The samples were characterized by XRD , SEM, XPS, BET, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy , and their photocatalytic activities toward different pollutants (RhB, MO, PR, and MB) degradation were evaluated. Tb-ZnO/RGO nanocomposite shows enhanced photocatalytic activity with high kinetic constants (0.04 min −1 ) and good stability. Enhanced charge separation and migration have been analyzed using UV–Vis absorption spectra , PL spectra, and EIS analysis. Improved photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the smaller band gap, larger specific surface area (28.3478 m 2 /g) and more effective separation and transport of photogenerated carriers by Tb 3+ and RGO. All the results show that the nanocomposite catalyst has a good application prospect in the degradation of pollutants.

Near-infrared light-triggered NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+@ZnO@RGO@Ag photocatalyst for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Yuangong Ma,Youlin Huang,Wensheng Zhang,Zhishan Liang,Bo Ding,Dongfang Han,Dongxue Han,Li Niu

In the domain of photocatalysis, harnessing solar energy, particularly the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, presents formidable challenges. To overcome these, a novel NIR-responsive photocatalyst, denoted as NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag, was meticulously crafted. This photocatalyst comprises a NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+@ZnO structure supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and further composited with silver nanoparticles. It was rigorously evaluated for its performance in photodegrading tetracycline (TC) antibiotics as a model compound. Leveraging the unique properties of upconversion materials, wide bandgap semiconductors, and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), the NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag catalyst exhibited an impressive photodegradation rate of 93.6% for TC under NIR light exposure. This efficiency surpassed that of NYT@ZnO (38.2%) and NYT@ZnO@RGO (72.3%). The remarkable enhancement in NIR-driven photocatalysis observed in NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag is primarily attributed to the efficient process of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from NYT to its each component. This process enhances photo-induced carrier generation and facilitates efficient transfer and energy utilization under NIR irradiation. The present study offers a promising approach for NIR-driven photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in environments with limited light exposure or even under dark conditions.

Photocatalytic degradation of aqueous rhodamine B by TiO2/ZnO/rGO nanocomposite: photocatalytic activity and catalytic mechanism

Lu Peng,Peng Nian,Jingwei Feng,Xiangxiang Han,Binhua Cui,Songsheng Lu,Jie Zhang,Chenming Li,Aiyong Zhang

The present study evaluated fabrication of bioactivated carbon (BAC) from waste activated sludge (WAS) for methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) removal from aqueous solution. BACs were prepared using KOH, H 3 PO 4 , and ZnCl 2 as chemical activation reagents, followed by thermal activation. Batch experiments with different BAC types and dosages, solution pH, initial MTBE concentrations, and contact times were conducted to investigate the BAC effectiveness. The obtained data were analyzed using the kinetics and isotherm model and also with artificial neural network (ANN). The result of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of WAS and BAC was depicted that the C–H and C–C were major surface functional groups. The ZnCl 2 activated carbon had the highest adsorption capacity for MTBE adsorption, followed by H 3 PO 4 and KOH activated carbons. The results showed that the highest MTBE removal was observed at solution pH equal to 4 and approximately 30% of MTBE could be adsorbed with 30 min contact time. It was also found that MTBE adsorption followed the R–P isotherm and pseudo-second order (type 1) kinetic models. During ANN modeling, the optimum neurons number for Levenberg–Marquardt training algorithm was determined equal to 5 with highest R 2 value and lowest mean square error were found to be 0.99 and 5.7 × 10 –4 , respectively.

Zhang Sheng-Feng,Li Jing,Wei Mei-Jie,Kong Fen-Ying,Zhang Rui,Wang Zhong-Xia,Fang Hai-Lin,Wang Wei

Herein, a fast, inexpensive, and sensitive electrochemical approach for the quantification of 6-gingerol in the ginger samples was established. Au nanoparticles-ZnO-reduced graphene oxide (AuNPs-ZnO-rGO) nanocomposites were fabricated and employed as electrode-modified materials to improve the sensitivity of the determination. UV–visible (UV–vis), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization elucidated the successful fabrication of AuNPs-ZnO-rGO nanocomposites. Voltammetry investigation demonstrated the excellent electrocatalytic activity of AuNPs-ZnO-rGO nanocomposites toward the redox reaction of 6-gingerol. Using the best experimental conditions (pH: 2.0 BR; the amount of AuNPs-ZnO-rGO suspension: 6 μL; accumulation time: 120 s), the linearity of the peak currents relied on the concentration of 6-gingerol from 0.1 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.03 μM (S/N = 3). The developed approach was successfully implemented for the quantification of 6-gingerol in ginger samples, with recoveries of 99.07‒102.1%.

Polarity-induced ZnO nanostructure to construct flexible ZnO/rGO@PET fabric with high-efficiency microwave absorption property

Ni Xiaoqi,Fu Wenwen,Wang Hui-Ya,Xu Xiangyang,Zhu Yaofeng

The growing demand for intelligent wearable devices has put forward new challenges for flexible and high-performance microwave-absorbing materials. Traditional powder-based electromagnetic wave absorbing materials are restricted by their rigidity and bulkiness, making them unsuitable for intelligent, flexible wearable devices. Herein, flexible ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabrics were successfully fabricated by choosing polyester knitted fabric as an elastic scaffold and then adhering ZnO/rGO through impregnation and hydrothermal treatment process. The morphology of ZnO presents needle, flake, and coralline-clustered structures, which are regulated by controlling the growth rate of ZnO seeds along the c-axis in a strong polar ion environment. Among them, the flake-like ZnO synthesized in a 0.050 mol/L growth solution exhibits a looser porous structure, which would significantly enhance impedance matching and multiple internal reflections. Furthermore, flake-like ZnO has a higher electric dipole moment, which can provide stronger dipole polarization and interface polarization. Notably, the ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabric with flake-like ZnO achieves the optimal minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of -70.76 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.20 GHz (8.2–12.4 GHz). Furthermore, adjusting the stacking sequence of functional fabric layers could effectively control the electromagnetic parameters and corresponding microwave absorption performance, which is well maintained after repeated washings. This work provides a novel strategy for designing next-generation tunable electromagnetic textiles.

A portable and sensitive dopamine sensor based on AuNPs functionalized ZnO-rGO nanocomposites modified screen-printed electrode

Miao Gu,Haolin Xiao,Shanshan Wei,Zhencheng Chen,Liangli Cao

Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter and one of the biomarkers of psychiatric diseases such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Therefore, it is urgent to explore an effective method to realize rapid and sensitive detection of DA. In this paper, porous zinc oxide microspheres-functional reduced graphene oxide composites (ZnO-rGO) were successfully prepared by a simple solution method, then gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were combined by electrodeposition. Zinc oxide porous microspheres-reduced graphene oxide-gold nanoparticles nanocomposites were used to modify the screen-printed electrode (ZnO-rGO-AuNPs@SPE) to fabricate a fast and efficient non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing platform for detecting DA in biological samples. The sensor obtained a good linear range of 0.5 μM to 100 μM and a low detection limit of 0.294 μM at S/N = 3. Additionally, a sensor was applied to the determination of DA in human biological samples, and it showed good stability and reproducibility, making it an excellent candidate material in the field of biosensors.

Water pollution remediation: Synthesis and characterization of poly(o-methylaniline)/ZnO/rGO composite for photocatalytic degradation of dyes

Mirza Nadeem Ahmad,Muhammad Naveed Anjum,Muhammad Fayyaz Farid,Atta-ul Haq,Akbar Ali,Muhammad Fayyazur Rehman,Mohammed A. Assiri,Muhammad Safwan Akram

Water pollution is growing at an alarming rate, particularly due to the colored wastewater released by the various industries into aquifers and fresh water sources, and in some extreme cases, they have reached the water table. Faisalabad, a city in Pakistan where there is an industrial cluster of textiles dyeing and manufacturers, water table has become undrinkable. The presence of hazardous dyes and chemicals imposes serious health issues on humans, animals, and plants. The treatment of such toxic dye effluents is crucial and could be done by efficient degradation methods such as photocatalysis. The current study presents synthesis of poly( o -methylaniline)/zinc oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (POMA/ZnO/rGO NC) using a chemical oxidative polymerization process and explores its properties as a photocatalyst by demonstrating degradation of three dyes. The composite was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence emission spectroscopy (PL), Brunauer Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), and UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–visible). Further, the photocatalytic activity of POMA/ZnO/rGO NC was evaluated and compared by degrading the direct yellow 12 (DY 12), congo red (CR), and malachite green (MG) dyes in aqueous media under UV irradiation. The results indicated that after 110 min, POMA/ZnO/rGO composite degraded the dyes by 92% (DY 12), 86.1% (CR), and 82.1% (MG), respectively. Moreover, kinetic studies of the photocatalyst were also performed along with reusability test, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and degradation mechanism.
