Crafting cellulose hollow microspheres with cellulose nanosheets

Wenxuan Lei,Heng Huang,Ruobing Liang,Guoping Li,Pan Chen,Jiechun Xiang,Ang Lu

Nano-/micro-cellulose has attracted significant attention in advanced materials due to its cellulosic properties as well as the important hallmarks of nano-/micro-materials. However, current approaches for the preparation of them are predominantly limited to “top-down” strategies which yield mostly whisker-/fiber-like morphologies. Therefore, it is imperative to develop cellulose-based nano-/micro-materials with diversified architectures. Here, we report the preparation of cellulose nanosheets composed of cellulose nanofibrous network, using cellulose solution as the precursor, via a “bottom-up” strategy. Due to its excellent water dispersibility and stability, these cellulose nanosheets can be assembled to form cellulose hollow microspheres through an ice-melting-induced lyophilization technique. The property and application of the cellulose microspheres can be further expanded by preparing composite microspheres via co-assembling cellulose nanosheets with functional nanomaterials. This work not only provides a simple, mild, and green approach through a new type of “bottom-up” strategy which may shed light on the design and preparation of nano-/micro-materials, but also offers novel cellulose-based nano-/micro-materials which may find wide applications in various fields due to the distinct architectures.

Robust, stable cooling cellulose composite: Coupling nano-SiO2 and cellulose acetate in natural cellulose

Yinghao Bi,Xiyao Luo,Yuxin Yin,Fengjie Tang,Haodong Sun,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen,Jianguo Li

Passive radiative cooling material of cellulose by coupling inorganic nanoparticles , have demonstrated competitive advantages in sustainably cooling buildings and constructions due to their voluminous availability, biodegradability, renewability, and natural origin. However, the weak stability of cellulose-inorganic nanoparticle materials when exposed to water or external forces remains a significant challenge that impedes their practical application. In this study, we proposed an easy-to-prepare, scalable, and robust cooling cellulose composite by coupling nano-SiO 2 and cellulose acetate (CA) within cellulose fibers , using the mature pulping and paper process (filling of inorganic particles of nano-SiO 2 and subsequent sizing of polymer of CA). More importantly, the CA molecules form the strong bonding with the cellulose molecules due to the high similarity of their molecular structure, which makes CA function as a “glue” to effectively fasten nano-SiO 2 on the cellulose fibers. Correspondingly, our cellulose composite features desirable robustness and structural stability even undergoing mechanical beating and water-soaking treatments, demonstrating its excellent robustness and desirable adaptability to natural environments, such as wind and rain. As a result, despite undergoing water-soaking (for 40 days) or environmental exposure (for 90 days), the cooling cellulose composite still exhibits excellent solar reflectance (>95 %) and infrared thermal emissivity (>0.95 at 8–13 μm), enabling sub-ambient temperature (∼6.5 °C during daytime and ∼8 °C at nighttime) throughout the day. Our cooling cellulose composite demonstrates promising potential as an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable cooling material in our low-carbon society.

Bacterial Cellulose Aerogels Skeleton Strengthened by Regenerated Cellulose

Rui Fu,Hua Zheng Sai,Li Xing,Jun Hui Xiang,Zhen You Li,Ting Zhang,Fu Shi Zhang

Soft skeleton of bacterial cellulose aerogels (BCAs) was strengthened effectively by conformal coverage of regenerated cellulose to make sure the BCAs sustain more compression. After freeze drying, compression modulus of the strengthened sample is significantly higher than that of the BCAs, which endows the former more extensive applications. The regenerated cellulose solution was prepared by gelation of cellulose from aqueous alkali hydroxide/urea solution. Then the bacterial cellulose wet gels bulks were immersed in the regenerated cellulose solution with different contents to discuss the enhanced effect of the BCAs skeleton. The morphology of the enhanced BCAs was observed by scanning electron micrograph (SEM).The porous structure of the enhanced BCAs was investigated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) instrument. The stress−strain curves of the enhanced BCAs were measured. The XRD pattern of the strengthened sample was also carried out. The results indicated that regenerated cellulose forms thin layers which conformally covered bacterial cellulose skeleton fibers and that had little effect on microstructure and crystal form of the bulk cellulose aerogels.

Extraction of 2D Cellulose Nanosheets From Natural Cellulose

Jinhang Yang,Chengqi Feng,Chenkai Jin,Yan Lei,Haining Na,Jin Zhu

Cellulose is a non-food biomass with a hierarchical chemical structure, yet suitable and general methods for the selective acquisition of its 2D structure are still lacking. In this study, 2D cellulose nanosheets (CNSs) are directly extracted from cellulose using zwitterion combined with phosphotungstic acid (HPW) as the catalyst. The size of the CNSs is in the range of 1–20 µm with a thickness of 15–28 nm. Each CNS is composed of a number of cellulose nanocrystals with lengths of 150–400 nm and diameters of 5–28 nm. The discovery of CNSs confirms the inherent 2D structures aggregated at the sub-micro level. This provides an updated view of the hierarchical structure of natural cellulose, which is composed of nanosheets, nanocrystals, and elementary fibrils. This method enables the selective extraction of CNSs under mild conditions, featuring high selectivity and broad generality. As a new type of 2D nanomaterials, the average modulus, roughness, and adhesion force of single layer CNSs are 7.2 GPa, 0.5 nm, and 7.49 nN. CNSs may open new avenues for applications in barrier materials, energy storage, catalyst carriers, composites, and selective adsorption.

All cellulose composites prepared by hydroxyethyl cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals through the crosslink of polyisocyanate

Zhaoqing Lu,Jizhen Huang,Songfeng E,Jiaoyang Li,Lianmeng Si,Cheng Yao,Fengfeng Jia,Meiyun Zhang

In this work, all cellulose composite (ACC) films were prepared through a blocked polyisocyanate (BPIC) induced cross-linking of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The chemical characterization indicates that the covalent bonds have been formed between HEC and CNC. Mechanical test shows that the addition of 4 % CNC into the HEC matrix improves the tensile strength by 120.2 % compared to the neat HEC film. The further incorporation of 10 % BPIC into the above ACC film can enhance the tensile strength by 280.2 %. The water contact angles of the ACC film that constituted by 4 % CNC and 10 % BPIC is increased to 100.1° while the thermal decomposition temperature is up to 210 °C. The morphological analysis suggests that the CNC is beneficial to the dispersion of the cross-linked HEC, which increases the elongation at break and maintains the excellent tensile strength meanwhile.

Sustainable conversion regenerated cellulose into cellulose oleate by sonochemistry

Hou De-Fa,Yuan Pan-Pan,Feng Zi-Wei,An Meng,Li Pei-Yao,Liu Can,Yang Ming-Bo

Derivatization has great potential for the high-value utilization of cellulose by enhancing its processability and functionality. However, due to the low reactivity of natural cellulose, it remains challenging to rapidly prepare cellulose derivatives with high degrees of substitution. The “cavitation effect” of ultrasound can reduce the particle size and crystalline index of cellulose, which provides a possible method for preparing cellulose derivatives. Herein, a feasible method was proposed for efficiently converting regenerated cellulose to cellulose oleate with the assistance of ultrasonic treatment. By adjusting the reaction conditions including ultrasonic intensity, feeding ratios of oleic acid, reaction time, and reaction solvent, a series of cellulose oleates with degrees of substitution ranging from 0.37 to 1.71 were synthesized. Additionally, the effects of different reaction conditions on the chemical structures, crystalline structures, and thermal behaviors were investigated thoroughly. Cellulose oleates with degrees of substitution exceeding 1.23 exhibited amorphous structures and thermoplasticity with glass transition temperatures at 159.8 to 172.6 °C. This study presented a sustainable and practicable method for effectively derivatizing cellulose.

Synthesis of thermoplastic cellulose grafted polyurethane from regenerated cellulose

Hou De-Fa,Tan Huang,Li Meng-Lei,Tang Yue,Liu Zheng-Ying,Yang Wei,Yang Ming-Bo

Due to the fact that natural cellulose cannot be melted, it is still challenging to process this biopolymer via thermoplastic processing methods. Herein, polycaprolactone diol was grafted onto regenerated cellulose (RC) via hydroxyl/isocyanate chemistry in dimethyl sulfoxide to endow cellulose with thermoplasticity. By adjusting the reaction parameters including the feeding ratios of reactants and reaction time, several homogeneous cellulose grafted polyurethanes (RC-g-PU) with the degree of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.49 to 1.48 and degree of polymerization ranging from 1.84 to 3.3 were synthesized. The thermoplasticity of the obtained RC-g-PU was well characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscope. The results revealed that the prepared RC-g-PU with DS values ranging from 1.01 to 1.48 can be melted at above 168.4 °C because PU side chains can serve as internal plasticizers and prevent the restacking of cellulose chains. Eventually, the synthesized thermoplastic RC-g-PU can be processed into transparent films by hot-pressing at 170 °C. Therefore, this research constructs a melt-processable cellulose derivative by a simple and engineering method.

Cellulosic nanocomposite membranes from hydroxypropyl cellulose reinforced by cellulose nanocrystals

Ma Lin,Wang Lili,Wu Lixin,Zhuo Dongxian,Weng Zixiang,Ren Rongrong

Cellulosic nanocomposite membranes were prepared by incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) matrix using a mixing/evaporation technique. CNCs were obtained from filter paper using the sulfuric acid hydrolysis method with the aid of ultrasonication. The relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of the CNCs/HPC nanocomposite membranes was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the CNCs were well dispersed in the HPC matrix, and the fracture surface demonstrated a fibrous characteristic. With increasing CNCs content, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the CNCs/HPC nanocomposite membranes gradually increased. At 5 wt% content of CNCs, the strength was increased by 525 % and the Young’s modulus by 124 % compared with pure HPC membrane. Moreover, the effect of the phase change of HPC on the mechanical properties of the CNCs 5wt% /HPC nanocomposite membranes and the corresponding mechanism were also studied.

Cellulose Membranes from Cellulose CO2-Based Reversible Ionic Liquid Solutions

Yuanlong Guo,Long Cai,Gu Guo,Haibo Xie,Lihua Zhang,Longming Jin,Songmiao Liang,Lijie Hu,Qinqin Xu,Qiang Zheng

Regenerated cellulose membranes (RCMs) were prepared from cellulose sufficiently dissolved in [TMGH]2+[OOCOCH2CH2OCOO]2–/DMSO (XILS = 0.2, XILs is the mole fraction of reversible ionic liquids in the mixed solvents) mixed solution under mild conditions (50 °C, 3 h, PCO2 = 0.2 MPa) using different coagulation baths of ethanol, methanol, NaOH, and H2SO4 aqueous solutions. The structure and properties of these membranes were characterized using various characteristic technologies. The membrane regenerated from ethanol exhibited good thermostability and mechanical, water vapor, and oxygen barrier properties with a tensile strength of 56.2 MPa, a tensile strain of 20.4%, an excellent water vapor permeability of 8.7 × 10–3 g μm/m2 day kPa, and an oxygen permeability (OP) of 4.087 cm3 μm/m2 day atm. The membranes regenerated from aqueous solutions of alkali and acid have an OP that tends to zero. This study provides a novel dissolving strategy to prepare cellulose membranes that have potential applications in the packaging, food, and agricultural industries.

Mechanical reinforcement of a cellulose aerogel with nanocrystalline cellulose as reinforcer

Tingting Zheng,Ang Li,Zhanying Li,Wenbin Hu,Lin Shao,Lingbin Lu,Yang Cao,Yongjun Chen

As an environmentally friendly aerogel with outstanding performances, the improvement of mechanical properties is urgently required for cellulose aerogel development. In this study, a cellulose aerogel with good mechanical properties was successfully fabricated using nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) as reinforcer. Characterization results demonstrated that NCC was embedded well into the cellulose aerogel. Tests and evaluation showed that the compressive modulus of the NCC reinforced cellulose aerogel was significantly improved, about 6 times higher than that of the pure cellulose aerogel. Furthermore, after modification with trimethylchlorosilane via a cold plasma treatment, the NCC reinforced aerogel became hydrophobic but its oleophilic property remained. This aerogel showed good adsorption capacity, reached saturation rapidly and possessed good reusability. Reinforced mechanical properties with NCC make this cellulose aerogel a very promising material for highly efficient separation and extraction of organic pollutants and oils from water.

Research in porous structure of cellulose aerogel made from cellulose nanofibrils

Chen Gong,Jian-ping Ni,Chao Tian,Zhen-hua Su

In this study, a simple strategy to fabricate the cellulose aerogel with homogeneous porous structure and good compression strength properties has been demonstrated. The cellulose aerogel was simply prepared by adding styrene acrylic emulsion (SAE) to the TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), followed by freeze-drying and oven-heating, in which covalent bond between CNF and SAE was confirmed by FT-IR. Meanwhile, the regulation process of porous structure of cellulose aerogels was investigated by varying the properties of CNF, and the addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and SAE. The results demonstrated that the porous structure of cellulose aerogel was gradually improved with increasing carboxyl content of CNF. CMC could effectively increase in specific surface area of cellulose aerogel, achieving a more preferred porous structure due to the elimination of hornification. SAE could highly enhance the uniformity of structure with specific surface area up to 184 m 2 /g, porosity up to 99%, and successfully improve the strength properties, showing the fabricated cellulose aerogel as a potential cushion packaging material.
