A rapid, efficient, and environmentally friendly matrix solid-phase dispersion microextraction was established to determine and quantify terpenoids in Radix Curcumae using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector. Various parameters affecting the extraction were investigated in detail, such as the grinding time, amount of adsorbent, type and concentration of elution solvent, and pH. The optimization of single-factor and response surface methodology was performed to confirm the best conditions in this procedure. The final optimized conditions were obtained by applying 70 mg of cucurbituril as adsorbent, 149 s as the optimum grinding time, and 228 mM of 3-(N,N-dimethylpalmitylammonio)propanesulfonate aqueous solution (pH 6.5) as the optimal elution solvent. The validated method showed a satisfactory linear range of 0.10–10 µg/mL for curdione and furanodiene, 0.01–10 µg/mL for isocurcumenol and germacrone, and 0.05–10 µg/mL for furanodienone, while the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.9945 to 0.9970. The recoveries of the investigated analytes at two spiked concentration levels (0.1 and 1.0 µg/mL) ranged from 96.53 to 104.60%. In addition, this method displayed acceptable reproducibility (relative standard deviation ≤ 3.66%). The results showed that the newly proposed matrix solid-phase dispersion microextraction method was successfully applied to analyze curdione, isocurcumenol, furanodienone, germacrone and furanodiene in Radix Curcumae samples.

A novel dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) method is established for the determination of seven acaricides (clofentezine, benzomate, fenpyroximate, diafenthiuron, pyridaben, doramectin, and ivermectin) in fruit juice and functional food by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography. In this method, these analytes were extracted from apple juice and curcuma wenyujin using cucurbituril used as the adsorbent, water as the extraction solvent, and methanol as the elution solvent. The primary parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized by experiments for concentration of adsorbent, oscillation time, desorption solvent, and pH value and by response surface methodology. Under the optimal conditions, all target analytes had a good linear relationship, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9900 to 0.9940, the limits of detection were 0.42–5.16 ng/mL, the limits of quantification were 1.39–17.18 ng/mL, and the spiked recoveries of seven target compounds in real samples ranged from 70.04 to 94.95%. The intra-day precision RSD variations ranged from 0.13 to 0.70%, and the inter-day precision RSDs were between 0.38 and 1.4%, which had good reproducibility and repeatability. In general, DMSPE is a convenient, efficient, and environmentally friendly method for sample preparation, which has the potential for microextraction.

Designing composite structures with simultaneous fire and smoke suppression remains challenging due to the stage-dependent pyrolysis behaviors of polymer composites during combustion. Herein, a ferrocene@cucurbituril[n] (Fc@(CB) n ) host–guest system was fabricated via a simple, green, and spontaneous self-assembly strategy and incorporated into epoxy resin as an efficient additive. With only 2 wt% Fc@(CB) n , the limiting oxygen index of the epoxy increased significantly from 23.0% to 27.5%, while the peak heat release rate, total heat release, total smoke release, and CO/CO 2 ratio were reduced by 16%, 29%, 26%, and 26%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed a hierarchical combustion-catalysis behavior across different fire stages. In the gas phase at lower temperatures, iron- and aromatic-derived radicals efficiently scavenged high-energy H· and OH· radicals, suppressing flame propagation. At elevated temperatures, cucurbituril cavities adsorbed small-molecule pyrolysis gases, while ferrocene generated active iron radicals that catalyzed smoke suppression. Notably, in the condensed phase, a continuous and thermally stable char layer composed of (CB) n and Fc@(CB) n was formed for the first time, acting synergistically as a carbonization catalyst and phase-transfer medium to effectively block heat, oxygen, and mass transfer. This work elucidates a multilevel flame-retardant and smoke-suppressive mechanism enabled by host–guest chemistry and provides a novel strategy for developing high-performance fire-safe epoxy composites for architectural, transportation, and electronic applications.

In this study, a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) strategy using cucurbit[ n ]uril (CB[ n ]) as a host molecule is proposed for the analysis of low molecular weight (LMW) compounds in complex samples. As a proof-of-concept, CB[6] was selected as the host molecule, and endogenous polyamines in plant tissue were chosen as the target analytes. Due to the molecular recognition and mass shifting properties of CB[6], the ionic signals associated with polyamines were moved to the higher mass region (>1000 Da) after specifically binding to CB[6], while signal interference derived from the conventional organic matrix and the complex sample matrix remained in the low mass region because of the incompatibility of their molecular size with CB[6] cavities. The strategy not only facilitated the analysis of LMW compounds in complex samples by MALDI MS, but also offered high throughput by accomplishing the entire analytical procedure within 10 min. The detection of polyamine concentration showed good linearity in the range of 0.02–10.0 ng/μL with correlation coefficients (R) greater than 0.9915. The limits of detection were 8.8–28.8 pg. The good reproducibility and reliability of the method were demonstrated by excellent intraday and interday precisions with relative standard deviations less than 7.9%, and the recovery ranged from 92.1% to 117.1%. Finally, the good sensitivity of the method allowed for the quantitative analysis of endogenous polyamine concentrations in various micro-tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana (20.0–740.0 μg fresh weight for each sample).

Although several methods have realized the analysis of low molecular weight (LMW) compounds using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) by overcoming the problem of interference with MS signals in the low mass region derived from conventional organic matrices, this emerging field still requires strategies to address the issue of analyzing complex samples containing LMW components in addition to the LMW compounds of interest, and solve the problem of lack of universality. The present study proposes an integrated strategy that combines chemical labeling with the supramolecular chemistry of cucurbit [ n ]uril (CB [ n ]) for the MALDI MS analysis of LMW compounds in complex samples. In this strategy, the target LMW compounds are first labeled by introducing a series of bifunctional reagents that selectively react with the target analytes and also form stable inclusion complexes with CB [ n ]. Then, the labeled products act as guest molecules that readily and selectively form stable inclusion complexes with CB [ n ]. This strategy relocates the MS signals of the LMW compounds of interest from the low mass region suffering high interference to the high mass region where interference with low mass components is absent. Experimental results demonstrate that a wide range of LMW compounds, including carboxylic acids , aldehydes, amines, thiol, and cis -diols, can be successfully detected using the proposed strategy, and the limits of detection were in the range of 0.01–1.76 nmol/mL. In addition, the high selectivity of the labeling reagents for the target analytes in conjunction with the high selectivity of the binding between the labeled products and CB [ n ] ensures an absence of signal interference with the non-targeted LMW components of complex samples. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed strategy for complex sample analysis is demonstrated by the accurate and rapid quantitative analysis of aldehydes in saliva and herbal medicines. As such, this work not only provides an alternative method for the detection of various LMW compounds using MALDI MS, but also can be applied to the selective and high-throughput analysis of LMW analytes in complex samples.
