Effective and selective extraction of Au(III) and Pd(II) from practical e-waste by tridentate thioether extractants

Xuan Huang,Ming Yi,Kewen Tang

To address resources shortage and environmental degradation, noble metal recovery from e-waste is in desperate need. Herein, to achieve selective extraction of gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) from practical e-waste, a series of tridentate thioether extractants are designed with ester functional groups at both ends of the thioether. By varying the chain length of the ester alkyl, the relationship between extractant structure and performance is further explored. The results indicate that the as-introduced tridentate structure facilitate the Au(III) and Pd(II) extraction, demonstrating a complex mechanism involving both coordination substitution and ion association. Notably, the extractant with the shortest carbon chain length and smallest molecular weight delivers outstanding extraction capacities of 920.2 mg/g for Au(III) and 280.7 mg/g for Pd(II). More importantly, it exhibits superior selectivity (∼100 %) for Au(III) and Pd(II) in complex metal solutions. This work guides the design of thioether-based extractants for sustainable recovery of noble metal from practical e-waste.

Surfactant assisted Cr-metal organic framework for the detection of bisphenol A in dust from E-waste recycling area

Zhi Li,Jiayue Hu,Yongguang Xiao,Qingbing Zha,Lixi Zeng,Mingshan Zhu

Due to their highly porous structures, metal organic framework materials are widely used in analytic areas. In this paper, Cr-metal organic framework (MIL-101(Cr)) modified electrode was prepared and then was used as electrochemical sensor for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA). By using one kind of surfactant of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the analytic performances of MIL-101 (Cr) towards BPA detection were greatly improved. Compared with pure MIL-101 (Cr), the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) behavior of CTAB/MIL-101 (Cr) was improved 3.0 times in the presence of BPA. The hydrophobic long chain alkanes of CTAB can improve the enrichment and electrochemical oxidation for BPA. The CTAB/MIL-101 (Cr) sensor exhibited a linear range from 20 to 350 nM and a low detection limit of 9.95 nM (LOD = 3 s b / S ) and showed good reproducibility, stability and selectivity . Finally, real samples of dusts from E-waste recycling area in South China were collected and the CTAB/MIL-101 (Cr) sensor demonstrated satisfactory results for BPA detection from these dust samples.

New insight on occurrence of liquid crystal monomers: A class of emerging e-waste pollutants in municipal landfill leachate

Qianqian Jin,Danyang Tao,Yichun Lu,Jiaji Sun,Chun Ho Lam,Guanyong Su,Yuhe He

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) have been proposed as a class of emerging organic pollutants , which were recently detected in indoor dust and sediment samples collected near electronic devices recycling facilities. However, there is a knowledge gap for analytical method, occurrence, and distribution of LCMs in aqueous sample. Herein, a robust method was developed to determine 38 target LCMs in landfill leachate . A combined ultrasonic enhanced liquid-liquid extraction, saponification and silica/florisil packed column purification method achieved recoveries of 76.9~127.1%, 84.5~114.6% and 81.3~104.6% at spiking levels of 2 ng, 10 ng and 50 ng in leachate, respectively. The developed method was validated through determination of target LCMs in leachate samples collected from municipal landfills in Hong Kong (HK) and Shenzhen (SZ), China. There were 23 and 20 LCMs detected in the HK (ΣLCMs=1120 ng/L) and SZ (ΣLCMs=409 ng/L) sample, respectively, with 6 LCMs newly detected in the environment. This study provided the first evidence suggesting that landfill leachate might be a potential sink of LCMs emitted from e-waste. Future study is urged to investigate the potential migration of LCMs from landfill leachate as a point source, and their occurrence, distribution, fate, and ecotoxicological risk in aquatic environments on regional and global scales.

Rapid and selective E-waste gold extraction from aqua regia by dual redox active-sites of skeleton modulated poly(organo)phosphazenes

Yasir Abbas,Sajjad Ali,Majid Basharat,H.M. Adeel Sharif,Muhammad Ahsan Iqbal,Mohamed Bououdina,Haoliang Wang,Niaz Ali Khan

The sustainable recovery of gold from electronic waste (E-waste) remains a significant challenge due to lack of multiple redox active-sites in the existing adsorbents, their high cost, and poor stability in extreme acidic conditions. Herein, we rationally designed the skeleton engineering of poly(organo)phosphazene via substitution reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) with p-phenylenediamine (DA), 1,4-benzenedithiol (DT), and 4-aminothiophenol (AT), producing poly(p-phenylenediamine-co-cylotriphosphazene) (PDA) with N-redox active-sites, poly(1,4-benzenedithiol-co-cylotriphosphazene) (PDT) containing S-redox active-sites, and poly(4-aminothiophenol-co-cylotriphosphazene) (PAT) holding dual N-S-redox active-sites. The PDA, PDT, and PAT in the N-bromosuccinimide/pyridine (NBS/Py) leaching solution demonstrated extraction efficiency of 83.7 % Au 3+ , 45.5 % Cu 2+, 44 % Ni 2+ , and 83.6 % Au 3+ , 47.4 % Cu 2+ , 48 % Ni 2+ , and 83.1 % Au 3+ , 48.5 % Cu 2+ , 48.8 % Ni 2+ . While, in the aqua regia, these adsorbents showed extraction efficiency of 70.0 % Au 3+ , 14.0 % Cu 2+ , 13.8 % Ni 2+ , and 92.3 % Au 3+ , 6.4 % Cu 2+ , 9.8 % Ni 2+ , and 95.6 % Au 3+ , 13.0 % Cu 2+ , 10.3 % Ni 2+ . In particular, the PAT with the dual N-S-redox active sites achieved maximal Au 3+ extraction efficiency (99.2 %), which is 1.05 and 1.04 times higher than PDA and PDT within 15 min, superb uptakes of 2000 mg/g, excellent selectivity (99.9 %) in a mixture of eight metal ions (Al, Co, Cu, K, Mg, Na, Ni, Mn), 100 % removal capacity and high stability even in pure aqua regia leaching solution. Gold ions adsorbed on these adsorbents, spontaneously reduced, experienced nucleation, and grew into single crystalline nanoplates along (111) planes as well as nanolayers composed of Au-single-atoms and Au-nanoclusters. The density function theory (DFT) calculations and variation in binding energies of N and S indicated that due to the synergy of dual N-S-redox active-sites, the PAT showed enhanced performances and excellent selectivity. For commercial applications, the as-synthesized PDA, PDT, and PAT were highly stable in pure aqua regia leaching solution, showing precisely selective and rapid gold extraction (70 %, 92 %, 96 %, respectively) than N- NBS/Py leaching systems (83 %) with traces of other competing metals. This study proves that skeleton-modulated poly(organo)phosphazene greatly facilitates gold extraction for industrial-scale applications.

A convenient chemiluminescence detection for bisphenol A in E-waste dismantling site based on surface charge change of cationic gold nanoparticles

Yingying Qi,Jiahuan He,Fu-Rong Xiu,Xuan Yu,Xiang Gao,Yifan Li,Yongwei Lu,Zhiqi Song

The crude disassembling for electronic waste (E-waste) has resulted in serious pollution of the environment in dismantling site. Convenient detection of single contaminant in dismantling site is very important to evaluating environmental pollution caused by single component during dismantling process and environment supervision. Herein, a novel chemiluminescence (CL) assay was constructed to detect ubiquitous pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) in dismantling site of E-waste based on surface charge change of cationic gold nanoparticles arising from the interaction of BPA and aptamer. The detection limit for BPA is 6.2 × 10 −2  ng/mL, which is far lower than the requirements of Chinese Health Standards (0.05 mg/kg). The sensitivity can be attributed to the strong affinity between anti-BPA aptamer and BPA, and the direct and sensitive signal response of nanoparticles' microstructure for CL reaction. The high specificity of affinity between anti-BPA aptamer and BPA led to high selectivity of BPA detection, thus resisting the complexity of real environment. So, this analysis was successfully applied for the detection of BPA in the surface soil of E-waste dismantling site.

E-waste derived CuAu bimetallic catalysts supported on carbon cloth enabling effective degradation of bisphenol A via an electro-Fenton process

Mengxiang Ye,Chao Zhang,Zhenzhen Liu,Huaimeng Li,Zhen Fu,Haimin Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Yunxia Zhang

Extensive utilization and excessive accumulation of bisphenol A (BPA) has posed a serious threat to the whole ecosystem, necessitating the rational design of metal-based catalysts capable of complete mineralization of BPA via electrochemical oxidation. Considering the shortage of metals resources and ever-increasing generation of electronic waste (e-waste), converting e-waste into high-performance catalysts is highly expected to offer an economical and feasible means to achieve the degradation of BPA. To this end, CuAu bimetallic catalysts are in situ electro-codeposited on the carbon cloth (CC) support with the waste central processing unit (CPU) leachate as electrolyte. Significantly, the recovered CuAu/CC composites can be directly applied as an efficient electrocatalyst for the decontamination of BPA via the electro-Fenton process. The electrocatalytic activities of the fabricated CuAu/CC electrodes can be regulated by tuning the reduction potentials during electro-deposition process. Under the optimized operational conditions, 99.5 % of BPA (50 mg/L) is removed within 120 min at a constant cathodic potential of −1.0 V (vs Ag/AgCl) in the CuAu/CC-mediated electro-Fenton system, accompanied by 64.2 % of total organic carbon (TOC) removal, highlighting a satisfactory performance of the BPA electrochemical oxidation. In addition, the proposed CuAu/CC electrode material can be facilely regenerated and reused for at least ten cycles without significant decline in BPA removal efficiency. Our work offers valuable guidance for upcycling of bimetallic alloy catalysts from e-waste and further application in electrochemical decontamination of organic pollutants, achieving the innovative target of “using waste to treat waste.”

Contamination characteristics and dietary intake risk of brominated flame retardants in fishes around a typical e-waste dismantling site in Southern China

Shanqi Zhou,Zhihua Qiao,Siyuan Ling,Mengru Fu,Yanna Han,Cheng Peng,Wei Zhang,Juying Lei

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their substitutes, novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment of electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling region, leading to their inevitable absorption and accumulation by aquatic organisms , which can be transferred to human via directly aquatic product consumption or through food chain, thereby posing potential health risks. This study focused on fish samples from Guiyu and its surrounding areas, and found the total PBDEs concentrations were 24–7400 ng/g lw (mean: 1800 ng/g lw) and the total NBFRs concentrations were 14 to 2300 ng/g lw (mean: 310 ng/g lw). Significant positive correlations were found among PBDE congeners, among different NBFRs, and between NBFRs and commercial PBDEs that they replace. ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs in the intestine were 620–350,000 and 91–81,000 ng/g lw (mean: 83000 and 12,000 ng/g lw, respectively), significantly exceeding those in the gills, where ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs were 14–37,000 and 39–45,000 ng/g lw (mean: 9200 and 2400 ng/g lw, respectively). The ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs showed no non-carcinogenic risks to the target population through dietary intake. Despite the significantly higher daily intake of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) compared to decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209), the non-carcinogenic risk associated with BDE209 remained higher than that of DBDPE. Our findings can assist researchers in understanding the presence of BFRs in aquatic organisms , inhabiting e-waste dismantling areas, and in evaluating the associated health risks posed to humans through dietary exposure.

Remediation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers contaminated soil in the e-waste disposal site by ball milling modified zero valent iron activated persulfate

Chengjie Xue,Long Zhou,Zhanqiang Fang

Hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in e-waste disposal sites are difficult to remove effectively. There is little reported about zero valent iron (ZVI) coupled with persulfate (PS) to achieve the removal of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) from soil. In this work, we have prepared the flake submicron zero valent iron by ball milling with boric acid (B-mZVI bm ) at a low cost. Sacrifice experiments results showed that 56.6% of BDE209 was removed in 72 h with PS/B-mZVI bm , which was 2.12 times than that of micron zero valent iron (mZVI). The morphology, crystal form, atomic valence, composition, and functional group of B-mZVI bm were determined by SEM, XRD, XPS, and FTIR, and the results indicated that the oxide layer on the surface of mZVI is replaced by borides . The results of EPR indicated that hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical played the dominant role in the degradation of BDE209. The degradation products of BDE209 were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), accordingly, the possible degradation pathway was further proposed. The research suggested that ball milling with mZVI and boric acid is a low-cost means of preparing highly active zero valent iron materials. And the mZVI bm has promising applications in improving the activation efficiency of PS and enhancing the removal of the contaminant.

Benzothiazoles and benzotriazoles in the dust and human urine samples from the e-waste recycling industry: occurrence, distribution, and occupational exposure assessment

Yuxian Liu,Yutan Cai,Dongmei Li,Huajun Meng,Yufeng Lai,Jingtai Xu,Yongyin Lan,Xuan Zeng,Bo Zhang,Zhipeng Cheng,Tao Zhang,Jingchuan Xue

Modern e-waste dismantling workshops showed substantially elevated BTH and BTR levels in indoor dust. • 2-OH-BTH predominated in dust, reaching 8100 ng/g in modern e-waste dismantling workshops. • 2-OH-BTH and 1-H-BTR dominated urinary profiles, with 1.8-fold higher concentrations in e-waste workers than rural residents. • BTH EDIs via dust ingestion were ∼ 24-fold higher in workers, yet dust contributed ≤2.33% of total exposure. • Significant intra- and inter-class correlations were observed for BTHs and BTRs in both dust and urine. Benzothiazoles (BTHs) and benzotriazoles (BTRs) are high production volume chemicals widely incorporated into electronic products, yet their environmental occurrence and potential occupational exposure during e-waste recycling remain poorly characterized. In this study, four BTHs and three BTRs were quantified in 113 dust samples collected from a modern e-waste recycling facility and 15 household dust samples, as well as in urine samples from 121 e-waste dismantling workers and 20 rural residents. The median Σ(BTHs+BTRs) in modern e-waste (e.g., cell phone) dismantling workshop dust (3000 ng/g) was approximately 9–10 times higher than that observed in traditional e-waste (e.g., refrigerator) dismantling workshop (350 ng/g), e-waste storage areas (260 ng/g) and suburb residential homes (300 ng/g). These findings indicate substantial accumulation of BTHs and BTRs in indoor dust associated with modern e-waste dismantling activities. 2-Hydroxybenzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) was the predominant congener in e-waste associated dust, accounting for more than 84–95% of Σ(BTHs+BTRs) across different microenvironments, compared with 73% in reference residential dust, suggesting relatively modest differences in congener profiles between recycling and residential environments. In urine, 2-OH-BTH and 1H-BTR were the predominant detected congeners, accounting for 83% and 67% of Σ(BTHs+BTRs) in workers and rural residents, respectively. Their median urinary concentrations in workers were 4.3 and 1.8 ng/mL, respectively, representing 1.8-fold higher levels than those in rural residents (2.4 and 1.0 ng/mL). Significant positive correlations were observed among BTHs, among BTRs, and between the two chemical classes in both dust and urine, suggesting shared or related exposure sources. The median estimated daily intake of BTHs through dust ingestion among workers was 2.60 ng/kg bw/day, approximately 24-fold higher than that estimated for rural residents (0.11 ng/kg bw/day), indicating elevated occupational exposure potential. Nevertheless, dust ingestion accounted for no more than 2.33% of the total BTH exposure estimated from urinary biomonitoring, suggesting that other exposure pathways may make greater contributions to overall internal exposure.

Hydrodechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated soil from an e-waste recycling area, using nanoscale zerovalent iron and Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles

Chen Xi,Yao Xiaoyan,Yu Chunna,Su Xiaomei,Shen Chaofeng,Chen Chen,Huang Ronglang,Xu Xinhua

Soil pollution by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) arising from the crude disposal and recycling of electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) is a serious issue, and effective remediation technologies are urgently needed. Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) and bimetallic systems have been shown to promote successfully the destruction of halogenated organic compounds. In the present study, nZVI and Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles synthesized by chemical deposition were used to remove 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl from deionized water, and then applied to PCBs contaminated soil collected from an e-waste recycling area. The results indicated that the hydrodechlorination of 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl by nZVI and Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and Pd loading was beneficial to the hydrodechlorination process. It was also found that the removal efficiencies of PCBs from soil achieved using Pd/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were higher than that achieved using nZVI and that PCBs degradation might be affected by the soil properties. Finally, the potential challenges of nZVI application to in situ remediation were explored.

Bacterial cellulose hybrid membrane grafted with high ratio of adipic dihydrazide for highly efficient and selective recovery of gold from e-waste

Xi Zhang,Huaimeng Li,Mengxiang Ye,Haimin Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Yunxia Zhang

To solve metal resource shortage and alleviate environmental issues, it is in urgent need to explore cost-effective and environment-friendly adsorbents for sustainable recovery of valuable gold from e-waste. Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) hybrid membrane grafted with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) has been fabricated via a facile schiff base reaction strategy for efficient and selective recovery of gold from complex aqueous media. The resulting [email protected] hybrid membrane features high ratio of hydrazide groups (67% of ADH by mass content) and hierarchical porous structure, ensuring high adsorption capacity (1149 mg/g) and fast adsorption equilibrium time (20 min) toward gold. Meanwhile, the remarkable recovery selectivity of gold is achieved in the simulated e-waste leachate containing a large amount of interfering metal ions. Notably, the captured Au(III) species on [email protected] hybrid membrane can be directly converted by redox-active hydrazide groups into Au(0) with no need of any external reductant. Furthermore, the developed [email protected] membrane possesses superior recycling and reusability performance, as reflected by no obvious decrease in gold extraction capability after six cycles. More importantly, the [email protected] hybrid membrane is capable of extracting almost 100% of gold from actual waste central processing unit (CPU) leachate, yielding high-purity gold (23.7 K) after pyrolysis.

Highly selective recovery of gold and silver from E-waste via stepwise electrodeposition directly from the pregnant leaching solution enabled by the MoS2 cathode

Deshou Wang,Yumeng Liang,Yong Zeng,Chang Liu,Chun Zhan,Peng Chen,Shaoxian Song,Feifei Jia

The recycling of electronic waste, i.e ., waste Printed Circuit Boards (WPCBs), provides substantial environmental and economic advantages. In fact, the concentration of valuable precious and base metals in WPCBs is even higher compared to those found in mined ores. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to selectively extract precious metals with low concentrations from the pregnant leaching solution, due to the co-deposition of base metals, like Cu, which have higher concentrations. In this research, stepwise recovery of precious metals and copper directly from WPCBs thiosulfate leaching solution was facilitated by the Ti cathode coated with MoS 2 (MoS 2 /Ti). The in-situ enrichment of Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3- and Ag(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3- at the surface of MoS 2 enables the high efficiency and selectivity of electrodeposition , which has been confirmed through COMSOL Multiphysics simulations and visualization. As a result, the first-step electrodeposition at 0.6 V recovered 92.44 % Au and 98.18 % Ag without any co-deposition of Cu. Subsequently, the second-step recovery employed a constant current of 0.03 A, achieving 100 % recovery of copper within 12 h. Furthermore, this study optimized the reduction potential, NH 3 ·H 2 O concentration, and S 2 O 3 2- concentration for the stepwise electrodeposition process. These findings provide valuable insights for establishing a closed loop circular economy in the electronics industry.
